IPad 2/airport express/traveling

received airport express but still waiting for ipad 2 delivery. Need to set up airport so that I can hook it up to ethernet cable in hawaii. Do i have to wait for the ipad to set it up or can i use my macbook pro? Also, Since i already have a wireless setup at home, do I need to set airport express up a NEW wireless. I hope this doesn't screw up the wireless i have working already. My current wireless is set up through TimeMachine.
Can anyone help guide me through this?

You cannot set it up using the iPad.
You need to connect it to computer and use the AirPort utility to set up the AirPort Express.

Your 4th gen iPad does have the necessary software to connect to the AirPort Express but not to administer it. To do the later, you would need to install the AirPort Utility applet.
You said that your iPad can "see" the AirPort's wireless network, but can't connect. What happens exactly when you attempt to do so? Do any of your other wireless devices have any trouble connecting to the Express? Did you configure the Express for a closed network ... that is, not to broadcast its Network Name?

why cant i print from my ipad using airport express but i can print from my mac using the express

Because your printer has to be Airprint compatible and connected to WiFi. There are applications, such as Printopia, that will allow you to print through your computer.

Exactly my point: it's not a problem of not having the right printer, it's a matter of iOS not allowing it because Air Print is blocking it, probably because of a deal with HP.
But, I've solved the problem so now I can print from my iMac, my Mac Air, my iPhone and my iPad. No thanks to the folks at Apple who purposely blocked that functionality.
Can you print from your iPad directly to the printer without involving an intervening computer, yes or no.

  • Why can't I print from my iPad using airport express

Why can't I print from my iPad using airport express?

Is the printer connected to the USB port on the AirPort Express?
If yes, Apple does not support printing from the iPad in this manner. Try another App like Printopia which should allow the iPad to print. There is a free trial, so you will know in a few minutes whether this will work.
Printopia - AirPrint to Any Printer - Print from iPad - Print from iPhone ...
Is the printer connected to the AirPort Express using wireless only?
If yes, you must have an AirPrint compatible printer to be able to print directly from the iPad. See if your model is AirPrint compatible in this Apple document:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4356
If your printer model appears, the printer may need a firmware update to enable the AirPrint feature. Contact the support folks at your printer manufacturer.
If the printer does not appear, try Printopia as above.

If yes what can be done.
    Thank you.
    Merry Christmas

You might be able to get the iPad to print to the HP by installing an App like Print Central on the iPad.
There are no guarantees that this will work, so worst case you will be out about $10 U.S.

  • Airport express travel

I have bought an airport express, mainly for hard wired hotels to use with Iphone/Ipad as I don't use a laptop. I have set it up on my PC using the standard settings and works fine at home.
Once I try it on another router with ethernet cable connected, I can't connect to it using my Iphone/Ipad.
Does anyone have any sugestions to what I am missing in the set up.
    Thanks.

At one time, Bridge Mode was considered the standard "travel" mode because this would allow the Express to connect to the hotel router and provide wireless for your devices.
Over the past several years, hotels have become much smarter about things like this and many of them have now started to charge for each device that connects. So, if  you have an iPad and and iPhone, some hotels are charging for two connections if they can because the hotel router was assigning IP addresses to each of the devices.
So, the thinking has evolved a bit to setting the Express up to "Share a public IP address". In this setting, the hotel router only "sees" one device....the Express....while the Express handles multiple devices on the wireless. This way, you can connect multiple devices and only pay for one connection at the hotel.
It will take a bit more configuration if you want to use the "Share" setting on your home router and it will introduce what is known as a Double NAT error on the network, which is normally not a serious issue. The Express will create a "separate" wireless network in this type of setting', so you will have to log on to it separately if you want to use the wireless on the Express with the home router.
All of this may really not be that useful if you plan to travel in the U.S. on most trips. It's becoming more and more difficult to find hotels with Ethernet connections as many have already transferred over to wireless....so they can charge for each device that connects.....and the others will likely follow as well in the near future.

  • I am unable to use apps on my iPhone 3GS, apple TVs & iPad mini - Airport Express

I currently have an airport express and Netgear ADSL2+ modem.  I also have an iPhone 3GS, 2 apple TVs, iPad mini, and iMac (circa 2008). The only device that is working properly is the 2008 iMac. All other devices show that I have 5 bar signal but do not allow me to use any of the apps (ie: Netflix, Facebook, Instagram, etc.) I have ran speedtest on all devices, ping and download speed are as expected. Ping: 150 ms, Download: 2.7 mbps, Upload 0.68 mbps from iMac. The only difference is that upload speed on iPhone and iPad mini does not register. I feel like the issue is with the modem or the airport? Do I need the airport extreme even though I show 5 bar signal strength on all devices or do I need a new modem from Verizon in hopes that it will get me a better connection on a device that they support? (they do not support the Netgear modem I currrently have).

  • I cannot print from my iPad using airport express. My printer is not AirPrint compatible but is connected to airport express thru USB port. My laptop can print with no problem thru the express unit. My lap top is no a mac.

Good day, my iPad does not seem to pick up my printer. My printer is not AirPrint compatible but is connected to my airport express thru the USB port. My laptop which is windows type connects to the printer via airport express thru bonjour and this work well. My iPad does not pick up my printer thru the airport express. I have read about different software that you can download but this seems to be only if you are using a mac. I know my express is working fine as I can use airplay thru my iPad. Any ideas? I do not want to go to the expense of changing my printer, when there was no mention in the express details that your printer had to be AirPrint compatible or indeed wireless.

See this article to learn how to print from an iPad to your USB printer when you have a PC.  The PC will need to be running when you want to print from the iPad.

  • Charging iPad with Airport Express extension power cable?

I have the discontinued Monster Airport Express Stereo Connection Kit, it comes with 3 cables, one of which is an Airport Express extension power cable, I want to know if I can use this power cable to charge my new iPad. I have asked Apple staff who didn't know as they no longer stock the cables. The power cord has a UK wall plug on one end and a 2 pin connector on the other, made to slot into the airport express unit it the same fashion as the iPad power cable slots into the iPad power block. I understand the iPad needs 10w power charging. Does anybody know if this will be safe to use? Many thanks...

Use the power adapter/cable that came with the iPad.
The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.
At this link http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/galaxy-tab-android-tablet,3014-11.html , tests show that the iPad 2 battery (25 watt-hours) will charge to 90% in 3 hours 1 minute. It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. If you are using your iPad while charging, it will take even longer. It's best to turn your new iPad OFF and charge over night. • I have an Ipad 3 - 32 gb, and I also have a player piano- Wurlitzer Essex which plays wirelessly from my Ipad thru Airport Express.  After doing an update to Ipad last yr, I have had a lot of difficulty in playing songs from the Ipad to my piano. Any idea

I updated my Ipad 3  32 gb  about a yr ago.  Now I can't play songs from Airport Express to my player piano- Wurlitzer Essex.  Any suggestions?  I'm Leary about doing a new update because of what fear it did to my Ipad last time.

    Greetings,
I've never seen this issue, and I handle many iPads, of all versions. WiFi issues are generally local to the WiFi router - they are not all of the same quality, range, immunity to interference, etc. You have distance, building construction, and the biggie - interference.
At home, I use Apple routers, and have no issues with any of my WiFi enabled devices, computers, mobile devices, etc - even the lowly PeeCees. I have locations where I have Juniper Networks, as well as Aruba, and a few Netgears - all of them work as they should.
The cheaper routers, Linksys, D-Link, Seimens home units, and many other no name devices have caused issues of various kinds, and even connectivity.
I have no idea what Starbucks uses, but I always have a good connection, and I go there nearly every morning and get some work done, as well as play.
You could try changing channels, 2.4 to 5 Gigs, changing locations of the router. I have had to do all of these at one time or another over the many years that I have been a Network Engineer.
    Good Luck - Cheers,
    M.
