Downgrading to a previous version of iOS is not supported. You have to delete the corrupt back-up so iTunes can at least back-up the current data on the iPhone and then restore it. Search these forums, there a several good posts on how to delete the corrupt back-up.

If you tried to restore the old version I assume that your iPad was jailbroken. If my assumption is incorrect, please forgive me for jumping to conclusions. If it wasn't jailbroke, maybe this will help.

I am getting an error message when trying to update my iphone to the latest software version.  The error message says "This device is not eligible for the requested build"

Can you get a Wi-Fi connection on your iPhone?
I got an Internet connection on my phone, went to SETTINGS --> GENERAL --> SOFTWARE UPDATE and updated my Software wirelessly (no iTunes involved).
When I connected my phone to my Computer again and iTunes popped up, it showed that my iPhone software was up to date. Then I could restore to an old back-up.

  • This iPod, iPhone, or iPad could not be restored. this device isn't eligible for the requested build.

This fixed my problem. For the last year I could not update after iOS 4 was released, restore or restore from a back up on my iMac model from mid 2007 with intel. The only way around this problem was to use my old HP laptop to use my Apple products. After several phone calls to Apple support, nobody at Apple could figure this out. I was told I would have to pay Apple for the support because my iMac was not under warranty. I have searched the web on and off to try several different solutions and all except this one have failed. If others have found this, I must have missed it in the forums. I am only posting this to help anyone that has had this issue.

Downgrading the iOS is not supported. Also if you have iOS 5 beta then I assume that you are a registered developer, in which case you should be posting in the confidential developer forums : https://devforums.apple.com/index.jspa
