IPad as a gift

I've bought an iPad (wi-fi) for my mother's 80th birthday. She lives in Spain. I want to set it up for her, load some photos, link an email account, stuff like that. I'd love to load a few apps for her too.
I'm hoping someone will help me out here - what issues will we face when she has to use the Spanish iTunes? Will she need to create a whole new iTunes account (I'll need to create a US one to set up the iPad for her), and if so will it wipe the US content?
I will really appreciate help here. Together we can make an old lady very happy.
David

Just recently apple took off the US only hold on iTunes cards. So what you can do is install LogMeIn (logmein.com) it's free on her computer and on your computer. After that you can remote into her pc or mac and set it up for her that way and add the itunes card to the iPad so she can buy what she wants.
If she doesn't have an iTunes account you can make a kids account with your iTunes screen name and that way you can add apps, music and stuff for her and it will still allow her to sync her own stuff.
As for Spain's App market I believe it is very limited so I would stick with the US iTunes store.

WiFi will work, cellular will work but they may not be able to access LTE, they will have to send it back to you for the warranty work.

Go into settings, general, and reset all content and settings and it'll wipe your device to 'out of box' state.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
You can only locate your device when it is logged into iCloud and 'Find My Phone' is enabled, additionally the device will need to be switched on and connected to a wifi or cellular network.
Unfortunately, you cannot activate iCloud or 'Find My Phone' remotely.
If the device is wiped by you or another, you may not be able to locate the device (although some have reported they can)

    Important Notes

  • I am a US citizen in school in Montreal and I was given a US Apple Store gift card. How can I buy the new iPad using my gift card and with a school discount?

I am a grad student from NYC and at a university in Montreal. I was given a 500$ gift card as a gift to put towards a new ipad. BUT, I apparently cannot use the US gift card in Canada. So, what do I do? I have no time to head back to NYC to get it. I want to order it, but not sure they will ship to montreal...? And was thinking of sending it back to my parents and then have them buy it and mail it to me, but I I think them having to pay tax on this is ridiculous. On top of that, I should be able to garner the ed discount but I dont think the US recognizes Canadian schools in their system and visa versa. SO if I do buy it in the US, I can use my gift card but I can't get the discount. Or if I buy it here in MTL, I can get the discount but I cannot use the gift card..
Can anyone suggest a solution? all bright ideas welcome.

You can only use a gift card in the country it was issued in - no way around that as the Apple Store does NOT offer currency exchange with gift cards.
Nor can you order from the USA online store and ship to any address outside of the USA - again, no way around that as the online stores do NOT ship internationally.
You could send the gift card back to someone in the USA, to use to purchase your item for you, and then once they receive it, they could ship it to you.  Canada customs will hold it until they collect any import fees and taxes levied on imported consumer electronics though.
Either that or buy it in Canada with the discount, and use the card later when you get home again.

  • How to set up iPad as surprise gift

I am going to buy my mom an iPad 3 for Mother's Day.  As I just started working full-time several months ago (I'm 22), this will be my first big present to anyone.  I even ordered a case already, and am looking at speaker docks.  I want the ipad to be perfect and fully-set up for my mom by May 13th.  My mom is almost computer illeterate; she knows how to check email, and thats about it.  I want to completely set it up for her: buy apps, save bookmarks, add music, photos, etc.  I was planning on setting up an new email address for her, registering an apple id with this email, and buying apps with a gift card.  However, my dad has an apple id that is linked to his iPhone; I realized today that they might want to end up on the same apple id.  I don't want to use my dad's apple id because they share the same email address, which my mom checks pretty frequently.  Is she going to be able to change apple id's and still keep all of the loaded content?
If that is not possible, what are my other options?
    Thanks!

You really need to get the apple id straightened out before you start, or you will pay the price forever!   You have a couple of options.  I assume your dad is cooperating with this project.  I think you are probably right about using his apple account.
Make sure you have established the second e mail address and that to works.
Log onto apple.com, and in the upper right, log into the account.  Once in the accout, click on the area where you can change you data, and add the second email address.    Apple wil verify the adress by send it an e mail, and won't do anything further until you respond to an e mail sent to that address, so watch for it.
After the address is verified, on your accout page, make that address your primary address contact from apple.  That way if apple sends confirmations for apps and things, they will go to the new address, and your mom won't see them.  Then set the pad up using the same aple Id as your dad.  Remember, you have not changed the apple id or the password, you have only changed the e mail address for contact.   ( you can change it back after the surprise)
The other suggestion...  I have given a coule of pads to folks, and one of the real fun parts for them and for you is o
Ending the box, and doing the set up.  It is a great way for them to learn enough to use it.  Press the buttons etc.  pick their own apps.  You can gift her all the apps you want, and she can learn how to download them herself.
I gave a pad to mom in law, and did pretty much what you are planning, and at the end of the day, having it all set when she openied it made it harder for her to learn, rather than easier.
But you are doing a god thing, and I am sure she will enjoy the pad.

then restore device from old backup you need pics off of
    then import pics to computer

you may need to save pics to camera roll first
then restore the new backup and sync pics back to phone via itunes

  • I upgraded to an iPad2 and recently pulled out my old iPad 1to re-gift to a family member. I can't remember the password I originally set up - is there a way to get beyond this?

I upgraded to an iPad2 and recently pulled out my old iPad 1 to re-gift to a family member. I can't remember the password I originally set up - is there a way to get beyond this?  Each time I try a different password (trying any that I thought I might have originally used) it times out the tablet for up to an hour before I can try again.  Help?

You can restore the device. That is what you have to do if you forget the passcode. You don't have to worry about syncing to your own computer either since you don't want to restore your data - you want to wipe it clean. Read these articles for more instructions

Sometimes you may not be able to bypass the passcode at all when you try to restore. You may need to restore by putting the iPad into recovery mode. I have heard from some users that they did not have to do this when they restore after forgetting the passcode - but just in case you need the information, this will help you with that procedure.

  • I' ve just got an ipad (the new ipad) as a gift. It's a new one but Unfortunately, i found out that it doesn't have the App Store install. How to install the app? Please advice.

I just got an ipad (retina display) as a gift. But unfortunately it doesn't have the App Store application installed. How to imstall it. Then i asked the IT to help me to find the solutions. They asked me to RESET the ipad. I tried to reset the ipad but it request 4 letters of password which i'm puzzled coz i don't even create any password yet in this ipad. So how to get the password? Can some one help me to solve this problems. Thanks.

Your best bet is to contact Apple.  Those conditions should not occur with a new unit.
I do suggest that you read Chapters 1, 2, and 3.
If you wish to troubleshoot on your own...
First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  It could take well over an hour!  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore, go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.

  • I would like to customise a new iPad as a gift, if I do this using my account, can I transfer everything over to her account once she has received the gift? thanks

Is there a way to set up an iPad with one account (mine) and then when the iPad is given as a gift, transfer everything over to another?
I would like to 'fill up' a new iPad mini with apps, movies, music etc for my sister who lives in the middle east but I'm concerned that she will have to continue to use the iPad in my account...
    Suggestions welcome.
    Thanks

You cannot transfer purchased content from one account to another account. I don't think that you gift internationally either. You can only use iTunes gift cards in the country in which they are purchased as far as I know. If something has changed with regard to that policy, I'm sure that someone will correct me.
If you set up the iPad using your ID, yes she would have to use your ID to update and redownload purchases and that leads to another set of problems... Associating the ID with another ID can lock you out of your own ID for 90 days.

  • How to buy an iPad app on iPad as a gift?

Hi, is there anyway you can buy an iPad app on your iPod touch as I want to buy it as a gift! Thanks

Well, if you read the information under Details tab, it will tell you if it can run on iPad. Problem is generally the person will have to use a cheazy 2x feature to zoom it on the iPad to fill the display.

  • When to buy?  Giving an Ipad as a gift next week?

Giving a gift of a Ipad 3-G to a person at a conference next week. With the announcement of the Ipad two coming out today. How soon do you think Apple will begin shipping. I would rather see a Ipad two as the gift then the Ipad one. What is Apple's policy of allowing a person to upgrade from one to the other if it has not been used?
    Thanks,

Until Apple officially makes an announcement, no one knows the answer of when a new device is going to be released. Last year, it was about 6 to 7 weeks between the announcement and product launch.
There is no upgrade policy. You either sell the first device or if you are in the return window, you return it for a refund and buy the new device.

  • Does anyone know if a US iPad user can "gift" an app to a korean user running iOS4?

can a US iPad user (v 4.3.5.) gift an application to a Korean user (v. 4.3.5) and visa versa?  We wanted to use both US and Korean apps on the iPads in both countries if possible but did not know what the restrictions were or if it was technically possible.

You can only gift apps to people who have an account in the same country.
In order to have an account in a given country's iTunes Store, you need to a) have a valid address in that country, b) have a credit card billed to that address or a gift card purchased in that country and c) be physically located in that country at the time of purchase.

  • Buying an iPad as a gift for someone in the UK (advice)

    Hi,
I'm planning on buying my brother an iPad for his birthday but he lives in the UK. The US iPad works out $200 cheaper than the UK version so I was thinking of sending him one from over here.
What potential problems would he face if I did that? He's not very technologically minded and don't want him stuck with problems he can't solve!
Thanks in advance for your help.

Per item 2.4 of the following I would say yes.
