IPad (3rd Gen) - iTunes Library larger than storage amount

Hi all.
I'm looking into buying an iPad (3rd Gen) from amazon. I currently have a 12GB iTunes library. I would prefer to have buy a 16GB iPad for the price, but that leaves me with less than 4GB. How do you use the iCloud to only down load some parts of my music library so I can still have pictures and apps and movies?
Thanks!

Hi Josh,
I have exactly the same issue.  I also have many songs I purchased on iTunes that will not download.  It seems random.  I have 3 recently purchased albums that only half the tracks on one album will download, most on another, but only 2 on another.  It's annoying!  I keep tapping download and they just give up saying Cant connect to iTunes'. Even though it is.
Regardless, I have too exactly the symptoms you described, but had them periodically before today.  Again, not sure if its related, but have you recently got an Apple TV?

  • How to manage an iTunes library larger than the capacity of my iPod?

I have a 40G iPOD and now my iTunes library is larger than that. When I last synched, iTunes automatically created an iPod list. I'm unclear on how the subset of songs was selected. When I add new music, do I have to manually move things in and out of this playlist, or is there some more clever trick?

If the library is larger than the iPod, it simply selects at random, enough songs to fit.
Here's a better way to do it yourself.
    Create a new Smart Playlist.
Match rule My rating does not equal one star.
Limit to 37.5 GB (or whatever) of songs at random.
Songs you don't like rate them one star and they will not get put on the iPod or will get removed next time you sync.
Open iTunes prefs and set to Auto update only selected playlists and select this new playlist.
Also, any songs you do not want to go onto the iPod at all, uncheck them. I do this for podcasts, Christmas songs and such.
When you want to change the songs, simply select this playlist in iTunes, select all the songs and press delete.
It will empty and then fill up again based on the criteria above.
Then connect the iPod and resync it.
This is how I do it as I have ~12 GB of songs and 4 GB iPods.

Hi, I have rented a movie (the butler) on my Ipad 3rd gen, but it refuses to play: not enough storage. I meanwhile deleted all kinds of apps and photos and freed up to 3,6 GB of storage but the movie still will not play.

  • IPad 3rd gen no longer charges unless shut off and not recognized by iTunes

iPad 3rd gen no longer charges unless shut off and not recognized by iTunes.  Done 2 resets, used original charger and cable and bought brand new charger and cable from Apple store.  Nothing works.  This started yapping after the iOS 7.1.1 update.

Common troubleshooting is to try a different USB port and to give your ipad a reset. (hold down the sleep and home keys for about 20 seconds. When you see the silver apple, let go and let it reboot)
You can also try on a different computer to see if it's the ipad or the computer.
When you charge, do you try to charge plugged into the wall? that's the best way to charge.
If you go through all that and it's still not working hten it may be time to make an appointment at your local apple store and have them check it out

Hi thanks for the encouragement.  It's not that the severs are "swamped", iOS 7 has been successfully installed.
I can't access the apps list in iTunes because it *****
down.  Its pretty frustrating because many of my apps require me to manually transfer files into iTunes first to view
them.  Not sure if the servers being swamped is an issue for me, unless they release a bug fix through another version of iTunes.
Has anyone else had this problem?  My iPad is pretty useless unless I can access my app list in iTunes....

  • When I play a song from the cloud on my iPad, is the song actually saved to the device or is it streaming it from the cloud?  If saved, how do I clear the songs to not exceed the storage on my iPad since the iTunes library is way bigger?

When I play a song from the cloud in iTunes Match on my iPad, iis the track actually downloaded to the iPad, or is it streaming?  If downloading, wouldn't the tracks eventually exceed my storage capacity on the iPad since my iTunes library is way bigger?  Do i need to delets songs off the iPad eventually?

It is downloaded, and yes it takes up space and can eventually fill up your iPad.  It's supposed to delete older tracks as the music app plays new ones and space gets low, but other apps won't delete songs and free up the space. So if you were going to say use the camera app and it was full of music you would have to delete songs manually.

  • Charging iPad One vs iPad 3rd gen via USB...

just got an iPad 3rd gen.  As I've read here, apparently, the PC's USB port doesn't supply enough power to make the 3rd gen battery charging icon say "charging".  Instead, it reads "not charging".  However, it initially DOES say 'charging', before changing to 'not charging' a couple of minutes later.
Question:  my iPad 1st gen ALWAYS charges via PC USB port.  Why?  Both AC chargers are 10 watts I believe, so why would the 1st gen charge while the third gen doesn't?  Does the 3rd gen require more charging watts than the 1st gen unit does?

Using the 10W charger, an iPad 1 will charge in about 3-4 hours, however, the iPad 3 requires about double the time. How long does it take to charge your iPad 1 using the PC's USB port?
The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W or 12W (5W on Mini) USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (2.5W, most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.

It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. If you are using your iPad while charging, it will take even longer. It's best to turn your new iPad OFF and charge over night. Following ultimately helped me : Make sure that you are logged in at the App Store App or iTunes App with your apple ID and password with a US account. Turn your iPad off and on and than you should see the Radio button again. It won't work if you are logged on with a foreign account. If you are not logged in at all, it worked, too.

  • Multiple apps closing on iPhone 4s, but working on iPad 3rd gen

It was just this morning when I realized that I cannot play Diamond Dash on my device, I closed the app and tried to open it again, but still it closed on me. So, I deleted the app, and reinstalled it on my iPhone via the iTunes store, but the problem persists. Lastly, I did a reset (power button + home button for 10 secs) and it's still the same.
I have also added 15 more apps today, and 6 of them are closing on me, (plus Diamond Dash) which were all working on my iPad 3rd gen :( what am I missing here, please help xs

In addition, my 4s has a greyed out wifi (thanks to the update) that is why I use my iPad to download large files from the app store. I just sync both devices on iTunes so that I can transfer purchases. I thought by doing this might have caused the issue, but earlier I did try downloading 2 free apps using data, one worked and the other closed on me.
I really need an advise as we don't have any legit service centers around. pretty please *beautiful eyes*

  • IPad 3rd Gen charging woes

I have an iPad (3rd gen) 64GB (WIFI +4G) and been having following prob from day 1.
When I plug my new iPad into power to charge it, because it's getting low on battery, I continue to use while it's charging. I notice that the battery percentage indicator keeps dropping instead of slowly rising like my iPad 2 did. The battery keeps dropping while plugged into power until it powers off completely. This is crazy.
I could use my ipad2 indefinitely if it was plugged into power. Now, I can't use my new iPad with it plugged in before it runs out of power!
When I leave it overnight to charge, I have noticed that it stops charging by itself around 70 or 50%. Shows not charging when I pick it up in the morning.
Iam an ardent user of apple products and am disappointed by these charging woes. Maybe u guys need to provide us with a higher capacity charger than the 10W one.

  • IPad 3rd Gen WIFI or GSM?

My iPad 3rd Gen is a 16Gig wifi+cellular version. I did face a problem of getting the error of wrong firmware earlier at times when I tried to restore it by manually downloading the firmware.
The Model stated in About section of Settings is  = 'MD369B/A'
I am downloading the firmware iOS 7.0.4
Which firmware should I download, GSM or WIFI ? Kindly guide me!
Thanks in advance for any reply.

Since its cellular you'll want the GSM version.
But now sure where you are getting this option.  iTunes will download the correct one Automatically.
If you are a developer and have access to alternate firmware versions then this should be posted in the developer forums.
Other than that, downloading firmware separately is not something supported by Apple.
