IPad (3rd gen ios6) preferentially uses LTE over WiFi when cellular data is turned on.

The icon in the upper left corner says so, and my mobile bill says so too. So was the Genius who sold it to me a liar, or is there a fix for this? Any help appreciated!

This is a user-to-user forum, not moderated or really observed by Apple and not how you communicate with them for these sorts of problems.
Cellular data will be used when you have it on, at low rates, just in terms of polling for cell nodes and maintaining connections to them. It only records in MBs there in Settings so you've probably just used a fraction of that.
It shouldn't really affect your wifi connections and d/l speeds, however. You can use the interim solution of just leaving cellular OFF when not using it, which is the smart money thing to do anyway; why burn battery power when you don't get anything except for perfect clock time out of it?
If it continues to happen, then your Users Guide has a whole chapter (at the end) devoted to what you do when things aren't going well, generally following the sequence of
Restart - red slider, then boot up again
Force Quit apps - either via Sleep/Wake followed by Home, or via Recents Tray
Reset - hold Home & Sleep/Wake to force reboot
Reset iPad Settings - Settings > General >Reset
Erase All Content -   same as above
Restore iPad Software - iTunes or iOS 5 equivalent
You start at #1 and work your way through until the issue you're seeing goes away. If you get through all of the steps and it still doesn't work, you're pretty much out of gas and have to start talking to Apple.
And, finally, for when you do want to talk to Apple about these sorts of matters, things not quite right but which  fall short of an actual warranty service call to AppleCare, then ...

i've lost my iphone with passcode lock and find my iphone lock on but the wifi n cellular data was turned off so no way i can trace it so the only question remains is will the person who finds it be able to unlock it and use it as his own ?
is it possible to change imei number?
i've tried for so many times n still the phone is offline so i've set it to offline mode with my message but it never shows the last location why?

If the device is found, nobody can use it without knowing your Apple ID and password.
The phone will only show it's location if it is connected to cellular network or Wi-Fi. If those options are switched off, you can't locate the phone.
With iOS 7, Find My iPhone includes a new feature called Activation Lock, which is designed to prevent anyone else from using your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch if you ever lose it. It starts working the moment you turn on Find My iPhone in iOS 7. With Activation Lock, your Apple ID and password will be required before anyone can:
Turn off Find My iPhone on your device
    Erase your device
    Reactivate and use your device
This can help you keep your device secure, even if it is in the wrong hands, and can improve your chances of recovering it. Even if you erase your device remotely, Activation Lock can continue to deter anyone from reactivating your device without your permission. All you need to do is keep Find My iPhone turned on, andremember your Apple ID and password.
What steps should I take if I misplace my device?
If you ever misplace your device—whether it’s just lost or you think it may have been stolen—you should put it into Lost Mode immediately using Find My iPhone.
Lost Mode locks your screen with a four-digit passcode and lets you display a custom message with your phone number to help you get it back. You can also remotely erase your device if needed, and your custom message will continue to display even after the device is erased.
While Activation Lock works in the background to make it more difficult for someone to use or sell your missing device, Lost Mode clearly indicates to anyone who finds your device that it still belongs to you and can’t be reactivated without your password.
To put a device into Lost Mode, sign in to icloud.com/find from a Mac or PC or use the Find My iPhone iOS app.
For more information, read what to do if your device is lost or stolen.

  • HT1695 How do I know if my iPhone 5 is using a local wifi or cellular data?

How do I know if my iPhone 5 is using my home wifi or my cellular company's cellular data?
My phone has been set up (connected) to my home wifi but I have no idea if it's using my cellular data plan or going through my home wifi.
I've had my phone for 2 days and burned through almost 1GB of data and I haven't been using it that much.
Is there something running in the background that is eating through my data plan?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,

you could monitor data usage in settings/general/usage.  if it is a problem for you you might go to settings/notifications and turn off notifications from apps that you don't want to receive notifications from. also try turning off cellular datain settings/general/cellular.  you might turn off push notification for email in settings/mail/fetch new data and just manually check for email messages rather than have the phone do it constantly

  • IPad 3rd Gen Shows Strong Verizon LTE Signal but no Internet

I've heen having a frequent issue where my Verizon LTE iPad is showing a full LTE connection but than I get error messages that I'm not connected to the Internet.  So I end up having to toggle Airplane mode to get it to reacquire a signal (which might take a minute or two) and than all is well again until the problem happens again.  This typically happens when I'm on the move as opposed to being at home; so perhaps an issue with transferring between cell towers but any advice to alleviate the problem would be appreciated.

Is this issue happening on both your work PC and MacBook or just one or the other? Are both PCs Macs? Is your "work" e-mail web-based that you can access from any web browser via just an Internet connection?
Do each of your computers use the same DNS server settings? The default would be your ISP's DNS servers.

  • IPad (3rd gen) loosing screen response while in media shared movie

    iPad 3rd Gen - iOS6
    Native Videos App
    Home Sharing Videos
    iTunes 11
Mac Mini - Late 2006 - Snow Leopard
When using the videos app on my iPad to watch movies that are stored on my MacMini (same network) there are some occasions where at a random point of a movie (usually about 5 minutes in) I loose the ability to touch the screen… the home button still works but for some reason the video still plays even though the videos app is no longer in the foreground. To make matters even more confusing I can double press the home button and "kill" the videos app… which usually does just that. But I can still hear the audio of the movie playing over the internal speaker. I can kill every application running and the videos still won't quit and screen touch won't work while the videos app is loaded. The only way to get the video to stop playing is to turn off the wifi and let the buffer run out.
I'll try and get a video of it, as this does sound confusing… especially if others haven't experienced it. It really only started acting up in iOS6. Any ideas?

Issue still the same even after iTunes making its own 'version for iPad/Apple TV'

Following ultimately helped me : Make sure that you are logged in at the App Store App or iTunes App with your apple ID and password with a US account. Turn your iPad off and on and than you should see the Radio button again. It won't work if you are logged on with a foreign account. If you are not logged in at all, it worked, too.

  • IPad 3rd gen not charging via wall socket

Ok I'm really annoyed right now, my iPad 3rd gen has suddenly decided not to charge when plugged via adapter to the wall socket. I thought it was the cables fault so I went into the currys store and bought an apple charger, came home and I have the same problem. When I plug my iPad to the wire to charge the battery sign flashes between between charging and not charging and then I get a message saying maybe this device is not compatible with the iPad and now I just keep getting the message saying "not charging". So I plugged the wire to my MacBook and yay the iPad charges, but its a little bit inconvinient for me and I prefer charging via the wall socket. I've tried everything resetting etc I've even done the software update (ios7.1). Can someone please tell me what's going on, am I doing something wrong? Any help would be appreciated! Oh I've also ordered the apple 12w adaptor charger, do you think this will solve the problem? Thank you

You, say, " I thought it was the cables fault", but then you say, "I went into the currys store and bought an apple charger". Did you buy a charger or a cable?
The problem could be the charger. If so, the new 12W charger should solve the problem.

  • How can you manage data usage when cellular data is off, but you are using WiFi where your WiFi provider charges for data use?

I spend quite a few months each year in Canada where I use a Telus Cellular Hub device which is also my WiFi Router.  My iPhone 5 has Cellular Data set to "Off" which insures I won't be charged via my Verizon Wireless Service Provider for charges while in Canada.  Trouble is Telus, Rogers and all the Canadian Internet Providers charge for all Data going through their Systems.  Again, My Cellular Data on the iPhone 5 is turned off, but I use WiFi for such things as checking the Weather, or FaceBook, or searching the Web.
I believe that things may be happening in the background from various Apps that use quite a lot of Data.  It could be that iCloud is part of the issue with things being backed up automatically.  It also could be that Apps like AP or other News Apps are sending large amounts of Data in the photos associated with their New Stories, etc.  I typically turn off the App Store "Updates" such that they don't automatically load.  The FaceBook works now posted videos play when you are just scrolling through the News Feed.
I have been trying to fine an article somewhere which focuses on this specific problem but unfortunately many if not most articles are about folks worried about using Cellular Data while in a WiFi environment when their Cellular Data is turned on.
Does anyone know of a fairly comprehensive article about what settings on which Apps might reduce the Data Usage when Cellular Data is turned "Off" but you are going through a Service Provider who charges for all Data Accessed even when you are using WiFi?

Thanks for your comments, it is clear you understand my plight.  The trouble is fully understanding what Apps and App Features are transferring data in the background any time you happen to turn WiFi to on (even if you have had it off most of the day or night).  Obviously things like Location Services can constantly be sending and receiving data from my iPhone without any action on my part.  Also if you have things like photo backup on the iCloud then each time you take a photo you are sending a copy out.  All App Updates if set to Automatic also can add up to quite a bit of Data.  Reading the News on AP or scrolling through FB News Feed is actually adding up to a lot of Data.  There could be other culprits that I am not even thinking of.  I don't want to turn Apps like Find My Phone off or turn iCloud off due to loosing the value of such a program entirely.  Again thanks for your quick response.

  • (iPad 3rd Gen. Wi-Fi) Lack of charging capability while plugged in and in use

    Hey all.
For some reason, it has come to my attention that while my iPad (3rd Gen. Wi-Fi) is plugged in (to a standard outlet from the stock charger out of the box) and in use (no battery saving settings; ie. dimming the brighness), it will charge the battery any significant amount. For instance, when I am using it to watch YouTube videos over Wi-Fi while charging it as well, it was at 10% charge, but after...maybe an hour or so, it was at 11% charge. Curious, no?
Is this a problem that should be of any concern? Or should I simply turn it off while charging it? Thanks for any help.
...Why isn't the New iPad listed in "products?" Meh...
    Cheers!

  • Is it safe to use the new ipad (3rd gen) while on charge

I have the New Ipad (3rd Gen) 32gb wifi onlymodel,, and I use it while on charge i notice that it took way longer to charge while i use... will in not damage the devoce nor the batter if i use it while on charge?

The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.

At this link http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/galaxy-tab-android-tablet,3014-11.html , tests show that the iPad 2 battery (25 watt-hours) will charge to 90% in 3 hours 1 minute. It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. If you are using your iPad while charging, it will take even longer. It's best to turn your new iPad OFF and charge over night. • Unable to use iCloud Backup on iPad (3rd gen) Wi-Fi, iOS 6.0.1

Hi, I have been unable to use iCloud Backup for several weeks on both my iPad (3rd gen) Wi-Fi, iOS 6.0.1 & my iPhone 4, iOS 6.0.1
iCloud Backup is set to On on both devices. It did backup once or twice, since I installed the iOS 6.0.1, then it stopped working altogether.
I hope someone can help me.

I know. In my post I said ....
"remove the all day event or change the event from all day - in whatever application on your computer that you sync the calendar from and them sync again to remove the event from the iPad calendar."
You will need to do this from your computer. If you do not use your computer to sync with iTunes, you will not be able to get around this.
However, I should have asked of this only happens when you are trying to view events in March, so maybe I misled you. I apologize. Try this now. Quit the calendar app completely in the recents tray and reboot the iPad.
Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Double tap the home button and the recents tray will appear with all of your recent apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the app that you want to close. Tap the home button or anywhere above the task bar.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

Hi thanks for the encouragement.  It's not that the severs are "swamped", iOS 7 has been successfully installed.
I can't access the apps list in iTunes because it *****
down.  Its pretty frustrating because many of my apps require me to manually transfer files into iTunes first to view
them.  Not sure if the servers being swamped is an issue for me, unless they release a bug fix through another version of iTunes.
Has anyone else had this problem?  My iPad is pretty useless unless I can access my app list in iTunes....

  • IPad (3rd Gen) charging

For starters, love my new iPad 3rd gen (I guess that's what we're calling it now?), received yeserday. Retina display is noticably different, camera even looks bigger, and I can feel the extra thickness, though not a problem. Also love the dictation. Smart Cover works great. Here's the issue: iPad is not taking a charge, at all.
    Details:
    Charging icon does appear
Used the 10W power adapter that was included
Display was off, smart cover was attached
Went to bed with iPad at 9%, woke up and said 9%
    What I've tried:
    Different outlets
    Different USB cables
    Different 10W power adapters
With and without the extention cord for the power adapter
I'm pretty sure it's an iPad issue, and am booking a Genius Bar appointment today. I'm thinking the only solution is a replacement. If anyone has a suggestion before I'm off, or would like to let us know if you're having the same problem, all comments are welcome
Now on a happier note, love the new iOS 5.1!
The camera shortcut is convenient. I don't really speak Japanese, but sometimes set Siri to that just for fun on my 4S. I like seeing the 4G icon, even though it's nothing new. Best yet, the battery on my iPhone 3GS is a huge improvement! Would maybe last 2 days in standby, now it's been 2 days and 60% battery remains!!
