IPad as 2nd display with MacBook???

Dear Folks,
I asked one of the Apple Store folks about the possibility of using the iPad as a second display with a MacBook Pro. He said Apple didn't offer a cable for that, but he'd been given to understand there was a third party (actually, I guess it's second party in this case [s]) app that would do that.
Does anyone know anything about this?
I don't need an iPad, didn't plan on getting one. But I'd kill for the ability to run a 'dual monitor' setup when I'm on the road. And I have looked at the iPad display-- it's way beyond anything else I've seen in a portable device and definitely good enough to do professional Photoshop work on (nothing else I've ever seen comes close to that).
This is my 'make or break' use; give me that ability and I'm buying one yesterday; without it, don't care.

Dear YD,
Wow, thanks! Instant helpfulness.
Yes, looks problematical. The rough edges (mirroring settings, ungraceful uninstall) don't particularly bother me. Reports of crashes when rotating a display and slow update performance do. Slow's a relative thing-- are we talking too-slow-for-playing-Quake slow or too-slow-for-updating-photoshop-window slow?
Since this'd be my only reason for getting one, I suspect the best course of action is to find a friend with an iPad, install the app on our two machines, and give it a thorough wringing out.
And maybe wait for the next rev [knowing, weary smile].

i have just used air display with macbook pro. i have disconnected now from apple tv. but my laptop screen is still very small like its connected to the tv. this means all the tabs and writing is very small. like the display down the bottom where al the applications are, is n the middle of the page and not spread down the bottom. this is seriously annoying! all the writing is every small and the tabs are small and its hard to read.  the air display link has disappeared from my computer. but the laptop screen is still very small. i want to know how do i get rid of this and return my macbook screen to its normal size. thank you

    Hello chrispyw,
If your content is still being displayed incorrectly, I would check the resolution setting for the built in display with this article:
OS X Yosemite: Adjust your display’s resolution
If it keeps happening whenever you use AirPlay then I would use this section of the following article to reset the display system:
Apple computers: Troubleshooting issues with video on internal or external displays
    Reset the system
You can reset the Mac's parameter RAM and SMC.Reset the resolution
Start by resetting the Mac's parameter RAM. If the display does not come up, was previously set to an unsupported resolution, and still results in no video:
    Start up in Safe Mode.
From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences.
Choose Displays from the View menu to open the preferences pane.
Select any resolution and refresh rate that your display supports.
    Restart your computer.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

  • 2nd Display of macbook

I've read a few things about the subject but never had a clear anwser. I've read that the maximum resolution for the 2nd display of the macbook is 1920X1200. Doesn't help me if I plan to buy a 19'' inches with a maximum of 1440 X 900. I want to use the 19'' to expend my desktop. Will it work properly (without distortion)
If you have any infos about that thank you for your answer

1440x900 is less than the MacBook's maximum resolution of 1920x1200. That means it'll work just fine as a second display at its full resolution. You just can't run a display that's larger than 1920x1200, such as Apple's 30" Cinema Display. But the 23", for example, will work fine, as will anything smaller.

  • Hi - How do I connect an HDTV as a second monitor to Thunderbolt display with macbook pro in clamshell mode?

I have a Late 2011 Macbook Pro in clamshell mode connected to a Thunderbolt Display with the built in Thunderbolt cable. I want to then connect an HDTV via the Thunderbolt port at the back of the Thunderbolt display. I already had a  cable that I thought would work which turns out to be a MiniDisplay port to HDMI cable and therefore not compatible with Thunderbolt to Thunderbolt (Mini DisplayPort not being the same technology although it uses the same port - although I'm not an expert !!) So far a web search has provided me with the only solution being using a Thunderbolt dock or storage that has multiple Thunderbolt ports and then  using that to daisychain inbetween the Thunderbolt Diplay and the HDTV. The cheapest solution I can find for this would be about £250. Surely not ??!!!!
Many thanks for any comments - Nik

You could also use aThunderbolt dock with HDMI, such as:

  • Installation of 27" cinema display with macbook pro silver key and bootcamp

For everyone out there who may be interested in using the new 27" cinema display with an older Macbook Pro Intel with silver keys and bootcamp.
    What is needed:
    1. Apple 27" cinema display.
    2. Macbook pro Intel silver key model
    3. Altona Dual Link DVI to Mini DisplayPort Converter (Model AT-DP400)
    4. Bootcamp 3.1 drivers from Mac OSX Snow Leopard V10.6.3(retail)
    Procedure:
    1. Update your display software on the Mac OS side. Apple has posted an update on their software downloads page, "LED Cinema Display Software Update 1.0" After doing so, make sure that the 27" CinDisp is operating correctly and you can change the brightness from the system settings.
    2. On the Windows side, install the bootcamp 3.1 drivers. These are on the Snow Leopard distribution CD. However, there is a bug in the .msi installer that causes the installation to go into an endless loop. This must be resolved during the installation of the drivers. The following article discribes how to do this:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2305631&tstart=0
    3. After you have successfully installed the bootcamp 3.1 drivers, then install Apple's bootcamp update: "Apple Magic Trackpad and 27-inch LED Cinema Display Update for Windows 32 bit".
    Good luck, it works!

I have the same MBP and recently bought a 23" cinema display on Craigslist for $140.  It works great.  I had a display port to DVI adapter and it worked fine.  Built a stand to hold the laptop vertically so it's out of the way.  Don't know about older displays but anything with DVI should work fine.
The screen size and resolution are great for photo editing.  I now have the best of both worlds, a display that rivals my wife's iMac and portability.

  • I can't seem to turn off my 2nd display (with no adapter plugged in)

Been looking on the internets for ages about this and not got anywhere, so did a completely fresh install last night.
The problem is that the DVI (2nd display connection) thinks that I have a VGA display connected (i.e. the 2nd display) when I plug in the DVI-VGA adapter to use with a TV that works fine. The 2nd display resets to align itself to the TV connected.
When I disconnect the adapter the Mac resets it display. Back to having this phantom display connected.
I've plugged in the DVI-VGA adapter as well and then carefully removed that and sameroblem.
Having done a fresh install that would mean it's not a software issue, so it has to be a hardware one? Something with the actual connection? Does anyone know of any potential problems as to why this would happen?
I've tried some compressed air. (I've lost the straw so it was straight from the can, spray paint style)
    Please help.
    Thanks.

  • External display with MacBook Pro in Lion

    Hello,
Yesterday I bought a Mac OS X Lion, and I found one annoying feature of the system - working on a MacBook Pro (MBP), and very often use an external display, with that do not use display in the MBP. When connecting an external monitor doing video processing, and this activity I was used by Mac OS X Snow Leopard to open the MBP there wasaccess of air to cool the computer. After installing the Lion was the fact that even at very small opening MBP is switched to internal MBP display. This is the functionality of the Lion off somewhere or somehow set? I looked in Preferences, and I have found nothing. Thank you in advance for information on how to solve this problem.

I own a mac mini that stays connected to the 52" LCD 120hz in my living room. The image is perfect, and fits just fine. I did a mini-display port to dvi and got a monster cable adapter for dvi to hdmi which too it to my tv. I did have to go into the tv and set the tv to overscan I think on the image to make it fit and you will have to adjust the resolution on the computer. I can say the colors are darker on the tv and this is just due to the nature of the screen size. Newer LED tvs may be better, but mine is only 1 1/2 years old.
For an external display, just go to the educators link, select your college and you get $100 off. My wife is an educator and I am back in college so it's no hassle. Or they just ask for an ID. I own 2 24" ACD and they are nice. I do photography and a screen calibration is a must. Once done you'll be happy. And docking with the laptop is handy.

  • Using a studio display with MacBook Pro

I have a MacBook Pro and an older 17" Studio Display with a DVI-D male connector. What do I need to drive the studio display from my MBP? And where do I get them?

Try Monoprice - http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=104&cp_id=10428&cs_id=1042802 &p_id=5106&seq=1&format=2 - or just do a search if that's not the one you need.

  • Compatibility of Past-Years Cinema Display with Macbook Pro Late 2011, and other displays.

    Hello.
I'm inquiring about the compatibility of Apple cinema displays from years past with Macbook Pro 15" Late 2011.
For instance, will all Apple Cinema Displays from, say, 2008 onwards work with my mbook?
They can be had fairly cheaply on the used market.
What is the earliest model that will be compatible?
I've never had an external monitor for my lappies, so I am very clueless. I know DVI is a common connection, but there is no DVI port on my lappie.
I would also be very curious as to what would be suitable displays from other manufacturers, particularly Samsung and Dell.
The size doesn't have to be big, 20-23 inch is fine, I am more worried about good resolution [no obvious pixellation]
If a screen is big, but has good resolution that's even better of course, but I'm not ****-bent on a big thing.
The mbook 15" screen is just a bit squashy for home use really.
Thank you very much in advance for any advice.
Feel free to link me to other threads as an answer, I have done a bit of searching around, but still confused.

  • External display with MAcbook closed?

Trying to set up an external display with my macbook. Is there some way to use the Macbook closed? I want to be able to use the external monitor as my main display and don't need the built in screen. Thought this was possible. Thanks for any insights.

Yes, it is. Connect an external USB keyboard and external monitor. If you don't have the keyboard then you can use third-party software that will allow the lid to be closed without putting the computer to sleep. Try InsomniaX, for example - VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

  • Ipad Calander wont sync with Macbook

Ok, after three hours and losing ALL my ipad calander entries I had to come here.
I am trying to sync ipad entris with macbook pro. Everytime I do it, on the macbook, the events start and end one day later.
I have time support on both devices and they both share the same location. I rad other forums here and made sure all the settings were the same. After hours of trying to figure it out, Ive lost ALL my birthday, work and bills due entries from my ipad.
Im at the point now where I dont think its worth EVER plugging my ipad to the macbook as something always ends up getting deleted. Someone told me Apple products were user friendly. I am not convinced. What should be a simple sync has turned into something extremely complicated.
Has anyone else had this problem and is there an actual solution? Or is yet anither issue with Apple products.

PS. Im using an ipad 2 and Macbook pro10.7.2.
And just to comment further, some single day events including bills and birthdays were suddenly spread over 2 days when syned. But it seemed to be totally random. Some stayed the same date, some jumped forward a day and others became 2 days!

  • 2nd display with out mirroring

I want to use my 17" apple display with my iMac, without doing mirroring. I heard there was a firmware hack to do this. Can anyone show me the website and tell me about the warranty effects. thanks.

The "hack" can be found here:
    http://www.rutemoeller.com/mp/ibook/ibook_e.html
it works very well on both my iBook G4 and my iMac G5 17" rev B. (both running Tiger)
I even use it with the Apple s-video adapter on my TV.

  • Calibrating 23" display with macbook Pro

I am using a macbook pro with and 2nd monitor (apple 23" cinema HD). I have tried using a Pantone Huey Pro to calibrate the monitors, but it doesn't seem to work. Even after i have run the tool, the images look very different on each display. I have (at least i think i have) changed the colour profile on each to be the same (adobe RGB) for testing purposes and still see a difference in the two displays, its driving me mad as i dont know which one is correct.
    Can someone please help?

Yes, all three cables are plugged in. The DVI connection, the USB, and the Firewire. - Interestingly, I was moving the machine around and unplugged the monitor power cable while the computer was asleep - then when I plugged the power cord back in, the computer woke up - monitor is now recognized and I have the options group. Go figure. So I suppose everyone can try this and see if it works. No more flashing lights.

  • Using Bravia TV as second display with Macbook Pro

After waiting weeks, my Mini DisplayPort-HDMI cord finally arrived, only to find that my TV wouldn't connect to my computer. After a full day of fiddling and lots of (mostly unhelpful) Googling, I managed to get them working.
My TV is a Sony Bravia HDTV LCD tv, and the Macbook is a mid-2010 running Lion; if any of that is helpful.
    I have a cheap Mini DisplayPort-HDMI adapter, and a mid-priced Rocketfish HDMI-HDMI cable.
    The Issue:
When connecting the tv and computer, there was a visual connection (both flashed momentary blue screens), but the tv would show it's 'menu' background and in the corner it would say 'Invalid Format'.
    What I tried:
         - using each HDMI port on the tv, to rule it out that it was an issue with the tv (however my cable box uses HDMI, and works fine)
         - connecting when the Macbook is on, when it's off, and during start-up
         - a lot of fiddling with the tv's menu, trying to find out if unsed HDMI ports were disabled or something (we found nothing)
         - changing the Macbook's resolution to the very worst to see if the tv could find that (didn't help)
         - contacing Sony to see if they had heard of this and had tips: to which the rep said that Macbooks don't work through HDMI, so I'd wasted my money on the cable.
    What worked:
I shut down the Macbook and booted it up in SafeBoot (hold Shift key during start up). In SafeBoot, my computer's desktop background showed (nothing else) and a little computer monitor icon appeared in my upper menu bar, which when selected showed a few of the display options available in System Preferences>Display. In this menu, it gave me a few resolution choices for 'Colour Display' and also a few for 'Sony TV'. I picked the highest one under Sony TV, and selected 'Turn on Mirroring' (which allows all my desktop icons and task bar to show, in addition to just the Desktop background). After this, I shut down the computer, still connected, and started up out of SafeBoot. Now in normal mode, my TV recognised the computer and I was able to sign into my Macbook user account while it displayed on the TV.
(If your sound isn't going through to the TV, go into System Pref>Sound>Output and select your TV. If the option isn't there, or this doesn't work, I don't think your Macbook's compatible yet, so you'll just need one of those stero cord which you can get anywhere and are super easy -- plug into Mac's headphone jack, other into the tv's audio jack.)
So, try Safeboot! I think someone, somewhere said that both the computer and TV try to guess and remember the settings they think the other need. If they're wrong, nothing happens but they always remember to go to those settings anyway. By going into SafeBoot, the computer is open to changing those settings and you're more likely to establish a connection.
(For sanity's sake, I would suggest turning off all of your 'Launch on Start-up' apps, since you'll have to wait for all these to load, and if your resolution's low in SafeBoot, you'll have a very crowded screen with a lot of apps going.)
Hope this helps someone; I wish I'd known to try this from the start.

    Thanks
