Ipad 2 not detected in recovery mode on my ASUS Windows 7 laptop

I have had this issue on all my idevices since I got this laptop, so this isn't directly associated with the new update.
I can sync my idevices with itunes on my laptop without any issues, but every time I try to install an iOS update, when it get to the stage where it is "preparing to restore your device" or some such, the laptop installs a new device driver and then itunes just spins awhile until it finally spits out error 1601 and then the device is stuck on the screen where it prompts you to connect to itunes.
At this point itunes on my laptop will not detect the device.  I can see it listed in my device manager and it claims the usb driver is working correctly, however it no longer makes the beeping sound when I plug or unplug the cable, though it does disappear and reappear in device manager, which indicates it recognizes ipad plugged in, but not in the same way.
I have tried all the advice on the apple website re: unintalling reinstalling itunes an all it's components, disabling antivrus, firewall and non essential services, removing usb devices etc to no avail.
If I take my device over to my parents 32 bit vista desktop it recognizes it, installs the driver and itunes recognizes an ipad in recovery mode and I was able to restore the software and update to the new iOS on that desktop, then had to bring it back to my laptop to restore the software from my last backup.
My first question is....when the new ios is being installed is it putting the device into recovery mode as part of the process or is it going into recovery mode because the process errors out?  If it's the former, then my assumption is that the whole issue is that for some reason something on my laptop is stopping itunes from being able to recognize my ipad while in recovery mode.  If the later, then ?
My second question is....is the problem the driver, the usb port or something else unique to the laptop?  I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the driver, but if i let winows detect it after uninstalling it can't find a driver and i get the exclamation point.  If i try to manually install per the apple instructions, it tells me that the driver file is not compatiable with my device.  So either windows is somehow installing the wrong driver while device is in recovery or the comp isn't detecting what type of device it is properly or ?
I'm hoping maybe i can get the next os update over the cloud and this will become a non-issue, but having to go borrow a pc to update this thing gets really old as the laptop is my only computer, so any ideas would be appreciated.
Laptop is an ASUS ROG - not sure the exact model running 64 bit Windows 7  It has two usb ports and i have the same issue on either one.
The PC i successfully updated my device on is an older Dell running a 32 bit version of Vista

Hopefully this will help you.  Try placing your iPad in recovery mode again.  You may have to try this a few times.

  • TM - External Disk Drive Not Detected in Recovery Mode

    Hello Apple Lovers,
I am using the My Passport for Mac 500GB disk drive with time machine on my MacBook Air to create data backups.
I checked the disk for any corruption using Disk Utility. No issues were found. I find the disk works excellantly in terms of creating backups and restoring them inside time machine.
I cannot detect my external disk for restoring entire images of the OSx in recovery mode. For some reason, TM will not detect my backup disk in the recovery mode. I use the WD Security software on my disk to lock it, however, never before has the security lock posed any problem to me. I used to see a prompt appear for me to unlock the drive in recovery mode on attempting to access the TM backups.
Please take your time in replying to my post. I recovered my entire system last week and restored all the data using TM's twlight view. No rush! I successfully created a backup of my fresh OSx Mavericks on the MacBook Air with all the data restored using TM. I only wanted to troubleshoot this issue in case something occurs in the future that may require me to restore data using TM in recovery mode.
I browsed extensively through many of the discussions covering Time Machine. None mentioned my particular dilemma. Any assistance would be a valuable controbution not only to me, but other Apple users who may purchase My Passport for Mac drives and encounter a similiar problem.

You will need to avoid using third party software if you hope to access the disk and data in recovery mode.
If the WD software encrypts your data recovery mode will need a way to decrypt it. Recovery mode is a 'reduced mode' that only runs Apple software (not third party software) so the WD drivers that decrypt the disk will not be installed & Disk Utility or Migration Assistant will not be able to open the data on the disk.
There have been long threads that make me steer clear of using ANY Western Digital drive software with 10.9.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5475136?start=0&tstart=0
https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6202 <- WD had to remove software from Macs because it ruined peoples data on 10.9.
There are other threads on WD disk tools causing errors on 10.9, external hard disks do not require the use of additional software on OS X - these apps & drivers are mostly junk that is not a good idea to install.
If you really want to protect your data with encryption the features are already built in to OS X, it's called Filevault. It will encrypt your internal HD & your Time Machine backups (when the OS is encrypted). It works with Apple tools & doesn't rely on any third party drivers.
You will need to disable the 'WD security lock' and make sure the disk works without the WD software if you hope to have any chance of reading it in recovery mode.

To narrow down the issue, you can also change up your hardware:
    Use another USB cable.
Plug your cable into a different USB port on your computer.
Try a different dock connector (or no dock).
Add (or remove) a USB hub between your device and computer.
Connect your computer directly to your Internet source, with no routers, hubs, or switches.

  • My iPad is stuck in recovery mode, and wont stay turned off in order to use redsnow.

Alright so my iPad is stuck in recovery mode. I did some research and arrived at redsnow to fix the problem. In order to use redsnow's recovery fix option I have to power down my iPad. When I hold the sleep button though, no "slide to power off" appears, the screen just goes black then reboots into recovery mode 3 or 4 seconds later. Restarting it via holding the sleep and home buttons doesn't do anything. How do I get it to stay powered down? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I believe I may have used the wrong terminology. My iPad screen looks identical to the picture shown in the link, which is what I reffered to as Recovery Mode. I was looking for a way to return to normal functionality, without having to restore my iPad. I have never backed up this iPad and would prefer not to lose any information on it. If this is impossible then I will just restore it and carry on.
My main issue with restoring it is that I don't want to lose the pictures on it. If the restore doesn't erase the pictures, then I apologize for wasting your time and will be restoring it immediatly. However if I will lose the pictures than I'd prefer any other method of exiting this screen.
