IPad 2 Folders

How do I rename a folder on the iPad2? I tried doing what it said from the manual and it doesn't work.

I tried your suggestion (the same as in the manual) and it doesn't work. However, I did a little more research and got it to work. First, you have to get the apps to jiggle. Then when you open the folder, you can touch the title bar and rename it.

  • IPad Folders will not appear after restore. PLEASE HELP!

    Hi guys,
first of all thank you all. I am new at this forum and I see it is very helpfull. I have a little annoying problem. I have an iPad 1. I have done a constant back up, but when I had to restore it from the last back up I did, everything was synched back to my iPad except the fact that all chosen apps where all messed up and the folders were gone. Can somebody tell me for the future how can I do a back and avoid that after restoring all apps are messed up and make sure the iPad reappears exactely how it was (folders included)? Many thankx in advance.

I copied this from a post a while back. For some reason the iPad likes to "blow up" the folder structure for some users from time to time. This is NOT my advice, but I thought it was interesting reading and it DID seem to make sense.
I have never experienced this destruction of folders myself when syncing and I have never restored my iPad. See if this won't help you in the future.
There is a secret as to why you are losing your folder arrangements.
They can automatically unpack on a sync.
We should all know there are screens off to the right of the valid eleven home pages. If your last page is full of icons and you inadvertently add another something is shoved off to the right. If you move home screens around using iTunes this also happens.
If any icon filled with apps falls off to the right it will unpack and make a mess. If you move a home page filled with folders which are filled with icons around you can lose them all as they will unpack when you sync to iTunes.
The best choice is to take the right most page and MAKE SURE NO FOLDERS ARE EVER IN THE RIGHT MOST PAGE. That gives you safety room from inadvertently scooting one or more folders into higher number screens. I place a few standard apps in the right most page to hold it in place.
    CREATING FOLDERS
Second you are safer building your folders on the device itself. To do this I move everything off the bottom bar and use it as a placeholder (bus)to shuttle apps around as I figure out what group they should be added to. I have over 800 apps in 22 GB on the iPad now. Things are well organized and nice looking when scanning the home pages.
When setting it up I just added all the apps at once. Then as I made room on the home screens I paused made sure my 'bus' was empty, then shut down the iPad to power off and back on again. This cleans up memory and on reboot the iPad will add as many of the hidden apps to the space on your eleven home pages. There after it became a session of rinse and repeat until all the apps I wanted where filed away and arranged.
    Use meaningful folder names.
    Apps from **
There are some real junk apps that some how I managed to grab in the past. Others are surpassed by obviously more powerful and functional apps that have recently appeared so there is no sense in keeping them. If you delete them off the iPad they will reappear on the next sync unless you delete them from iTunes.
How do you remember to delete them from iTunes too? When I get to the delete confirmation screen I take a screenshot which is stored in my Photos roll. Then I browse that roll while before the computer and find each app that needs to be permanently deleted. After deleting it from the PC I then delete the reminder picture.

  • How to Improve the Appearance of iPad Folders

I have created folders on my iPad each containing apps that are of a similar type (e.g., a folder named "Shopping" contains all of my shopping-related apps such as Amazon, Zappos, Groupon, Yelp). This is very handy, BUT these folders are very UGLY and the description is hard to read against the screen wallpaper.
Is there anyway to improve the appearance of these "Folder Icons"? Even if you could change the color of the font description (from the default white), this would be a big help. Another mobile operating system (Android 4.1.2) does this by displaying the icon of the first app in the folder as the icon for the folder along with the folder Description below the icons. This allows you to use a "representative icon" to remind you visually of the contents. There may be better solutions, but anything would be better than how the existing app folder appear.
If not available, I hope the iOS software engineers will either fix this or create a way for an app developer to create a way to improve the appearance (I couldn't find any app on the Apple Store which can help with app folder appearance).
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks...

  • IPad Folders VANISH and Apps scattered with every update or restore

With the introduction of folders for iOS there has been an issue since DAY ONE!  New devices (upgrades), restoring from backups, and iOS updates ALL screw up your folders.   I have spent HOURS sorting though my 400+ apps and putting them into folders (BTW the current iTunes UI does not work well when you have MANY apps...I have a feeling that all tests are done with a handful of apps and does not reflect the average user with hundreds of apps)
With every update or restore, the Folder information is all lost and apps are scattered onto 20+ pages of apps.  Some folders remain but all but 2 apps remain in them.  Some pages are created with only 2-3 apps on them.  No mater what I do, there is no fix.  Someone on the Apple Care Senior Tech Support said it happens to her all the time and that it is "expected".
I know this isn't NEW to anybody because the Apple support community is LOADED with similar complaints.  I have included links below.  It is obvious that it is a BUG with iOS and needs to be addressed please.   I was told by the Apple Care support person that the only solution would be to bombard you with the complaint.  It seems like support has been bombarded all ready yet there isn't any communication going on between the two units.
Please ADDRESS.  I will not install any more updates until the problem is fixed.

Did you put the iPad into Recovery Mode? Follow the steps in this Apple support document:
If you can't update or restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
It could be an internal hardware failure though, as the Apple technician explained. While not common these things do happen. If that's the case you options are to replace the iPad with an identical model using the Out of Warranty replacement process and paying the $299 fee or purchase a new replacement iPad.

  • We need to be able to lock ipad folders. (or is there an app I cant find?)

We use our ipad as a communication and education tool for my son who has autism.  I want him to have free access to certain apps, but not others.  I would think the ability to lock an app folder is the simplest solution and I don't know why this is not a function of the ipad - it seems pretty rudimentry. The same goes for protecting videos/photos. We use a lot for augmented communication as well as video modelling and this week he deleted most of them (before I had a chance to back up).  The ipad is very obviously being promoted in a special needs setting (indeed it is seen as revolutionary for families with non verbal children), this is one thing that would significantly improve the product for our market.

The best thing is to send them feedback.  Given the increased popularity of the device for education and special needs people I can certainly see how some control is needed.
If restrictions doesn't help enough you could try separating his apps onto their own page  and see if that helps to keep him on task and away from things he shouldn't be accessing.

  • I need to know how to lock ipad folders

Is it possible put password on apps and folders?

No apps can lock a app folder - some individual apps allow you to set a password to access that app, but due to iOS being sandboxed an app cannot prevent access to other apps.

  • Ipad / iphone photo sync folders list error

After syncing 3rd gen ipad with PC, iphone 6 unnecessarily re-syncs all the photo folders that are unchecked for the ipad's sync!  Of the 14,000 photos I need to sync, it re-syncs 4500 unnecessarily and takes over 1 hr.  iPad has only selected folders checked for sync.  iPhone has all folders.  I can sync the iphone successfully in succession, put then if I sync the ipad, the next iphone sync unnecessarily re-syncs all those unchecked ipad folders.

  • IPad & iPhone Hotmail Folders Empty

    iPhone & iPad folders empty
Sometime recently, perhaps after updating my iPhone and iPad to iOS 6, I noticed mail is missing from many of my HotMail folders on those devices. My account is set up as an Exchange account. I have since deleted it from my iPad and added it back as a new Exchange account. My Inbox repopulated with a small number of existing emails, but just a few of the 100 plus emails that are accessible via a web browser on my desktop computer. Likewise for my Sent mail and Trash. None of the folders I created on my own populated on my iPad of iPhone with the emails that are in them and which are accessible via desktop and web browser.
If I send a new email message to my account, then after it arrives I move it using my desktop to one of the folders I created, it shows up just fine. In other words, there doesn't seem to be any problem with new emails, just earlier, preexisting emails. I tried using my desktop to move emails from one folder to another to see if they would then populate on my iPad, but that didn't help. I tried marking them as unread. That didn't help either.
I cannot find a way to make preexisting emails show up in the folders on my iPad or iPhone.
Has anybody encountered this before? Is this a known bug? More importantly, is there a fix or a workaround?
    Thanks.

    Thank you.
I found the answer. It was operator failure, my fault. In the settings on my iPhone and iPad there is a setting called Mail Days to Sync. I had this set to a short duration. When I changed it to No Limit, all the older mail was properly populated into their respective folders.

  • Can I copy an iPad email message to a folder?

In "Mail" on my home computer, I can copy messages to a local (on this MAC) folder, which leaves them intact in the Inbox on the IMAP server, so that I can "see them" in the inbox when I am at my office computer. The folders on my home and office computers are the type that are on the computer irself and not the IMAP server for security reasons, to have extra "back-up" copies if needed, and because I save different types of messages in the 2 locations. In iPad "Mail" it appears that the only option is to "move" a message to a folder. This moves it out of the inbox, so it will not appear in the inbox when I open "Mail" on my home or office computer. The iPad folders are ones that I created on the IMAP server using my home computer and then synced to my iPad, (which also as far as I could tell is the only way to create folders on iPad "Mail" until OS5 comes along). These folders would be visible to me at my office, but I would have to remember to look in the folder to copy the message to a "local folder", instead of just being able to copy it from my inbox. One workaround is to never store an email in an iPad folder until I have copied it on the other computers. But, since I often get to the email first on my iPad, especially while traveling, I would prefer to just copy messages to the IMAP folders if it is possible. Is there a "copy message to" option for iPad "Mail"?

I do the same thing - leave the email in the inbox and mark it as unread. There is no "copy to" option in the iPad Mail App. As you stated, you can move the messages to other folders that you have in your account. There may be third party mail apps that let you do what you want to do but not in the Mail App.
This is from a very quick Google search simply to let you know there are alternatives to the mail app.

  • ITunes not syncing App layout or folders to iPad (iTunes 10.1/iPad 4.2.1

I eagerly awaited 4.2.1 to finally put my apps into folders on my iPad. I have nearly 300 apps which are unorganized, many not accessible from the standard iPad screens since they go beyond the 11 app pages.
I spent a bunch of time making folders and organizing this mess using the brand new iTunes 10.1, iPad 4.2.1 and on my Apply / Sync, ALL of the time customizing was lost -- none of the folders appeared on the Ipad after the sync.
I tried even moving 1 app from another screen, and it didn't sync over.
I then made a couple folders on the iPad directly, and when reconnected to iTunes, I see these folders. Any subsequent alterations made on iTunes don't sync over.
I wonder if this is related to going over my 11th screen limit?
I dread dealing with all of these using only the iPad. I know it’s a lot of apps, but that's what folders are for!
Anyone else not getting iTunes to sync folders/app arrangements with iTunes 10.1 and iPad 4.2.1?

I have this issue as well. I have an iPhone 3G 16GB, just updated to the latest iTunes and 4.2.1 firmware. I'm on Windows 7 Professional 64-bit. I've spend like 1,5 hours total reorganizing apps, all for nothing.

  • I am so sick of the crappy way iTunes and iPad handle app folders.

I'm a long-time iPad user who, for various reasons, has accumulated over 500 apps. It is absolutely essential that I keep my apps organized into folders. This requires a lot of folders, too: with a maximum of 20 apps per folder, that's at least 25 folders.
What prompted this message is that after the last time a major software update decimated my carefully-constructed folder organization (which itself is inexcusable), I spent two hours with the horrible iTunes interface dragging and dropping and creating new folders and getting everything re-organized, finally, only to have iTunes fail to sync the changes to my iPad.
It synced, but afterwards, the iPad still had its old folder layout, and iTunes still indicated the new one. I power-cycled the iPad and tried syncing again: same thing. I quit and re-launched iTunes and synced again, and lo, iTunes wiped all the tedious work I'd done and just copied the defective organization back from the iPad into iTunes.
This isn't a one-time thing. It's consistently been the most time-consuming, time-wasting aspect of owning an iPad, and really, it's inexcusable for Apple to have let this go on and on for so long.
Why not just let them float free instead of constantly hitting my head against the "folder wall" and gradually move the ones I use a lot to early pages? Well, it turns out that if you have too many apps installed, the iPad doesn't show them all: there's a limit to how many pages of apps it will show. Dang it.
Why not use the search page to get to my apps? Well, I could, but some of them are named in unfortunate ways. (Also, when you search for an app, it doesn't indicate whether it's located in a folder nor in which folder it's located. That's not just stupid: it's caused me to go manually poking through folder after folder to find an app that I've "mis-filed".)
And if you have multiple iDevices? I recently jumped from Android to iPhone, and guess what: I had to go through the whole, pain-staking process of creating a folder organization for the phone, because I couldn't use the iPad's as a template. I did learn my lesson, though: the iPhone only has installed the apps that I use on a regular basis. At least that cuts down on the length of the pain if not the intensity.
C'mon, Apple, get a clue! This app folder "organization" is about as crappy as it gets. (Though you have a bad history of poor organization: how long did it take to get photo albums?) Please, please, please, if you can't at least get the novice-programmer-stupid-bugs out of your folder sync/iTunes logic, come up with an alternative.
Here, I can think of a REALLY EASY one right off the bat: let me tag my apps and search/access them via tags. (Oh, say, then maybe I could just have a "smart folder" to make them easier to find.) (What? Be able to organize apps in more than two dimensions?) Or at least make the drag-and-drop-to-move-apps interface (on both the iPad and iTunes) less fragile and frustrating.
Back to bashing my head against the wall... thanks for listening.

I've had a not-so-rewarding experience with one of Apple's support-issue-submission forms. It was a reminder that as much as I'd prefer to think otherwise, Apple may be unusual, but it's just another company where it's not possible for everyone to be "above average".
Frankly, I'd be happy in this case if iTunes dropped an XML file with apps-in-folders, let me mess with it, and then loaded and applied it to shuffle things around. That's one thing I love about OS X, but then that also allows one to be too smart for one's own good. Be careful what I ask for, I guess...

  • HT4236 I got an iPad 4 and I tried to sync my photos but it grouped all 5,000 photos into 1 huge album instead of keeping the subfolder seperation. How do I get it to keep the different folders?

One time when I tried to sync my iphone 5 it did this but I resync'd it and it worked. But my new ipad sync'd them all into 1 folder and I'm not sure how to fix it.
    Help.

Did you try resyncing the iPad like you did with the iPhone?
I assume that you do realize that you can only sync one level of subfolders within the main photos folder - you can sync a folder within a folder inside the main photos folder.
You might want to try resyncing - but not all of subfolders at once. Sync a few folders, then sync a few more, then a few more. But remember that you have to include all of the already synced subfolders in each subsequent sync or the photos will be erased from the iPad.

  • Since I updated to iTunes 11.0, I can no longer manage my photos, contacts!  When I sync my phone or iPad back to my computer the info is there, but I can't organize to sync the folders that I want on my iPad and iPhone.  What do I do.

I can no longer organize anything in iTunes but music since upgrading to 11.0.  My photos are caught in limbo, I can sync and all end up on my computer as it should.  However, there is no way to send back to the iPad the proper folders for customers it s all in the camera roll.  Contacts are array.  What do I do.

Removed. Re-synced. Still not working. Factory reset the phone, re-installed music... made a GIANT "Other" file instead of actually adding any songs.
Factory resetting again. Any other solutions?
EDIT: If It helps, I'm doing this all over USB connection, not trying to sync music through wifi or anything.

It is a hard one.. laptops with small drives are a pain.
What you need is a home media server.
Some people use a PC running itunes for cost.. but that is nothing like as good as using a Mac mini.. they make great little HTPC device.. you can plug in large hard disks and store all your files and media. And share it with the network.. Read up apple's instructions on home sharing.
    https://www.apple.com/au/support/homesharing/
For cost you can buy a mini from 2011 or 2012.. I would not recommend earlier ones.. the advantage of 2012 is they have USB3 ports. But you will pay more for them.. new mini is not as useful.. they have soldered in memory and you cannot upgrade.. the old mini was the most easily modified mac in the whole range. Uses little power and can be bought for a $300US for a good one second hand.. maybe less.
