IPad 2/iPhone 3GS Personal Hotspot - Rogers - Canada

I have an iPhone 3 GS on the Rogers network with a 6 GB data plan. I just bout a 64 GB 3G iPad. I didn't really understand the "personal hotspot" technology when I bought my iPad last week and have since read up.
Speaking to Rogers, if I want to share my data plan, I can do so for $30.00/month and get 1GB of data from my phone plan. This seems to be a bit of a waste. The only other option is to buy a separate data plan for the iPad, but 250 mb is too little and 500 mb is only offered on a one year plan.
So I read about the personal hotspot option and set it up for a test via Blue Tooth (the only option available for iPhone 3GS). What I found was a perfect solution for accessing the internet with my iPad via Blue Tooth. the connection is fast enough to stream video from Netflix without any stuttering or freezing.
My question is: How will enabling Bluetooth and Personal Hotspot affect battery life on both devices? Also, I'm thinking that I could have done without the 3G model as I can always get access via my iPhone.

The speed would be about the same from seeing usage of both with speedtest.net to test the speed that is Bluetooth and wifi out. The only real difference is that the wifi is easier cause all it takes is connecting to the network rather than pairing devices but wifi out eats battery life. Bluetooth while still a battery killer compared to nothing on at all is nowhere as bad as wifi. As for speed compared to direct 3G on iPad I can't really say cause everyone that I know that has a iPad has wifi either cause they all tether through their phone. But from the speeds that are seen on speedtest on phone compared to iPad I'd say that the difference in speed if any is that great. I get about 1.5-2.5 Mbs down on phone and identical speeds on iPad when tethered. This is with att in us so I don't know what Rogers speeds are but I would suggest getting speedtest app if you want to find if there is a difference.

  • Can't get new macbook air to connect to iPhone 3gs personal hotspot

I set up Personal Hotspot to connect my old MacBook Air to my ATT iPhone 3GS with no problem. (The 3GS connects via Bluetooth.)
Then I updated to the new MacBook Air, and now I'm out of luck. The phone and the MBA complete Bluetooth pairing, but that's as far as it goes--they can't connect beyond that. The iPhone never appears under the Bluetooth icon in the MBA's menu bar. Restarting does not cure it. If I touch "MacBook Air" under Bluetooth settings in the iPhone, I tries to connect but then asks me to make sure the MBA is within range. (It's a foot away.)
    Anybody?
    Thanks!

I had the weirdest thing happen. I've seen that link for the Bluetooth troubleshooting all over the forums, but could not for the life of me get my iPhone 3GS to share its Internet connection with my 2011 MBA. USB worked great, but no love for Bluetooth.
Deleted the pairing 5, 6 times, rebooted both phone and MBA several times, even deleted the Bluetooth preferences files.
In desperation, I tried pairing the phone with my 2006 iMac, and was able to get an Internet connection going. And lo and behold, the MBA pairing started to work too.
Sorry, I have no solution here, since I don't actually know what I did to make it work (if anything!) but that's what happened for me.

  • Iphone 3gs personal hotspot

How do I use the personal hotspot?

For the 3GS, your only options are Bluetooth and USB tethering.  Wi-Fi tethering (personal hotspot) requires an iPhone 4 or later.  See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3574

  • Hello Please show me how I connect my IPad to IPhone 3GS through Personal Hotspot as wifi modem?

    Hello,
I recently tried to turn on my IPhone 3GS Personal Hotspot to use as a wifi modem for my IPad2 to browse web outside of my home as I normally use Internet wifi modem at home, but the IPhone 3GS does not show up the Network Name and Password and my IPad does not show up the network name in wifi section. Please show me if you know how to set up the Network and Password (Security). Thank you

I don't understand how to fix this and I don't seem to understand where the problem is coming from.

Let's try the simple approach first. Restart your router. Any change?

  • Can no longer connect iPad Mini 2 to iPhone 6 Personal Hotspot (iOS 8.1.2 on both)

I can no longer connect my iPad Mini 2 w/ iOS 8.1.2 to connect to my iPhone 6 (iOS 8.1.2, Verizon Wireless) running Personal Hotspot. The iPad displays the error "Remote Hotspot Failure - Unable to start personal hotspot "iPhone.  However, my Windows 8.1 laptop connects to the iPhone just fine. The iPad connection problem occurs with or without the Windows laptop connected or even turned on.
Both the iPhone and iPad have Bluetooth and WiFi on, and the iPhone has Hotspot active. The iPad shows the iPhone Personal Hotspot on the WiFi Settings page, but throws the error each time i attempt to connect. Additionally, the iPhone shows 1 Connection on Personal Hotspot even though I have no devices connected. I have reset my network settings twice on both the iPhone and iPad.
BTW - I used to be able to connect the iPad to the Hotspot prior to updating to iOS 8.1.2 on both devices.

Forgetting the hotspot on the iPad sent me in the right direction. I now have it working correctly, and seem to have diagnosed the cause.
The cause seems to be that I had connected the iPad to the Hotspot via Bluetooth. Once I figured out how to delete that link, I was finally able to connect to the Hotspot. Here is what I had to do:
    On the iPhone:
    - Turn on WiFi and Bluetooth
    - Turn on Personal Hotspot and change the Hotspot password (this may not have been necessary, but things are now working)
    On the iPad:
    Reset all network settings:
Settings -> General -> Reset (at bottom of page) -> Reset Network Settings (deletes all known networks and their passwords and restarts the iPad)
Turn on WiFi and Bluetooth (I had found that Bluetooth must be on is necessary in some other research)
DO NOT CONNECT TO THE PERSONAL HOTSPOT USING BLUETOOTH - DON'T GO THERE!
Connect to the Hotspot using WiFi
    Settings ->WiFi
    - Wait until you see "iPhone" under PERSONAL HOTSPOTS (or maybe CHOOSE A NETWORK)
    - Select "iPhone"
    - Enter the (new) password that you set on for the PERSONAL HOTSPOT on the iPhone
You should now be connected via WiFi
Bottom line: Unless you have some VERY compelling reason to connect to the Hotspot via Bluetooth, NEVER do it. WiFi speed is multiples that of Bluetooth. With WiFi using Broadband Speedtest over Verizon LTE - 2 bars/dots - I am consistently getting between 15 and 20 Mb download and 3-15 Mb upload. With Bluteooth using the same test, I was getting about 1 Mb maximum upload and download.
I hope this solves the problem for all reading this thread. And thank you ManSinha for the helpful clue.

  • Able to connect ipad 2 to iphone 4s personal hotspot via bluetooth or wifi, but no internet access when connected via wifi.

I am able to connect my ipad 2 to an iphone 4s personal hotspot via bluetooth or wifi.  The problem is that I only have internet access with a bluetooth connection. Both are running ios 6.1.2 and I have tried to reset both to factory settings. Any suggestions would be reatly appreciated.

Please don't shout!   Using all uppercase means shouting on the internet.  If your keyboard is stuck please say so, otherwise people will think you are being obnoxious.
Now the first question is, when you are saying connecting to personal hotspot, have you always been using the iPhone to connect to the internet?   Are you someplace where the only place to connect is available via tethering to the iPhone's celluar network?  Or do you have other options?

  • IPad 3 wifi using iphone 4 personal hotspot?

Can the iPad 3 use an iPhone 4 personal hotspot?

I have recently bought the new iPad and can use my 4s personal hotspot function in 3G only areas without a problem. Glad I didn't go for the more expensive iPad,it works perfectly.

  • IPhone 4S Personal HotSpot not appearing in MacBook Pro or iPad2

I've been struggling for a long time detecting my iPhone 4S Personal Hotspot on my MacBook Pro and my iPad2.  Apple support has not been able to resolve the issue.  Sometimes the iPhone would show up; most of the time, not.
Recently, after learning that Siri cannot read Messages to me when I have a passcode in effect, it occurred to me that maybe the Personal Hotspot doesn't show when the phone is locked and/or passcode protected.  I've been doing some testing and I think I've demonstrated to myself that this is true.
Each time I want to connect my MacBook or my iPad to the hotspot, I find I have to slide the lock to open the phone before either piece of equipment will detect it and connect.  I also notice that it takes a long time before the hotspot appears.
With previous smartphones, the hotspot appeared quickly and was always easy to detect as long as it was enabled.
Has anyone else had the same experiences?

I've since resolved this problem - at least so I can cope with it without too much hassle.
You said your phone is unlocked.  Do you have a passcode enabled?
In my experience and testing (Apple support has been useless on this problem), I've narrowed it down to making sure the phone is unlocked and passcode disabled.  Either feature alone will block the WiFi hotspot.  [By the way, I've also learned that Siri is blocked from reading text messages, etc. when the passcode is in effect - even if you are using a Bluetooth device that is already paired with the phone.  Obviously, you must be the owner of the phone if you've pair your device to it.]
I went to my local Apple store on a Genius support visit.  I demonstrated how enabling either feature blocks my iPad's ability to detect the hotspot, and disabling both allows my iPad to see the hotspot.  The guy just said he had never seen that before, and that they are always learning new things.  He didn't do anything to elevate the case to higher level support, like Apple engineering.  I just left the store and that was it.
I've explained this to Apple support more than once and they never seem to be aware of it.  I'm supposed to call to speak with a management level guy, but I haven't remembered to make the call.
So, I walk around with an unsecured phone all the time so I can conveniently access my WiFi hotspot.  And I have to make sure the phone it unlocked until the connection is established so my computer or iPad will find it.  Otherwise, all I can see is everyone else's equipment.
Maybe people don't use the hotspot much.  Apple doesn't seem to care.

  • Can I use AT'T ipad1 with iphone 4s personal hotspot?

It seems too good to be true.  Can we use my husband's original AT&T ipad, wifi and 3g, with his iphone 4s personal hotspot?  thanks,

Thanks deggie.  I know this is redundant but. . . If there is not wifi available then he will not be able to use his ipad to be oninternet-only when wifi available, right? All of our other devices are Verizon so his ipad 1 from AT&T is costing us an extra $25month.  May be time to get a new one.  Thanks.

  • Using Iphone As Personal Hotspot

Hi, I have an Australian Iphone and an ipad from australia, and as soon as I put an o2 sim card in my iphone the "personal hotspot" setting has disapeared from the settings menu.

Sounds to me that your O2 sim card doesn't allow you to use it as "personal hotspot"...
yes carriers can do that. You should contact your carrier about this.
