My IMessage keeps crashing? How do I fix?

    Hi,
The error Log shows that it is an In/out error with sandboxing.
Sandboxing is a way of separating out the various app so that if one Crashes it does not  effect other things.
When an app starts up it tends to Read the .plists linked with it. In some cases it Writes to the .plist(s)
Prior to Sandboxing iChat and Messages 7 in Mountain Lion would Read and Write to the .plists straight in ~/Library/Preferences
The Sandboxing Writes to the .plists by using  the path ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.iChat/Data/Library/Preferences
It then tends to find that the .plist here is an Alias pointing to the Originals.
    I would do the following.
Open any Finder Window and then use the View Menu > Show Path Bar
Now use the Go Menu whilst Holding down the ALT key and select the Library that appears (it is hidden and this is one access option)
    Now navigate to the Containers/com.apple.iChat/Data/Library/Preferences
The window should now look a bit like this
Now Right click the Preferences folder far right and select the Get Info option.
This will open the Info Panel.
At the bottom is the Ownership and Permissions items
Your Shortname (As under the Little House icon in Icon view in the Users folder) should appear with the word Me next to it.
If you highlight this and then usee the Cogwheel type icon under the list you should find it says "Make yourshortname (Me) the Owner" but in greyed out Text as it should already be done.
As the pic shows you should also have Read and Write permissions to it.
Repeat the process on all the folders until you have done the furthest left Library one (the ~/Library)
Picture of Right Clicking that folder.
Basically we are checking that you Own and have Permissions to Write to the ~/Library and the other folders involved in the Sandboxing route to the .plists  (the phrase would be "containing folders" but as Containers is laso part of the route/path I had tried to avoid it).
If there is a sort of note above the list saying you have Custom Access then something has been changed.

What exactly do you mean by "crashing" and is it occuring on a specific app or under specific circumstances?

  • IPad 1 safari keeps crashing!!!!

I have had an apple iPad 1st generation and safari keeps crashing. I have deleted cookies, restarted it, stop apps running in the background and still crashes, very VERY frustrating and I am not paying £500 for a product to behave like this!

Try restoring the device now. If closing all apps and clearing Safari doesn't work, I think that's your next step. Make sure that you backup first so that you can restore from the backup.

  • My iPad gen one keeps crashing while I'm right in the middle of stuff especially while online

Hi my iPad gen keeps crashing.  It happens during apps usage, and Internet use mostly.  Usually it happens right when I'm writing a message. Sometimes my apps won't even start up, it's like I'm frozen in time.  My software is up to date so I'm not sure what else to do.

  • My iPad first generation keeps crashing. I have tried all of the suggestions on the forum and they work for a little while but it crashes again. Very frustrated

My iPad keeps crashing and I have tried all suggestions and they worked but not for long. Any suggestions?  Very frustrated.

If you really tried all of the suggestions in all of the forums, there is nothing left to try. Make an appointment at an Apple Store and ask for their help. They have more sophisticated means of diagnosing and restoring than we have as device users.

  • My iPad first generation keeps crashing

I have had an iPad for a little more than a year and I have had no problems with it. But just today I tried to use it and every app crashes. It worked perfectly before but now it keeps crashing. Is there any way I could fix this problem and maybe even make it a little faster. Thanks

Not normal. Take it to an Apple Store for evaluation.

  • I have the first iPad, and it keeps crashing no matter what program(safari) app (iTunes) or game I use. I check the updates regularly and I'm up to date. Why does it keep crashing and how can I fix it?

I have the first iPad (which is considered ancient). I'll open safari and no matter what I'm searching after a few minutes it crashes (it will close safari and bring me back to the main app screen). The last few days I've been searching song on iTunes, and I have the same issue. It closes my iTunes and brings me to the main app screen.
I have checked my updates and everything is current for this iPad. It's a 64gb iPad with 54gb of available space so I know it's not a storage issue.
Does anyone have some pointers on how to keep it from crashing all the time?

    Try This...
Close All Open Apps...  Perform a Reset... Try again...
Reset  ( No Data will be Lost )
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears. Release the Buttons.

  • Ipad 1st gen keeps crashing since 5.1

My 1st gen ipad keeps locking up and then rebooting to the apple logo since updating to 5.1.  It doesn't seem to matter how long the device has been in use, there is no pattern in terms of which apps are being used.  I've reset to factory in itunes and restored from a back-up, took several tries because ipad kept rebooting while trying to transfer purchased items to itunes.  Finally got those to complete and then performed the wipe and restore. Issue persists. Occasionally screen will go "crazy" before crashing producing oddly colored rectangles all over the screen. This usually requires a manual hard reset (sleep and home button for 10 seconds) before reboot will occur. I heard this may have something to do with multi-touch navigation so I turned that off.  No difference.  I've noticed a trend towards certain apps causing this more readily than others (mail app, moog anology synth app, snyth x app, all of the korg apps, beatmaker 2, etc), but it doesn't seem to really matter. Basically things that worked without issue ever, are suddenly locking up or rebooting my ipad. Right now it rebooted while trying to terminate apps running in background (a grand total of 3), which is something I do rather religiously to free up memory. Some crashes are just a black screen that wont go away unless a manual reset is performed.
I use this device quite extensively for the music apps (which at this point is also a rather hefty dollar investment in and of itself), but the crashing issue is out of control.  Is there a way to downgrade the device to 4.3 or even 5.0 (I had zero problems with 5.0 oddly enough) without jailbreaking it?
I'm willing to admit (begrudgingly) that this could be a hardware failure and I'm SOL. I'd like to be able to at least try another version of iOS to either confirm or deny that is the issue.
Just did the rainbow rectangles of death again, manual reboot, automatic reboot, lock to black screen, manual reboot, and now it says the battery is empty ,but it was just at 80%.  *** is going on with thing?

I ended up doing that the other day.  I was told that there was an error in updating the firmware to iOS 5.1 and that it wasn't rewrite-able and not fixable.  I was further told that there is probably a problem with the dock connector which probably caused the update to write data intermittently.  Additionally I was told that as I didn't opt for apple care, my 1 year warranty expired 1 month 2 weeks ago (I bought the iPad 13 1/2 months ago), and that a replacement would be over $250 and a decent amount of wait time, which because of contracted work load I can't afford to miss out on I couldn't wait the time it would take for shipping.
I have two real problems with what I was told: 1. I didn't use the dock connector to update the iOS, I did that wirelessly through the settings app. 2. I was told Apple's iOS update broke my previously fully functional iPad.
I ended up replacing it with an iPad 2 16gb wifi model, which they insisted they didn't have, but actually did. In my choice of either white or black. There was a real strong push for me to drop $500 for an iPad 3 without much consideration to the fact that I did that just over a year ago.
Lesson learned on my part, if I didn't need that apps I've already purchased that I use to generate income, I'd be done with the iPad forever.

  • IPad Air Apps keep crashing after iOS 7.1 Update

Hi, I just upgraded to ios 7.1 on my ipad air. Everything was working fine before the update. But after, everytime I try to open any app, it attempts to start, but then immediately crashes. Even when I download an app from the app store, it still crashes. I have tried everything (restart, reset, hard reset, etc.) and I can't think of anything else to do but replace it which I don't want to do.

    Hello jscott1997,
It sounds like all your apps are closing when you open them, even new apps are doing the same thing. I recommend starting by closing all the open apps on the phone:
iOS: Force an app to close
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5137
    Double-click the Home button.
Swipe left or right until you have located the app you wish to close.
Swipe the app up to close it.
When you have done that and restart the phone and test the issue again:
iOS: Turning off and on (restarting) and resetting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430
If it persists, I would next backup your device to iTunes with this article:
iOS: How to back up and restore your content
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766
And restore it from your backup with the steps in the following article. These steps will erase, and re install the iOS software, so that when you restore from the back up it is not restoring on top of the previous iOS installation:
Use iTunes to restore your iOS device to factory settings

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the very best,

  • IPad (gen 1) keeps crashing

    Hi,
Randomly, but more and more often my original 32 GB WiFi iPad crashes. Totally unforced. No matter what I do. I finally was able to catch it on cam today. On this clip it first crashes with multiple stripes on screen, which is most common, then later with blue screen.
    Does anybody have a clue?
    Hardware failiure?
As we speak, I'm doing a restore, but I'm sure this will have no effect, since I had this problem since iOS 4.
