IPad 1 isn't recognise as an external hard-drive.

I have a bunch of folders on my iPad 1 that I want to add to my computer and back up. When I go to my 'Computer' file it isn't recognising my iPad as an extra/external hard-drive. The problem I'm having is that it IS being recognised in my iTunes and the camera software always reads.
- I have tried different computers and USB ports
- I have tried different USB cables
- I have tried restarting both my computer and iPad
- I have tried configuring
- Apple Mobile Device Support is installed correctly
- I've have no third party conflicts
Yet still nothing.
The operating system I'm using is iOS 5.1.1 as it will not let me update to the new versions anymore.
Please help any ideas welcome esp if they don't include buying a new devise.

You cannot mount the iPad like an external drive. It's not meant to work that way - at least out of the box anyway. There are some third party apps that let you do what you want to do.
This is app will do that and it works in iOS 5.
File Manager - Folder Plus on the App Store on iTunes
However, depending on what is in these folders, you can use apps like DropBox, Or use iCloud, you can email files and you can use iOS file sharing to move files back and forth from iPad to computer

  • Syncing iPad to iPod from iTunes on external hard drive

I had all my music stored on my laptop but was running out of space so I transferred it all to an external hard drive. That's when everything went pear shaped! Tried to sync it all but messed it up. Now I have all songs on iPad, but it won't sync new stuff to iPod plus there is only new songs ( recently purchased ) on iTunes. Would love to know how to sync up iPad to iPod and iTunes so it all matches. Have tried the iTunes info icon but still can't get it to sync. Has anybody had problems with external hard drives when it comes to syncing iTunes?
    Thanks in advance
    Penny

If your library is full of broken links then try fixing them with my FindTracks script, otherwise see this post by forum regular Zevoneer for options on transferring files from the iPad to your computer.
Alternatively, if your iTunes database is missing files that should be in it then perhaps there is a previous iTunes library file kicking around your internal drive somewhere that could be restored and reconnected to your media.  It all depends on exactly what you did to start with. Switching to a new database tends to get things confused as iTunes will want to wipe the device and start over.

  • IMac doesn't recognise any USB external hard drives

    2011 iMac running on OS X 10.7.5
    1. I have tried 3 different hard drives now and none of them work on iMac but all work on Macbook Pro
    2. Not appearing anywhere - evenin in Disc Utility
    3. Tried to remove all other USB's in use and still no joy
    4. Tried to turn computer off and remove power for 10 mins and still no joy.
    5. The one I want it to work for is Seagate Backup Plus but like the others just doesn't see it.
Can anyone give any further advice?

Thanks BDAqua I tried your solution as I mentioned in point 4 or my initial discussion but this did not work.
I only have a USB do you think I should buy a firewire cable and try that?
My USB works for everything I've tried apart from portable hard discs.
The firewire bug link you sent is obviously for firewire issues so I assume I don't need to read this until I have tried a firewire cable?
What do you mean by this statement "If so, I suspect the AC PSU if it has one."?
I'm not technical so couldn't understand the acronyms or how this statment tied in with the previous instructions.
Thanks again for taking the time to help me

  • How do I back up ipad to external hard drive?

I want to back up my IPad (without the cloud) to an external hard drive that also will back up my IMac using Time Machine. How can I do this? Thanks!!

There are some wireless external hard drives that can be used with the iPad.
The Kingston Wi-Drive, which costs $50 for the 16 Gigabyte, and then $30 more for every 16 gigs more. It works by you turning it on and then accessing the files on it from an app that you download on your iDevice. You can access music, movies, and other stuff. No connections or anything, it works like a WiFi connection, you connect to it from the setting on the iPad under wireless networks.
Then there is the Seagate GoFlex, which some would recommend over the Wi-Drive. But this one costs $199 and had 500 Gigabytes of storage. It works the sameway as the Kingston: no wires, runs over its wireless connection. You can actually fit up to 300 HD movies on it.

  • How do I stream data from external hard drive to ipad?

My wife and I both have computers. Heres what i would like to do:
    A. sell my computer and buy an ipad
    B. Hook up a wireless external hard drive that can connect to the internet (do these exist?)and just leave it at home with it connected to the internet 24/7
    C. from my ipad access all of my files on the external drive from anywhere i have internet. (music, doc, videos, pics)
    My questions are these:
    1. is this possible?
    2. do they make external hard drives like that under $200 but preferably $100. I only need about 200gb of storage?
    3. is there an easier cheaper option that i dont know about?
I'm familiar with devices that send data wirelessly but you have to have it with you.  The point here is to leave the data it at home, only taking the ipad.

thanks for the quick responces philly fan you were especially hepful.
    Huh, sence of humor, nice.
I found this little guy http://wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=280 looks like exactly what i want. BUT i dont think i can edit docs and put them back on the server.  Anybody know of anything that can?

  • Itunes library on an external hard drive for the Ipad?

Does anyone know of a way that I can access an iTunes library through an external hard drive on the ipad?  Currently, I have an external hard drive connected through an airport base station.  From my ipad, I can connect to this hard drive and see all my media files (using the FileBrowser app); however I cannot create playlists or let the music play on a loop.  Is there a way I can import this library of music into itunes and still have it reference the external hard drive location?
I have this setup on my computer to keep the hard drive clean and am trying to do the same with the hard drive.
    Any suggestions?

I have my iTunes library on my hard drive, but keep a number of mp3's on an external hard drive..but here are some things I looked at to get an idea how to best manage this:

  • Moving photos from iPad 3 to external hard drive

I've sync'd photos from albums on my Macbook and photos from my camera to my iPad 3 64gb. I have also created albums on the iPad from the photos moved from the camera so all photos are now in albums. To free up space on the Macbook and on the camera I would like to delete the photos from these 2 sources. To be on the safe side I would like to transfer the albums, which hold about 1600 photos, from the iPad to an external portable source. Is this possble and what external hard drive is recommended. Would the Kingston Wi Drive 16GB USB 2.0 Portable do the job or would I need something with greater capacity? It's not cheap.
    Thanks for your help.

  • How can i use an external hard drive with my ipad

I just got a new ipad 2 I am trying to see it is possible to connect a external hard drive to take  my picture and documents with me.

Basically you can't, though there are a few (fairly expensive) drives coming onto the market which are said to be compatible. There is no USB port on the iPad, and the optional camera connection kit is only for the transfer of photos/videos, so wouldn't recognise other file types - if you were able to connect a drive via it then the drive would need it's own power source, the photos would have to be in a specific format, and there is still no guarantee that it would work.
There are apps available for the iPad which can use/access cloud services such as Dropbox.

  • HT1766 How can I change the location of my iPad backup to an external hard drive (I'm using Windows XP)?

    Hi Everyone,
My computer's hard drive isn't very big and it's getting quite full backing up my iPhone and iPad. I would like to transfer the back ups to an external hard drive but I haven't figured out how to do this. Also, I would also like to move the Apps folder to the external hard drive.
Although I hope to eventually purchase an Apple computer, for now I still have a PC running Windows XP. Does anyone know how to transfer these files to an external hard drive using Windows XP?
My iPad is the newest with retina display, 128 GB Wi-fi.
    Many thanks!

    Relocate iOS device backups
Assuming you're running Windows Vista or later you can use the following steps:
Open a command prompt by hitting the start button and typing CMD<Enter> in the search box that opens up.
To move the current backup folder from C: to D: type in this command and press <Enter>
    Move "C:\Users\<User>\AppData\Local\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup" "D:\Backup"
Where <User> is your Windows user name.
To make iTunes look for the data in the new location type in this command and press <Enter>
    MkLink /J "C:\Users\<User>\AppData\Local\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup" "D:\Backup"
If your external drive has a different letter or you already have a folder called "Backup" then edit "D:\Backup" accordingly in both commands.
If you're still running Windows XP you can use Junction (cmd line tool) or NTFSLink (shell ext). In both cases you move the existing folder to a new location, create an empty folder where the old one used to be, then use the tools to get the operating system to link the two together and silently redirect any file operation on the old location through to the new one.
Note that while this method works for iOS device backups it cannot be used to redirect sections of the media library.

  • Problem storing music on external hard drive and iTunes recognising the music.

Hi hope someone is able to help.
I've set up iTunes on my parents windows Laptop to store all the music on an external hardrive. In preferences and in advanced I altered where the music was located. But unfortunately when they removed the external and went to use it a few days later, iTunes did not recognise where the music was stored.
There is no music in the iTunes folder on the laptop only on the external.
I deleted all the music that could not be located...all had exclamation mark.
Added folder to library, which was from the external hardrive.
Music re added and they were able to put music on their ipod. However the same has happened again when they removed and reinserted their external. Should I just cut my losses and reput all the music back on the Laptop (makes it very slow, quite alot of it) or am I missing checking or deselecting something in itunes, with it being on an external hard drive.
Hope to hear back from someone to help.

If you've split the media folder out to an external drive and then start iTunes while the drive is disconnected iTunes gets out of sorts. It will reset the media folder to the default internal path. Depending on what other devices have been connected the external drive letter may also change from time to time which also confuses iTunes. What works best is to create your iTunes library at the root of the external drive, with the media folder inside. In this confuration if the drive isn't connected or has changed letter, iTunes will stop with an error. You can either cancel, connec the drive, and restart, or in the case of a changed drive letter, simply browse to X:\iTunes\iTunes Library.itl to open it, where X:: is the current letter for the external drive.
See make a split library portable for details of how to rearrange your library if you've got it working. Alternatively press and hold down shift as you start iTunes, keep holding until asked to choose or create a library, then click create and make the library at X:\iTunes. Move all the media inside X:\iTunes\iTunes Media, then use File Add Folder to Library to import it.
