IPad 2 First sync

Since I am new to this forum if this has been answered already my apologies. I just got the notice that my iPad 2 has left on its journey here (from HK) and I would like to know the best way to do the first sync. For right now I want my iPhone 4 (IOS 4.3.1)and my iPad 2 to both have the same content. That includes my gmail account, contacts, and calendar. Later on I am leaning to a manual sync on the iPad so I can keep the apps iPad friendly.

Also, unless you use a encrypted backup, keychain items like passwords ill also not be restored to your iPad.
The keychain items can only be restored to the original iPad and not to a new device - at least according to Apple's support website.
From Apple's support site about the items that are backed up...
*Keychain (This includes email account passwords, Wi-Fi passwords, and passwords you enter into websites and some other applications. +The keychain can only be restored from backup to the same iPad+. If you are restoring to a new device, you will need to fill in these passwords again.)*

  • How can I start using IPad without first syncing with my computer?

I'm out of town and just bought a new IPad2.  I don't have my computer with me and won't be able to use it for another 2 weeks.  How can I start using my IPad before syncing with my computer?

You must activate it by syncing it to iTunes on a computer. An Apple Store can do it for you - or anybody with a computer that meets the minimum requirements and has iTunes 10.2 on it can activate it for you.
If you have someone else activate it, bear in mind that when you do finally sync to your computer, iTunes is going to tell you that all content will be erased because you already set it up on another computer with another iTunes library. Your iPad will sync to one iTunes library only. That is way they are designed to perform.
You CAN transfer any purchases that you make on the iPad to your iTunes library when you perform your first sync with your own computer, however, and I would strongly suggest that you do that when you get the chance.
If you do set it up with another computer, I would keep the purchases and downloads to a minimum so that keeping all of your data is not a big problem when you finally sync to your own PC.

  • Changing 'host' machine with which iPad was first sync'd

Because my OS was too old to work with newly purchased iPad, had to use someone else's Mac, here in office, to set up the iPad. Now I have a newer MacBook at home, and would like to use that with the iPad, for upload of pdf files etc. Can I change this?
    Thanks

Yes make sure you use the same account in iTunes.
Note you won't be able to download any music / videos again, but you can re-download Apps you have purchased for free.

  • I have photos on my iPad (the first apple device in our household) and then added an iMac and a macbook air. How do I get all of my photos on all devices. Myoriginal iPad has images not on my 2 newer devices and my 2 new devices do not share the same phot

I have photos on my iPad (the first apple device in our household) and then added an iMac and a Macbook air to our network. We have an airport 2TB back up device.  How do I get all of my photos on all devices. My original iPad has images that my 2 newer devices do not have on iphoto.

My original iPad has images that my 2 newer devices do not have on iphoto.
How are the images stored on your original iPad? Are they in the camera roll, in events downloaded using the camera connection kit, or are they in albums synced to your ipad from a computer?
If the photos are in the camera roll or in events downloaded from a camera, you can transfer them to your iMac and MBA by directly connecting the iPad using USB. Then you can download the photos to iPhoto like from a camera.
Only, if your photos have been synced to the iPad from a computer, you will have to save them first to the camera roll; then you can download them by connecting the iPad via USB.
What IOS version has your iPad?
For new photos you might consider using Photo Stream to transfer your photos between the devices.

  • The iPad cannot be synced. An unknown error occurred (1140).

Since updating my iPad to iOS 6 and updating iPhoto to 9.4, I have been receiving the error The iPad <name of my iPad> cannot be synced. An unknown error occurred (1140).
The syncing seems to be centered around photos. I used to have the box checked next to "Sync Photos from iPhoto" and now the only way that I can get the iPad to finish sync without error is to uncheck that box.
Any ideas how to fix this problem or what that code is?
A couple things that I should mention:
    1) Photo Stream is Off on my iPad.
    2) If you click on the Photo app it shows that there are no photos on the iPad. Screen says No Photos or Videos - You can take photos and videos using the camera, or sync photos and videos onto your iPad usining iTunes.
    3) If I go to Settings > General > Usage > Photos & Camera it shows that I have 4.2 GB of data used by photos and camera. Clicking on it, it shows that 3.7 GB is Photo Stream and 551 MB is Photo Library.
    4) If I got to the same usage screen on my iPhone 4 running iOS 6, Photo Stream is listed as 1.5 GB.
I can't seem to figure out how to get rid of the space on the iPad, but I assume this error as something to do with iTunes thinking there is a library on the iPad that isn't there. That's just me assuming though.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm having the same issue.  After updating all iOS devices to iOS 6, then updating all software on my iMac to the latest versions (including iPhoto 9.4), everthing was working as it should.  I was able to sync all of my devices (New iPad, iPod Touch, iPhone4) with the iMac early this morning.
Subsequently, I opened iPhoto for the first time since installing 9.4, a window popped up informing me that my photo library had to be converted to work with the iPhoto 9.4.  I clicked okay, and let the conversion process run its course.
About ten minutes later, I attempted to once again sync my iPad with the iMac.  The sync process would run for a few seconds, then stop with a window popping up saying "The iPad cannot be synced. An unknown error occurred (1140)".  I then attempted to sync the iPod and my iPhone, with the same results.
After consulting the discussion forums, it looked like lots of other users are encountering the same problem, and that it was somehow related to the new iPhoto.  Someone suggested turning off syncing photos from iPhoto, which I did.  With photo syncing turned off, the rest of the sync program now runs without a problem.
I've submitted a bug report to Apple.  Hopefully, enough other users have done the same, and Apple will fix whatever it is that's causing the problem.

  • ITunes 11: iPad 3 not syncing

I upgraded to iTunes 11 yesterday and now I can't get back my iPad 3 to sync. It is being recognized and shows up in iTunes, but when I click the "Sync" button, it starts syncing, backs up okay but also quits in the middle of "Determining which Apps to sync (Step 4/7)". There's no error message, it just stops.
This is happening over Wi-Fi and also when attached with an USB cable. Tried removing and reinstalling iTunes, rebooting my iMac, rebooting the iPad, resetting the iPad. I'm running Mountain Lion and the iPad is on the latest iOS.
My other 3 devices (iPad 2, iPhone 4, iPhone 5) are all being synced okay.
Anyone else experiencing this? Anyone got any tips?

Experiencing the same issue repeatedly with my iPhone 4S and iTunes 11, however, my first gen iPad syncs consistently without issue. I removed the app that was copying to the iPhone when iTunes crashed, and now it syncs w/o issue too.

  • IPad 3 not syncing music or videos from iTunes.  Can any one help?

Hi everyone!  First time in submitting a question for me.  Driven to doing it by my iPad 3 not syncing music with iTunes.  In fact it almost seems to be automatically deleting music from my iPad for some reason.  Had a look down similar questions and issues but not real solutions appear to be coming up.  Was working fine about 3 or so weeks ago then simply started developing this issue.  Backs up ok but then says it is waiting for the changes to be applied then a few seconds or so later it says it is complete when it isn't.
Hope Apple are looking into rectifying this?
All help gratefully received, thank you!!

Hi Graham2307 and everyone else.  I too have a similar problem, and similarly this is my first post also.  Apart from your question I found I couldn't find any similar questions or solutions.
I have quite a few different Apple products all of which have no problem with syncing, backing up and transfering purchases when I connect to itunes on my computer...... apart from my iPad 2 (iOS 7.0.4).  Apart from tonight the last time I connected my iPad 2 to my computer, about 3 weeks ago, there was no problem syncing.
Then when I have tried tonight to do the same the iPad backs up, then says that it is waiting for sync to start, preparing to sync, waiting for changes to be applied, but all of this takes less than 2 seconds and when i check the pad it hasn't synced my updated apps from my computer to the iPad.  I have kept re-syncing my iPad and sometimes the number of apps that need updating might reduce by a maximum of 2, but most times it doesn't reduce.  I am now stuck with 44 apps that are showing up on my iPad as needing to be updated.  There is no logical process or pattern to why it doesn't update and/or rarely updates 2.
I could update my apps from the App Store on my iPad, but i don't see why I should download them again when they are all up to date on my computer, when a simple sync to the computer and a couple of minutes wait and 'bob's your uncle' and 'fanny's your aunt' I can go on with using my iPad in blissful ignorance once more.
I'm sorry I haven't answered your question Graham2307, but merely added to the burden that yours is carrying.
I too hope Apple are looking into this as it has become a real pain keep pressing sync and hoping something might happen.
Any help would be appreciated, Many thanks!

  • Question Re iPad / i Phone sync

I think this is a pretty simple question.  I've had an iPad for years and yesterday I got my first iPhone. I do not want many of the apps for the iPad to be synced to the phone so here's my question.  Will iTunes remember these devices and sync each with the parameters I set up for each or will it just go with what ever the previous device uses?
    Thanks.

okay so i have tried all the suggestions on the help topic... i think the problem has to do with outlook connector because the two email addresses i use are live mail/msn addresses... any ideas?

  • IPad outlook 2010 sync issues

I used iCloud control panel to,wirelessly sync my iPad II with outlook 2010, windows xp pro.  First sync was successful.  All subsequent syncs have failed with an error message.   Also, when re synching, I didn't see an option to sync only changes.  The only option appearing was to re sync all calendar and contacts.

I finally resolved this... by changing everything over to a new laptop.  I had been running iTunes on a Vista desktop, and moved Outlook and iTunes to a Win7 x64 laptop.  Once I got everything installed, I copied the iTunes folder to the laptop, transferred the purchases, backed up the iPhone and iPad to the new iTunes, and then synched them.  Set iTunes to sync Calendar, Contacts, Mail, and Notes on both, and resynched.  Once this was done and I verified that everything was intact on both the iPhone and the iPad, I tried entering a calendar event on the phone and then did another sync.  The event showed up in Outlook.  I then deleted the event from Outlook and did another sync and the event was gone from the iPhone.  Did the same with the iPad and got the same results.  So this apparently was something related to the desktop or Vista; I never got it resolved on the desktop.  Not sure what it could be, but now that it's resolved I'm going to leave it alone.  Maybe after I upgrade to an iPhone 5, I might try messing with the iPhone 4s on the Vista desktop.  If I do, and happen to get it resolved, I'll surely post something regarding that.

  • TS3999 my Mac and Ipad calendars stopped syncing

my mac and ipad calendars stopped syncing. What do I need to do to get them to sync again?

First check that all your settings are correct, that calendar syncing is checked on all devices (system preferences > iCloud on a mac and settings > iCloud on a iPhone, iPad or iPod).
Make sure the calendars you are using are in your 'iCloud' account and not an 'On My Mac', 'On My Phone' or other non iCloud account (you can do this by clicking/tapping the calendar button in the top left corner of the application ), non iCloud calendars will not sync.
If you are sure that everything is set up correctly and your calendars are in the iCloud account, you might try unchecking calendar syncing in the iCloud settings, restarting your device and then re-enabling calendar syncing settings.

  • IPad 2 Not Syncing

When I press the Sync button, "Accessing iTunes Store" shows up and then "Checking for Downloads" is shown. After that, the Apple logo is shown like it always does when nothing is happening. Btw, this is all happening at the top-middle of iTunes; the gray curved box. Nothing is transferred into the iPad and no changes are made. Also, in a bit of a rage, I kind of deleted all my music so I'm music-less so quick replies would be appreciated! Thanks! (:

Yes, I don't remember seeing the "Accessing iTunes Store" sign earlier either, but it came this time. Yes, I use Windows.
No, I don't use Genius or anything like that.
Yes, I do have multiple iPad backups. Is that a bad thing? :/
Also, I just updated it to iOS 5.1.1 but it wasn't my first sync in which this problem occured. It was probably my 3rd or 4th sync. I also used Wi-Fi Sync after a long time before I noticed this problem. Could that have caused it? Sorry for not mentioning these things earlier.
And thanks for helping, hope I can find a solution soon.

  • Ipad crashes on syncing

Since the upgrade to 4.2 I can't sync my Ipad. Every time i plug it in it starts the process and then crashes the Ipad, freezing the bar on Itunes. I have tried restoring the Ipad from the backup and I have also tried reinstalling itunes. I am running itunes on a windows 7 PC. Any one got any other tips I can try to make it work? Thanks

Yep. Mine is doing the same thing. Every couple syncs (I usually do one every day) is hanging in the backup phase. The only way I have been able to get it to work again is to first do a complete reset on my iPad (pressing both buttons)*; trying to shut it down only yields a forever spinning wheel. Then I delete the most resent file in the Mobilesync > Backup folder. Then it syncs fine for another couple times; then hangs again.
    Help us Apple!
    * if I don't do this I get the message "iTunes could not back up the iPad because a session could not be started with the iPad" and "iTunes could not sync information to the iPad because another sync session was already running".

  • Is there a way of merging photos into one event on ipad mini without syncing from PC ?

is there a way of merging photos into one event on ipad mini without syncing from PC ?

Unfortunately cutting and pasting doesn't work.  The margins are so different for each document as the first document is a standard report with the text centered on the page while the second document is in the form of a letter that is off center toward the right side of the page.  Cutting and pasting either one into the other (I've tried both ways) alters both documents in a way that causes the images, quotes, etc that are interspersed throughout each of them to show up in the wrong place (and they cannot be moved to the correct location due to the differences in margin.
They really need to simply be placed end to end rather than trying to combine them into one.  This is apparently a simple thing with Pages on the Mac itself but it does not appear to be as simple with the iPad app.  Thanks anyway for your help.

  • Could not sync...because the iPad cancelled the sync

"itunes could not sync contacts to the ipad "user name" because the iPad cancelled the sync."
    OK
Actually it's not okay. I've erased and restored the iPad but that hasn't helped. This seems to have started when I swapped my wifi model for the new 3G version. The first sync seemed to go well and so did the next few and lately this is the message I get. Searches show this to be a problem on iPhones but the only answer seemed to be a full reset and restore which didn't help but took a long time.
    Any ideas?
    Gregor

    Only other things I can think of;
After another reset, try syncing just a small subset or only one category at ta time. Like just music or just books, etc.
If no category will sync, you can try to uninstall then reinstall itunes, but I am not sure this will help. On PC's it does, but not sure with mac's.
After that, contact the experts at: http://www.apple.com/support/expert/

  • Connect to computer to refresh iPad 2 wifi sync 7.1.1

Not a question as much as a suggestion.
I recently began syncing my iPad 2 via wifi using iTunes and my iMac.
I apologize for not getting the precise wording of the prompt which appeared on my iPad 2 screen during the install of IOS 7.1.1, but it went something like:
'Connect to computer to refresh iPad 2 wifi sync'
I did as I was prompted and as I recall after connecting my iPad 2 to my iMac there were on-screen prompts which had to be answered in order to proceed with the operation, something like 'Trust the computer to which the iPad is connected?' and a similar prompt on my iMac's monitor. After answering both in the affirmative the operation was completed. A few seconds later I get another iMac alert to the effect that the sync could not complete because the iPad could not be found, or words to that effect. Initially I had this sinking feeling, wondering what else might go wrong so I began to click the tabs / buttons at the top of my iTunes iPad 2 interface to discover that my photos seemed to be missing, etc.
It's easy to over-think a situation like this and while I do not profess to be any sort of an Apple guru, I have been a Mac user since the release of the very first Black and White Mac Classic which is to say I have owned and operated my share of Apple 'devices' over the years and have found that sometimes the most effective 'fix' for a problem is to do nothing at all EXCEPT to restart, so that's what I did. I quit iTunes and while it wasn't running I restarted my iPad 2. After my iPad was completely up and running I re-opened iTunes and eureka! Problem solved.

I guess "a reboot" might have been a little ambiguous, but I meant that I restarted OS X (10.8.5, iTunes 11.1, iPad on 5.1.1, iPhone 3Gs on 6.1.3, iPhone 5s (originally not showing up) on 7.0.2).
Prior to that I had rebooted the iPhone 5s a couple of times, connected via cable and toggled WiFi sync settings a few times, restarted iTunes a few times, attempted to "Sync Now" from the iPhone 5s (connected to power and not) a few times. None of these actions had any apparent effect.
I also renamed the iPhone 5s, which originally had the same name as the 3Gs, but that didn't appear to make any difference either, and probably isn't at all problematic, nor is it part of your scenario.
The only other thing I did that might have been related was to assign the iPhone 5s a DHCP reservation on the router, which the other devices already had, effectively giving it a fixed IP. But, even that appeared to make no difference. It was only after I restarted OS X that it showed up. The iPad showed up first, and fairly quickly, the iPhone 5s, finally, after a delay of maybe a minute or more.
The OS X restart was almost certainly the first restart after installing iTunes 11.1, so it's possible the install wasn't able to take care of everything it needed to w/o the restart.
Your "Automatically sync..." option is probably disabled because you have the "Prevent iPods, iPhones and iPads from syncing automatically" option (iTunes Preferences/Devices) turned on. My "Prevent..." option is unchecked and "Automatically sync..." is checked, as well as having "Sync ... over WiFi" checked.
