IPad compression parameters

We use Final Cut Pro 7 - and frequently compress our HD videos we make using Compressor. We use high end HD cameras, etc., and have beautiful results when compressing at, say 20 - 30mbs for display on HD monitors and televisions. We know how to compress for iPod and Apple TV, and various web sizes . . . but what parameters should we be using for the iPad?
I've read it plays up to 2.5mbs??
I hope I'm WRONG, because with fast moving subjects, you'll see a lot of pixelation at that low data rate.
I looked in the Compressor templates, but don't see one for iPad. Anyone know what settings we should be using? Or what's the highest data rate an iPad will play?
Thanks,
Larry

Hey Larry,
Another User has posted his own Compressor settings for iPad encoding here:
http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=888988
Sorenson has already released a iPad codec for use with its Squeeze family of encoding software, so I bet Apple won't be far behind. Kinda surprising they didn't have one ready before the release.
Here is a download of the Sorenson codec:
<http://click.icptrack.com/icp/relay.php?r=15410390&msgid=298711&act=HP8L&c=1639 98&destination=http%3A%2F%2Fpresets.sorensonmedia.com%2Fapi%2FgetPresetXmlDirect %3FpresetId%3D58e7bb23-561c-4c9b-ac40-33d82b628acb>
Please post back here if you find anything else for Compressor.
I am in the hunt myself.
Best of luck.

  • Mp4 from After Effects won't play on iPad Air

I have a series of mp4 vids - some are exported from Premiere, others, After Effects - CS6 Win7 x64.
They all play in iTunes, but the vids from AE won't play on the iPad.  Even when I sync them the iPad identifies them as unplayable.
Any ideas what could cause this?
    Thanks.

There's a million different things that could be wrong with your MP4 settings.  You'll need to post all the compression parameters for anyone to assess the problem properly.
The easiest solution, and one which will give you better quality video anyway, is to use Adobe Media Encoder to do your compressions, rather than After Effects.  It has iPad presets built right in, too.

  • Applet for showing JPEG compression effects

    Hi,
I'm currently trying to code an applet that will load a JPEG (or lossless image maybe), let you choose a new compression (quality) setting and then show the results.
I'm having a really hard time trying to figure out how to get this to work as I know there are firstly a few issues with an Applet and security when it comes to trying to put a loader in. Also how I'm going to either update, or show the new compression (quality) setting is a problem.
The method I think I'm going to use is to first load an image, then have maybe a choice of a few options of quality settings. I think I will then have to save the image with a new filename and reload the new file to show the effects of different compression quality.
I've come accross many examples of image stretching, resizing etc... but none that illustrate Java compression. As you can tell I'm at a bit of a loss, even where to start, so does anyone here have any insight into how I might do this? Any examples out there I could look over to see implementation and get idea's from?
    Thanks for any help.
    Dar.

I think you should be able to do this using the ImageIO functionality.
You'd need to do something like this,
    - get your original image in memory
    - create an ImageOutputStream from a ByteArrayOutputStream
    - set the compression details for the image writer
    - write the image
    - re-read the compressed image via ImageIO
That's a pretty high-level description obviously and leaves you a bit of API reading to do, plus finding how to set the compression parameters (Google and the forum should provide the answer), but it should do just what you want, and you shouldn't need to save the file to the file system, nor do you need any non-standard loaders from the IIO toolkit - the standard JRE includes a JPEG reader/writer.
The main problem (though it may not be an issue in your circumstances) will be that it requires multiple copies of the image in memory at once, and if you're dealing with moderately large images then you can max out on the default heap allocation. Naturally this depends on th image sizes you're dealing with and whether you're in a constrained deployment environment where it's acceptable to ask the user to modify the Java Plug-In control panel (which usually isn't the case).
A workaround may be to ditch the original image after encoding it and reload it once the compression preview is closed, though this obviously has time performance implications which depend on where you're obtaining the image from, etc.

  • Actually -monitor- compression?

On Netware 6.5 -- does anyone know of a way to actually *monitor* file
    compression activity?
The documentation says to do it via SET or MONITOR, but both of these seem to
    only allow setting compression parameters.
Reason for the inquiry is that we have a volume that lost a huge amount of
diskspace overnight. 135GB just gone, only 15GB of that was newly-created
files, small number modified ... but we were doing a migration and 600GB+of
the compressed volume was "accessed" in the copy process. The access includes
uncompressing files prior to copy, but we've never seen this type of space
    disappear during the process before.
So I'm wondering if the 120GB that vanished is compressed files that
decompressed and then continued to eat up space -- but I can't find a wayto
monitor or even log compression activity.
Am I missing something, or is the documentation wrong?

  • Unable to create iPod-playable h.264 files using Compressor

I've been running some video compression work for iPod, and have been able to do "quick & dirty" exports to iPod via QuickTime Pro (standalone & from within FCP).
To get more of a handle on the compression parameters than the default "Export to iPod" setting allows, I have had success using 3'rd party tools, and using customized settings in QuickTime Pro (most excellently discussed in Ken Stone's page here: http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/video_to_ipodstone.html)
So far so good: successfully creating iPod-friendly files that meet the requirements: http://www.apple.com/ipod/specs.html
What I really want to do, though, is create a saved Compressor setting for setting up batches of iPod conversions, and so I don't have to hand-tweak each export in QT Pro.
I am running current version of QT and Compressor, but CANNOT create MPEG 4/h.264 files that will load onto an iPod for the life of me.
Here's how it goes down for some different Compressor settings, with their results:
    1.)
    File format: QT
    File extension: .mov
Video: 320x240 15 fps MPEG-4 Video (note for those playing along at home that there is **no way** to specify h.264 nor "Baseline Low Complexity" in the Compressor dialog)
    Audio: AAC
Result: a quick to encode, plain old MPEG4 file with only so-so quality that will load and play on an iPod
    2.)
    File format: QT
    File extension: .mov
Video: 320x240 15fps h.264 (again: no way to select "Baseline Low Complexity" within Compressor)
    Audio: AAC
Result: Slower to encode, higher quality and smaller file that will NOT load onto an iPod. Error in iTunes states that the file "cannot be played on this iPod"
    3.)
    File format MPEG4
    Extension: mp4
Video: 320x240 15fps Basic (0) ISMA profile, Medium VBR. Note that there is no way to specify h.264
    Audio: 44.1/128 kbps
Results: Same as in #1 above
What I feel I have it boiled down to is that there is some weirdness in Compressor that doesn't connect to the QuickTime compression settings properly. Where you SHOULD be able to specifiy h.264 and Low complexity settings (as you can when using QT Pro) for an MPEG4 file, you cannot in Compressor. Similarly, when specifying h.264 in Compressor, there is no way to specifiy Baseline Low Complexity.
Long post- sorry! I have tried many more iterations than are listed here. I'll spare everyone those, as the examples above I think illustrate my predicament.
    Anyone have any thoughts?
    Thanks-
    John

OK.. first, thanks for the reply. Sort have had given up on finding an answer here and just checked back here yesterday. Lo and behold I do see the iPod setting on a newer machine- and started to look into why exactly it isn't on the main workstation here.
Turns out that you don't get updates unless the software is registered. Maybe it's just me, but I never bother with product registations (until today I guess).
So a word up to anyone else who does the same. You won't get FCP automatically updated unless you register.
I assume after I update everything I should be AOK
Also- I should have marked your reply as SOLVING my problem- but my first instinct was to say to myself "Of course I'm using current versions- what kind of jamoke does this guy think I am, anyway?" So, feeling very charitable, I marked your reply as merely helpful.
And now I have to eat my words! Sorry about that. Guess you'll get good karma points somehow. Maybe I'll look into that some more while I'm downloading updates this AM.
    Thanks again!

  • Error when merging large clips in QuickTime

I am trying to merge two 2-hour clips into a 4-hour clip in QuickTime (OS X 10.7.2). If I combine very short clips and export for iPad all works.  But the long clip combination generates an error "The operation not supported for this media." What is the problem? Is there a size limit I don't know about?  I can create the large (4 hour) film in Quicktime and I can watch it.  But I can't export the result.  Anyone have an answer?  [The two long clips were generated by HandBrake for Apple TV2 and the clips work everywhere they should.]
Thanks for any advice or help.

What is the encoded resolution and file size of each file? While HandBrake generates iPad files using "Large File" addressing, the QT X player may or may not be programmed to use this mode for smaller resolutions based on the contextually adaptive nature of the preset. Just a guess, but it is possible the QT X player may refuse to "export" the content if the target file is projected to exceed 4 GBs or exceeds the available memory required to perform the processing of the files.
If true, then depending on the original source files' compression format(s) and apps available, I might try one of the following:
    1) Create a merged "reference" file containing the two source files using QT 7 Pro or create a single "merged" file from the two source files in a single wrapper and then use HandBrake to make a single conversion/export to the target iPad compression format.
    2) Use QT 7 Pro or MPEG Streamclip to save the data in the two M4V files to a single MOV file (without recompressing the data) and checking to see if this file can be imported/managed by iTunes for use on your iPad.
    3) Try a lower resolution export from QT X to see if this obviates the error message.

  • How do I convert a Quicktime file into an MPG2 in Compressor?

Every time I try to export my movie as an MPG2 in FCP, it locks up on me.
So I exported the movie as a regular Quicktime file in FCP and now I'm wondering what all the steps are to make the file into an MPG2 so that I can burn it to a DVD in DVD Studio Pro.

Just open Compressor and import the QT file.
Click on the 'Settings' button and choose a preset that matches your source meda format and gives you the compression parameters you want to use.
Click on the 'Destination' buttons for each and tell it where to send the file.
Change the 'Output file name'(s) if you wish.
    Hit 'Submit'
The Compressor Help menu will give you plenty of info on options available.

  • Better Photoshop integration for exported jpegs

    Hi
Jpegs exported by LR have to be saved with new compression parameters if opened & then worked on in Photoshop. This can be very annoying & time consuming when working with numerous files which need a minor correction (such as dodging & burning which I would also like to see as part of LR) in Photoshop but which are not worthy of creating Tiffs or PSDs as intermediaries. Saving with new parameters cannot be automated with a Photoshop action (I've tried).
I would also like more options regarding the embedding of previews etc as per Photoshop (Mac, PC, Full size, none ?) to appear in the Export Dialogue Box.
Minor irritations on an absolutely fabulous program !

Color profiles, metadata or some such thing. There is a known issue where Preview will not work with images when they contain such data, but not always. Depends on which kinds of information are stored.

  • Why was I only able to sent 5 photos by email?

I was only able to email five photos on my iPad mini.  Why

Mailing is limited to max. five photos at a time - probably to prevent the size of the mail from exceeding the limits on the server.
The iPad User Guide is not very clear about the limits, it only says:  http://manuals.info.apple.com/MANUALS/1000/MA1595/en_US/ipad_user_guide.pdf
    Share photos, videos, and more
You can send photos, videos, locations, contact info, and voice memos. The size limit of attachments is determined by your service provider—iPad compresses photo and video attachments if necessary.

  • No use for tuner - Is MSI PVS necessary?

I have decided not to use the TV tuner on my TV@nyshere-Master card.  Do I need to have MSI PVS installed for other capture programs to work off the composite or SVHS inputs?
Can the Radio be installed without the TVtuner part of the software?
I have basically gotten everything to work but the PVS software caused some problems.  It seems that WinDVD Creator which came with my card works well and is more stable, though it does not seem to have the many compression parameters that  PVS has.
Is there any other capture software that can be recommended?
It seems, except for the PVS software, this card is quite good.  I just want to use it as a capture card for analog video!
    Any suggestions appreciated,
    Thanks,
    BMann

The card works great as long as you don`t use MSIPVS.
for the radio all you need is MSIRadio and as long as you don`t use the tuner any capture program works. It`s the tuner that is more problematic as only some progs can work with it.
I personally use it with VirtualVCR and the DScaler DirectShow deinterlacer plugin and capture over Composite / SVHS is great. The image from the tuner is good but depends very much on the signal.

    Hi All,

Edit: Never mind, I was wrong, it doesn't. (don't know where I heard that).
You weren't wrong.  Photoshop DOES extract and reuse the JPEG quality level you saved an image with previously as the default for the next save, as long as the image was previously saved from Photoshop.
But since JPEG quality isn't really just a simple number under the covers, but a complex combination of several compression factors, it can't always be reduced to a simple "Photoshop equivalent" number, if the image is from a source other than a previous Photoshop save.
During its own saves, Photoshop simplifies the selection of the multiple compression parameters down to a single number between 1 and 10 or 1 and 12 (depending on which save function you use).
The answer to Sham is this:  You can't expect to get a single quality "factor" for all JPEG files from every source.  As an example, the parameters used to compress a JPEG file in your camera may not correspond to any of Photoshop's numeric values.
Paul's script looks like the best answer you're going to get, short of finding a full-on JPEG analysis application somewhere.

  • Export Sequences for DVD/Continuous Play

    Hello fine folks,
I've just finished my opus in FCP. It's 1 hour 45 minutes.
I edited it in 18 sequences. Now, I'm exporting into iDVD, and I want it be able to played continuously, as one long movie.
Or, of course, selectable by chapter (sequence).
Do I need to prepare my export files in FCP in a special way, or can iDVD handle it with regular (no compression) QT files?
Would you recommend I use DVD SP for this, as I have both (but am more familiar with iDVD).

    Hello John,
you'll need to place your 18 sequences in a "Master Sequence" and add chapter markers for each chapter (sequence). Next export the movie to QT movie (do not use QT conversion). Make sure you check "self contained" and "include chapter markers".
Now import the QT movie into an iDVD project. In preferences, "Automatically create chapter sub-menu" should be checked.
Make sure you follow "The Rules of Chapter Markers":
    - No chapter markers on or within 2 seconds of a transition.
    - No chapter markers within 2 seconds of the beginning or the end of the movie.
Would you recommend I use DVD SP for this, as I have both
The route via DVDSP gives you the possibility to do the MPEG-2 compression in Compressor, meaning you'll have greater control over compression parameters, thus improving video quality on your finished DVD.
    hope this helps
