IPad 2 wi-fi with iOS maps turn by turn?

I have iPad 2 wi-fi. If I buy a gps receiver such as the Dual XGPS150a, will I be able to use turn by turn navigation with Apple iOS 6 maps, or will i need to buy an app such as Navigon with preloaded maps?
I guess my 2 questions are:
1) Do I need data access as well as GPS to use Apple Maps in iOS 6, or do I just need GPS?
2) Is the Maps software different for wi-fi only iPads vs. those with cellular capability? i.e. if I was connected to wifi and had a bluetooth GPS receiver, could I even then use the Maps software on iPad 2 wi-fi?
I guess I could use my phone as a wireless hotspot and buy a gps receiver to use my iPad for GPS, but if that's the case, I could just use my phone....
I'm just curious of the capability.  Thanks!

I have a dual GPS receiver that I frequently use with my iOS devices.  Unfortunately, the Maps application on my WiFi iPad doesn't have any of the GPS functionality, even when the Dual GPS is paired.  It seems that Apple chose not to include the functionality, as I am able to use my external GPS with the maps turn-by-turn navigation on my iPhone without issue.
This is very disappointing

Please help. At work we have netgear and tplink. Since I updated my mini iPad and iPhone 4S with ios 7wifi drops all the time.  What is the problem?

Try this  - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.) No data/files will be erased. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430
    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are drooping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.
Some Wi-Fi losses may stem from a problematic interaction between Wi-Fi and cellular data connections. Numerous users have found that turning off Cellular Data in Settings gets their Wi-Fi working again.
You may have many apps open which can possibly cause the slowdown and possibly the loss of wifi. In iOS 4-6 double tap your Home button & at the bottom of the screen you will see the icons of all open apps. Close those you are not using by pressing on an icon until all icons wiggle - then tap the minus sign. For iOS 7 users, there’s an easy way to see which apps are open in order to close them. By double-tapping the home button on your iPhone or iPad, the new multitasking feature in iOS 7 shows full page previews of all your open apps. Simply scroll horizontally to see all your apps, and close the apps with a simple flick towards the top of the screen.

  • My iPad was never updated with iOS 5, now I no longer have a pc.

I was lazy and went a year without updating, my ipad was doing everything i needed it to with pre ios 5 version, my pc has since fried and my iPad is in much need of an update. Wha do I do to move forward?

In order to update the iOS you will have to use a computer. The highest version of iOS that the original iPad will update to is iOS 5.1.1. If you have an iPad 2 you will update to iOS 7. Any more recent iPad will already have had iOS 5 or later.

  • IPad 1 activation issue with iOS 5.1 update - any fixes?

Tried to update my iPad 1 over WiFi to iOS 5.1 this morning.  I get a message:
"iPad could not be activated because activation servier is termporarily unavailable.  Try connecting your iPad to iTunes to activate it, or try again in a couple minutes"
No luck - I've tried all day.  When connecting direclty to may iMac, I get an iTunes message stating that it cannot recognize the contents of the iPad and suggests a full factory restore (which I want to avoid unless no other option is available).  iTunes does recognize that the iPad has OS 5.1 installed, however.  I've tried a few tricks I've seen posted (such as changing the DNS #), but nothing works to "activate" it.   I don't ever recall needing to "activate" an iPad with the previous updates - only after initial purchase.
If anyone has the same problem, and has found a fix, I'd appreciate the help.  Thanks.

Thanks - I hadn't tried that earlier (had only tried the red slider shutdown).   The problem, however, still persists (states activation server is termporarily unavailable).
After two days of not being able to use the iPad, I"m about to break down and try restoring to factory conditions......  I hope that works.

  • Ipad 2 runs poorly with iOS 8

after upgrading to IOS 8 my iPad 2  has multiple problems, among them: slow running. frequent crashes. freezing, and more.  Is there any fix for this?

I regained control of my iPad 2 last night after having endured weeks of extreme slowness with iOS 8!!!  Unfortunately it involves restoring it from scratch.  I personally restored it from the DFU mode (see link) but am not sure if the DFU mode is absolutely necessary.  I ended up restoring when the iPad 2 finally got stuck with the Apple logo while restarting.  So I think the extreme slowness is just a symptom of more serious corruption of the device that will eventually cause it to fail restarting.  I personally had a 5 day old backup in iTunes so the device was restored to an almost identical state.  But if you have an up to date backup there shouldn't be any noticeable differences in content after the restore.  The entire process does take a long time, but it is well worth it seeing that my iPad 2 is almost as fast as the day I got it!!!
    So in summary:
    - connect iPad to iTunes and make a full backup
    - restart iPad in DFU mode
    - iTunes will tell you that it detected an iPad which needs a full restore to factory settings and update
    - iTunes will download iOS 8.1 (as of this date), then will restart your iPad and proceed with the wipe and reinstall
    - after iOS/firmware reinstallation, iTunes will restart the iPad again and will tell you to leave it connected so it can restore from the backup
    - the iPad will successfully restart at which point you can swipe to unlock; it will tell you that it was restored and offers you to set a locking passcode again
    - at the same tim iTunes will give a list of backups to restore from - select your last iPad backup
    - after a while depending on the amount of stuff that you had the restore will complete and you will be happy again!!

  • Will I be able to make my iPad 1 pc free with iOS 5

I use Wi Fi and iTunes on my husbands computer right now. I am thinking it's only going to be possible for new iPad 2s because Apple has said "pc free out of the box". Anyone have any info on this? Thanks!

It will apply to all iPad's once iOS 5 is installed on them : http://www.apple.com/ios/ios5/features.html#pcfree . It says 'out of the box' as they will start to ship with iOS 5 pre-installed, but for existing iPad's you will need to connect to your computer's iTunes and update to iOS 5 before it then becomes 'pc free'

  • IPad 3 drops 4G with iOS 5.1.1

Ever since updating g to iOS 5.1.1, my iPad3 has been dropping the 4G connection.  The 4G symbol  disappears from the upper left part of the screen and I lose Internet connectivity.  It seems to do this most after being off and changing location, but can also do it when moving.  I have to turn the cell data off and then back on to get it back.  Anyone else having this issue with 5.1.1?

I have the new update also on my iPad 3 however I am not having the problem you describe other than occasionally it will drop back to 3G depending on the location I am at and the coverage. As the 4G Network expands this will also stop also. However, I have a question for those of you who are having the problem. Who is your Internet service provider? Is it AT&T?  I have Verizon and have zero problems.  My daughter has AT&T and she is having problems such as you describe and hire dropped call rate on her phone is terrible. Their network coverage is so narrowly defined around the interstate highway system that as soon as she gets any distance away she starts dropping calls.

  • IPad 2 VPN access with iOS 7.1

I updated one of my iPads to iOS 7.1. The upgrade went smoothly but now when I connect to a VPN service (strongvpn) the performance is terrible and I can no longer stream videos through the VPN. My other iPad which I have not updated yet continues to work fine with the VPN as does my iPhone 4s which has also been updated to 7.1. I have used the ookla speed test and get about a 40Mb/s download speed when not connected to the VPN this drops to under 1Mb/s when I run the test after I connect to the VPN . The other iPad and iPhone get about 12Mb/s download speed via the VPN.
I have tried turning off other features like cellular data, Bluetooth etc but nothing changes. I even went so far as to completely reset the iPad and start from scratch but whatever I try I cannot get any improvement in the download speed when connected through the VPN so streaming video is impossible.
I have been in contact with Strongvpn but they have no idea what is going on. All my other devices continue to perform well - just this iPad since it was updated.
Has anyone else who uses Strongvprn successfully updated their iPad 2 without issue?
Thanks in advance for any tips or feedback

Just got an android tablet for less than $250. Less powerful processor, but what would you know? Runs VPN and the same streaming apps perfectly for some strange reason. Can AirPlay to my Apple TV and use it as a remote for the Apple TV. Internet works faster than my iPad 4 too. I wasn't going to wait months for an update/fix with not new functionality and only minor aesthetic differences (plus iOS in the car!).
Hasn't crashed once in 2 days. Haven't been able to say that about my iPad in nearly 6 months.
    Good luck guys!

  • IPad bluescreen problem even with iOS 8.0.2

My iPad goes to bluescreen for a second and restarts. This happens randomly twice or thrice a day since my iOS 8 updation even it continues in 8.0.2. I Guess this is due to death bug !! So kindly fix it up at next update release atleast.

I have the same thing happening with my ipad air... I can't even get it to turn on anymore. It flashes to the blue screen, then crashes off completely. Then it restarts itself with the apple screen, then crashes, apple screen crash... it's terrible. Everything was fine and dandy until the iOS 8 update though. I just hope that they get a new update out soon!!!!

  • Ipad 3 hotspot broken with iOS 8

i updated my iPhone and iPad to iOS 8 and now the personal hotspot (provided by my account with t-mobile) doesn't work and the noted option for the continuity hotspot is also not working. the basic symptom seems to be an inability to maintain a bluetooth connection between the iPad and the iPhone 5s.
    ipad model number mc707ll/a
    os version 8.0(12a365)

According to the support at the Genius Bar, the new operating system requires more power than previous IOS versions. Models prior to 4/s are not powerful for the requirements. If you have backed up  while you still had IOS 7 on your computer, you should sync everything (NOT BACK UP!) and then restore from your desk/laptop/cloud account. If not, Apple has ceased to sign IOS 7, so you are stuck, at least until the discontent of millions of owners of previous devices reaches Apple, so they find a fix. Right now they not seem to be inclined.
Some people (probably with model 4) report being able to resolve the problem by resetting the system. (in Settings). If you have 8.0 you  might try 8.01 which according to CNET fixes the bugs in 8.0, which was a Bets, anyway,. 8.02 is now available, and if you, like me, are suffering through the new system, you might hope that if fixes new buts.
I find that I am able to  use my stronger home and office wi-fi, but wi-fi breaks at hot spots, which have weaker systems.
Beyond that the only things IPad 3 and below owners can do is make a mighty noise. I don't know where, but I'd be surprised if reporters somewhere wouldn't love a story that apple broke their older models with an insinuation that this was a nefarious plot to increase sales of new ones. (Probably  not the case, but remember that your intent is to get Apple to act in your favor, and remember how fast they reacted when Apple maps got all that bad press? Badaboom.

  • IPad 2 no sound with IOS 8.2 I've tried a reset. Any ideas? Very frustrating

SSince updating to IOS 8.1.2 I have no sound though the speakers on my IPAD 2. I've tried to reset and turned on and off seversl times. Headphones work. Any suggestions?

    Hello there, Adrianlwickham.
When having issues with sound from the speaker of your iOS device, the following Knowledge Base article offers up some great recommendations for troubleshooting:
If you hear no sound or distorted sound from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch speaker - Apple Support
Follow these steps and test the sound after each one.
Go to Settings > Sounds and drag the Ringer And Alerts slider to turn the volume up.
If you can hear sound from the speaker, then the speaker works. Continue with these steps to find the setting or switch that's affecting the sound. If you can't hear sound from the speaker, contact Apple Support.
Make sure the Ring/Silent switch is set to ring. If you can see orange, it's set to silent.
    Restart your device.
Open an app that has music or sound effects. Adjust the volume with the volume buttons or the slider in Control Center.
Go to Settings > Bluetooth and turn off Bluetooth.
If there's still no sound, connect a headset. If you can hear sound through the headset, remove it and clear any dust or debris from the headset jack of your device.
If the device is in a case, make sure that the case doesn't block the speaker.
Use a brush to gently clear any debris from the speaker and Lightning connector (or 30-pin dock connector). The brush should be clean and dry and have soft bristles.
Update your device to the latest version of iOS.
If you followed these steps and still hear no sound or distorted sound, contact Apple Support.
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    Pedro.

  • AirPlay won't display on my ipad 2 or 4 with IOS 8.1

I have many iPad 2 and iPad 4s in our district.  I have an Apple TV with software version 7.0.1(6912) which tells me its up to date.  When I swipe up on an iPad to display AirPlay, it doesn't show.  However, i do have 1 iPad that still has IOS 7.0.4(11B554a) that will connect to the Apple TV via AirPlay and Mirror.  I also can connect an iPhone 6 to the Apple TV and Mirror to it.  They are all on the same network subnet, the only difference seems to be the IOS version.  Anybody else have this same issue?

As per the Apple iCloud status page, they are having issues. Do not make changes at your end.

  • Ipad unresponsive since updating with IOS 8

Since I updated my iPad with the latest software last week, I have had several problems:
    1. It  doesn't always connect automatically to my broadband network at home
    2. My Message icon shows 1 message bu when I try to access messages, the page is blank and I have difficulty getting rid of the screen.  It won't allow me to use my fingers to close the app.  I have to keep clicking the button (at the bottom of the screen) and eventually it closes down.
    3. My Safari is very slow and when I do a search on SafarI I am not always able to click through on the links.  I have to try several options down the page before I can get it to work
    4. Facebook is very slow
Generally nothing runs smoothly. I really wish I had left thinags as they were and not updated my iPad as I am getting increasingly frustrated.  Even whilst typing this post, the words don't always appear immediately on the screen.  I've noticed a number of complaints about the IOS 8 update but a lot are related to the iPhone. I have a notification of a software update available on my iPad to help fix bugs, but this relates to iPhones!!! Please, please could you let me know what I can do to improve things. I have the iPad model which preceded the iPad Air and have a memory of 64 gb.

    You should not.
Having said that, backup is a good thing just in case the unforeseen happens.
