IPad Backup Question

So I owned an iPad 2 32GB model. It had roughly 6GB of songs, apps, etc and 20GB of pictures (from iPhoto)... I'm looking to upgrade to the iPad '3' 16GB model.. My question is can I restore it from the backup of my old model.. and then choose not to sync the pictures unto it so it's not overcapacitied? If you understand..

In that case you should be fine. Settings, app data, etc, are exactly the things that are part of the backup.
To make the restore from backup smoother, I would suggest reducing synced items on the current iPad to below 15 GB. It will avoid a "not enough space to sync" error essage when you're setting up the new one.
Enjoy it!

A few questions about iPad Backups via iTunes......
    1. How can I delete all of the iPad and iPhone backups on my MacBook Pro? Where are they stored in Finder? I want to delete all previous backups hen create a new fresh one....
    2. My devices backup when they connect to my MBP before they sync, as per normal. Is it possible to exclude certain files from the backup? For example, I have some movies on my iPad which I load on and play via CineXplayer. I dont want these large movie files to be included in my Backup yet again - how can I set it so that these files from CineXplayer are excluded from the backup?

the following support article is about iPod Touch and iPhone, but the same principles apply to iPad: [_*About backups*_|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766].

  • Where is the ipad backup kept

where is the ipad backup kept

    <Profile>\<AppData>\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup
And on the assumption that your supplementary question is "It's taking up too much room on my C:\ drive, how do I move it?"...
You can redirect <Profile>\<AppData>\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup to a folder on another drive using NTFSLink (shell ext., might only work on XP) or Junction (cmd line tool).
In essence you move the existing folder to a new location, create an empty folder where the old one used to be, then get the operating system to link the two togther and silently redirect any file operation on the old location through to the new one.

  • How to restore new ipad air from old ipad backup using itunes.

I'm trying to get all of the content from an old iPad onto new iPad air. I backed up the old iPad on iTunes, and when I plug in the new iPad air, it prompted that I must first update the software in order to back it up. I updated the software, but now I'm not sure how to get the old iPad backup onto the new iPad because it isn't seeing the new iPad as brand new anymore. How to I transfer the old stuff onto the new one after updating the software? I'm using iTunes for Windows.

    Hey jh232808,
Thanks for the question. If I understand correctly, you want to restore a backup to a new iOS device. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help the issue.
Back up and restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch using iCloud or iTunes - Apple Support
    Restore using iTunes
Use these steps if you have a new iOS device, or you need to to restore after a factory reset:
Connect your device to the computer that has your backup.
Install the latest version of iTunes.
Choose File > Devices > Restore from Back up.
You won't be able to install a backup that uses a later version of iOS than the device you're trying to install it on. Find out why.
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
    Have a good one,

  • How can I backup my iPad to another iPad backup on my same account.  They're both listed on my list of backups, but it won't let me choose to backup to the one I want on my other iPad which I no longer have.  But I specifically want the pictures

How can I backup my iPad to another iPad backup I have on my same iCloud account.  The old one is totally gone.  Both backups are listed on my iCloud account. So is there any way I can backup the one I have now to the other one.  I really just want the pictures that are in the old backup.  I have tried resetting and erasing all settings and data on the one I still have, but when I go to restore by iCloud;  it only gives me the choice of restoring the same iPad.  Then in iCloud>storage>backup, I'm still not able to choose which backup to backup to.  I've even tried deleting the backup to the iPad I still have, then resetting all setting and data on the iPad, hoping that in resetting up the iPad it would give me the option to backup to my old iPad.  But it doesn't.  It still has memory of the backup of my newer iPad.
    I JUST WANT THE PICTURES!!!
    Thank you!!!

You now need to get your pictures back! The similar to you, after I updated my iPad Mini, I can't get my some files on device. I tried many ways, fortunately, I got a tool from http://tinyurl.com/Data-Recovery-iPhone to help me recover lost files easily! It supports iPhone, iPad, iPod, etc iOS devices!

  • How do i transfer ipad backup to another computer

I'm having a new Mac soon to replace the current windows computer now. I have been syncing my iPad with this computer and wonder if I can transfer my iPad Backup to the new Mac so I can sync my ipad with it. Anyone has an idea?

This article is pretty easy to follow and contains the steps needed to transfer your iPad content to the new computer.
    http://www.tcgeeks.com/how-to-sync-ipad-to-a-new-computer-ipad-tips/
If you want to just transfer the iPad backup to new computer here is where it is located.
    Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/
    Windows XP: \Documents and Settings\(username)\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
    Windows Vista: \Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
The information is from this article

This thread also discusses how to move the iPad content to another computer.

tried defining the iPad as new - the same problem. started it in recovery mode - the same

    The definition of insanity.....
Does it ask for the old device by name?  How do you know it isn't restored?   Have you completed setup and checked on the device?
Are you using the same iTunes account and Apple ID?
On your iTunes account, Open preferences, go to devices tab
Look in the box for a backup of your old device.    Is there a backup?
If there is no backup, you have nothing to restore.

If not then you might be better off asking in the iTunes For Windows forum, you may be more likely to get better help there.

  • Help need to recover corrupted ipad backup

  • *Really* cannot find iPad backup file

I have tried for weeks to find the iPad backup file. I run Itunes on Windows XP. I've checked the support page which says it should be in:
    # Windows XP: \Documents and Settings\(username)\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
You might not believe this: I don't even have the "Application Data"folder!
I know backup is taking place because I successfully restored my iPad a few days ago.
The only thing I should mention is that my media folder is J:\itunes_folder
and my iTune home is J:\itunes_home.
I've checked both of those directories and nothing looks like a backup file.
Does anyone have any clues on where the backups are or might be?
    Thanks in advance,
    Sandy.

Not sure if you've figured the answer already but will post anyway:
The "Application Data" folder in XP is hidden by default, all you need to do is enable the hidden files and folders: Go to My Computer - Tools - Folder Options - View - "Show hidden files and folders" from the list
After that you will be able to navigate to the desired folder and backup what you need to.
    Good luck

  • How can I take my iPhone & iPad backups from my iMac at home with me while travelling using my Macbookair (128Gb SSD) with an ext. HD?

How can I take my iPhone & iPad backups from my iMac at home with me while travelling using my Macbookair (128Gb SSD) with an ext. HD? I want to continue to back up my devices including those of my wife while travelling without using the cloud and not returing home for several weeks.
    Any ideas or solutions?
    Thanks for your help.

You can use any Mac with a recent copy of iTunes to back up an iPhone or iPad. It doesn't have to be the one you usually synch with, so long as you don't let it try to do a synch.
Just take fresh backups on the MBA. As for how to get the backups onto the external drive, I'll have to leave that to others; I've never tried.
