IPad & Apogee M/C

I recently became interested in recording my progress with acoustic guitar and vocal. I started using my iPad and Garage Band. Wanting better audio, I purchased an iRig dynamic mic. This helped quite a bit but I had trouble finding the ‘sweet spot’ to get good quality between the guitar and vocal. One would sound realistic and the other ‘tiny’. I now have an Apogee (condenser) M/C that solves this. It plugs right in without any setup other than adjusting the height and tweaking the gain knob. The sound quality is outstanding! I’ve found that using the camera on the iPad in video mode allows me to critique my ‘stage presence’ and save time in music lessons doing the accountability thing. The iPad video and Apogee M/C is helping me improve my art better than I could have imagined.
One problem is that I am unable to monitor. When my headset is plugged in, it disables the 30 pin connection to the Apogee M/C in either Garage Band or camera app. This means constantly plugging and unplugging to review the performance. The iRig mic has a headset plug built in that eliminates this. Is there a solution that will allow the use of my headset to remain plugged in while using the Apogee mic?

Thanks Kglad, but unfortunatley i can't do this becuase the button is changing size... Therefore by making it a child of this button means that the size of the text is also changing... is there not a way of making a text field have no weight as it were.. if the text box is static text then the button still works... so there should be a way to make it have the same state when it is dynamic text.

  • What connectors do I need for my ipad so I can connect it to my apogee duet 2 interface essentially using the ipad as an instrument utilizing a few of the synth and drum machine apps to record tracks into Logic on my Mac?

Ok, so I completely feel like this is a stupid question for those of you already in the know and recording tracks onto your Computers DAW from instrument apps on the iPad and other i devices. I can not seem to find out exactly what connector or unit I need to be able to connect and use my ipad as a instrument to record tracks onto logic. I have an ipad2 that I want to connect to my apogee duet 2 interface which is obviously connected to my Mac. I know Logic comes with plenty of drum and synth options but I still want to be able to use beatmaker, jam up pro and the sunrizer synth apps on some of my tracks. I do have the camera conversion adaptors. So my question is, do I just run from the camera adapter in the ipad into the midi port on my apogee interface? (I'm new to and still learning about midi) Or is there a special 30 pin cable I need to get that runs from the ipad into the XLR or quarter inch in the break out cables on the apogee? I did find one cord out there that plugged into the ipad and had left and right XLR connectors but my duets break out cable only has two inputs each is their own channel. Also , if the cable I need isn't midi  and does connect to the breakout cables, do I set it as an instrument or as a mic in the apogee software? Or am I completely way off base and needing something different all together. Any help would be much appreciated!
I have a fare amount of experience when it comes to recording, set up and the flow of standard instruments, using external hardware and plugins. But the last few weeks I spent a lot of time programming some great beats in beatmaker on my ipad and I want to track them into Logic. It seemed like no matter how I worded the questions when researching what I thought was and should be simple to figure it out, it just took me to answers I wasn't looking for. Thank you ahead of time. Like I said I'm just starting to get out of my comfort zone and learn about midi and the more digital side of things. So sorry about any ignorance concerning that side of things.

The new Apogee Duet for iPad and Mac, is compaible with iOS devices and includes a USB Midi input. This sounds like the perfect solution for your workflow.

  • Which adapter or cable for connection from apogee condenser mic to ipad 4 retina display 16 gb wi-fi?

    hello

    Hi,
You need a Lightning adapter with 30 pin...

  • Since I updated to 5.0.1 on my iPad2 my Apogee One no longer works correctly. I get loud  pops and crackles and my monitoring has changed completely.  I can no longer monitor through the Ipad headphone socket

On previous ioS Garageband worked perfectly.  The crackles now make it impossible to record with an external mic  or with the built-in mic on the One.  I used to be able to monitor via headphones plugged into the ipad headphone socket.  Now when I plug the Apogee one into the iPad camera port I get sound for 1-2 secs and then nothing.  The only way I can monitor then is through the Apogee One headaphone connection but it is loud and distorted.

Minor update:  I have multiple PC's in my office.  This same iPad and other apple devices properly work and sync with their connection to this other computer.  Both computers are running the 64bit iTunes and both have Windows 7 64bit OS running on both machines.  I tried deactivating firewalls and even deleted the iTunes with a fresh installation with no avail.
Something is keeping my Apple mobile devices (iPods, iPads) from being recognized within iTunes.  However, they all are properly recognized by my PC.

  • No sound from Apogee Jam with iPad mini and Lightning-30 pin adapter

    Hello everybody.
I'm trying to use my Apogee Jam with iPad mini but I am unable to hear any sound from it. Jam seems to work, since the led become green and react to the guitar signal. I tried two different guitars and different cables but nothing changes. Jam also works perfectly on MacBook Pro and garage Band, so I first assumed the issue was in the iPad or in the Lightning-30 pin adapter (genuine).
Oddly on AmpliTube I can tune the guitar, so some signal arrives to the iPad, but I can't do the same on JamUp, where the tuner seems not to reiceve any signal. Are there some settings I should check on the apps?
    Thanks for any suggestions!

Make sure you have the monitor input turned on in GarageBand. http://youtu.be/Eb8bN3tExio

  • Can I use apogee jam on ipad 4 with lightning 30 pin adapter?

Can I use apogee jam on ipad 4 with lightning 30 pin adapter?

OKAY Mikivai73, here's what I found: no less than TWO cheap alternative-brand imitation connectors that go 30-pin to lightning, failed to even make apogee jam device light up blue.
Spent hours mucking with it.  Finally tried proper genuine apple usb to lightning connector with the OTHER cable that comes in the apogee JAM box, and it worked straight off!
So, I am buying a genuine pukka APPLE 30-pin to lightning adaptor in the full expectation it will work, and have left questions for the Ebay guys who sold the two cheap (less than 5 pounds sterling) alternate adaptors.
For info, I got the Ipad 4,and the cheap adapters, one looks like the real apple one, right down to packaging, the other is a stumpy little thing, no cable just a plastic connector, with 30 pin one side, lightning other side.
That's it, I am ordering from the apple store now, can't be more certain than that.
    best regards from sleekitwan.

  • Apogee Jam to Ipad 4 via 30-8 pin adapter- Doesnt work

I bought an Apogee Jam yesterday and attempted to connect it to my Ipad 4 via the Apple 30-8 pin connector (Genuine connector, very expensive)
I followed the instructions for the Jam and nothing happened.
When first plugged into the Ipad the LEd gopes green for 2 seconds or so then goes blue. I start Garage band (or any other amp app) and try to start a session, and the LED remains blue.
This is drivingme nuts. The sole reason I bought an IPad was for guitar recording.
I called the Apple stroe and they were no help (called 2 local stores) they even refused to elt me come in and update the firmware on the Jam.
Would the firmware udpate fix this (assuming I can find soemone with a Mac) or do I have to return my Jam and wait for the Irig HD or similar?
Or do I have to return my Ipad?
    Thanks

Okay so I thought I'd update this for anyone in a similar situation:
Called another Apple store, worse than useless, wont even let me plug into an ipad or Iphone in the store to isolate if my Ipad is faulty. So much for genius support.
Anyway I bit the bullet and called Apogee, I was on the phone for an hour (£10 in international call charges). Ran a number of tests on my Ipad and PC (The Jam will work with a PC to a degree, at least enough to remove a faulty Ipad from the equation).
Turns out the unit was faulty.
I returned it to my local guitar store, who transferred a few units from other stores in order to check agains t other new, out of the box units.
I tried 3 units, on my Ipad, an Iphone 5, the store owners Macbook and the store PC. All 3 units were dead. Same exact fault on all three units.
Tried half a dozen different guitars and cables to remove those from the equation. All dead.
Store owner took all of the units home to try on his Ipad 2 last night, I am waiting to hear if he got any of them working.
t looks like I might have to wait for the Irig HD, or get a Line 6 mobile In instead.

  • Apogee Jam (firmware 1.5) not connecting to Garageband on iPad 2 (iOS 5.1.1)

    Hi,
Have just bought Apogee Jam. Works great with Garageband on iMac. But when trying to use it with Garageband on iPad, it woun't connect; most of the time the blue light is on, but every 15-30 seconds the green light flashes for a second or so.
I have newest version of Garageband, iOS, and firmware for Apogee. Anyone recognizes this problem?
    Thanks,
    Klaus

First thing to try is a reboot of your iPad. Press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously ignoring the red slider until the Apple logo appears. Let go of the buttons and let the iPad restart. See if that fixes your problem.
This solves many problems. Are you sure you have enough space left on the devices to hold the downloads?

  • Using Apogee Gio with ipad?

Does anybody know if you can connect an Apogee Gio to an ipad 2?
    Thanks
    Jon.

iPad 3 with camera USB adapter <- powered USB hub main into iPad. Apogee Gio into USB hub. The guitar input and headphones work. The pedal buttons do nothing. This was a breakthrough for me. Didn't want to purchase yet another input device. Apogee Gio can not be powered from the iPad. However once powered from the USB hub, it works. Also plugged my m audio 49 keyboard into USB hub. Everything worked. Rich sound through apogee with headphones.

  • Ipad Garageband doesn't recognize Apogee jam guitar input

I have recently bought an Apogee jam guitar input device. Device works with other software like Ampkit without problem. But garageband doesnt recognize the device as an input. When I hook in the device the monitor icon grays out and theres no input sound. The interesting thing, I can see green light on monitor icon blinking with every sound coming from guitar and audio recording device meter moves with it also. But when I press record it gives this error: "this device does not have an built-in audio input. You can not record audio ...". Any ideas? Mono is not enabled from settings so its not the cause of tgis issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have upgraded from iOS 4.3.5 to 5.0 and did a sync from itunes on my laptop. It did the trick. Now garaband is working with Apogee Jam without any problem.

  • USB to iPad, via Camera Cnctr e.g. Midi V-drum set, & Fender Mustang Amp

I've got the camera connector working with Roland V-Drum kit (TD4 Brain midi out), and also with a Fender Mustang Amp.
Drums: From brain (midi out) into M-Audio Uno (midi to usb), into iPad camera connector kit (usb to ipad) into iPad. Just open the drum set in iPad Garageband: kick, snare, crash, three toms, the bow and foot pedal on hat, and top of the ride all work perfectly, with dynamics according to how I'm playing my drum kit. The only limitations at this point: the hi hat rim/edge on my VH 11 hat makes no sound, (which affects playing style) and I am unable to trigger the bell sound while hitting my ride cymbal (Cy-8). (Might be able to adjust both of these through the Roland brain). In any case, it was plug and play: played and recorded a sweet groove very easily!
Keyboard: I expect that a midi keyboard, working through the uno to camera connector will work as well.
Guitar and Bass: Both of the following work: the Fender Mustang Amp, which has USB out, into the camera connector; and the iRig, through the audio input. I tried the Apogee Gio through the camera connector but that does not work ("requires too much power"). The new Apogee product in the ads is supposed to work nonetheless, and will go through the ipad connector rather than through the audio in.
In any case, I think we can now say it: The iPad is now a full blown 8 track recording studio, with midi capability. Way to go Apple!

    Hi guys
Sounds like things are looking promising for me (I hope)! I've just purchased the iPad 2 and have GB installed. I'm a muso (drummer) with a Roland TD9 kit, so I'm keen to record my drums into GB.
Reading this thread has inspired me to take the plunge and buy:
    - MIDI to USB cable
    - USB/SD card reader for iPad
I'm now hoping, once these arrive from shipping next week, that my prayers will be answered!
Any other experience or advice from others is appreciated. I'd also like to know about that hihat issue that someone was having with their TD4 rim triggering. I also just have the standard Roland hihat, so grateful for anyone's feedback on whether that's working for them??
    Thanks guys!

  • Apogee Jam No longer working after 1.1 update?

My apogee jam is no longer working after updating to Garageband 1.1. I have an Ipad 2 with firmware 4.3.3.
    Specifically what happens is:
    1. I open the garageband app
    2. I select the guitar amp
    3. I plug the Jam chord into Ipad (guitar is already connected to cord)
    4. Jam light goes green, blue, bright green then green
When Jam light goes bright green, the monitor button in garageband goes dim and doesn't work.
I've tried plugging my guitar in first, then starting garageband, no difference in results.
I have tried turning the monitor "on" prior to pluging in the jam, when I do this the monitor/sound gate window stays open until the Jam bright green goes on, then it disappears and the monitor button goes dim.
Outside the garageband app, the ipad does recognize the Jam in settings, general.
What's worse (for me...) is that I backed up the Ipad in itunes thinking that app data would also be backed up (as I read that in a description of backup). I then deleted garageband from the ipad and then restored it from itunes. Guess what, lost all my songs... Bummed out... Why wouldn't my songs be backed up???
Anyway, any ideas on the Jam issue would be greatly appreciated. I'm hoping I am just overlooking a setting?

Unfortunately, I don't believe that Apple keeps prior versions of Apps available at the store. GB was the first app I purchased there day one of my Ipad, incredibly worth the $, and I did actually look to see if you could go back legitimately. This is just one of the many reasons to JBreak your devices, so that you can go backward if you need to. This is a perfect example of why Apple should make prior versions available, but they think they know it all and never make mistakes, so that will never happen. Again, this is why folks take things into their own hands and why the scene exists. There are plenty of abuses, more than not IMO, but here is a perfect example of how people are screwed and can't use their Jams any longer without a JBroken device. They obviously know that this issue exists, they have employees on these forums. It will be months if ever they fix this issue, because the number of owners of Jam, although in the thousands, is small potatoes compared to the Apple owner universe. I believe it will only be fixed if Apogee is able to put enough pressure on Apple. If you see the Jam removed from the Apple store and GB site you know that Apple is choosing not to fix it, because they won't sell or promote it directly and then have to deal with complaints and returns. But even this will happen slowly...
Actually it occurs to me that Apogee may have to redesign the Jam AGAIN in order to get it working with 1.1 on Ipad 2 and Iphone 4s (devices with the newer processor). I wonder if they will recall or replace the Jams for people who now have Jams not compatible with Garageband. Again, Apple should be posting a warning for Jam owners on the Garageband download page, but that will never happen because Apple doesn't care about small potatoes.

  • Is there and ipad app that allows you to record and edit audio, but can record in the background?  This would be to record voiceover auditions/podcasts while reading a script

Hi wondering if anyone might be able to help me out.  I am an audio engineer and my wife is a voiceover artist.  We just got the ipad thinking she could record her voiceover auditions on the go, but we can't for the life of us figure out how to record audio while reading a script off of her email.
    Looking for an app that:
Either can record audio while in the background (garageband cannot)
OR Import text (copy paste I guess?) to read while recording
The app needs to  be able to edit audio and export or email out an MP3 - by edit audio I mean trim, fades, and move around sections.
Anyone have any thoughts on how to do this?  I have been looking around the web for answers for hours and can't find any.  Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi-  I've done a lot of research in this area and actually am just finishing a book on this subject which will soon be in the iBookstore.
The best app is TwistedWave.  It allows easy editing and recording, and also allows you record while you are in another app (such as a script your agent sent in your email)
I recommend MiC by Apogee as your microphone, available at the Apple store.
My book which goes in depth in how to get the best sound as well as how to edit is called:
    iVoiceover
    Super. Simple. Recording.
I'll post here when it's live in the iBookstore!
