Ipad cellular connectivity.

I am new to this so may be asking a really silly question. I have bought an ipad min with cellular connectivity. I have not yet bought a contract as I will be using the ipad mainly at home and at work where there is WiFi. I intend to get a (chceap) contract for the times away from home/ work but don't know how the ipad will 'know' to use WiFi rather than use up the contract. I don't ant to end up going way over the limit and find myself with a large unexpected bill.
Incidentally I don't know what IOS I should be choosing or whether it matters.
Any advice would be welcomed.
Thanks

Here's the "Cellular Data" section of the iPad User Manual.  That should answer your questions:
You should always choose the latest iOS.  To make sure you have it, go to Settings > General > Software Update.

  • Why I am forced to use wifi instead of cellular connection?

I got very slow wifi connection tethered from another cellular connection to workaround this annoying feature that I cannot download os updates etc. Directly and fast with my ipad cellular connection. Why doesn't ios give that option?

Apple policy - probably for many reasons.
Cellular connection plans often have monthly bandwidth limits.
Hitting the limit might either result in hefty charges or the speed to be reduced to a trickle.
Anyhting over 50 Mb will not download over a cellular connection on iOS.
On iOS7 the cellular download threshold seems to be lifted to 100Mb over a cellular connection. (Over The Air - OTA)

  • Why has my ipad lost connectivity to the AT&T cellular data network after upgrading to iOS 8.1.2?  My iPad is model #MD367LL/A, 32 GB WIFI + Cellular, about 2-1/2 years old.

Why has my ipad lost connectivity to the AT&T cellular data network after upgrading to iOS 8.1.2?  My iPad is model #MD367LL/A, 32 GB WIFI + Cellular, about 2-1/2 years old. It;s been working perfectly up until now.  I have no problem on my home WIFI, or through personal hotspot working through my iPhone 5.
I have worked with AT&T, replaced the SIM card with a new one, and done a backup/restore to factory settings, all with the same result that when I turn Cellular
Data on, with or without Enable LTE, it goes into "searching" mode, or reports "no service".  My iPhone 5 works perfectly on iOS 8.1.2, on Cellular.  I've browsed the blogs and have tried Apple's suggested fix, all to no result.
Oddly enough, every once in a while I do get connected to the network for a short ime (minutes), but it always returns to "searching".
I've filed a report with Apple, along with a request that they contact me, but no results yet.
    Help? (and thank you).

Hello razmee209.  Thank you for your response.  I spent the better part of yesterday working with Apple Support.  They tried their best, to include backing up photos to my HP laptop, backing up the iPad to iCloud, then resetting the iPad in total.  Same problem.  I restored from the cloud to recover my apps, same problem.
AT&T installed a new sim card - same problem.  I spent time with AT&T Support yesterday, too.  In both cases, (Apple and AT&T) the support techs who worked with me were extremely polite, courteous and helpful to the best of their abilities, but I think the problem lies deeper, and nobody at Apple is admitting they have a problem with iOS 8, that I'm aware of.
I didn't have this issue before I upgraded to iOS 8.1.2.
Everything else with the iPad works fine:  WIFI, Personal Hotspot, email, all my apps, etc.
In browsing the web for this issue I see that many other folks have the same problem.  I filed a report with Apple this morning, requesting that they contact me, but no word yet.  I was going to go to iPhone 6, and had been considering the iPad Air 2, but I see reports of this problem with those units as well.
At this point I don't think I'll be spending any more money with Apple, at least not till this issue is resolved.
Thanks again for your response and suggestions.

  • No cellular connectivity on my iPad 2 after iOS 8.0.2 update

Since the update to iOS 8 I have had no cellular connectivity on my iPad 2.  The updates  8.0.1 and 8.0.2 haven't fixed things.  I can use Wifii but when that isn't available I have no internet connection. Can anyone advise me what to do, please?

    I favor "nuking it"! ... :-) ...
That's what I call restoring it to "factory fresh condition" - in the same condition that Apple sells the iPad 2s TODAY in their online store!
Use iTunes to restore your iOS device to factory settings
Be sure to do your backup first.

  • Cellular connection to mini iPad in uk

I have just bought a mini iPad cellular and want to know if I can run a dual sim from my iPhone? I am on Vodafone
    Thanks

What do you mean by "run a dual sim"?
You can provide a cellular data connection to your iPad from your iPhone via Personal Hotspot (internet tethering) if activated on your iPhone account.

  • HT4623 After ios update on my ipad mini i am unable to connect to internet via cellular connection

i Have update ios 7.0.2 on my ipad mini. But after update of ios 7.0.2 i am unable to connect to internet via cellulau connection. Cellular connection appears on my screen but i get error as "Could not activate cellular data network you are not subscribed to a cellular data service". Cellular connection was working prior to ios 7.0.2 update. Please help.

    GOT MINE FIXED -
THE 7.0.3 update reported my iPhone as LOST or STOLEN  to Verizon.
They suspended my iPhone service immediately (as I would expect them to) and THAT is why I couldn't get on.
Called Verizon wireless - they restored me in 30 seconds - EVERYTHING WORKS AGAIN.
They said "we've been doing this ALL MORNING."
Hope this works for others, too!

  • Cellular connectivity issue with iPad 4th gen

    Hi folks,
I'm currently running iOS 7 beta 2 since it was made available for tablets on Monday. I am having a major cellular connectivity issue with Rogers. My iPhone 5 is also running iOS 7 beta 2 and has no issue with cellular connectivity (also on Rogers's network).
On my iPad, I'm having full or almost full reception but data doesn't work at all. Tried reboot and hard reboot, resets of wireless settings and nothing fixed my issue.
Is it related to iOS 7 beta 2? Is anyone having a similar issue?
    Btw, model is iPad3,5.
    Thanks!

  • IPad (3rd gen) loses cellular connection (ATT) every 20 - 25 seconds

My iPad (3rd gen, iOS 8.2) works fine on WiFi, but its cellular connection cycles between "searching"  and a strong signal (5 dots) every 20 to 25 seconds.  It's been doing it for a week now, at several different locations.  I've restarted the iPad, removed and reinserted the SIM chip, and reset network settings.  None of those helped.  Any ideas on what I should do next?

  • Poor Cellular Connection after iOS 8 Upgrade

    Hi Apple Support,
I have upgraded my iPhone5 to iOS 8 and after the upgrade i am getting very poor Cellular connectivity.
Talking in terms of the "4 small Circles" adjacent to Carrier name . it used to be all 4 circles always.
but after the upgrade its either one or two only....
and due to this there is frequent call drops
    Please help to resolve this

I have been to Apple store twice now on this issue. We have tried all of the above suggestions-- restore, network reset, re-installing SIM card-- and the problem always returns. The Genius Bar tech told me the IOS update brought out a latent problem hidden in the firmware -- in other words, it is a problem caused by Apple, but not everyone experiences this problem. The tech also told me there was nothing more that could be done, short of buying a new ipad. I asked about going back to the earlier IOS version but she said Apple will not allow that at this point. So it sounds to me like a "forced obsolescence" thing that Apple has inflicted on me: they admit their update brought out a problem, previously unmanifested, which had always been lurking in their firmware-- but their solution is that I need to ditch my ipad 2 and buy a new ipad. I never had this type of issue before the upgrade. the problem is more of a nuisance/inconvenience than anything else, because it can be rectified by powering down every few hours, so it's not worth it to me to spend hundreds on a new ipad. And anyway if this is an example of their customer service I'm not sure I will stay with Apple when it finally is time to buy a new tablet.

  • My cellular connection (swedish 3 operator) does not work after update to iOs 8.3

    Hello svenakealb,
It appears you are unable to connect with cellular networks using your iPad. The following article provides troubleshooting steps for this issue, which you may find helpful:
If you can't connect to a cellular network or cellular data - Apple Support
Get help with No Service or Searching, cellular network, and 4G LTE issues on your iPhone or iPad (cellular model).
If you see No Service or Searching
If you see No Service or Searching on your device, or can't connect to a cellular network or cellular data, follow these steps:
Check your coverage area to make sure you're in an area with cellular network coverage.
If you can't connect to a cellular network, make sure cellular data is on in Settings > Cellular.
If you're traveling internationally, make sure your device is set up for data roaming. Go to Settings > Cellular > Data Roaming.
    Restart your iPhone or iPad.
Check for a Carrier Settings Update.
Remove the SIM card then reinsert it. If the SIM card is damaged, worn, or bent, or doesn't fit in the SIM tray, contact your carrier.
Try another location. If possible, see if other devices are able to connect to your carrier's network in that location.
    Contact your carrier to:
Verify that your account is active and in good standing.
Make sure there are no outages in your area.
Check that your device is not blocked from receiving cellular services and set up with the right data plan.
Update your iPhone or iPad to the latest version of iOS.
If you can connect to 3G but not 4G LTE
If you can connect your iPhone or iPad to 3G but not 4G LTE, make sure your device is compatible with LTE. Go to Settings > Cellular > Enable LTE. Identify your iPhone and compare its model number with the list of supported LTE carriers for your country location. Or identify your iPad and compare its model number with the list of supported LTE carriers for your country location. LTE options might vary depending on your carrier's network.
Thank you for contributing to Apple Support Communities.

  • I have lost my verizon icon and cannot connect to a cellular connection what can I do?

I Have verizion as my cellular carrier. I downloaded the last update from Apple for my iPad Air now I can no longer get a cellular connection because I don not have a cellular icon. (the verizon bill is paid and current) can anyone help?

First thing I would do is reset the iPad. Press and hold both the Home button and the Sleep/Wake button continuously until the Apple logo appears. Then release the button and let the device restart. You will not lose data doing this. It's like a computer reboot.
If that doesn't help I would contact Verizon.

  • A way to have the new ipad automatically connect to Wi-Fi or AT&T?

Is there a way to have the new ipad automatically connect to Wi-Fi or AT&T depending on what is available?  For instance, I have the new ipad connected to the wi-fi in my office.  While driving to work I connect using the AT&T network.  When I walk into my office it does not automatically switch over to wi-fi.  I have to physically go into settings and turn cellular off so that it doesn't use my AT&T data while I'm in a location that can use wi-fi.  I am curious because my phone (not iphone) is connected to my wi-fi also and it automatically connects when I walk into my office so all my calls are free and then when the wi-fi signal is not in range is automatically goes back to the cellular network so I don't ever lose coverage.  Can I set up the ipad to do that?

That is how your ipad is designed to work.
Maybe try resetting network settings. If all else fails you can do a back up and restore as new to be certain there is no issue with your software.

  • Can I use my blackberry as a modem for my iPad cellular?

I'm not sure on how the iPad cellular uses its 3g functionality.
Do I need to insert my phone sim card into the iPad everytime I want to connect to the web using the 3g network?
    or
Can the iPad use my blackberry phone as a modem to connect to the internet?
(my blackberry is 3g and has modem functionality)
    Thanks.

If your device supports mobile hotshot (which is not a modem) then you can use that.  But if you are using an 8520 you do not have that feature.

  • I'm struggling with iOS6 and iTunes [new iPad Cellular]

Last night I connect my new-ipad cellular and was informed to update iOS6. And yes, I did agree to update. After iTunes downloaded and it started updating software + firmware as usual. I think there should be no problem. After finishing updating firmware, I received a notification from iTunes: your ipad is restarting... But in the end, nothing happened. My iPad stayed silent. Power button and Home button have no effect now. I tried to plug ipad to my mac again and restart iTunes. The same notification, saying that my iPad is in recovery mode and I need to restore. This loop never ends. And my iPad doesn't work again.
Please tell me what is the problem. if there is an issue of iOS6, software and firmware, please fix it NOW.
I want my iPad back to work.
All of my data was lost and I cannot use my iPad anymore. What a disaster!!!
    PLEASE HELP ME!!!

Restart the Mac and hold down Command+Option+R. Choose to reinstall OS X. The version of OS X your Mac came with will be installed.
