IPAD accessibility feature - speak selection

Does anyone know if the "speak selection" accessibility feature is only available on the iPad 2 with certain software updates?

Yes, but I mean the "speak selection" option that appears when you highlight something and you are given a choice to push copy, define, speak.....separate from Voiceover.

  • Will IPad Accessibility Features work with pdfs?

I am unable to use "Speak Selection" or "Voice Over" with my pdfs in the Adobe Reader app.
Is there any way to add speech to pdf docs?

I don't believe those features have yet been added to Adobe Reader for iOS. The Reader product for mobile is less mature than Reader on Macintosh or Windows since it's development is relatively recent.

  • Why won't "speak selection" accessibility feature work to read iBooks or PDFs?

I have discovered that in iOS 5 there is a "speak selection" feature that can be turned on in Accessibility.  I like this versus Voice Over for students who need to hear text aloud because it bypasses all the changes of how the iPad works when Voice Over is turned on.  However, it doesn't appear to work with PDFs?  Can anyone help?  Is there an app that will read PDFs aloud?  "Speak selection" is working great in Safari or for e-mails.

Speak selection for PDFs works in iBooks on iOS 6.1.

  • IPad zoom accessibility feature doesn't work anymore

For years I have been using the zoom accessibility feature on my 1st generation iPad.
Two days ago, the zoom stopped working, i.e. it doesn't zoom to 200% but only to circa 110%.
I reinstalled the software and even upgraded to iOS 5.1.1. to solve the problem, but had no success.
    Any hints much appreciated.

    Bump...does anyone have any ideas?

  • Accessability features all OFF, but phone still speaks autocorrect? Weird!

My 3G S was activated and running flawlessly shortly after it got to me today. It's fantastic and I have no almost no complaints, but there's a little issue that I'd love to fix immediately, even as I write this: when my phone autocorrects something (such as "california" to "California"), it speaks the word when the white and blue box with the little x pops up. Any suggestions? Feel free to point and laugh; I just can't figure out how to stop it!
It's likely an easy fix and I feel like a total idiot for not knowing what's going on. If it matters, I upgraded from the first gen phone, which had 3.0 as of last night but I barely used it. And just there, I paused after hitting the "i" for "it," and it said "capital i" to me when it prompted the correction. This has the potential to be more than mildly annoying. ha.

plug it into your machine with itunes on it... let it find it then click the iphone under devices... then on the summary tab... then click the "Configure Universal Access"
If Speak Auto Text is checked then un-check it and click OK then sync.
If Speak Auto Text is Un checked go ahead and check it.. click OK ... sync.. then go back into "Configure Universal Access" and un-check it click OK then sync.
Might just need some toggling from inside itunes itself

  • I'm using Mac with OS 10.9.4 and Photoshop CC. I am unable to access "Focus Area Selection". When I go to "Select" on menu its simply not there in the drop down menu. Any help?

How do I access "Focus Area Selection" in Photoshop CC on a Mac? It's not showing in the "Select" drop-down menu.

Select > Focus area is in Photoshop CC 2014, not Photoshop CC.  So you must download and install CC 2014 to have access to this new feature.

  • Accessibility feature not working - using white on black contrasting colors

There is an accessibility feature that allows a pdf file to be viewed in other than the default black on white background. The choices are white or yellow or green text on a black background. This last worked for me with reader v7 ... neither version 8 or the newest version 9.3.0 works correctly ... when white on black is selected the file is still displayed in the default black on white format. Does anyone know if there is an Adobe product manager who would be able to confirm this problem ... or perhaps  have a workaround for it?
    thanks ... Don

    Loreall,
The replace colors feature in Reader only changes the color of the primary page background, so if the author added a background to the document (even if the added background is white) then this might cause the issue you describe.  One thing that may help is if you enable reflow mode, as this forces extra backgrounds to disappear.  You can try this by locating the option in the view menu or by hitting Ctrl+4.

  • IOS Speak selection Bug

1)The Speak selection were very useful built in ultility since IOS 5 , however that were massive importment after IOS 7 which able to read miscellangeous languagues without changing devices to certian languge, but bug still present once you write the word in your text message box in selection the word & press speak , the OS able to speak for only first time, mute for second attempt! what i need to do is , quit or reselection again this word & press the speak button again to enable read function again.
    2) i wish speak selection still keep preserve as IOS 7 which allow press the message & more option appear speak , which allow OS help me read the mandarin or others languages rather than copy whole message & paste to message box & press more -> speak. That will be other inconvinience way to make it read message by individually. as i known, IOS 8 add in features which only use both fingers drag from top of time can activicated the speak, read fucntion ,but this only read whole the screen for this message.

  • Speak selection

Hi, im currently using an iPhone 5 16GB and I'm having problems with the selection tool. the main issues are in safari but also appear in other browsers and apps. The first problem is that the selection tool is very buggy, it tends to select all the text (both up and down) when I'm simply trying to select a small section and will sometimes scroll up or down very quickly without me having to hold the selection near the top or bottom edges of the screen. The speak selection speed also seems to be stuck on one speed no matter what i change it to in accessibility's and there has been times where nothing happens when i click on 'speak'. I tend to copy what i need and paste it in notes which which seems to handle selection and speak selection alright. This problem has been off and off but it seems to persist in safari.

    Hi Cactusjimm,
When you go to Settings>General>Accessibility>Speech, and you turn on the Speak Selection button, at the bottom of the screen you will see a slider bar with a Turtle on the left and a Rabbit on the right. Slide to the left to slow down the speaking rate.
    Cheers,

  • How to add languages to Speak Selection on iOS

    Hello,
I have purchased voice files on my Mac for a company called : assistiveware (http://www.assistiveware.com). Their voices are really good and much better then the native ones on my mac or in iOS. They are available system wide on my mac and I have been enjoying them for all sorts of things (reading pages etc.).
I would like to know how I can manually add these voices so that they appear in the "Speak selection" menu of my iOS device. Is that even possible? I assume there is some folder somewhere that keeps the voice files for my iOS devices... can I just drop these voice files in there?
    Thanks,

you might look into the Voice Dream Reader app.
Excellent app with great language coverage as well.  It even has a free trial via the Lite version. Thanks for posting this!
Yes, if you want to read material without DRM in different languages with a spoken voice, Voice Dream Reader is a good alternative to using iBooks with VoiceOver's system voices.  The app remembers your location, supports searching for text, bookmarking, and navigation within the file, and can be used for a wide variety of file types.  It does not suffer from the current bug for PDFs where accented latin characters read by the system voices are pronounced without the accent.  This is annoying if you're reading in a language that uses accented characters, and you don't have access to an ePub version of the same book. Voice Dream Reader also a good alternative if you want to read DAISY books with a spoken voice in non-English languages.

  • Design process for accessibility features?

    Hello all,
I'm wondering if anyone might know where I can find some insight into how the iPad - specifically the accessibility features - was designed. I've found some speculation and one interview with a designer, but does Apple itself make its design process public? Or is it all proprietary?
I hope this is the right forum - I scoured the website for a more appropriate one, but couldn't find it.

Basically it's all proprietary. Apple tends to be very secretive about their design process. The available features are easily found:
    http://www.apple.com/ipad/features/accessibility.html
    and some general information:
    http://www.apple.com/accessibility/
but how Apple decided what specifically to address in a given product and how they approached it generally won't get discussed in public. If you are a media representative working on a story, you might try Apple's PR department and see if they can provide insight or connect you with someone who can:
    http://www.apple.com/pr/
but if you're enquiring as a private citizen, there's not much you're likely to be able to discover.
As to the forum, there really isn't a particular forum for these sorts of questions, since the Discussions are for technical support issues. This forum is as good as any, and the Hosts probably will allow the thread to remain as long as it doesn't become a poll or a complaint thread.
    Regards.

  • I did set up the password when I got the phone and iPad months ago but never turned it on. Now it is asking for the passwords for both my iPhones and iPad and I cannot select not the have the passwords active.  ???

I did set up the password when I got the phone and iPad months ago but never turned it on. Now it is asking for the passwords for both my iPhones and iPad and I cannot select not the have the passwords active.

If you do not want to use passcodes, why don't you just go to Settings > General > Passcode Lock and delete the passcode and set the lock to OFF.  That will eliminate the problems all together.

  • How to change language in speak selection

    Hello!
Once i bought my fourth gen ipod touch, default voice in "voice over" and "Speak selection" was British Eglish.
Some day i had to restore my ipod, and i did, after that default language was US English with female voice!
I found out how to change language in "Voice Over",even found Russian(no necesserity in using it, but its one of my native languages). Still "Speak sellection" was US English.
When i turn Voice over on, it speaks selection with right language, but it's very hard to operate every time to just hear pronaunciaton of one word(that could be spoken with submenu of "copy, paste, cut, define, speak")
So i'm wondering, why does changing language of "VoiceOver" not affect speak sellection in normal mode? and how to make it speak different languages?
    Thank You!

    first state:
"VoiceOver" language:British English (man voice)(i selected it by myself)
Speak selection ("VoiceOver"assist is ON) : British English.
    State 2:
    VoiceOver language:British English
Speak selection ("VoiceOver" assist is OFF) : US English (female voice)
BEFORE restoring "Speak seletion" language was British English by default.
and i want to know how to make it back.
