Ipad 3 AVCHD files

Does anybody know how to import AVCHD files direct  into an ipad 3 using the camera connection kit without having to download and convert in a Mac first? Motion Jpeg and jpegs are fine but I much prefer the quality of AVCHD, any suggestions very welcome!

You will need to at least "remux" them as long as these files are not interlaced. In most cases (except, again, for interlaced footage), full, time-consuming and quality-degrading reencoding isn't necessary.
Please read, for example, http://www.iphonelife.com/blog/87/review-video-converter-ivi-pro-ipads-iphones for more info on remuxing.

  • Avchd files directly to iPad

I travel with a sony a35 camera and would like to transfer avchd files directly to the iPad.

I went crazy too after I bought iMac specifically for editing HD video... These are my suggestions:
    - Import movies directly from a camera or archive. When you have SD card full, copy all contents to hard drive to make an archive.
    - Convert existing .mts files to something recognizable to iMovie
If you do upper mentioned points, iMovie will edit your movies. If your camera shoots in interlaced format, you will loose the vertical resolution (= your videos will not be smooth). I hate this. So my finals solutions are 2:
    1. Install Ubuntu in Parallels or Virtualbox and use Kdenlive software. Great software...
    2. Install Windows in Parallels or Virtualbox and use Sony Vegas.
Both solutions will edit .mts directly in interlaced format and you can export to anything. I like to export to
fullHD interlaced format and then to SD quality (for DVD), still in interlaced format. This makes great results.
I hope it helps. I needed half a year to figure everything out.

  • Why won't premiere CS6 play audio for imported AVCHD files on my window 7 laptop?

After I've imported the AVCHD file the video plays just fine, but the audio isn't there at all. I still have the original video files on my SD card, I've tried Wondershare to convert the file, but the video became corrupted. Any tips?
    Thanks!

Not necessarily, go to Help > Updates. We're on Premiere Pro CS6 (6.0.3) in Windows now.

Uninstall Spotify and see if that helps. I've heard about some crazy things related to that app. Better to run all these apps on a cheap secondary computer or iPad.

  • Adobe Photoshop Elements Organizer Stops Working due to Sony AVCHD files

Hello I installed Adobe Photoshop elements and have been having trouble with it crashing.
To solve this problem I deleted my Catalog and added a Catalog with only one folder.
This folder has photos, in JPEG and Sony .ARW format as well as AVCHD files.
I found that by removiing the AVCHD files from the catalog the SW would no longer crash.
This really is not a practical solution since my PC has many folders with many AVC files.
I am trying to see if there is a SW patch or another way to address this issue.
    Thanks,

It might work but this is not a practical solution.
I have many picture folders on my pc and several of these have AVC files.
My intention was to use Photo Shop Essentials to edit my pictures. Unfortunately the "Organizer" app crashes when trying to work with my Catalog.
I have narrowed it down to only happening when there are AVC files in my folders. I have seen others have this issue and I found the issue by what they recommended.
Sadly if I am unable to get this to work with my current folders I will have to dump Essentials for another application.

  • Premiere Pro CS4 does not handle AVCHD Files well.

Loaded the master collection of CS4 when it first came out.  I had purchased CS4 for the AVCHD file format.  I had no problems using Premiere Pro until I ugraded to version 4.0.1 in March of this year then all AVCHD file selections dissappeared.  Hence, I could not create new AVCHD projects and the existing projects did not fuction properly.  I have been through a series of uninstalls (and deactivations) and reinstalls.  Reinstalls did not work.   Had to delete by renaming the C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Installers\7e74552a59eaf9fafd13f90894ac9bd to get the reinstall to work.  I have also used Windows Install Clean Up to remove all Adobe CS4 files that the windows "Add or Rmove Programs" did not remove.  When I did get the reinstall to work, Premiere Pro would work for awhile then became slow to the point the project became unusable.  Tried the all upgrades again and again the selection of AVCHD files dissappeared.  I do not need the AVCHD Intra capability.  The last uninstall I just uninstalled Premiere.  I could not reinstall Premiere until I uninstalled the entire master collection than the reinstall of just Premiere succeeded.  Premiere was totally unusuable.
Has anyone had similiar issues with Premiere Pro and AVCHD files and were you able to resolve the problem?  I am considering removing all Adobe products, including past versions and trying the reinstall again, or create another profile and install just the Adobe products, or - the last resort - reformating my hard drive and starting over again.   I would like to get Premiere Pro working again properly before reformating.
Previous versions of Adobe have worked with no problems.
    Computer profile:
    Windows XP sp3
5 hard disks each with 300 mb free

You might do a "this forum" search at http://forums.adobe.com/community/premiere/premierepro_current to check on the revert to trial problem
I have CS5 so read there, and don't REMEMBER any such complaints
You do know that CS5 is 64bit only... so you will need to get Win7 64bit... and have a 64bit motherboard?

  • Bizarre problem trying to import .MTS (AVCHD) files into PSE7 Organizer

    Hi
    b Summary of problem:
    *I recently upgraded to PSE 7 / PRE 7
*I am trying to import .MTS (AVCHD) files into the PSE7 Organizer
*I get a "...did not contain any supported file types..." error on attempted import
    b HOWEVER...
*I can edit same footage in PRE7
*This footage is automatically added to the Organizer
*I can play this footage in the PSE7 organizer but generating thumbnails takes ages
*Camera: Sony HDR SR12 producing .MTS files (full 1920x1080i HD)
    *PC: Intel Core i7 940 CPU, 6GB RAM, RADEON HD 4870 512MB
    *OS: Vista 64 bit
    b Detail:
I have recently upgraded my PRE/PSE bundle to ver 7 primarily because the new version of PRE boasts support for AVCHD.
Having installed the new software I quickly tried editing footage in PRE7 with video taken on my Sony HDR SR12 camera (footage taken in full 1920x1080i HD) and it works! Hoorah! I can now finally edit AVCHD footage in it's native format using PRE. Thank you Adobe!
But my joy was very shortlived because when I tried to import some other footage from the same batch into my PSE7 Video Catalog it wouldn't work. I got a pop up box containing the following error:
i "Nothing was imported. The file(s) or folder(s) selected to import did not contain any supported file types, or the files are already in the catalog."
Under this message is a list of the files that I tried to import. Next to each one there is a reason (it's the same reason for each clip):
i "Reason: The file is damaged or is a format that cannot be included in the Organizer."
To import files I use the following method: File / Get Photos and Videos / From Files and Folders
HOWEVER, the files that I imported directly into PRE7 in order to edit them have (surprise, surprise!) automatically been added PSE7 Organizer's Catalog. It takes a quite a while to generate a thumbnail for each clip but it does eventually do it and when it does I can play that footage in PSE7.
Just in case you're confused by this stage... If I try and manually add files to the PSE7 Organizer it doesn't work BUT if I edit that footage in PRE7 and then load the PSE7 Organizer I see the footage has been automatically added. This makes no sense whatsoever!
Am I doing something really stupid here? Why oh why will the PSE7 Organizer not import .MTS (AVCHD) files?!
NB: While searching for a solution to this problem I have, thanks to this Forum, found out about the K-Lite Codec Pack. I downloaded and installed the Basic pack v4.4.5 and now I can, at least, play my .MTS video files in Windows Media Player... I wish I had found out about that a couple of months ago because it would have saved me from buying Cyberlink PowerDVD 8!
Please someone help before I lose the plot.
    Thanks
    Patrick

    Hi
I'd just like to add an update to this post.
    b Summary:
*K-Lite Codec Pack clashes with Sony's Picture Motion Browser (PMB) software
*Analysis of video in Sony's PMB is well worth doing!
*You can Drag and Drop clips from Sony's PMB into PRE7
    b Detail:
As you've probably gathered I have now settled on using Sony's Picture Motion Browser (PMB) to Catalog all my video. Sorry Adobe to talk about someone elses product but the Adobe Organizer just can't cope with AVCHD footage no matter how you manage to import it! It's far too sluggish and my PC has an Intel Core i7 940 CPU with 6GB RAM and a 10,000 RPM HDD!
Anyway, in my first post you'll have read me raving about the K-Lite Codec Pack but sadly I've had to uninstall it because it kept on causing PMB to crash. PMB runs much smoother and quicker WITHOUT that codec pack. Something about it clashed with PMB. The once agile PMB became sluggish and unresponsive.
Having now removed the codec pack PMB is back to being agile and generaly lovely.
To view AVCHD footage outside of PMB I have reverted to using Cyberlink's PowerDVD 8 - there's always a pregnant pause between double-clicking on the clip and it playing but that's the only drawback.
If you are going to use Sony's PMB for cataloging your video collection (and I recommend you do so BUT only if you have AVCHD footage - otherwise stick to Adobe's Organiser) then I can fully recommend "Analyzing" all of your footage. This takes time and a bit of patience because it kept stopping for no apparent reason but would readily start up again (without having to do anything else) BUT once it's done it'll reward you with the following:
*Filter on any combination of Scenery, People, Smiles - e.g. with a click of a button you can isolate footage that contains smiles, etc
*Face Search - if you select some or all of the footage in the right-hand pane it will then put a small thumbnail for all of the different faces in that selected footage in the bottom "Face Search" pane. If you then click on one of those thumbnails it will jump to the clip(s) that contain that face and grey out all the other clips
*Expand Videos - This tool is brilliant! In normal viewing mode you get a thumbnail of the video whether you're in Folder view, Calender view or Detail List view. If, however, you select "Expand Videos" from the tool bar it will show you a series of frames contained within that clip. You can choose from "Highlights" or various regular intervals (5 secs, 10 sec, 30 sec, 1 min, etc). The Highlights option does a pretty good job of picking out the significant changes within the clip
Lastly, I have discovered that you can drag a clip from Sony's PMB into PRE7. It won't let you put it directly onto the Timeline but it will let you drop it into the Project file list (found under the Edit tab).
I do hope that this info has helped others like me who are trying to get to grips with editing and cataloging AVCHD footage.

  • How can I move AVCHD files from my MacBook Air to my Mac Pro?

While on the road, I will be putting my AVCHD video on my MacBook Air. This will free up space on the SD card and enable me to export clips to iWeb, etc. But when I get back to my desk, I'll want to put all of that AVCHD content onto my Mac Pro for more thorough editing and long term storage. What is the best way to move the unedited AVCHD files (events) from one computer to the other?

    Jim,
There's a few ways you can do this but here's a method thats simple which also provides you with a backup of the movies contained on your SD card.
Try creating a disk image from your SDHC card from your Cam. You'll need an SD card reader and when you connect to your MBA you can create a .dmg file from disk utility.
Once you've done that you can launch imovie and then double click on your .dmg and imovie will prompt you if you want to add the movies to your library.
When you get back home you can follow the same procedure by copying over your .dmg. No need to export from imovie on your MBA to your MP. The added benefit is that you have a complete backup of your SDHC card in the .dmg which you can backup to DVD.
    Hope this helps.

  • Can you edit AVCHD files for length & keep them AVCHD?

I shoot video on a Canon Vixia HF10 camcorder that records in AVCHD.  I usually import these files into an event in FCPX and create optimized media when doing so.  Then, when I archive the project, I delete the optimized files and just keep the AVCHD files (which makes the project archive much, much smaller).
I shot some video the other day but forgot to stop the recording at the end of about 30 minutes of footage.  This resulted in the camera recording until it filled the 32 GB card.  And I was shooting from 4 angles with 4 different cameras, so I got more than 100 GB of useless footage.
I'd like to trim the AVCHD files themselves so that I can get rid of the 3 1/2 hours of footage I shot by mistake, and make the AVCHD files much smaller.  Can I do that?  How would I do that?
The only thing I can think of is to import the entire files into FCPX, transcode them into optimized video, then trim the resulting ProRes 422 .mov files down in a timeline, and export them.  But then I think that I'd lose some quality in the process (of trimming, exporting, and reimporting them), and I'd be archiving .mov files (which I don't want to do because they are so large).
    I'd appreciate any advice.

first, AVCHD is no video 'format', but mainly a file and folder structure standard. Within that, wrapped as 'mts', you'll find h264 encoded video. which leads to ....
second, h264 is no lossless format. even plain cuts makes a re-encoding neccessary, which 'multiplies' compression errors/loss.
    imho, you have two options:
    • import wisely FCPX allows to select on AVCHD import - no need to 'swallow' the fulll 16Gs of a card, if you need just 10min here and 20sec there, import these parts. … but even 'parts' are probably bigger in file size than original recordings.-
    • if you dig deeper into your AVCHD files (cmd-click/Show Package Content), you'll notice, a single 1h recording is chopped into many mts files. you could identify the 'empty' ones, erase them, and give the free tool AVCCAM Restorer a chance to re-enact a standard compliant AVCHD-structure (=erasing some mts inside an AVCHD 'axes' the whole thing!).
Try with a test recording! Test with a copy! This is a workaround! .... no guarantee, it works.

  • How do I transfer PDF files from PC to IPAD using Itunes 12.1.2.  Previous versions let me drag file in Itunes to Ipad and files appeared under Ibook but can't get it to work in latest 12.1.2 version.

How do I transfer PDF files from PC (Windows 7) to IPAD using Itunes 12.1.2.  I would like to do files manually rather then auto synch.  Previous versions let me drag file in Itunes to Ipad and files appeared under Ibook and then I could move them to an appropriate collection title.  The interface appears to have changed in the latest ITunes version and I am not sure what the proper procedure is.

King_Penguin - Thanks it worked perfectly.  I had my pdf files copied into ITunes on my PC but when I clicked on a pdf file to copy it I thought the sidebar would appear with my IPAD name and then I would drag it over.  I didn't realize that I needed to click-and start dragging it towards the left-hand side for the sidebar to appear.  It worked like a charm - THANKYOU!!!

  • Importing video from Sony HDR-CX410 FCP 6.0.6 will not recognise AVCHD files. what is the solution?

First I have to admit I'm not technical in any way so I'm easily confused so please forgive me if my question sounds unprofessional.
The computer is a Mac desk top tower with Lion OS x 2x2.66 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon with an  internal hard drive plus a number of remote hard drives.
I'm using Final cut pro 6.0.6 to edit video.
The question is, up until now I've been using material shot on mini DV tapes, then digitised into the computer via the camera. As this format is getting long in the tooth I decided to get one of the latest DVCAM cameras, I went for the Sony HDR-CX410.
It was not until I had purchased the camera & shot a few test seq. & then tried to down load into the computer that I found out that Final cut does not recognise the AVCHD files on the SD card.I've tried importing from the camera as well as a card reader with no result.
I've looked at a number of sites including Apple support community where it looks like this is a major issue for many people but I can't find anyone who is using the same camera. I wondered if this issue is something you have covered in the magazine, if so please let me know which copy, if not can you help in any way. It appears that Final cut proX may be able to translate the AVCHD files but I'm not sure. Am I right in thinking that if I do upgrade to FCPX I will still have to convert the files, if so would you recommend a suitable software program.  Is there any reason why Apple make it so difficult to edit this AVCHD format when all the latest cameras are using it, perhaps its time to change back to a PC?

    Eric,
FCP 6.0.2 (compared to previous version) comes with the latest improvement and support for AVCHD.
    However, here is a suggestion:
In Log&Transfer (top frame) on the right of *search field* there are three buttons, click on the one showing a little arrow-down and a sort of little star. Choose preferences then in the *transcode to* section click on those two tiny arrows pointing one up and the other down and choose Apple Intermediate Codec. Can you now transfer? (Add selection to queue)
Once again 6.0.2 might provide better support for your camera.
Use the search tool for more info.
    G.
PS. Please note that some people have had problems with 6.0.2 so get us much info as you can before updating.

  • AVCHD File Structure From MAC to PC

    Hello,
I know this is sort of off topic but I need the expertise of this forum....
I am the videographer (mac user) for a speaking group and have to film speeches 5-7 minutes in length each week. The problem is how to get the videos to each person without processing on my Mac and uploading to youtube so they can see them.
I am Using a Canon HF10 and wonder if I could pop out the memory card from the camera put it in a card reader attached to a person's PC and transfer the files that way. I know that I would copy the entire file structure to their computer. I assume the PC person would have to have something that could work with the AVCHD files but I don't know what is on a PC computer these days. The other dilemma is that the speakers HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO COMPUTER skills.
Anyone have any ideas how to get the video to a viewable state without going through FCE.
    thanks,
    Al

I agree with Martin and might add that I was in a similar project late last year with several folks who certainly weren't as computer savvy as myself, and YouTube turned out to be the solution. That way I didn't have to deal with the perennial "I couldn't open it" comments you WILL receive. Everyone was able to view YouTube.
You might try uploading to Vimeo - I think you can actually upload .MTS files directly to their site, if you want to just post your raw footage. You could just get the files in the Finder directly from the file structure on the HF10, copy them to your Mac and upload from there. (I haven't tried this, but Vimeo's site says they accept .MTS files, which is what the HF10 videos will be, in the "STREAM" subfolder)
The downside is that their free account maxes out at 500MB of uploads per week. That may be enough for you but I don't know. If you pay, the limit is quite a bit higher.

  • Photoshop Elements Organizer 11 crashes due to deadlock in the thread wait chain when creating thumbnails for *.mts (AVCHD) files

    Hi,
the Elements Organizer 11 creates a deadlock in the wait chain when generating thumbnails for more than a handful of MTS (AVCHD) files.
After importing AVCHD files from my Canon video camera, the organizer using default settings always crashes. I was able to narrow down the problem to be caused by thumbnail generating.
After deactivating the automatic generation of thumbnails, the organizer does not crash any more upon launching .
Of course, working without thumbnails is not very practical. The next resort is manual trigger of thumbnail generation by selecting "update thumbnail".
If I manually trigger updating of thumbnails for files one by one, then it works for quite many files before crashing again.
Selecting thumbnail update for multiple files at once has a much higher likelihood to crash.
This does not seem to be related to particular file contents: a file that leads to crashing once may be flawlessly get a thumbnail created at the next attempt.
The Windows event report looks as follows (German language Windows):
Name der fehlerhaften Anwendung: PhotoshopElementsOrganizer.exe, Version: 11.0.0.0, Zeitstempel: 0x505e9f67

Occasionally, a different module is listed as erroneous instead of msvcrt.dll.
    My questions:
    - has anyone experienced the same problem?
    - is this a known issue with Organizer 11?
    - is the issue solved with Organizer 12?
I have Premiere Elements 11, Photoshop Elements 11 installed and not experienced any other issues with these applications.
Playback of said AVCHD (*.mts) files works flawlessly, i.e. I do not have any codec or performance issue on my PC.
Deactivation of anti-virus software has no significant effect. I have excluded video directories from scanning anyways.
Have deactivated face recognition, visual search and smart tagging in the organizer.
Have also disabled hyperthreading in the BIOS.
Using Windows XP compatibility settings for PSE somewhat improved the stability, but did not completely eliminate crashes.
Additionally, it signnificantly slows down thumbnail generation and a progress indication window becomes visible during thumbnail generation, which is barely noticable in native Win 8.1 mode.
Officially, Elements 11 is compatible with Windows 8.1.
There is a knowledgebase article related to Elements 6, which recommends to disable multi-threading and to enforce execution of Organizer on more than one core.
This reduces the problem a little bit, but thumbnailing more than a handful of files still leads to crashing.
By means of the task manager, I analyzed the wait chain of the process PhotoshopElementsOrganizer.exe:
Every time the fault occurs, it is caused by a deadlock in the wait chain.
    For example:

  • Huge HD file sizes in iMovie when importing AVCHD files from HD Camcorder

Although several answers have been given on different ways to import HD files from a AVCHD camcorder, in this case a Sony one, the issue is what to do with the HUGE files it creates. I recorded 2 hours of HD content in about 30GB on the camcorder. I can burn those native HVCHD files on DVD's, took 6 of them, and play them on a Blue Ray player in HD. To edit, I tested a sample 50MB file that was about 3 minutes in length. It convered to quicktime file in the same 1920x1080 quality resulted in a file that was about 800MB, looked great, but how do I store or play a 20 minute version of it? iMovie is inadequate to do anything other than produce smaller size files for an iPod or lower quality, unless it is going to be a very short HD movie if doing true HD quality. One of the reasons I took the MAC plunge was the better multimedia capabilities. In this case, Apple (iMove and Final Cut) is behind.
I ended up shifting my HD editing back to a PC with $100 Sony Vegas software that can edit the AVCHD files and author in it. I can produce a DVD with about 25 minutes of edited HD in AVCDH file format and play it. I can also store the finished product in a much smaller space using AVCHD files. I have a 1 TB drive on my Mac that would be consumed if I worked in iMovie with converting all these AVCDH files and kept them in HD quality since it looks like it needs to expand them 12-16 times the AVCHD file size.
Yes, I know I could lower the quality to better work with them in iMovie, but that makes no sense to me. I want to record and edit in the HD format. Seems like these AVCHD cameras are becoming a standard since they are so efficient at storing HD content, iMovie needs to figure out how to edit and store them the same way. Very disappointed in how iMovie handles HD, to me it is NOT very good at handling HD, no good way to store or distribute it.
Am I missing soomething here? I have spent hours looking for a different answer, but have not found one yet? Maybe the next version of iMovie will be better. I like using it for SD DVD authoring, but for HD, did not work at all for me.

Interesting you say it is not meant for editing, but there are about a half dozen editor's for windows that will work on these exact files. I know with Sony Vegas that I have the same level of control with frame precision as I do with iMovie so I think there must be more to the story why Apple has not been able to support it like other software manufacturers who support windows. Don't get me wrong, i would love to do the work in iMovie and not have to learn something new. I don't have the storage space to use the HD apple format, that 2 hr of HD in AVCHD would turn into about 500GB then what do I put it on to play it. If the BlueRay standard calls for 25 or 50G disc's and we can get full two hour movies on them today, then they must be using a file format similar to AVCHD to fit on a disc, they cannot be using anything close to what Apple uses for HD files, it is just simple logic and math. So why doesn't Apple finure it out before everyone who starts working in HD comes to the same conclusion that the Apple QT file formats for HD is going to be an issue with space, you can create content, but cannot afford the disc space to store it or play it.

  • How to prevent color banding in AVCHD files on import?

    Hi!
I am trying to import some 1080 60i AVCHD files from my Panasonic G3 camera into iMovie '11. Once the files are imported they show very strong color banding/pixelation, that does not show up if I play the clips on the same computer/screen directly from the SD card in Quicktime player. Here is a screenshot from of the original frame, and here is exported movie.
I am using all default setting for export to Quicktime movie (1080 HD, "Best" quality).
For import I tried so far:
    1. Import into iMovie at full quality from the SD card;
    2. rewrap AVCHD into MOV (with ClipWrap) without resampling then import
    3. convert AVCHD to Apple Intermediate codec (with Clip Wrap), then import
    No difference!
Is it even possible to avoid such banding/pixelation with iMovie or another video editor that's available for free/cheap? If yes, how is it done?
Here is a 40 Mb mts file if you want to try to test your method: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/40852067/00011.MTS
    Will appreciate any advice!
    Thank you in advance,
    Vlad

Finally found a solution to this problem:
Remove saved state for Fireworks CS6 on Mac OS X Mountain Lion
    Quit Fireworks.
In the Finder, navigate to /Users/Your User Name/Library/Saved Application State/com.macromedia.fireworks.savedState
    3 files in folder:
    data.data
    window_1.data
    windows.plist
Prefix files with 'OLD' just to be safe.
    Start Fireworks

  • Elements Organizer 10 - no audio AND no thumbnails on AVCHD files

    Hi All,
I'm running Elements Organizer 10, and am seeing some strange behavior in that, since upgrading to 10 (from 9)
    - none of my .mts files will play any sound in the Media Browser viewer and
    - new .mts files that I import into the catalog have no thumbnails
The files do have thumbnails in Windows Explorer.
I can play the files, with sound, using both VLC and Windows Media Player.
Importing the files in Organizer 9 did generate thumbnails and playback with audio.
Premiere Elements 10 does generate clip thumbnails and successfully plays audio, too.
So - it seems to be somthing very specific to version 10 and the Organizer - not machine-wide.
I noticed that playback in the Media Browser viewer invoked the Haali Media Splitter I have installed on my machine.  Thinking that might be the wrong codec, I uninstalled it.
I could still play in VLC and WMP, but double-clicking in Organizer gave an error message that no appropriate codec was installed.
So, I installed ffdshow to see if that avc codec could be used, still no luck.
Reinstalled latest version of Haali, back to same behavior (no audio, no thumbnails) in Organizer - everything else working.
So, I can work by dragging the clips from Organizer onto VLC so I can play the video with sound while tagging, but I'm concerned that it's not working and that whatever the base problem will manifest itself more seriously later.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance!!

    Hi Steve,
    Thanks for the input...
I did go back and confirm that I'm running the latest QT for my machine 7.7 (1680.34) according to the QT Player.
Just in case, I re-downloaded the QT Installer and Repaired the installation. No change in behavior in Organizer.
I don't think it's QT that is used for AVCHD files, tho, is it? I tried to play my video in the QT player, and it won't play .mts...
Also, as others suggested, I did attempt to 'activate' the AVCHD plugin - but, didn't get any new popups or dialogs (it might have happened when I originally installed and I didn't pay attention to it)...
I had previously right-clicked on a clip in organizer and selected "Edit in Premiere Elements...", put the clip on the timeline, played and scanned thru the clip, saved the Project.  But, based on yours and the other suggestions, (I did this a few times with different clips) I created a new project, Get Media from Files and Folders, loaded a clip, dragged to timeline, played/scanned, double-clicked to bring up the previewer in Element - everything works as expected.
Back to Organizer - same behavior as before.
Uninstalled Haali again, and tried all of the 'plugin activation' steps again.  No change except Organizer still complains of not having the required codec.
So - for some reason, the organizer thinks it should use the Haali Media splitter as the codec for avchd - everything else on my machine seems to be able to find a more suitable codec - vlc, wmp, pre all work fine.
Did some more surfing on the forums, and found some references to Premiere Pro using the Haali media splitter (?).
So, one other piece of info - Prior to Elements 9, I did have Premiere Pro installed on this machine.  Very nice, but overkill for what I want to do.  So, I uninstalled it prior to installing Premiere Elements 9.  Everything worked fine w/ 9, but not with 10.
So - is there some way to determine which codec Organizer is using and/or force it to use a specific one?
Is it possible (seems likely with the symptoms) that there was some configuration file or registry entry left over from Pr that is now directing Organizer to use the same codec that it previously used (instead of the default)?
Thanks all!!  Normally I'd be able to figure this out, but am pretty new to 'the inner workings' of Pre.
    Thanks,
          Scott
