IPad and GPS

I purchased an iPad recently but did not purchase a cellular plan, 2 questions, does my iPad have a GPS chip in it? And if I want to in the future can I purchase a cellular plan for my same iPad or must I purchase a brand new one, I just bought this one 2 weeks ago and didn't think I needed cellular because I have an iPhone.
Thanks for any replies.

The personal hotspot feature on your iPhone is available through your carrier (you mentioned Verizon and AT&T above so I assume you're in the US).  This feature is not free, you have to have a plan to enable this feature with US carriers.  I find it less expensive to enable cellular right on the iPad on an as-needed basis since I don't need it every month, whereas a hotspot feature seems to be charged each month whether you use it or not.
However, a hotspot may not be necessary depending on what type of iPad you bought, and how you intend to use it.  If you bought a cellular iPad, you don't have to activate cellular to receive GPS, it will do that anyway as long as it is not in airplane mode.  The problem is, GPS is not that useful without an internet connection on your iPad since the activities that involve location also involve getting data from the internet.  Thus an iPhone hotspot would solve that issue.
But even without an internet connection there are map applications where you can pre-load the maps and points of interest onto the iPad, so there's no need to be online.  I use Navigon without any internet connection, even used it in Europe with absolutely no internet and the points of interest and turn-by-turn navigation were spot-on.

  • What is "Assisted GPS" on the iPad and how does it work?

What is "Assisted GPS" on the iPad and how does it work?

I purchased the iPad mini Wi-Fi & Cell because it has GPS. OK, it is assisted GPS but the GPS works very well as stand alone. I got the iPad mini for use in flight, so I dont even have a sim card in it. The GPS works perfectly in flight under all conditions. I have cross checked it against typical approved aircraft installations and it is very accurate at all times. I use it in Wi-Fi mode on the ground when updating my aviation database, when planning a flight, or similar circumstances. The primary advantage of A-GPS is quick location reading when first turned on, when on the ground where the GPS satellites signal may be of reduced quality. At 10,000 feet plus, it is a stand alone GPS. I have frequently turned the iPad off in flight for periods of time and when powering up, it gave me accurate positioning in a few seconds, never exceeded 10 seconds. I have also tested my iPad on the ground, using the aviation maps, and the GPS works perfectly also.
It remains possible that there is some feature that enhances the GPS when on the ground, even if there is no sim card in the iPad. But I doubt that any of these would work in an aircraft at high altutide. Nonetheless, I would appreciate knowing more about this.

  • How can I tell if my iPad's GPS is even attemping to get a position fix?

    MC773LL/A  iOS 7.0.4
The main reason I purchased an iPad was to use it as backup for GPS navigation electronics aboard my boat. I've used it several times just to test it, with purchased nav apps, starting from my home port, and everything worked as expected. Recently I didn't power up the iPad until I was at sea but only 15 miles from home port. It could not seem to obtain a position fix, and the GPS arrow indicator did not appear. I had no way of knowing if it was even trying to get a fix. My other GPS devices at least tell me they're trying. Is there some way know if an iPad is even trying to get a first fix? When I returned home, I powered up the iPad and everything worked fine. All the location services settings and others, including wi-fi, were left untouched.
Is there some trick to wake up the iPad's on-board GPS to get it working?
And how would I know that it's activated and trying to get a first fix?
    Thanks.

My iPad has onboard true GPS. It's Model MC773LL/A
The app is iNavX.  The GPS and the app usually work just fine. But, as noted in my original posting, I had an incident where the GPS did not seem to activate. And I could not tell if there was some way to see if it was even trying to get a position fix. The GPS arrow didn't appear. More details in my original posting. My questions remain:
Is there some trick to wake up the iPad's on-board GPS to get it working?
And how would I know that it's activated and trying to get a first fix?

  • IOS4 and GPS Errors

I live on the Mississippi and for the last week the GPS function on my iPhone 3G - upgraded to iOS4 - and my new iPhone 4 puts my location in Fort Walton Beach, FL instead of Diamondhead, MS. The same error occurs when I'm at work at Stennis Space Center.
Interestingly, my bosses iPhone 3GS that hasn't been upgraded to iOS4, and my iPad, both properly indicate my location. Friends and colleagues with phones upgraded to iOS4 are all in Fort Walton Beach, FL.
What gives? I know the GPS is assisted in determining location by local cell towers, but it seems that iOS4 is not verifying the location using the GPS chip.
This really ***, as all location-aware applications are now hosed.

Quick update for everyone. I got fed up with the no gps issue and ended up going to the apple store. The genius gave me a replacement phone and gps seemed to work fine on the replacement, but the touchscreen had issues. I then returned that replacement and got a second replacement which is having the same GPS inaccuracy as my original phone. This is obviously a software bug with ios4 that apple has yet to address. Frankly I am tired of apples lack of quality control in their recent products and will be looking for an alternative as soon as my contract with AT&T expires. What a shame.

The find my iPhone app shows my iPad and iPhone in a totally different location about 100 miles away and my devices are in my lap.... I'm confused ...

Any thoughts on this , I'm worried that someone has cloned my device Id  and is phishing , or would there be just a major glitch in the GPS ? I have turned off the location app and turned it back on to see if it was a glitch still comes up to the same location about 100 miles way to a place I have never been.  Help !

Look at the "location" section of the following specs:
    http://www.apple.com/ipad-mini/specs/
    From a previous post:
    A mini-education...
GPS signals are separate from and completely unrelated to both the Internet and the cellular telephone network.  GPS signals come directly from the GPS satellites.  They provide signals that allow GPS receivers to calculate latitude and longitude information.  Navigation software then takes that latitude/longitude info and converts it to land mass, roads, bridges, highways, buildings, etc.
Most navigation software stores the maps right in the iPad/iPod/iPhone but a disadvantage is that the maps must be periodically updated (perhaps once every two years).  The Internet is not required to use the system but it is required to update the maps.
Some navigation software gets the maps from the Internetand requires an Internet connection to function but an advantage is that the maps are always up-to-date.
The WiFi+3G/4G iPad and the iPhone both have a GPS receiver.  The WiFi-only iPad and the iPod do not and these devices require an accessory.

Welcome to the Support Communities. The differences are spelled out here:

  • Differences in iPad and iPhone?

Ok, I've read all the pundits saying that the iPad's success depends on whether people think this or that, blah blah blah...
I want one, but I have things that I do not understand about the iPad and Apple hasn't explained them to me in marketing so far. Perhaps you can all help?
The simple question that I have... "What are the differences in the iPad and iPhone?"
Aside from the obvious, like size and the lack of a PHONE.
I'm one of the people who WANTS the iPad to be a giant iPhone.
I didn't think that I needed a camera in it, then I realize that will cripple many apps.
I do not understand how the apps work on the iPad. It seems like they are double sized and pixellated UNLESS the developer offers an iPad optimized version. I don't know if this is a separate purchase, or if the developers who update for iPad will have the software detect what the app is running on and just adjust accordingly.
For that matter, I don't know if I sync the iPad to iTunes and it automatically installs the apps and songs that I already have on my iPhone, or do I start from scratch purchasing apps and adding music?
The GPS situation is confusing to me. Is it the same GPS as my iPhone, or is it somehow less effective? Will the 3G version have better GPS than the wi-fi version?
I also have read a lot of speculation that Apple is purposely leaving out functionality (camera) to sucker us into upgrading in a short time. That would upset me. I understand that technology advances, but to deliberately leave out important hardware just for that reason is horrible marketing. And since the iPhone has some of these features, it sure looks odd that they aren't on the iPad.
In closing, I want an iPad (I think) but I am waiting for the 3g because I am under the (perhaps false) impression that the GPS may be better on it, and I like the idea of being able to get 3g on the fly when needed.
Any help in clarifying the differences in the iPad and the iPhone and how the user experience works would be greatly appreciated.

I think you have got most of it... more than most people. When I sync'ed my ipad for the first time on Saturday, it actually brought in everything that was on my iphone including contact list, music, movies, audiobooks, applications, etc.
Thanks, that was one question I did not know the answer to before I came here. And that is good news. I have 11 pages of active apps and probably another 11 pages of apps that are only on my iTunes right now. I wouldn't repurchase them ALL, but I would have had a lot of double purchases.
Also very nice to import all the contacts and such.
I also don't care about the camera... I already have the iphone plus many more cameras... don't need the ipad to have a camera.. also don't need the ipad to be a phone.
I didn't think that I needed the iPad to have a camera, but I am afraid it loses some functionality and cripples a lot of apps. Augmented reality is out. Also, a camera for quick pics when texting is handy. How else am I supposed to send my wife a topless photo from work?
Seriously, I use http://www.grocerygadgets.com/ Grocery app all the time. One nice thing about it is that you can snap a pic of the eggs (or whatever) that you buy and add it to your grocery list. I'm constantly at the store taking a quick pic of some product and adding it to the list so that the next time I go (or my wife goes) to the store, I'll remember which size/brand/flavor to get. The iPad without a camera cripples this app as well. There are a LOT of apps in the store that use the camera for SOME part of their function.
I believe that the iPad WILL have a camera in the future. We've already seen disassembly shots that show the space for it that is just like in the MacBooks. I wish this version had the camera built in, I'd pay more for it.
Regarding the differences between the 3g and gps.. don't know, but I think you are right about your guesses.
I wasn't going to buy the 3g at all until I started to read things that led me to believe the wi-fi version wasn't going to do GPS except in a rudimentary IP-based way.
When the iphone apps are installed on the ipad, the size is the size of an iphone and then you click 2X and they double but the pixels break up... I have read that there will be many ipad apps that will take advantage of the larger screen... so you don't lose the function of the iphone app.. it just isn't the size of the screen. Also, I didn't have to pay twice.. everything I owned came over during the sync.. if I buy an "ipad verson" later.. will probably have to pay again.
Again, that is useful information - thanks! I suspect that most developers will simply port a version for the bigger screen (especially games) that won't cost anything more, but will take advantage of the larger screen. I'd assume the only ones that will charge more (hopefully) are those that change the experience by using that larger screen space for new features or gameplay changes.
I love my ipad, but would have a tough time telling anyone that I have to have one or that my life will greatly benefit from it. I am a heavy ipod user mostly listening to podcasts and books.. several hours per day... so to me this is just a bigger ipod.
Yeah, I suspect you've hit the nail on the head. For those coming from iPod Touches, the iPad is great. If you are coming from the iPhone 3gs there may be some unexpected gotcha's in there. I see reviews all the time from people with Touches that are upset about an app not supporting them fully.

  • Hello dear sir I have iPad and I upgrade it after than it couldn't find my location by map

Hello dear sir I have iPad and I upgrade it after than it couldn't find my location by map?

You don't have to have the sim for the GPS unit to work. Go outside where there are no obstructions, Reset your iPad (hold down the sleep and home buttons, wait for the Apple logo, let go of the buttons) and then try it again.

  • What ipad has GPS? is it dependent of wifi or towers?

I have an Ipad 2 - NO Gps.  Was going to upgrade to 32GB Ipad to use with "navionics"  chart software to navigate my boat offshore.  A user told me that you can receive a GPS signal anywhere from the satellites.  Stopped in to an Apple Store to purchase the Ipad and was told my the tech this is not true.  The GPS is dependent on having a wifi or carrier connectionl to find your location. Who's right? Will GPS on the upgraded Ipad work 45 - 100 miles offshore or am I still stuck using proprietory systems like Garmin or Raymarine?  Would appreciate input on the subject. Thanks

    A mini-education:
GPS signals are separate from and completely unrelated to both the Internet and the cellular telephone network.  GPS signals come directly from the GPS satellites.  They provide signals that allow GPS receivers to calculate latitude and longitude information.  Map software then takes that latitude/longitude info and converts it to land mass, roads, bridges, highways, buildings, etc.  Navigation software is "map software on steroids."  It goes one step further in that it provides real-time directions to enable you to reach a desired destination.
Most navigation software stores the maps right in the iPad/iPod/iPhone but a disadvantage is that the maps must be periodically updated (perhaps once/year).  The Internet is not required to use the system but it is required to update the maps.

  • Does The New iPad have GPS receiver? Can I use it as car GPS navigate?

Hi, Does the New iPad have GPS receiver include as hardware? Can I use it as car GPS navigate?

If you get the WIFi+Cell model of iPad, then it does have GPS. You can use it for navigation if you purchase an app that provides downloadable maps. The built-in Maps app can work for navigation, but it doesn't provide turn-by-turn and requires an Internet connection to function and so usually isn't practical for in-car use.

I seem to have at least two, and maybe four, iCloud accounts, across my iPhone, my iPad and my MacBook Pro. Can I combine them into one iCloud account? I have been able to log into what appears to be three of the four iCloud accounts I have. Two of them seem to be remarkably similar, and one appears to be only for my MacBook.I think I know which one my iPhone is backing up to, as I successfully restored from a back-up last week.
