Just bought a iPad 3 thats on iOS 5, is it possible to upgrade it to ios 6 using the ipsw and shift clicking update? Or is it forced to go to ios 7?
I know when you restore apple doesn't sign anything lower than ios 7, does the same apply for upgrading?
Could I use a custom ipsw for this? Any suggestions/help?

If I saved my shsh blobs would I be able to restore by directing the servers to my local machine?

You should be able to update your app... there are a very few selected apps that require a higher iOS. I so far had 1 app the required 5.1 on my iPad and im still on 5.01.

If you have an iPhone 3G then you can only update as far as iOS 4.2.1 but if you have an iPhone 3GS then updating to iOS 6 is possible just follow the article below as a guide to do this:

You cannot. As long as your device is qualified to run the most recent iOS, that's the iOS that will be installed on your device. If you are currently at iOS 5.1, the update that will be installed is iOS 7.0.3. The update process will skip iOS 6.x.x since it is no longer valid for your device.

Your one is maxed out at 5.1.1. So, yeah, unfortunately your choices are to find apps that are compatible with 5.1.1 or if your apps require iOS6 then yeah, it's time for a new device.

If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect to your computer & click on the "Update your device using iTunes".
Tip - You may need to disable your firewall and anitvirus software temporarily. Then download and install the iOS update. Be sure and backup your iPad before the iOS update.

I really don't want to upgrade to ios6 due to the crap maps but I am changing network and have requested the phone to be unlocked.
My current carrier has told me that the phone will be unlocked when I connect to itunes, which I have done (and sync'd).
Is there any way to tell if it is now unlocked without getting another sim card?
Is it a requirement to update the phone to unlock it.

You can't do it without a computer, although once you get ios5 that necessity will be gone. I would recommend taking it into the apple store. They will do it for you.

You can only update using iTunes on a computer. You can take your iPad to an Apple Store and they can update it for you. Make an appointment at a genius bar.
You will lose everything on the iPad if you do not have backup. I don't know if they will take it that far for you - backing up your device that it. but you can download alot of content again for free as long as you use the same Apple ID and as long as the content is still available - and free downloads are available in your country for that content.

The attachment is an .xls excel 97-2003 spreadsheet. I viewed the file in the email and did not edit it with any software. I can forward the file to anyone that is may want to check it out to see if they can help me. Might I try to reassure you that updating to iOS 5 is perfectly safe? The early bugs of iOS 5.0 were mostly worked out in 5.0.1, and that is the only version you can download as Apple only offers the latest version that is compatible with your device.

Guessing, but posts here seem 20:1 negative after upgrading iPad 1 to iOS5.
Most common is huge slowdown in response and crashing.
I'm a typical user in that I rarely post if not having trouble, so I suspect there are many iPad 1 users that have upgraded to iOS5 and have not noticed any significant hit in performance.
I'd like to hear from you folks that are happy.
Due to all the negative posts I'm holding up on upgrading my iPad 1 3G 64GB as my understanding is that there is no going back to iOS 4.3 after the upgrade to iOS5.

iPad1, 64GB, 3G. I updated to iOS5 a couple of days after it was released (servers were too slow to connect on the first day. ) I had only one crash, and that was my fault. (Moved Newsstand to a folder, which is not supported.) Otherwise, all is fine. As others have noted, on the iPad1, it's a bit slower, but nothing that's a dealbreaker IMHO.
The most difficult thing has been the amount of updates to the apps. Nearly every app I have had an update for iOS5 so it was like I was seeing 3-5 new updates every day. But I've kept with the updates and I think that has helped with my lack of crashes/lockups.
My only real complaint is with the way the iPod app changed to the Music app and how it now treats podcasts. (The "previously played" indicator is now missing.) And a few minor gripes like not having location based reminders (iPhone only feature. ) But otherwise, I'm reasonably satisfied with the update on my device.
If I had to make a recommendation, I'd be on the fence. If there is a "must have" feature you want (e.g.: Airport configuration utility, Messages, Twitter integration,) then go ahead an update. Otherwise, not updating now is probably not going to inconvinience you. Eventually, there may be "iOS5 only" apps but by then, you'll probably be ready for a new iPad.
