IPad 3 charging issue... not your normal USB complaint.

So I took the plunge into iPad world and got the 64 gig  Verizon 4g version.  The night I got it ( Tuesday ) after playing with it for a while, I tried to plug it in overnight to charge it with the AC adapter.   It wouldn't give me the charging acknowledgment on screen in the first two wall outlets I tried, finally plugged it into a surge protector and it worked.  This being my first iPad I thought maybe it was being finicky about the power.    Faster forward to this morning, I forgot to plug it in overnight, and tried every outlet and surge protector in the house, to no avail.    I plugged it in using the same cord minus the AC adapter to my PC and got the "Not charging " Message.   ONLY after doing this was I able to get this thing to start charging using the AC adapter.
So my question is this....  Is this normal?    I really don't want to have some modified OCD dance everytime I need to charge this **** thing.
Is it the iPad itself acting up, which I suspect, or the USB to AC 10w adapter?
Again, first time owner so be gentle.

Sometime the iPad will not indicate it's charging, when using the AC adapter, for the first 15-20 minutes.
The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.
At this link http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/galaxy-tab-android-tablet,3014-11.html , tests show that the iPad 2 battery (25 watt-hours) will charge to 90% in 3 hours 1 minute. It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. If you are using your iPad while charging, it will take even longer. It's best to turn your new iPad OFF and charge over night. • PPS dynamic filter creation - not your normal thing but we need a solution, dont think Performance Point can handle it!

My challenge at the moment is that I need to create a dynamic filter. To explain this is a cascading filter but not your normal cascading filter,
    ie, Year/Month/day etc.
Here we have a single Dimension, Organisation. It contains every level of a business,
    Site,
    Dept,
    Company name,
    Division
    Holding
    Strategic Area
From these as a default we have 4 built hierarchies with a different combination of the above.
    Activity (Strategic Area, Dept)
    Organisation (company Name, site, Dept)
    Sites (Division, Site)
    Holdings(Holding, Strategic Area, site, Dept)
At any given time we have have additional Hierarchies created within the Dimension, further adding to the hierarchy list.
We now have a challenge where we require our users to be able to in the first filter select the Hierarchy they want to use, ie, Holdings, Site, Organisation
or Activity. This should then cascade to the second filter and contain the relevant hierarchy and levels as a multi select filter. Of course this also needs to be connected to number of graphs, charts and scorecards on the page, dynamically.
I have gone around the houses to get this to work but not having any luck. Tried the variety of filters available, MDX, member selection, tabular,
SharePoint, and attempted to mix and match to get this to work. I cannot find a way but I don't believe this is not possible.
If it is not possible we must look around for another front end solution for our BI Dashboards which I would prefer to avoid. Any response or suggestion
    would be much appreciated.

    Sheb

  • My Mac Mini will charge - but not sync with - USB-connected devices (ipod, camera, memory card reader). How do I fix it?

My Mac Mini will charge - but not sync with - USB-connected devices (ipod, camera, memory card reader). I have tried unplugging the devices, restarting the computer, selectively unplugging and plugging in the devices, closing and opening the relevant applications (iTunes, iPhoto, etc). I have tried using different USB cables.
It's like all of a sudden the synching service stopped functioning or recognizing these devices for some reason. The other ports work just fine (monitor).
The only USB-connected external device that appears to be unaffected is the USB SuperDrive and it works on all the USB ports into which I plug it.
    How do I fix this?

Open Console in Applications>Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens or doesn't happen.

  • TS2634 IPAD charging issue?

I have the first IPAD and all of a sudden I cannot charge my IPAD through a electrical outlet.  I can only re-charge it through my laptop.  Anyone know why and can this be fixed?

Will it charge using the iPhone charger. It's only 5W, so it will charge more slowly.
The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W or 12W (5W on Mini) USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (2.5W, most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.

  • Not your normal How to Transfer issue

I am buying three iPod's for nieces and a nephew for christmas and I am wanting to add off of my CD (not an iTunes bought one) so they have something to listen to christmas morning. Now what I don't know is how does this effect them taking them home and using a different version of itunes?
Macbook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

It doesn't. They will be using the same version as you but that doens't really matter.
When they get home, load iTunes and plug in the iPod.
It'll ask to use sync the library on this computer to this iPod.
    Just slect Yes.
This will tell iTunes to use the library on their computer as the library for their iPod.
It'll erase what you put on the iPod and load what they have in iTunes onto their iPod.

  • IPad charging issue.

Yesterday I took delivery of four 64GB iPads for work. Two are WiFi only and two are 3G models. Here's the strange thing. One of each type will only charge from the included power block and cable. The other two will charge on my MacBook Pro, from the included power block and from my new ZaggSpark backup battery unit. The two that won't charge except from the power block have gone to PC users but I don't see how that could be an issue unless the USB ports on their IBM desktops aren't providing a sufficient charge. That doesn't explain though why neither of the two units won't even charge from my Mac. Strange voodoo or busted out of the box?

The amps needed to run a wifi Ipad with the battery at 100 percent is so close to the average USB 2 limit that it is a coin flip on what you will see.
You would need 0.82 to 0.96 amps to NOT see the Apple message about "NOT Charging"
    ---FYI stuff ---
Tested with only a wifi Ipad with battery at 75 % I needed 0.96 amps to run and get a charging Icon.
If I turn off wifi the Ipad will use 0.49 amps if battery is at 100 percent
Sleep mode -slow charge to full battery with wifi on is 0.09 to 0.10 amps

  • Not your normal grey screen of death . .

    Hi all –
Something’s crapped out on my first Gen 8 core Mac Pro and I need rescuing. I come to you after about 4 hours of trying everything the Internet has to offer. Here’s what’s up –
Machine froze with a spinning beach ball. Tried to reboot, got the apple logo with the spinner underneath it, just at the point when the spinner stops spinning for a second, and you expect it to go through blue screen to your desktop pattern, it just went to a light grey screen with some blocks of thin colorful lines arranged in rectangles across the screens – (I have 2 screens).
    Not good.
    Here’s what I’ve tried.
First, tried booting from Diskwarrior disk and then Snow Leopard disk – same thing. So it’s not my system disk (snow leopard), but just to be certain, I hooked up the Mac Pro to my laptop in FW target disk mode – all the drives showed up, and I could run disk repair from the laptop on the mac pro’s drives – minor errors needed fixing on the system drive but basically everything was ok, so at least my disks are good.
Reset the PRAM – many times. No joy
    Booting in safe boot mode.
Took out the power chord, waited a minute – put it back in.  Nada
Disconnected all peripherals except mouse and keyboard.
Tried one monitor at a time. Here I got a little something. With just one monitor hooked up, no funny blocky patterns, just grey screen. So that’s something different.
Took out all internal drives except startup drive.
Took out and reseated the video card.
Tried taking out RAM modules a pair at a time, and here something happened. I have 9 gigs of RAM, 1 gig that came with the machine and 4 x 2 GB DIMMs (?)  Removing ANY combo of RAM from the machine, the behavior at boot up changed somewhat. After a while of grey screen, the monitors would suddenly shift to blue screen, but just when my hopes were got up, it would flash back and forth before settling back on light grey screen of death. At this point I would generally have a working cursor, usually spinning beach ball, sometimes regular pointer, which I can mouse around with. Also pressing the volume buttons on the keyboard would give me noise, but just for one go round, then that stopped working.
Put all the RAM back in, and it’s back to the grey screen with blocky patterns, and no blue at all. In all cases, the hard drive is trying to get me going for a few minutes before it gives up and relaxes.
So that’s where I’m at. I’m hoping someone will tell me I need a new video card – not too expensive. But if that was the case, would I be able to see the apple logo at the beginning – or the shifting Target Disk mode icon? The display is fine at those two times. My instinct tells me the logic board is ok, or else how could I boot into target disk mode, and would the boot process even get as far as it did? wishful thinking?
    Any clues anyone?
If I don’t respond, immediately it’s late here on the East Coast, and i may have to crash, but all help is gratefully received . .
    Regards and thanks
    Malcolm

Hi hatter – thanks for your input
A corrupt hard disk can prevent booting from CDs and DVDs.
So I took the boot drive out and tried booting from my snow Leopard DVd – no go.
You say "boot from Disk Warrior." I never boot from a DW CD.
Well, it is the recommended way of repairing a directory using disk warrior. One absolutely can boot from a DW DVD. But at this point i don't think it's a directory problem.
You saying that you don't have clones of your drives?
You don't have a small emergency system drive / volume used justfor maintenance?
I didn’t actually say, but I have time machine backups of everything, and a less than totally current clone. No I don’t have a small system drive. Whenever I’ve had system issues in the past I’ve always been able to boot from the OS DVD.
UPS? they help in many ways. Not sure what or why it froze outof the blue, but when that happens even though you said "minorrepairs" I do NOT TRUST Apple's Disk Utility in such situations.
Actually I didn’t mention anything about a UPS either, but for the record, yes, I do use one.
Keep the OS only on the boot drive. Have spares and backups youcan boot from and use.
Boot with only a new drive or none and see if 10.6.x DVD worksthen.
    See above
Get out your OEM DVD and run Apple Hardware Test (it is on thelabel, hold down "d" on startup)
Well, I found “a” version of AHT dated 2007, which is before my Mac Pro, but it did work, give an accurate profile, and returned Test Results –“No trouble found”
One more point – I was able to network and use screen sharingfrom my laptop. My thinking was that if I could see the mac pro desktop from mylaptop it could well be a bad graphics card. Using “Chicken of the VNC” I couldconnect to the Mac Pro – chicken returned a black screen, but I could controlthe cursor (which was usually a spinning beach ball) from the laptop. This hasme flummoxed at this point.
Start using CCC or SuperDuper and plan on investing in a coupledrives unless you actually have some good drives you can rely on and put intoservice. Fresly zeroed preferrably.
Pretty sure at this point that the drive is not at fault, but I do need to use CCC more often. I have backup drives for everything - 8 drives in all . .
    thanks for your help . . hatter . .

  • My iPad 1 will not communicate via USB to my Mac or PC

When I connect to my Mac, nothing appears in finder and nothing appears in iTunes
When I connect to my PC(win 7), it gives a little tone (same as all peripherals connected via USB), but it is not recognized and nothing appears in the explorer.
    Here's what I've already tried:
    - rebooting iPad
    - restarting Mac
    - restarting PC
    - "troubleshooting" the unknown device in the control panel of PC
    - factory restoring iPad (and then restored it from iCloud backup)
    - tested the USB cable
Any other suggestions?  Other than this the iPad is working fine.

    Hello there, pickleshenry.
The following Knowledge Base article offers up a checklist of steps to try for resolving charging issues with your iPad. Although it is written for iPhone it is still applicable in your case:
iPhone and iPod touch: Charging the battery
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1476
    Resolving issues
If your battery doesn't charge, or if your device shows a low-battery image, black screen, or "accessory not supported" alert, follow these steps.
Inspect the connector at the bottom of the phone:
Make sure that there are no bent pins in the connector.
Make sure that the connector is free from debris.
If there are bent pins or debris, please contact Apple Support.
    Otherwise, continue troubleshooting.
Make sure that the outlet you're using works.
Make sure that the Apple USB cable and Apple USB power adapter work.
Plug the device in to power and let it charge for up to 30 minutes. If you don't have an Apple USB power adapter, try connecting to a computer's high-power USB 2.0 port (not a keyboard). The computer must be on.
If the device still exhibits an issue, try turning your device off and then on again while connected to power.
If the issue is persists, please contact Apple Support.
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    Pedro.

So does that mean you can simply transfer videos from the external hard drive to ipad? Do you need a wifi connection for that or can the ipad sync straight to the hard drive without that?
No first hand experience with them, but my understanding is that the HDs have a WiFi transmitter built in. You stream the content directly from it, probably using an app.

  • Why won't the iPod Classic 160GB charge with the iPad charger?

I found out the hard way that the iPad's 10w charger which works on my iPad-1 and on my iPhone 4s and on my iPod Touch *does not* work/provide a charge to my 2nd gen iPod Classic.
I had gone to Europe with a full charge on all of my devices, and on the long flight I used both the iPad and the iPod. Once in Spain, I left the iPod in the hotel safe; the phone and iPad were used throughout my vacation, receiving a charge every day via the 10w charger and European duckhead. The night before I left, I plugged in the iPod, knowing that I would need it for the return flight. Imagine my surprise the next day at the airport when I discovered that the iPod was practically dead. Before boarding, I verified that the charger itself (with the European connector) was still working on both the iPad and iPhone, and it was; but as soon as I connected it to the iPod...nothing.
When I eventually got home to the States, I sat down with both the 10w charger and two or three of the many other USB chargers I have accumulated over the years. With the exception of my ancient firewire connector, every single one will charge every single device-----except for the 10w charging the iPod Classic. The iPad will even get a charge from the non-10w charger; it just takes a very long time to get back to 100%. If I could find my 3rd gen Nano, I would try that, but I'm not sure where it is.
What gives here? Why won't the 10w charger work on the iPod Classic??

I finally got curious enough to get a young person's eyes to read the stuff on the bottom of my iPad Mini charger: 5v 1a which equates to 5W using Ohm's law P=IE (E=IR).
So that beng the max charging rate of a normal USB 2.0 port explains (derived from above posts by Bilbo_cheshire and CMJRoss) why that iPad charger does work when some of the larger iPad chargers do not work with the iPod. The current is limited so it does not cause the iPod to sqeal .

  • HT1476 iPhone/iPad charging problem

Our iPhone5 USB charger (from wall socket) often either does not charge, or does so very slowly. Anyone else having this experience?

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
If your iPad indicates the battery has dropped to the point of auto-shutdown (about 1% charge) do not power up and use the iPad...doing so can cause permanent damage to the Lithium-Ion battery. If the unit will not charge from the wall outlet, and the charger works with other iDevices, can you borrow an iPad charger from someone else? That will tell you if the charger is working for lower power iDevices and not the iPad. If another iPad charger does not work with your iPad there is not much you can do but take/send it to an Apple source to have it checked.
Please do not force the iPad to run the battery below the point at which it shutsdown.
    Hope this helps.
