IPad 2 Won't Rotate

My ipad 3. (16g Wifi White) has recently stopped rotating the display when you turn the device.
It's stuck upside down (home button at top in portrait).
I have checked that rotate is not locked.
The switch (set to rotate not mute) works, and I get the onscreen confirmation of lock and unlock..
I have tried a full reboot many times (holding power and home till apple logo).
Interestingly, on reboot orientation is correct, then unlock keypad appears upside down.
Checked in a few apps and no rotation.
Also tried with Smart Cover off.
Downloaded two apps that give gyro and accel sensor output (Gyroscope and Lirum Info), an both indicate sensors are detecting the rotating action, but the screen never changes from upside down portrait.
Anyone have solution or same issue?
Is this an IOS bug?

Try restoring.

  • TS3274 My screen on my ipad won't rotate

My screen won't rotate it is only sideways and won't turn horizontal

Is there a lock symbol at the top of the screen next to the battery indicator ? If there is, then depending on what you've got Settings > General > Use Side Switch To set to (rotation lock or mute notifications), then you can lock/unlock the rotation by the switch on the right hand side of the iPad above the volume switch, or
iOS 7 : via control centre : swipe up from the bottom edge of the screen and it's the right-most of the 5 icons in the middle of it (if the icon is white then it's 'on', tap it to turn it grey and 'off').
iOS 6 and below : via the taskbar : double-click the home button; slide from the left; and it's the icon far left; press home again to exit the taskbar.
The function that isn't on the side switch is set via the taskbar instead : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4085
If there isn't a lock symbol then try a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • Out of blue - iPad won't rotate

All of a sudden yesterday my iPad stopped auto-rotating.  I've tried several fixes. 1. Verified multiple times through both methods (side switch and double click home swipe) that the rotate lock was/is off.  2. Reboot (press and hold power and home buttons).  3. As a last resort prior to asking for help here, I did a full factory reset.  My iPad now has nothing other than the iOS on it and it still will not rotate.
Purchased brand new in May 2012.
Any other suggestions?  Try throwing it against the wall?  Anyone? Bueller? Bueller? Bueller?
Thanks in advance for any help.

  • My iPad Won't Rotate after updating to iOS 6.

After updating to iOS 6, my iPad2 won't auto rotate. I already checked if the rotation was locked, so this isn't the case. I tried restarting it and rebooting it. The only possible way to rotate the screen is to turn off the iPad, rotate the iPad, then turn on the iPad again. Please help me, I don't know how to fix this problem.

I had same problem post upgrade to iOS 6.1.3
    I went to
      [Setting] [General] and set the
[Use_Side_Switch_To] option from [Rotation ...]  to [Mute]
Checked switch by manually flipping the button on iPad cover (next to volume) back and forth and seeing images of mute actions appear sceen centre
But on checking further not all apps rotated automatically  ... so ...
Manually closed all open apps by:
Screen button x2 in quick succession bottom bar appears with all active apps
Touch and hold on of these apps in this bar untill the x appears on them and the wobble
Close each one down by touching x
    Then
      Rebooted ( ... just like a Microsoft machine :-)
Now all working working ... boy you really miss that feature when its not functioning ...
Dont know if all steps relevant but this is what worked for me ...
    ... best of luck

  • IPad won't rotate. Lock is off both on switch and settings. Reset with no joy.

Need help with rotate on iPad II

For future reference, you might wish to keep in mind that the rotation lock control and system sound control are really confusing.  Originally, the side switch was used for rotation lock control (and a soft switch for system sounds) but IOS-3 changed the switch so that it controlled system sounds in order to keep consistency among IOS devices (a soft switch controlled rotation lock).  Then, for IOS-4, Apple made a serious mistake in attempting to pacify some whiners that actually claimed that they turned auto-rotate on and off fifty times/day and consequently the side switch is mandatory.  The result is real disaster.
The following is a C&P from a post made by Demo.  It's a better explanation that I can come up with.
System sounds can be muted and controlled two different ways. The screen lock rotation can be controlled in the same manner as well.
Settings>General>Use Side Switch to: Mute System sounds. If this option is selected, the switch on the side of the iPad above the volume rocker will mute system sounds.
If you choose Lock Screen Rotation, then the switch locks the screen. If the screen is locked, you will see a lock icon in the upper right corner next to the battery indicator gauge.
If you have the side switch set to lock screen rotation then the system sound control is in the task bar. Double tap the home button and in the task bar at the bottom, swipe all the way to the right. The speaker icon is all the way to the left. Tap on it and system sounds will return.
If you have the side switch set to mute system sounds, then the screen lock rotation can be accessed via the task bar in the same manner as described above.
This support article from Apple explains how the side switch works.

  • My iPad 4 won't rotate

My iPad won't rotate. I've already tried rebooting it, resetting all settings, and backing up my iPad and it still won't rotate. My lock rotation is not on. It is an iPad 4 and it is ios7.2.1 it has been happening for about a week now. Please help!

You probably have the screen locked in that way if you double click the home button fast you slide over once to the left. Your left. Then in the circle with an arrow it might have a lock icon if so then tap it if not then i am not sure how to fix this.

  • My iPad Can't rotate

My ipad won't rotate even though i unmark my lok rotation. Why?

pjl means the volume up and down button, a.k.a. the volume rocker. Below that is the switch he is talking about. Undo typing appears if you shake the iPad while a keyboard is displayed.
For more on rotation lock, see here:

  • My iPad mini screen won't rotate

Why my ipad min screen won't rotate.

If you see a lock icon in the upper right corner of the screen - then the screen orientation is locked.
Try the side switch above the volume rocker first and see if that unlocks the screen. If that doesn't do it, swipe up from the bottom to get to the control center. Look for the lock icon in the row of icons at the top. It will be the last one on the right. Check that to see if the screen is locked.
If the screen is unlocked but still will not rotate, reset the iPad.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the button

  • IPad screen won't rotate

I have an iPad 2, out of warranty, that won't rotate (one of 150 iPads that are nearing the end of their usage cycle and will be sold at the end of the school year). It is stuck in landscape mode and won't rotate to portrait mode. In an attempt to fix it, I've tried everything short of opening it up: I've done a hard reset, I've done a system restore, and I even ran the battery clear down until nothing would come on the screen when the power button was pushed. Nothing has made any difference. (And no, the screen rotation is not locked, and no, the side switch is set to Mute, not Lock Rotation.)
It makes me think the internal gyroscope is not functioning. Now here's where it gets interesting. I have downloaded the free Gyroscope app, on this and several other iPads for comparison. I can report two significant findings on the iPad that won't rotate properly: (1) All 3 axes of rotation on the gyroscope respond properly; and (2) the numbers on the defective iPad do not agree with the numbers on the other iPads. I.e., sitting side-by-side on a flat, level desk top, a "good" iPad reports Yaw: -173 degrees, Pitch: 0 degrees, and Roll: -1 degrees; while the defective iPad reports Yaw: 3 degrees, Pitch: 16 degrees, and Roll: -32 degrees. That leads me to believe that the gyroscope (or accelerometer) needs to be calibrated. However, I'm not aware of any facility for doing that. And furthermore, it's not clear that this has any bearing on the fact that it won't rotate.
So... any ideas or suggestions? I am not averse to opening the device up, if there is a replaceable part. I haven't been able to find any info about such a task. My only other options are, as far as I know: Send it to Apple for replacement at $249, or sell it at a discount since it is not fully functional. Thanks in advance for any useful ideas. - JR

Then you are not the usual user.
If you can disassemble the iPad 2 then you may be able to replace the small custom circuit board containing the gyroscope and accelerometer chips (if you can source the part).
