IPad as remote for Apple TV First Gen

After installing the "Remote" app on my iPad 2, the instructions then direct you to "turn on Home Sharing on your apple tv." There is no such option on my apple tv settings.
Am I even able to control my old apple tv with an iPad?
Please advise.

Ok thanks, that worked.
But you have to do in order, otherwise apple tv will not show iPad as an option to add.
1. Install Remote app on iPad
2. On Remote app, go to Settings (gear icon) and "add library". A 4-number code will be displayed that you will use in step 3
3. In Apple TV menu, go Settings - General - Remotes. You should see your iPad listed. Select yout iPad on menu, then enter 4-number code that is displayed on iPad.
note: if you try to perform step 3 before step 2, the apple tv will not recognize the iPad, and you'll get really frustrated.

  • How to pair a new remote for Apple TV First Gen Without the Old Remote?

We bought the first generation apple tv when it first came out. When we got it, it came with the old small plastic remote. A few years back we lost the plastic remote and decided to one of the new metal remotes but 1 problem. We can pair the new remote with the old apple tv without the old remote.
If anyone knows a work around to this problem... that would be great. Thanks.

Your Apple TV may have become paired with another remote. Hold the remote close to and pointed at the Apple TV, hold down the menu and Rewind buttons together for 6 seconds or until you see a broken chain icon on screen.

Only if you've already setup home-sharing on ATV and both are on the same network.
The remote app is available from the App Store

  • IPad continuously asking for Apple iD

iPad continuously asks for apple iD password even when entered correctly

Try typing password really slow make sure there are a capital letter and a number somewhere in your password
If that doesn't work try changing your password to something easier.

  • How long should you leave your iPad 2 on for it's first charge

how long you your iPad be on for it's first charge

You don't have to charge it up to 100% on the first or every charge, nor run it down to empty everytime before you re-charge it. This page just recommends going through at least one charge cycle per month :
For proper reporting of the battery’s state of charge, be sure to go through at least one charge cycle per month (charging the battery to 100% and then completely running it down).

  • IPad startup asks for apple id that is an email

iPad startup asks for apple id that is an email but my existing apple id is not an email address.  When I try to change my existing apple id to my email, the system won't change it so I'm stuck.  I can't complete the iPad startup without entering my apple id but I can't change it to an email address like the iPad expects.  Any suggestions?

To be honest i'm not sure but i think the apple id is always an email address and you can't use anything else try putting @me.com after the apple id you have

  • Lost remote for Apple Tv 1st generation.

    Hi,
I've lost my remote for my 1st generation Apple TV and can no longer navigate through the menus.  Can the 1st generation remotes still be purchased. If so where??!  If not can a different remote work to navigate through the menus of a 1st generation Apple TV.  I've tried a 2nd generation remote and it did not navigate through the menus but did make the light on the 1st generation Apple TV come on when I tried to push the buttons.  I've downloaded remote apps. on my iPhone, but without the remote for the 1st generation Apple TV I was not apple to navigate through the Apple TV menus to sync up the iPhone remote app.  Any assistance would be helpful.
    Thanks
    Kevin

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Actually you can use the remote app to control the first generation Apple TV, but you'd need the supplied remote to set it up.
You don't need the first generation remote, the remote for the second generation model will control either model.
So assuming you still have your remote for your second generation Apple TV you could configure the first generation Apple TV with it to work with the remote app on the iPad and not need to buy a new remote at all. But if you do buy a new remote, the one sold in the store will be just fine.

  • ITunes looses photo sync settings for Apple TV (1st gen.)

Since the update to the new Photo app on my Mac, iTunes forgets the photo sync settings for my Apple TV (1st. generation, 160 GB HDD).
Every time I open the photo section of the Apple TV sync settings, all the options are turned off. Then I mark a couple of albums and sync the Apple TV >> all album appear on the Apple TV.
But after closing and re-opening iTunes in the photo settings everything is unmarked again. So on every following sync the photos on the Apple TV are easily erased :-( Resync them to the Apple TV takes hours (>30'000 photos!).
All the other sync settings in iTunes remain intact.
    Environment:
    - MacBook Pro Retina 15" with the latest SW (Mac OS, iTunes, Photo App, etc.)
    - Apple TV 1st gen 160 GB HDD

Restarting iTunes resolves the issue in the majority of cases, if it doesn't my second guess would be your security software.
What really seems strange here is that there have been no updates since well before Xmas, so after initially setting it up, the first update would have brought you right up to the most recent (and indeed the very last) .
Agh, how silly of me, I see it's iTunes you have updated.
If that's about all you've changed, you might want to try reinstalling iTunes and bonjour.
