Ipad 2 runs poorly with iOS 8

after upgrading to IOS 8 my iPad 2  has multiple problems, among them: slow running. frequent crashes. freezing, and more.  Is there any fix for this?

I regained control of my iPad 2 last night after having endured weeks of extreme slowness with iOS 8!!!  Unfortunately it involves restoring it from scratch.  I personally restored it from the DFU mode (see link) but am not sure if the DFU mode is absolutely necessary.  I ended up restoring when the iPad 2 finally got stuck with the Apple logo while restarting.  So I think the extreme slowness is just a symptom of more serious corruption of the device that will eventually cause it to fail restarting.  I personally had a 5 day old backup in iTunes so the device was restored to an almost identical state.  But if you have an up to date backup there shouldn't be any noticeable differences in content after the restore.  The entire process does take a long time, but it is well worth it seeing that my iPad 2 is almost as fast as the day I got it!!!
So in summary:
- connect iPad to iTunes and make a full backup
- restart iPad in DFU mode
- iTunes will tell you that it detected an iPad which needs a full restore to factory settings and update
- iTunes will download iOS 8.1 (as of this date), then will restart your iPad and proceed with the wipe and reinstall
- after iOS/firmware reinstallation, iTunes will restart the iPad again and will tell you to leave it connected so it can restore from the backup
- the iPad will successfully restart at which point you can swipe to unlock; it will tell you that it was restored and offers you to set a locking passcode again
- at the same tim iTunes will give a list of backups to restore from - select your last iPad backup
- after a while depending on the amount of stuff that you had the restore will complete and you will be happy again!!

  • My iPad still runs poorly on iOS 8.0.2

My iPad 2 with wifi + AT&T data was severely impaired by iIO 8, and later iOS 8.0.2. I have communicated my problems directly to Apple tech support, visited with the genius bar on two occasions and followed the forums carefully. I have tried everything suggested on the forums, including wiping the iPad completely and setting up as a new iPad. It still runs poorly, has cut-and-paste issues, jerky scrolling, dropping AT&T data every time I close out, etc. Does anyone who IS NOT Philly_Phan or Star Traveler HONESTLY have a solution that works?

It started after the major update to iOS 7.
I can't believe that this is so hard to do. It's just not letting me. I can add a bookmark to the home screen just fine, just not in a bookmarks folder anywhere I try.
I've used Apple products since 2001 and have always loved how intuitive they are. But the Safari browser since iOS 7 has been the worst I've experienced. At least right in the beginning after that update.
I'd really appreciate any help that doesn't just tell me how it's suppose to work...I know that.
My iPad 4 is not affected with the problem and works as it should.

What's so funny was that... I want to recover or transfer my recent backups (previous downloads) to my iPad am running iOS6 from iOS 5.1.1...HELP? I tried to copy frommy backup folder to iTunes folder nothing works.. now now it keeps on Downloading the same stuff.. which i repeatedly deleted.. (ARRGH!!)

Downgrading of any version of iOS isn't supported by Apple. If you search the web, you'll find instructions that may work, but you're on your own should any problems arise. For many people it goes without problems, but for some it's reportedly bricked their devices.
iOS 6 works fine on my iPads, though Maps is definitely a work in progress. There are a number of alternative maps apps, or you can just save Google's mobile maps web page to your home screen. For performance or stability problems with iOS, try doing a Restore of your iPad. That fixes for many people a number of problems that upgrading over an existing version of iOS sometimes seems to trigger.
You're not talking with Apple when you post here, by the way.
    Regards.

Please help. At work we have netgear and tplink. Since I updated my mini iPad and iPhone 4S with ios 7wifi drops all the time.  What is the problem?

Try this  - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.) No data/files will be erased. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430
    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are drooping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.
Some Wi-Fi losses may stem from a problematic interaction between Wi-Fi and cellular data connections. Numerous users have found that turning off Cellular Data in Settings gets their Wi-Fi working again.
You may have many apps open which can possibly cause the slowdown and possibly the loss of wifi. In iOS 4-6 double tap your Home button & at the bottom of the screen you will see the icons of all open apps. Close those you are not using by pressing on an icon until all icons wiggle - then tap the minus sign. For iOS 7 users, there’s an easy way to see which apps are open in order to close them. By double-tapping the home button on your iPhone or iPad, the new multitasking feature in iOS 7 shows full page previews of all your open apps. Simply scroll horizontally to see all your apps, and close the apps with a simple flick towards the top of the screen.

No available eq setting is acceptable.
Right now, I feel like driving a nail through it.

Me again. I cleaned out the headphone jack with a q-tip soaked with rubbing alcohol. Most of the q-tip fibre was removed to be able to insert it into the jack. After pushing and turning fairly vigorously for a half minute, I pulled it out and a large piece of pocket lint came out with it as well. The Ipod now sounds excellent.

  • Garbage collection & memory management causing app to run poorly on iOS 7

Sorry I post the same question but in the wrong forum (I posted it in the Flash Player Beta Channel).
Hi, I am currently working on a game built using Air SDK v. 3.8 that is running fine on iOS 6. However, since the release of iOS, sometime it becomes unresponsive. When profiling with Adobe Scout, the problem seems to have something to do with the garbage collection. In Scout, some GC pass could take up to few seconds on iOS 7, while it would never take more than 700 ms on iOS 6.
I've tried to compile the project using the new 3.9 beta, and the result is somewhere in between what we've got on iOS 6 and iOS 7 (1-2 seconds).
I'm wondering if this is something that you are aware of, and if there's a fix (or optimisation) around the corner. Thanks a lot.

    I am also seeing this.
Here are screenshots of Scout profiling the same sequence in my game on iPad 2 iOS 7 vs iPad 2 iOS 6.   The initial burst of activity is a loading sequence, followed by automated gameplay.
iOS 7: Please note the position of the red line on the graph, and the time associated with garbage collection.
    iOS 6:
Ignoring the "loading sequence" section, the "vertical line" garbage collection spikes on the iOS 7 screen shot are on the order of 2-5 seconds (garbage collection time) each.  The biggest spikes in the iOS 6 screen shot are all < 50 ms in comparison (again, note the position of the red line on the graph).
Earlier in the day I captured a few garbage collection spikes on iOS 7 that were > 10 seconds each, with the largest being a whopping 24 seconds.
Any insights, supporting evidence, or alternative theories are appreciated.
UPDATE: I tested an iPad3 iOS7 today and did not experience this behavior.
UPDATE: I tested with another iPad2 iOS7 and did see the behavior on that device as well.

  • My iPad was never updated with iOS 5, now I no longer have a pc.

I was lazy and went a year without updating, my ipad was doing everything i needed it to with pre ios 5 version, my pc has since fried and my iPad is in much need of an update. Wha do I do to move forward?

In order to update the iOS you will have to use a computer. The highest version of iOS that the original iPad will update to is iOS 5.1.1. If you have an iPad 2 you will update to iOS 7. Any more recent iPad will already have had iOS 5 or later.

  • IPad 1 activation issue with iOS 5.1 update - any fixes?

Tried to update my iPad 1 over WiFi to iOS 5.1 this morning.  I get a message:
"iPad could not be activated because activation servier is termporarily unavailable.  Try connecting your iPad to iTunes to activate it, or try again in a couple minutes"
No luck - I've tried all day.  When connecting direclty to may iMac, I get an iTunes message stating that it cannot recognize the contents of the iPad and suggests a full factory restore (which I want to avoid unless no other option is available).  iTunes does recognize that the iPad has OS 5.1 installed, however.  I've tried a few tricks I've seen posted (such as changing the DNS #), but nothing works to "activate" it.   I don't ever recall needing to "activate" an iPad with the previous updates - only after initial purchase.
If anyone has the same problem, and has found a fix, I'd appreciate the help.  Thanks.

Thanks - I hadn't tried that earlier (had only tried the red slider shutdown).   The problem, however, still persists (states activation server is termporarily unavailable).
After two days of not being able to use the iPad, I"m about to break down and try restoring to factory conditions......  I hope that works.

  • Will I be able to make my iPad 1 pc free with iOS 5

I use Wi Fi and iTunes on my husbands computer right now. I am thinking it's only going to be possible for new iPad 2s because Apple has said "pc free out of the box". Anyone have any info on this? Thanks!

It will apply to all iPad's once iOS 5 is installed on them : http://www.apple.com/ios/ios5/features.html#pcfree . It says 'out of the box' as they will start to ship with iOS 5 pre-installed, but for existing iPad's you will need to connect to your computer's iTunes and update to iOS 5 before it then becomes 'pc free'

  • Ipad unresponsive since updating with IOS 8

Since I updated my iPad with the latest software last week, I have had several problems:
    1. It  doesn't always connect automatically to my broadband network at home
    2. My Message icon shows 1 message bu when I try to access messages, the page is blank and I have difficulty getting rid of the screen.  It won't allow me to use my fingers to close the app.  I have to keep clicking the button (at the bottom of the screen) and eventually it closes down.
    3. My Safari is very slow and when I do a search on SafarI I am not always able to click through on the links.  I have to try several options down the page before I can get it to work
    4. Facebook is very slow
Generally nothing runs smoothly. I really wish I had left thinags as they were and not updated my iPad as I am getting increasingly frustrated.  Even whilst typing this post, the words don't always appear immediately on the screen.  I've noticed a number of complaints about the IOS 8 update but a lot are related to the iPhone. I have a notification of a software update available on my iPad to help fix bugs, but this relates to iPhones!!! Please, please could you let me know what I can do to improve things. I have the iPad model which preceded the iPad Air and have a memory of 64 gb.

    You should not.
Having said that, backup is a good thing just in case the unforeseen happens.

  • IPad 2 VPN access with iOS 7.1

I updated one of my iPads to iOS 7.1. The upgrade went smoothly but now when I connect to a VPN service (strongvpn) the performance is terrible and I can no longer stream videos through the VPN. My other iPad which I have not updated yet continues to work fine with the VPN as does my iPhone 4s which has also been updated to 7.1. I have used the ookla speed test and get about a 40Mb/s download speed when not connected to the VPN this drops to under 1Mb/s when I run the test after I connect to the VPN . The other iPad and iPhone get about 12Mb/s download speed via the VPN.
I have tried turning off other features like cellular data, Bluetooth etc but nothing changes. I even went so far as to completely reset the iPad and start from scratch but whatever I try I cannot get any improvement in the download speed when connected through the VPN so streaming video is impossible.
I have been in contact with Strongvpn but they have no idea what is going on. All my other devices continue to perform well - just this iPad since it was updated.
Has anyone else who uses Strongvprn successfully updated their iPad 2 without issue?
Thanks in advance for any tips or feedback

Just got an android tablet for less than $250. Less powerful processor, but what would you know? Runs VPN and the same streaming apps perfectly for some strange reason. Can AirPlay to my Apple TV and use it as a remote for the Apple TV. Internet works faster than my iPad 4 too. I wasn't going to wait months for an update/fix with not new functionality and only minor aesthetic differences (plus iOS in the car!).
Hasn't crashed once in 2 days. Haven't been able to say that about my iPad in nearly 6 months.
    Good luck guys!
2 mac book airs, 2 iPhones, 2 apple TVs, 2 iPads, Mac, TimeCapsule and bunch of crappy cables that break every six months. Let's see how the software updates go for those.

  • IPad 2 wi-fi with iOS maps turn by turn?

I have iPad 2 wi-fi. If I buy a gps receiver such as the Dual XGPS150a, will I be able to use turn by turn navigation with Apple iOS 6 maps, or will i need to buy an app such as Navigon with preloaded maps?
I guess my 2 questions are:
    1) Do I need data access as well as GPS to use Apple Maps in iOS 6, or do I just need GPS?
    2) Is the Maps software different for wi-fi only iPads vs. those with cellular capability? i.e. if I was connected to wifi and had a bluetooth GPS receiver, could I even then use the Maps software on iPad 2 wi-fi?
I guess I could use my phone as a wireless hotspot and buy a gps receiver to use my iPad for GPS, but if that's the case, I could just use my phone....
I'm just curious of the capability.  Thanks!

I have a dual GPS receiver that I frequently use with my iOS devices.  Unfortunately, the Maps application on my WiFi iPad doesn't have any of the GPS functionality, even when the Dual GPS is paired.  It seems that Apple chose not to include the functionality, as I am able to use my external GPS with the maps turn-by-turn navigation on my iPhone without issue.
    This is very disappointing
