IPad 2 - Intermittent screen flicker

Hi all,
I bought my iPad 2 at Best Buy on release day, and since then, aside from the light leakage issue, I am seeing very random screen flickers...like one or two a day while I'm using it. The flicker occurs while I'm in apps as well as just looking throughh my app screens...even when there is no interaction with the screen. It's driving me a bit bonkers, as I've never bought what seems to be a defective Apple product before. This iPad is currently in some generic case that was at Best Buy and it has not been dropped, damaged, or gotten wet (hopefully never will!). Is anyone else experiencing this, too? I googled and did not see any posts or articles where anyone mentioned this. Hopefully Apple can fix this with an update. If anyone has any suggestions, feel free to share.
Thanks!

Is this whats happening to you?

  • IPad 2 screen flicker when quickly sleep then wake. can people test this on their iPad 2?

    Hi.
As the title says if i quickly press the sleep/wake button a few times quickly there will be a screen flicker with lines on the screen for a split second, can people test this for me to see if it's software related? 3 of the 5 ipad's i've tested this on has the issue. Does your iPad 2 do this? thanks

This is happening to a lot of iPad 2's. Glad it wasn't just me.
I had my first iPad 2 from the uk launch day and I was disappointed when I realised mine was showing significant lines on the screen when it was activated. It gradually got worse until the point I had to take it back tothe retailer I bought it from (comet uk). I was appaled with their 3 DAY retun period. But, after a loooooong phonecall to their head office and AppleCare and with a great deal of arguing they gave my money back. I then bought one from the apple store. Got home and found that the SAME THING was happening. But worse.
Took it back yet again and got another that finally works.
Just to let you all know it is a hardware fault and it isn't normal. Take it back to wherever you got it. It isn't a software glitch either as I updated to the latest at the time with no luck. Tried wiping all my data off it too with no luck.
I've lost my respect for my iPad 2 and apple as it's ridiculous that everybody hypes the products and then when you spend all that money it doesn't work. Third time lucky though, eh?

  • IPAD 4 screen flicker in App store as well as browsing via safari and vdownloader. I tried restore and reset, but still the same...

    Hi everyone,
I just have my new Ipad4 last January 27, I noticed that while downloading a certain Apps in App Store then scrolling to look for more application, my screen would flicker like flashing or something blinking on it. I don't know what happened, why is it like that? Is it somewhat connected with hardware problem or does Ios 6 version still have a bug? I've tried using safari and other video downloader like vdownloader and I tried searching in youtube, still the same dilemma, it flicker also while browsing some video. Is it hardware problem? I already reset and restore my IPAD thou its a new one still the same dilemma happened again. What should I do? It was a gift for me and I'm really worried about it. Hope you could help me regarding it. Thank you so much.

Not normal. Take it to an Apple Store for evaluation.

  • Intermittent screen flicker

I have a macbook pro retina mid 2012.
Over the past 3-4 months I've noticed a brief intermittent flickering of the screen. It affects the entire screen & lasts for 1 second only and then everything is back to normal. I had a disatrous experience with my first macbook, so I'm worried about this mac. Could this be a software issue?  Does anybody have any ideas or experience of this issue, or should I just go to the genius bar?
    Thanks

It's funny, mine was doing that as well and at least over the past week it's not done it? I have the Early 2013 Retina MacBook Pro and I used Mountain Lion until Mavericks developer preview was released. It wasn't long after that when I started to see the problem. I assumed back then it was an OS issue and that Apple would have it worked out by the final release. To my surprise I still had the issue after I did a clean install of the OS. I've read a few accounts that people had taken their machines in for repair only to get them back with the same problem even after a logic board replacement. I even read a post from someone who said they had the whole display assembly replaced along with the logic board and still had this issue. Furthermore, I've read a story or two that suggests that Apple may have overlooked an RF issue. The theory with this was that the WiFi antennas in the display bezel were interfering with LCD controller thereby causing the display to flicker. In one instance someone suggested that this problem was most noticeable when the WiFi AP was operating on channel 1. It went on to say they did not notice any issues if they changed their WiFi AP to channel 6. If you happen to see your display doing this I might suggest you press the "option" key on your keyboard and click on your WiFi icon on the task bar. This among other things will display what channel you're currently using. If you're on channel 1 and know how to change your AP's channel selection to 6 or 11 I would try to do that to see if that corrects the problem. Even if it fixes the problem to me it's not acceptable to have to make these changes. I would let Apple know what you found out and that you would like to have the issue rectifiied. If it is truly an RF issue I would bet Apple is fully aware of the issue and have some type of fix that will need to be implamented. Please let me know how things work out for you and by all means feel free to reply to this message.

  • Watching iTunes Move creates intermittent black flicker on screen

    Hi friends,
I have a problem with my PC connected to my HDTV.
I have a small ASROCK Vision PC running Windows 8 and the latest version of iTunes which is connected via the amplifier to the HDTV.
For some reason when I start watching anything in HD, I get a black screen flicker every minute or so, its extremely annoying.
Everything seems to carry on ok though until the next flicker.
If I stop the movie, the flicker keeps coming on the screen every 1 minute, except when I close down iTunes then it goes away. I have reinstalled iTunes multiple times but no success.
Anyone run in to this problem before?
    Thanks
    Matthew Hardman

    You have somehow enabled VoiceOver!
Turn it off in System Preferences/Universal Access/Seeing, or try clicking F5.

  • How can I reproduce my screen flicker so they'll believe me?

The intermittent nature of the annoying screen flicker on my Macbook makes it difficult to show a tech that it is a real problem and not some figment of my imagination. Does anybody know of a "sure fire" way of reproducing it? I have been able to recreate the rapid dimming and brightening of my Macbook screen by moving the brightness indicator all the way to the left and then bumping it up one click. This only works sometimes and it only works when I do it by clicking and dragging on the ball on the display screen in system prefs. It doesn't work by using f1 and f2. I made a video of my screen while it was flickering and put the video on the desktop. I'm sending it in as soon as my box arrives on Tuesday. They're also replacing my stained top case. I hope they will look at the video and at least test the inverter and cable to see if they're the problem. Any help with how to encourage them would be greatly appreciated.
    macbook   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

I am the victim of this problem also. The screen flickering & brightness of the screen suddenly fade to low intensity. The screen flickering happened everytime I use my MacBook.
May MacBook was the initial Jun 2006 version.
I already get those problems (a) sudden shutdown (replace the logic board), (b) palm rest area discoloration (change the bottom case), (c) power adaptor pin contact problem (replace the new one), (d) poor performance of battery life (awaiting confirmation from local Apple support, 180cycle max. charge only 50% of initial capacity) & (e) screen flicker issue (today just send in my MacBook for them to do diagnostic).
I really lost confident with my MacBook.
Should I request a replacement of entire MacBook?
My warranty period will be expired mid of next month & the are asking me to purchase the apple protection plan. But, I claim that the unit is poor in initial build quality & why I should considered the plan. It is unfair to me.
If the MacBook is in good condition then I will consider the plan for support another 2 years (fair), not in this reverse way.
Anybody please guide me how to pursue this matter.
I previously own an iBook G4 & PowerBook G4 TI don't have these problem at all.

  • Qosmio F10-124 - Pixelated screen, flicks into blank, then comes back to normal

It looks like the graphics hardware has failed on a pc bought in April 2005.
This occurred in stages, starting from around the time when I received
    1) An automatic download of windows updates and
    2) And Adobe upgrade.
In Sept 07. Do not know if this is at all related with the screen malfunctioning.
The screen has at best operated intermittently, with only access being possible using the external VGA port.
The latest Toshiba screen drivers for the WMD operating system did not rectify the problem.
In the last couple of days pixilation has occurred in various parts of the External monitor screen, whilst the laptop was just blank, up to that point the external screen was displaying my work just fine. Occasionally the laptop screen flicked into life and the pixilation has become more prevalent recently. The occurrences of the laptop screen working were random.
I need to have the screen settings such that the external monitor is a mirror of the Laptop screen to do anything on the laptop.
Rebooting the PC has no effect.
The latest symptoms are that the external screen shows that the OS has booted, but there is an alignment problem causing a pattern to appear across the screen, and this is "ghosted" ?? with several iterations of all screen events across the width of the screen output. The Laptop screen is not working at all at present.
Anyone have any ideas what could have caused this, and/or how to fix it??

The graphic card chip seems to malfunction. Your described issue sounds really like a chip fault
But please note that this is only my personal assumption and if you want to be 100% sure whats wrong then you will have to contact the service provider in your country for a detailed check.
In worst case the motherboard must be replaced because the GPU chip is fixed on the motherboard and cannot be removed.

  • Screen flicker ios 5

ever since i upgraded to 5, i have occasional, but annoying, screen flicker.  sometimes it actually goes black for a split second.  i have not noticed any change inbattery drain.  anyone else having this problem?  this is on 1st gen iPad.

Go into settings then into brightness setting and try turning it off, then reset your iPad and see if it stops doing it. Also there is a light sensor on the top of the iPad that adjust the light,do do have you hand over that ?

  • IPad Mini Screen very sensitive

    Hello!
Who owns an iPad Mini (whether retina or not does not may not be such a big difference) and does like me have the annoyance that the screen is really sensitive to pressure ...
I had my new iPad Retina mini swapped because the volume down button stuck.
In the Apple store a replacement product has been ordered and a few days later they swapped it out.
At home I realized that the new iPad's screen is much more sensitive. Press the display a little harder while for example playing a game in which you press the screen a bit more energetic, the display under the glass throws rainbow colors back and forth ...
So I demonstrated it at the Apple store and a replacement was ordered again.
Few days later I picked it up and behold, the display is even MORE sensitive.
I have now made a picture.
I'm not trying to crush the display, I press only a little harder than normal usage. And I'm relatively slim ... What will a stronger craftsman do with his iPad Mini? :-P
    This is not normal right?
Clearly it appears on every screen when you press it hard enough. But it should not show up THAT fast, and that's not the case with the exhibits at the Apple Store ...
What do you think? Swap again?
Does anyone besides me have this experience / this "problem" ?

Yes I have this problem too!!
It's what you would get on an LCD TV (which doesn't have a glass front) if you swiped your finger along the screen.
My toddler son has been doing some apps such as colour and shape sorting and when you click and drag the item across the screen I noticed this too. Thought he might be pressing too hard but when I did it it doesn't take a lot of pressure to see it.
The online help stated it shouldn't happen and arranged a call back for me. The first guy I spoke to went and tried the iPad mini retina  they keep in the office for trials and testing and he said it shouldn't do that.
I had to have three call backs in total as I had to restore etc and each person would arrange a call back for the next step as couldn't stay on the line for the duration. The three call backs each stated that this shouldn't happen and the last person arranged for the item to be collected.
Ipad was collected yesterday and tonight I got an email stating that it has passed all the engineer tests and that the engineers could not find the fault I had described.
(But in my repair info that I later noticed, the advisor had put it down as a flickering flashing screen!!)
So they wouldn't find that anyway as it didn't flicker or flash!!
So anyway the same ipad is on it's way back. :(
Think I'll take it into a Genius Bar and show them as this surely can't be right.
My concern is I f it has continuos use with the colours distorting underneath then this may cause damage in the long run!
    It's my third iPad mini.
(First two were returned and replaced due to yellow screen issues) and they weren't like this.
If you do a five finger pinch to shrink or enlarge you get a large ripple of colour .
I don't see how this can be normal.
It's as though the glass has been put to close to the LCD during assemble!
Friends and family I've seen and spoke to ( for a total of 7 iPads ranging from ipad 2, ipad 4, iPad Air and original iPad mini) none of them have seen or had this issue!!

  • What causes popping noise when I touch iPad 4 screen?

I notice that intermittently, my iPad 4 screen makes a popping sound or like an electric snap sound. What causes this?

You mean a sound different than the normal 'click'?  And only in certain areas of the screen?  What areas?  And are the areas the same regardless of what function you're using onthe phone, regardless of what app you're using?
This seems like it coud be a hardware issue with the display.  Try the following steps.
    Restart the device. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430
Reset the device. (Same article as above.)
Restore from backup. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1766 (If you don't have a backup, make one now, then skip to the next step.)
Restore as new device. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4137  For this step, do not re-download ANYTHING, and do not sign into your Apple ID.
Test the issue after each step.  If the last one does not resolve the issue, it is likely a hardware problem.

  • Macbook pro screen flicker

I have a mid 2010 macbook pro that after about 10-20 minutes of use the screen backlight will start to dim out and have no brightness control then comes imeditly back on still with no brightness control and will go bright and dim repetedly.  but when the computer is doing this you can shut the screen and open it back up and it is back to normal for about 10-20 more minutes.  sounds to me like it is a software issue because the computer is running 10.6.3,  what do you guys think this could be.  is it something major or minor because the keyboard backlight works fine.  thanks for the help

Mid-2010 15" MacBook Pros - the bad NVIDIA GPU
If you're having frequent kernel panics with your 15" mid-2010, or intermittent screen problems, the problem is, more than likely, the faulty NVIDIA GPU found in a number of those machines.
Here's just a sample of a kernel panic log that points to the faulty NVIDIA card:
    Kernel Extensions in backtrace (with dependencies):         com.apple.GeForce(6.4.0)@0x82ac4000->0x82b7afff            dependency: com.apple.NVDAResman(6.4.0)@0x834a0000            dependency: com.apple.iokit.IONDRVSupport(2.2.1)@0x82fd3000            dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily(2.6.5)@0x7a802000            dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOGraphicsFamily(2.2.1)@0x8301b000         com.apple.nvidia.nv50hal(6.4.0)@0x83c05000->0x84019fff            dependency: com.apple.NVDAResman(6.4.0)@0x834a0000         com.apple.NVDAResman(6.4.0)@0x834a0000->0x8378dfff            dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily(2.6.5)@0x7a802000            dependency: com.apple.iokit.IONDRVSupport(2.2.1)@0x82fd3000            dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOGraphicsFamily(2.2.1)@0x8301b000
Here's the "official" Apple take on the issue - but the very real kernel panics need not be preceeded by 'Intermittent black screen or loss of video'... in fact, you might not experience any video problems at all.
So what can you do? Print out a copy of your kernel panic and a copy of the Knowledge Base article and take them, along with your machine, to your local Apple Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. They should be more than willing to install a new logic board at no cost. I have no idea why this faulty GPU is making the headline here on the MacBook Pro forum so often now - could it be because Mountain Lion is just bring the issue to a head more readily? I don't know - I only know that we're seeing more and more of these kernel panics of late.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • 13" MacBook Pro - Screen Flicker / Windows 7 Bootcamp

I have a 13" MackBook Pro with Retina display that I purchased last December (8 months old).  I am running Windows 7 in Bootcamp and the last few months the screen flickers on occasion (becoming more frequent).  I launched the Mac OS to ensure I have the latest updates and I believe I do (nothing new to install within the Mac OS).  Majority of the time I'm hooked up to an external monitor / lid is closed, but obviously that is a challenge when traveling.
I did do some searches and see other posts around screen flicker issues, but those appear to be on the Mac OS side.  What is odd about my scenario is that it only seems to appear on the Windows 7 side.  I can't seem to find a fix for this / really would hate to have to reload the machine.

Running Windows 7 Ultimate x64 on my brand new 15" MBP right now.
The only problem I'm having is the USB controller issue that is reported in the following thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2411685&start=30&tstart=0
I ran the Boot Camp assistant, made the partition, rebooted with my 7 DVD, formatted the partition, performed a clean installation, & then installed the drivers from the OSX DVD when Windows booted the first time.
Replaced the NVIDIA drivers with the latest Verde release. 258.96notebook_winvista_win7_64bit_internationalwhql.exe
Everything seems to be running just fine at this point.

  • Macbook Pro 13 Early 2011 ocasional screen flicker...

I bought a MBP 13 early 2011 i5 new about 2 weeks ago. Over the last week or so I get an occasional screen flicker. I lasts about a second and that is it. I had a MBP 13 2010 for a year before this one and never experienced this problem with that one. I am running Lion and all the software is up to date. I guess I am wondering if anyone else with this model has experienced this, is normal, or should it be something I should be concerned about. Thanks in advance for any answers on this. Also not related to heating either, temp is running the 40's, and just web browsing.

Call Apple Care.   You have 14 days from the date of purchase to return your computer with no questions asked.  Otherwise, you have the standard 1 year warranty and 3 years if you purchased Apple Care.
Take FULL advantage of your warranty.  Posting on a message board should be done as a last resort and if you are out of warranty or Apple Care has expired.
