Ipad 2 built quality / lightbleeding / gps question

hi guys,
i'm thinking of getting an ipad 2 64gb 3g - but i'm quite shocked reading - literally everywhere - about the bad built quality and lightbleeding. i know that forums rather resemble the bad news then the good ones, but the amount of complaints makes me think twice buying one.
but if i'd order one now, which production week would i probably get and how are the newer builds considering overall and screen quality? what is the word on the streets?
my other question concerns the gps function. i will not need a 3g internet connection but i'd like to use a navigation app. will i be able to use apps like tomtom or navigon without a 3g internet connection? what will be the forfeit?
thanks in advance,
joerg

In addition to the previous reply and just t be clear, if you want to use GPS on the move then you will need the 3G version even if you don't activate the service - the wifi only model doesn't have a gps chip in it.
And, if the equipment in your byline is correct, you'll need to update to at least 10.5.8

I am very happy to report that my server connection tech, which I called via landline, informed me to : 1. Open Tools 2. Scan down to Clear Recent History 3. Delete All. That was it! Unbelievable! Six hours of searching through the Windows catagories. I checked the results on an internet site, and viola! It was gone! Mozilla Firefox seems to remember the usernames and passwords irregardless of the option window that asks if you if want it to remember the user and password. I finally got in touch with my friend and he said he did not answer yes to the window, even though he was aware of it. No damage. I surely do appreciate everyones' concern in this, now what seems to be, a very simple solution. Cudos to Firefox! Thank-you! P.S. I now have to enter my information at the beginning of any password protected sites...no harm done! My friend is now condemned to the 'user account' site! lol...

Are iPads built with different configurations for different countries?

I live in the U.S. but am moving to Brazil. I would like to purchase an iPad here in the U.S. but want to have it set up for Brazil, ie: language, operation, WiFi. Can all of this be done by selecting the country specific configuration at the setup stage?
You can certainly chose the language when you set it up. WiFi is an international standard, no difference between US and Brazil. You can further go into Settings - General - International and select language, as well as keyboards and region format.
Also, Is it possible to order the iPad (to be shipped to me in the U.S.) with packaging material (ie: operation manual, etc.) in the Brazilian Portuguese language?
There is no operation manual included - English, Portuguese, or any other language. You can find the one you need at http://support.apple.com/pt_BR/manuals/.
    Additionally, does Brazil have 4G?
I'm not sure, but as of now the only countries where the iPad 4G will work are the US and Canada - other countries that have 4G use different frequencies.

If you lost sounds for keyboard clicks, games or other apps, email notifications and other notifications, system sounds may have been muted.
System sounds can be muted and controlled two different ways. The screen lock rotation can be controlled in the same manner as well.
Settings>General>Use Side Switch to: Mute System sounds. If this option is selected, the switch on the side of the iPad above the volume rocker will mute system sounds.
If you choose Lock Screen Rotation, then the switch locks the screen. If the screen is locked, you will see a lock icon in the upper right corner next to the battery indicator gauge.
If you have the side switch set to lock screen rotation then the system sound control is in the control center if you are running iOS 7. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to get to control center . Tap on the bell icon and system sounds will return.
If you are running iOS 5 or iOS 6, the system sound control is in the task bar at the bottom. Double tap the home button and swipe all the way to the right in the task bar to get to the speaker icon on the left side. Tap on that and the sounds will return.
If you have the side switch set to mute system sounds, then the screen lock can be accessed in the same manner as described above.
This support article from Apple explains how the side switch works.

  • Transcription definition for ipad built-in dictionary in iBooks

Could you please give me information where i can find Pronunciation Symbols (transcription definition) for ipad built-in dictionary in iBooks?

Take a look at the ios4 upgrade for the iPad coming in November, keyboard and dictionary.
    http://www.apple.com/ipad/software-update/
I don't know if this means a separate dictionary for the iPad. If so, I dough third party apps will have access to the dictionary. Third party app developers would probably need to build a dictionary function into their app. Who knows...? We won't untill ios4 comes out.
You can give Apple feedback for the ipad about you idea:

  • Nokia 500 GPS questions/troubles with: Contacts, F...

So... I have owned my 500 now since Christmas (I received the 500 as a gift from my father-in-law). Overall, for my first GPS device, I really enjoy all the features... But, I'm having quite a few troubles and hoped that some expert users or Nokia Support folks might be able to help.
    1) It took me forever, but I found a program to sync my Treo 700wx from Verizon to the Nokia 500. When I first tried syncing my phone it was recognized just fine but then only downloaded my 5 favorite (or quick dial) contacts from the Windows Mobile homepage. Then I did some looking on the internet and found a program from a company called JETware Mobile Software at www.jetwaremobile.com. The first time I used this software (the trial version only) I suceeded in syncing 623 contacts to the Nokia 500. Here are the issues though... The addresses did not sync (what a huge inconvenience considering this was 90% of the reason I wanted to sync the contacts). The phone numbers for each contact (if there were multiple phone numbers for the same person) sync as seperate contacts on the Nokia 500 (not a huge deal).
Question# 1) Isn't there a way to use some sort of a program on the PC to syncronize contacts from let's say Outlook or VCF files or a CSV file to the Nokia 500 manually?
    2) I copied all the data from the supplied 2gb SD card and loaded it onto a new AData 16gb SD card & re-inserted the card to make sure everything worked ok on the device - No problem. I uploaded 8 gb of MP3 & 4 gb of Movies (in MP4 format - great program to use is www.pqdvd.com - buy the iPod version or PSP version so you can use it for both) and 1 gb of pictures.
    Here are my comments:
MP3's - The player is a bit cheezy, but I was finally able to figure out how to play at random all the MP3s or play individual folders of songs at a time. Too bad you can't create or import a playlist!
FM Transmitter - Totally worthless in Sacramento, CA where there isn't a whole lot of open FM channels on the radio dial. Unfortunately my Jetta doesn't have an audio input plug otherwise this might work a lot better!
Note: the only place I can find to turn the FM transmitter on is in the MP3 playing mode (very strange & annoying)
Movies - I read a lot here to find out why the playback was so choppy & pretty low quality... Bottom line - You have to record the MP4s at about 15fps and create a MP4 file for about a one & a half hour movie that is about 600mb or so. This seemed to work pretty good.
Question #2) Is there a recommendation from Nokia experts on how to help the FM transmitter function worth a darn?
    3) I've searched for many addresses on the GPS and echo other's complaints about very strange missing information & strange city lines in Nokia's software. It's very odd to me that I have to go thru about 10 clicks to "Take me home" and that everytime the device navigates me home it takes me a very off-the-beaten-path way home.
Question #3) Is there a way to save the route you actually drove between two destinations and store that as a trip on the Nokia 500 - vs. storing just the end destination & the Nokia solution to get from point A to B.
    4) Battery life - If I had to guess the average battery life I've seen using this device is about 1 hour from power up to "I really need charging". Is this normal for GPS devices? I'm guessing it must be and most people just keep these plugged in at all times to their cigarette adapters.
    5) Traffic - From my testing in Sacramento, CA there is no traffic service or alerts.
Question #4) Is there a service I need to purchase & how would one go about turning on traffic services for the Nokia 500?
    6) User-interface - I'm brand new to this whole GPS world but as you can tell from this review I'm pretty tech-savvy... I'm a bit surprised at home much savvy it really takes to operate this device and I would think the average not-so-savvy user would be very put off by this.
Overall if I were to rate this device out of 10 I'd have to say it's a strong 6/10 and possibly a 7/10.
I really appreciate any expert feedback on my above 4 questions & 6 topics if at all possible.
    Thank you!
    ~Jeff

Jeff, here's my input on your points and questions. Thanks for writing your post...
Question 1) It only supports syncing over bluetooth with phones that meet its bluetooth specs (see the user manual on the DVD for more details or the product website)
    Point 2)
While you can't create or import a playlist on the Nokia, you can use your media player on your computer (e.g. Windows Media Player), while the SD card is inserted in your card reader on your computer, to create a playlist. Then copy the playlist file over the existing playlist file found in the root of your SD card.
Question 2) Not sure how to answer this one. The transmitter is built into the Nokia. So you just need to program it to use an available frequency (understanding that it is hard to find in your area). It doesn't unfortunately have the ability to scan for available frequencies (that would be cool).
Point 3) After you've selected to take you home, press the menu button and the Alt Route button where you can (according to the manual) configure the Nokia to block a route from being used.
Question 3) You would have to create a trip that includes enough waypoints (which you can create by creating bookmarks as you drive along) and then use that. Not to be sarcastic, but I find it funny how obsessed we all get about a GPS choosing the best route when if you already know of a better route then why do you even need the GPS' guidance? I'm guilty of this too so I'm also laughing at myself.
Point 4) I'm guessing that if your using the bluetooth integration, the FM transmitter, the TMC receiver, streaming video, using navigation, and keeping the brightness at the max setting, the estimated 2hr battery life isn't going to happen. The manual actually recommends using the cigarette lighter because it is your TMC receiver.
Point 5) My city (Vancouver, Canada) does offer TMC and my Nokia says its tuned in (I know because I've also seen the message where it says it is Tuning) yet I've not seen one traffic advisory yet. My Nokia's manual included an addendum from Nokia saying that TMC service is not available in the US and Canada. We all know this isn't true but maybe this is Nokia's way of saying their version of a TMC receiver doesn't work in North America.
Question 4) Good question. I think the answer is no because this TMC receiver is meant to work with a free TMC service. I'm thinking that maybe the only TMC services in US and Canada are pay-services that require you to enter a subscription unlock code in your GPS - the Nokia doesn't appear to provide such a function. *** This is my theory, I haven't confirmed this with any TMC provider ***
Point 6) I agree the user interface is not meant for non-tech-literates. It took me awhile to figure it out. Especially the meaning of icons and when to use them. This is NOT the Tivo of GPS
Overall I'm satisfied with my GPS even though I suspect there will never be map, POI, or software updates. I plan to figure out a way to mount it to my motorbike and ride all the way down to Mexico City (if I can figure out how to unlock the license for the Mexico map!)

  • Enhanced book for iPad, built on iBooks Author

    Hi all
I am sorry if these are similar questions to ones asked before, but I wondered if things might be different since they were last asked.
I have delivered an enhanced book built for iPad and it is currently in the review status, not in 51 stores. My questions (of which I have heard many myths about):
    1) As it's an enhanced book (created on iBooks Author), there are lots of videos, galleries etc which make the publication about 1 gig. I have heard that although there is a 2 gig limit, some authors have had responses from Apple saying that it should be kept to max 200mb and therefore rejected. True or false do you reckon?
    2) Mine is a travel guide about a specific area of Spain and it is all about solutions to the traveller. Therefore as well as lots of text, there is a Useful Links section that links to companies websites  such as car hire  - their logos are next to the URL's in my book. Do you think Apple will be ok with their logos visible and external web links? It is simple to remove it if necessary but in truth it is a resource for my readers.
    3) I have heard varying reports of 3 hours to 55 days for the review process to be complete. Does anybody know if it is longer for an enhanced book due to the complexitied of its build?
    4) I have heard reports that if it fails, Apple will tell you how to rectify it. Is this true and is it easy to resubmit?
    5) I have also heard reports of Apple simply rejecting without explanation. That would be so painful. I have spent 6 months and a lot of investment. I would be devestated. is this true?
    6) Any other advice? It has been in review for 3 days only so far. Any ideas on current wait time for enhanced books built for ipad, created on iBooks Author?
It's an anxious time isn't it?!
    Thanks.

    1. Max size is 3 GB, but   take  into acount you want  updates at some stage and need to allow "space"
    2. URLs  are usually excepted IF they are not competitors of Apple iBooks Store - ie Amazon. Any logo is usually copyrighted by the  company.  Any potential copyright infringements  could be rejected by th review team.
    3. Time taken in Review depends how busy they are  without regard to your  content.
    4.  If your book fails the review,  you will be issued a ticket - A recent email advised changed to the ticketing procedures.
    Ticket Catalog Report
The Catalog Reports module on iTunes Connect now contains a Ticket Catalog Report. The report contains details for all tickets that have been assigned to your iTunes Connect account.
    iBooks Store Formatting Guidelines Update
The iBooks Store Formatting Guidelines include important information to help you avoid common errors when publishing on the iBooks Store. The new version of the guidelines includes updated information for copyrighted terms, supported languages, series metadata, What's New descriptions, book assets files, and more.
Download the updated iBooks Store Formatting Guidelines from the Deliver Your Content module on iTunes Connect.
    5.  The review team will pass or fail your book,  fail is dealt with above. Pass... means its in the store. All you need to  do is keep checking status in iTC.
    6. is the same asnwer as 3.    You wait and Check in iTC to monitor if your book  is passed or ticketed.
Other advice,  open iTC  >  Deliver your Content >  on the top right are a number of PDF, download and  read  study them. Below them is a video.. take time to  view the video and take notes.
The above extracts are from an email  from iBooks, the links should still work, if not  they are basically to open your iTunes Connect - Deliver your content section.
Last  bit of advice, check everything  at least twice before uploading to the store. Remember issues with copyright. Dont use anything just  because its online. Dont copy text or images from other  websites and give credits/links to any that are subject to Common Licence conditions... and finally.. be patient, time , tide and Apple move at their own speed.

  • When iMovie '11 renders SD for iPad the quality goes way down. Is there a way to do this that does not compress as much?

It appears that DV/DVCAM SD files are about 300 MB per minute. When iMovie '11 compresses a rendered movie for iPad the size is less than 30 MB per minute. It greys out the otherwise available HD options in favor of "large", but this level of compression seems to really decrease the quality, creating unacceptable levels of quantization error noise and color banding. Is there a way to render a finished edited movie created in iMovie '11 or iMovie 5 that will not do this? I could compress in HandBrake but there is apparently no way to send the editing metadata to it from iMovie. Any suggestions?

I can't answer your first question.
The default location for the imovie Theater.theater  package is in your user / Movies folder.

  • IPad mini (wifi) no gps?

If the iPad mini doesn't have GPS, how can I 'FIND' it if it's lost of stolen?
    And how will 'MAPS' work?
It was announced it would run 'ALL' iPad apps.

Thanks Kappy with your assistance I think I now understand it. I am actually going to buy and install HEMA maps. This is the info from their site.
    Important Information
Even though the cellular model iPads are the only ones which have built-in GPS circuitry, you do NOT need to have a mobile data plan and / or SIM installed in the iPad to use the iPad app. When you install the app, the maps are installed along with it, so there is no need to "stream" the maps off the internet while the app is in use.
The app does NOT require an active internet connection while in use.
So I guess that means that as the maps are stored on the iPad all it has to do, when not in cellular range, is use the GPS function via satellites.

  • Travelling iPad workflow - quality and backup.

I was wondering if anyone could help clarify a couple of points I have about using Lightroom in my workflow whilst travelling.
I'm traveling and will be away from my main desktop for around 8-9 months I have a canon 700d, camera connection kit and an iPad mini. I'd like to upload my photos from my memory card to my iPad and then drop them in to Adobe Lightroom to do a first round of editing to lessen the mountain of work I'll have when I eventually get home.
My concerns are over quality, i'm not shooting in RAW but the highest .jpg quality my camera will allow. Will I loose anything as the image goes from Camera to iPad Photos to Lightroom to Adobe Cloud Storage?
My other question is after having uploaded and synced all my changes with the Creative Cloud can I then delete the images locally off my iPad? Or will they then be removed from Creative Cloud too? This would not only help with saving space on the iPad but I could also wipe my SD cards as I go.
Thanks to to anyone who can help!

I've not used it personally but I would check first that the originals from camera roll are correctly sync'd before deleting it.
Here is a similar thread relating to iPhone which seems to indicate it's possible but I would suggest you carry out a small test yourself before traveling.
