IPad charger sparked, started to catch on fire?!?!

I just got my ipad2 a week ago to the day. I get up and plug in the charger that it came with and all of a sudden it sparks and starts to catch on fire. I freaked out immediately and unplugged it only to find the prongs are scorched and the one looks like it started to melt. I have NEVER had this happen before with anything. I plugged it into the same wall outlet all week and it never did this, we've been in this house over ten years and never had anything like this happen. I was so scared the house was going to catch on fire. What should I do? The closest apple store is an hour and a half away (which I don't mind going to) I'm just not sure if they will replace my charger or if I'll have to buy a new one. I can't find any info of is happening to other people so maybe it was my outlet but like I said we have never had problems like this before.

they will give you a new charger on the spot.  would probably do it through the mail if you want.  If you decide to make the trip, take the pad along and let them check it while you are there.  If there is any damage, or if they suspect damage, I would expect them to react properly.
That would be a very scarey experience.  Glad you didn't burn the house down.

  • Ipad, Music button starts the app, then fires it up, then goes blank blank, then closes, any ideas please??

Any ideas why the music tab, opens the app, no contenet, then closes the app?
    Thanks, it only started today?

It could very well be that you now have a corrupt song in iTunes and that could be the problem, but if the Music app is not performing as expected, start with this. Quit the app completely and restart your iPad.
Go to your home screen and double tap the home button. Tap and hold down on the Music app icon in the task bar until it wiggles. Tap the minus sign on the app to close it. Tap the screen above the task bar.
Restart the iPad and try again.
If the music app still isn't working properly, reboot your iPad.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.

Honestly, I don't think that they have any other way of accessing anything on the iPad than any other user has. The Apple Store genius will just put the device through the standard troubleshooting steps - in your case probably try to restore the device to factory settings and if that doesn't work, then they will make some sort of offer for a replacement assuming that your iPad is still under warranty.
If I'm not mistaken they will probably erase the device in order to try to "fix" it. That's what restoring to factory settings does. I assumed that you were concerned about losing data - but if you are concerned that they are going to see something that you don't want them to see or access, I'm pretty sure that's not going to happen.

  • MC model catches on fire while charging

This didn't happen to me but my friend's ipod which i use allot caught on fire. My friend was charging his MC ipod touch and it caught on fire, it actually burst into flames and melted the screen, he had to pick it up with tongs and put it in a dumpster (then the dumpster caught on fire, minor fire). I was just wondering can he get a replacement or something? or can he not since it is old, prob out of warranty, and that he threw it away so he wouldn't catch his house on fire

I had a problem similar, not as extreme as catching on fire.  I called the nearest Apple store, so I could have a single point of contact throughout my product replacement. This might help before calling AppleCare.

  • My ipad won't start up. I downloaded iTunes on my pc while my iPad was charging - could this have caused the problem? I don't want to restore to factory settings and lose data. Any ideas or solutions? Thanks, Linda

My ipad won't start up.  I downloaded iTunes on my pc while my iPad was charging - could this have caused the problem? I don't want to restore to factory settings and lose data. I also recently successfully paired my ipad with a bluetooth keypad. Any ideas or solutions? Thanks, L

FYI, your iPad will charge much faster if you plug it directly into an electrical outlet.
When doing the reset, as Jackkcc suggests, make sure you let go of both buttons fairly promptly after the apple image appears, then wait another 10 seconds or so for the iPad to start up.  Note that a reset does not alter any data or settings.

  • My I Pad is not charging, it started after the battery went dead while i was playing a game, when i tried charging it all it does is flash the apple icon and it switches off again, help Pliiz

my Ipad is not charging, it started after the battery died while i was playing a game, when i tried charging its only flashing the apple icon and it switches off again, help PLIIZ

    Not charging
    1. Reset iPad
    2. Try another wall socket
    3. Try another cable (make sure it's an original Apple cable)
    4. Try another charger (make sure it's an original Apple charger)
    5. Clean Lightning port with compress air or new paint brush

  • Ipad won't start after updating to ios 8.1.3

My iPad was working without issue prior to updating to IOS 8.1.3 yesterday. After updating, not only would the ipad not start, it produced intermittent tones. The tone heard when device is plugged into an outlet for charging.
I attempted to turn the device off but it would not respond. Afterwards, a reboot was attempted numerous times by holding the home and sleep buttons down simultaneously. Once the Apple logo appeared the buttons were released, the logo disappeared but the device remained dormant.
While connected to iTunes and emitting the connection tones, periodically the splash screen would appear momentarily then turn off. I was able to swipe the screen on one of these occasions. The device worked properly until it was turned off after use at which time it would not turn on again and remains unable to turn on. It does not respond to attempts to turn it off or rebooting.
Prior to the update I did backup the device in case something like this would occur. Since I appear to have exhausted all my options to get the device to work, I feel the only remaining option is to restore it to factory default. I would appreciate advice from anyone who may either have experienced this same issue and found a resolution, or can provide thoughts on how I should proceed please.
If I proceed with a restore to factory default followed by a restore of the most recent backup, will I lose any data during this process? This will be my first time to erase a device so any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. I would, of course, prefer an alternative resolution. Thanks in advance for your help.

    Hello, Tony.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
I understand that your iPad no long starts after an update and you have a backup for your iPad.  It sounds like you will need to restore the device to factory and then will have the option to access your backup after the restore complete.  The only information that should be missing would be after the backup was completed until the device is restored.  I have included the steps for going through this process in the articles below.
If you can't update or restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
Back up and restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch using iCloud or iTunes

  • IPad won't start.

Touch pad is not working and I cannot reset ipad.  What can I do?

This morning my ipad won't start. No response at all. Have tried all the tricks mentioned on this site (various combination of holding the buttons for a long time), but no response.
Connected to the usual PC with itunes, and I can see and hear a reaction from the PC, but I get the message "Device driver not successfully installed".
Pressing the buttons while connected to the PC obviously makes some kind of reaction (connect/disconnect sound from the PC), but still the ipad will not wake up.
    Have charged it for hours.
    Any suggestions?

  • My iPad does not start. What can be the problem

My iPad does not start. What can be the problem

Does anything happens when you try to switch it on ? If not, then assuming that the battery isn't empty (and it can take up to 15 minutes of charging before it will respond), then have you tried a reset ? Press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds, after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • Is it ok to charge an itouch using an ipad charger

Is it ok to charge an itouch (3G or 4G) using an (official) ipad charger. It says yes in the instructions but the itouch gets really hot

When the iPod firs came out, the description of the iPad charger said it was compatible with the iPods.  However, now the description does not include compatibility with the iPod.  See:

  • HT1386 why won't my ipad charge from my computer - my iphone does! and where has my facetime and contacts icons gone?

Why won't my ipad charge from my computer when my iphone does? also where have my facetime and contacts icons gone?

A computer USB port does not provide enough power to charge and run the iPad at the same time but it will charge it if the iPad is turned off.  It will take about four times as long to charge than with the iPad charger.
The Contacts icon may be inside a folder, such as Utilities.
There is no Facetime icon.  Start a Facetime link from a contact.

  • HT201263 Help.  My wife's iPad will not start up.  I updated it two nights ago (Nov 12) to the latest  IOS.  It seemed to update normally. However, today it will not start or give any response.  I tried to do a restore, but it will not let me do that.

Help!!!!!!  My wife's iPad will not start up.  I updated two nights ago to the latest IOS and today it will not do anything.  It is charged and I've tried to access it through itunes to no avail.

From your text, it's difficult to determine if the problem lies with the iPad or the cable.
If the iPad still works, but you're having a problem with the sync, you may want to check all the cables and connections. If the iPad doesn't work (frozen or unresponsive), post and we'll go through the checklist together.

  • Why did my iPad Mini screen start glitching out of no where?!

Why did my iPad Mini screen start glitching out of no where?! Hard reset did not fix issue... Which I could barely see the display at it was.. Please help..

Has the unit EVER been jailbroke?  Has it EVER been dropped?  Did it EVER get excessively wet?  Did you EVER load a pirated developer's version of the IOS?
If "No" to all the above, first try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  It could take well over an hour!  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow the on-screen directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore, go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.  You WILL lose all of your data (game scores, etc,) but, for the most part, you can redownload apps and music without being charged again.  Also, if you have IOS-7, read this.

  • My new ipad charger got electrical short!!

My new ipad charger got kind of electrical short. There were some little explosion sound and spark.
I went to istudio and gave it back. 5 days later they just called me and told me that they wouldn't give me a new charger because this case is not covered.
well, I live in Thailand and i have purchased it since May 8th. The apple care center in Thailand told me that the Office in Singapore denied to give me the new charger.
    What should i do????

It should be covered by the 1 year warranty. Apple's Limited Warranty http://www.apple.com/legal/warranty/ for iPad excludes coverage for damage resulting from accident, disassembly, unauthorized service and unauthorized modifications.
    Look at Apple feedback. http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipad.html
