IPad 2, restore & setup as new, then restore from backup?

Confused yet? I am!
So here we go, yes, I'm new to the forum, I've had my iPad 2 since Oct. 2011. And No, this problem isn't in my head.
Last week, I finally updated to iOS 5.1.1, and I deeply regret doing so. I had NO issue before the update, and now, my battery is garbage.
I used to be able to go 2 - 3 days before having to charge and that's with an average of 4 hours a day. Now, after just a few hours (5) I have to charge and it takes forever. I've been working with Apple, but they having given me an option I'm happy with.
1) Mail my unit back to them to switch out with a refurb. I am against this option as I like my unit. I didn't originally buy a refurb and I should have to accept one now. The screen on my unit is perfect, no bleed or dead pixels. I've taken immaculate care of mine and I'm afraid I'll get a unit I'm not happy with. Plus, it will be running iOS 6, which I'm not ready for.
Option two is...and this needs to be done whether I return my unit or not, is a restore and setup as new. Which means I would loose all my information buried deep within my apps. This would also install iOS 6 on my unit.
My question is this...
If I do a Restore, Setup as new, can I then go back in and do a restore from back up, to put all my stuff back in its place.
I'd love to hear from anyone that has any insight, suggestions, experience, or comments about this.
How did you handle it?
What was the outcome?
Did you involve Apple in the resolution?
Or,
Is it just not worth dealing with and I should just keep using it until it won't take a charge.
I know there have been a million posts about this, and I've read a lot of them, but I just haven't found a solution yet.
And before anyone states the obvious, ALL locations are off, all email accounts are set to manual, there are no notifications set.
In the past week, I've done 3 reset all settings, drained battery until system shut down, and did an uninterrupted full charge.
I've reset network settings. I make sure apps are closed by double tapping Home button, and done a hard reset by holding power button and home button until apple icon appears. I'm at a loss, and don't know what else to do.

First, make sure you are using the most current version of iTunes 11.1.3 (8).  Second, what version of iOS 7 was your old phone running, i.e. 7.0, 7.0.1, 7.0.2? If your back-up was made with a version of iOS that is newer than the version on your new phone, it will not sync. For example, if your back-up was of a phone running iOS 7.0.4, and your new phone was running 7.0.2 out of the box, the back up will not sync to the new phone until it is updated to iOS 7.0.4.

My question is about the 'Restore Backup' option on iTunes (Not 'Restore iPhone'). So, if I click on Back Up Now, then 'Restore Backup', would that go through the process of erasing everything on my phone as new then restore whatever iTunes has backed up?
I do not want this to happen, as with previous experience iTunes doesn't restore a mirror of what the iPhone was when it was backed up as is the case with iCloud backups.
What I am trying to do is, as I've found a method on Youtube, there is an application where I can delete all the multimedia saved in my 'iMessages' so clear up some space. As doing that manually through the phone would take a lifetime. The method is to backup on iTunes, then using the backup created, importing that into the application then deleting the messages through that then restoring the phone using that amended backup.
So back to my question, would restoring through 'Restore Backup' just restore the backup internally or would it flush the entire phone and then restore the backup? And if it does so, what would be lost in the restore?
    Thank you all,
    Fahmid

iCloud should overwrite your phone with the data stored in your account, preserving your newer data.  However, to be sure I would go to Settings>iCloud and turn data syncing to Off before restoring the backup.  Then, after restoring the backup, turn the data syncing back to on, and when prompted about Merging with iCloud, choose Don't Merge.  This will ensure that the data in your iCloud account overwrites the data on your phone (which is your goal).
Also, you don't sync text messages with iCloud so you will end up losing your more recent messages when they are overwritten by the backup.

I just did a restore to my new iPhone 6 from iTunes and now my phone will not turn on at all. How do I get it to re-start?

    Hi denise mfrompalatine,
If your iPhone won't turn on, try the steps in the resource below:

  • Took a back up in iTunes then restored factory settings and then restored back but photos and songs missing

took a back up in iTunes then restored factory settings and then restored back but photos and songs missing

How did the photos get onto the iPad ? If they were synced from a computer then they aren't included in the backup - the restore would look for them in the directory that they were synced from.
And for the songs (and the contents of the Videos app and any iTunes downloads) they are also not included in the backup, the restore would look to copy them back from your computer's iTunes library. Do you have them in your iTunes library, or can you copy them into your library (File > Add To Library) so that you can sync them back ?

  • My itunes files were deleted. I was able to use an old back up file to restore some but new downloaded purchases from iTunes for the past 5 months weren't in the back up. How do I get those back since I've paid for them one before and use the same account

My itunes files were deleted. I was able to use an old back up file to restore some but new downloaded purchases from iTunes for the past 5 months weren't in the back up. How do I get those back since I've paid for them one before? Can you redownload? If so, how?? Please help as I'm missing over 500 previously paid for and downloaded iTunes song purchases.

This was EXACTLY what I needed about the purchases I made from my device. However, is there a way to re-download other ones you've made from a computer? Because I realized some of them were not just purchased from my device.
This is a picture of what it looks like now:
    http://tinypic.com/r/107quxu/7
As you can see, the stuff circled in red doesn't give me an option to download from Cloud Beta because it already says "downloaded".
any way to get around that?

  • Inability to restore apps to new iphone 5s from encrypted backup

Hi, thanks for any advice. I recently upgraded to iphone 5s following significant slowown of iphone 4 which until the ios 7 update was a perfectly usable device. I am now simply unable to fully restore a brand new iphone 5s from a full encrypted iphone 4 backup using itunes. I have followed to letter the instructions on apple's website.
The restore process runs through but only restores text messages, contacts and photos. None of the over 20 other apps are showing up on the new iphone 5s. Perhaps I am misreading what itunes can backup and restore. I would appretiate any suggestions. Thanks.

Can you access other apps? Can you acess the internet? Can you access applications that use internet besides facebook?
If answer is yes to all of these; contact Facebook.

  • Setup as new or restore??? Photo query

I have used my ipad for nearly a year without connecting to my computer or iTunes. I'm terrified if I click on SETUP AS NEW IPAD that my large number of photos will be deleted. Even worse is the only other choice of a RESTORE FROM THIS BACKUP (from my iPhone!!!). Yikes......please advise. Thx

Try setting it up as a new iPhone, don't load your email account, and see how the drainage is.

  • Connected a new 2nd phone to my laptop and when asked to setup as new or restore, I chose to restore. Now thinking I should have setup as new. How do I change this?

I connected a new 2nd iphone to my laptop. When asked to setup as new or to restore from backup, I chose restore because I thought it would load all of the apps and their relevant data faster. Now I'm wondering if I shouldn't have done that. My 1st phone is my work phone and now my 2nd phone (personal) has my work Exchange information loaded in it and they are both syncing my personal phone number it seems. Maybe I should have set it up as new? How do I change that?

If you don't transfer the backup for your other iPhone or leave it as is, you must set up and transfer everything manually after restoring your new iPhone as a new iPhone or not from the backup.

  • Setup as new or restore iphone to fix battery?

my iphone 4 was having battery issues, I thought it was because the phone was old
I upgraded to a 5 and the battery is lasting me about 4 hours
I restored from a backup, is this why?
If I setup as new anyway to backup?

Try setting it up as a new iPhone, don't load your email account, and see how the drainage is.

  • New iPad mini: set up as new or restore from iPhone 5 back-up?

If I want to set-up my iPad mini with the same settings and content from my iPhone 5, do I use Restore or do I set the iPad mini up as a new iPad?
Thanks so much for any help you can offer.

I have about 2 days to bring it back to BestBuy but I just found out the 4G version of the mini is not yet available so I guess I'll just get the full size with the faster chip instead.

  • Can't restore to my new Touch 5G from 3G backup

So I have a 3g touch backed up today. Running 5.1 or whatevert the most current I can run on it is.
Got my new 5G touch and keep trying to restore onto it but not working.
I plugin the new 5G and it asks me to restore, goes through the process and says to leave it connected to the mac and it will appear in itunes after it restarts.
However it never appears in itunes and never restarts. Just shuts down and stays that way.
If I unplug it and plug it back in and or hold the button down and force it to restart enough times, it will eventually bootup. Seems to have some of my settings, email settings Icloud settings etc. But none of my apps are there never restored any of my data really jsut some settings.
When I connect it to itunes again it acts like its a new ipod and wont let me sync apps or data just asks me if I want to restore again.
If I restore again it just repeats this process.
    Imac - 2.16 Ghz core 2
    3 Gig ram
    10.7.4
    Itunes 10.7 (21)

All my stuff is in my library as normal. The issue is that after the restore the ipod doesn't reboot and then show up in itunes and sync my stuff.
It restores, says it will reboot but never does. I have to unplug it and reboot a bunch of times by hand to get it to start again. Eventually it boots up and has my settings but none of my data. I plug it into the mac agian and it just starts over as if its a new ipod and asks if I want to restore.
At no point does it attempt to sync my data.
Just got done applying 10.7.5 we'll see if that helps at all. Doubtful at this point.

  • 9i Database - Restore to a new host, validating RMAN backup

    Hi all,
I could use your help, for any of you who remember how to do this in 9i. On one of my production databases, running 9.2.0.6.0, I have a nightly RMAN script that writes the backup to a large shared drive (this is on a Windows 2003 server). This backup uses a recovery catalog.
I have a test server, and I want to try and restore last night's backup on this test server, without touching the recovery catalog - purely as a means to go through the recovery process, and to validate our backups (this is also for SOX compliance, as this database is for the financial system).
I have been looking through the 9i documentation, and was hoping to have some detailed steps here: http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B10501_01/server.920/a96566/rcmrecov.htm#1007514
but I don't see a lot of information there.
I believe that this should be a rather simple process. On the test server, I have installed the 9.2.0.6 software, and created the Oracle Service using the same name as production. The test server can also see the shared drive that houses the backup files from the production system.
Here are the steps I am trying, please let me know what I need to change. Thanks all!!
    rman target / nocatalog
    RMAN> set DBID 3679803977

Many thanks for the helpful replies so far, Hemant!! I had to shelve this issue for a few days, back at it today.
I have made some progress, I am able to restore the control file now - what I am doing, is copying the autobackup controlfile from the network drive over onto the server locally (E:\oracle\ora92\database\BACKUPCONTROL.ORA), then I am able to restore the controlfile with this:
    restore controlfile from 'E:\oracle\ora92\database\BACKUPCONTROL.ORA';
And I can see that it restores all 3 of my controlfiles.
The next step would be to do the database restore. When I issue the "restore database;" command, I can see that it lists out all of the datafiles that it needs to restore from the backup set, but then after about a minute, I see these error messages pop up:
    RMAN-00571: ===========================================================

    OSD-04026: Invalid parameter passed.
When I looked up those last 2 error codes on Metalink, I see document ID 213858.1 that looks like this normally happens when the backup piece that has Read-Only permissions. I have confirmed that the backup files on the network drive are not Read-Only, I have full Read/Write privileges on them. So once again, I am stumped.
Any thoughts? I might go ahead and log an SR for this, to try and get it resolved.
    Thanks!

  • My iPad 2 can't load new Yahoo emails from my home WiFi (but loads them fine in other WiFi environments and loads Gmail messages fines at home)

My iPad 2 had no problems loading e-mails until about a month ago. Then it started periodically being unable to load new e-mails from one of my two Yahoo accounts (the primary one), but the secondary Yahoo account worked fine. (It says "Checking for mail..." and never stops checking). This only happens when I'm at home, using my home WiFi (a slow connection.) Now, for the past two weeks, about 95% of the time, neither of my Yahoo accounts works on the iPad, although I have no problem accessing these accounts on my iPod Touches or on my desktop Mac mini. If I take the iPad to my neighbor's house and use her WiFi, I can get the Yahoo mail. (She has cable/internet through Comcast; I have DSL.) I can access the Yahoo mail in public WiFi environments like Starbucks, Barnes & Noble, and the Apple store. I upgraded the operating system to ios 6.0.1, and the problem didn't go away. I've been to two Apple stores and seen two different "Geniuses" about this. The first one observed that although the iPad could load mail while in the store, it was doing so very, very slowly. She did a complete restore (erasing all of my apps, photos, etc.) but when I got back home, the problem resumed. The second Genius couldn't figure the problem out, either. He suggested I contact Yahoo, which I highly doubt will get me anywhere. I eventually added back all of my old apps, but then deleted them again in the past few days thinking that perhaps a persnickety app was causing a problem. No luck.

Answering my own question here. It's fixed! Another user recommended I switch to another wireless network then back to mine. And it worked! Mail is sending again with no problem.

  • Did I need to setup as new or use a backup

I bought a 3Gs today, because my original iphone started acting strangley. When I got home, I wanted to get my contacts onto my new phone. When it asked if I wanted to setup as new or use my last backup, I chose my last backup. Did I make a mistake doing that? I had been so hesitant about getting the new one since I had gone through four problem phones at and right after the release. I hope I didn't mess something up. It seems to have a good screen although you can see the warm tone difference but not as bad as the others I had tried. Can anyone tell me if I have messed things up by using my last backup instead of new?

You can do whichever you like.
    Is your iphone working properly?
    If so, stop worrying.

  • ITunes only gives me the option of setting up as a new phone, or from backup?

    Hi guys,
I'm having an issue with my new iPhone 6 Plus and connecting it to iTunes.
To cut a long story short;  I received a brand new, sim free iPhone 6 Plus for Christmas, upgrading from my old 4s.  I backed up the 4s to iTunes on my PC (not iCloud) before resetting the phone ready for sale.  When I came to setup the new 6 Plus on Christmas day, I connected it to my iTunes and instructed it to setup the phone from the backup from the 4s, but unfortunately I received an error message stating that the backup file was corrupt (I've no idea why), and so it could not complete the setup.
I ended up setting the phone up as a new phone, although I did this on the phone itself, and not through iTunes, and re-entered the contacts and re-installed all apps manually.
I didn't think much else about it, as I'd now got the phone exactly as I wanted it.  I've just tried to connect the phone to my iTunes on my PC.. it recognises the phone, but only gives my two options;  one is to set the phone up as a new phone, the other is to set it up from a backup.  Well I don't actually want to do either of those as I've already set the phone up manually, and so I was just wondering if anyone could please tell me what I should do next, so that I can get iTunes to bypass the setup phase?
I basically just want to make a backup of my new 6 Plus with its current apps and contacts and all will be fine.
Any advice would be very much appreciated
    Thank you

Choose backup. The device will restore your backup from iTunes or iCloud and the phone will have the same settings as the old phone
