Ipad deletes photo albums

Question

It is my understanding that to get photos from a computer to my ipad, I have to put them in one folder and upload that folder. From there, if I want separate albums, I click "edit", "add to". I did that and had my albums set the way I wanted. When I plugged in my ipad later, I wanted to simply add more photos to that original "ipad" folder still keeping all the albums I created before intact. Instead it ereased all my photos and started over, (even though it was the same exact folder I used the first time) which mean I lost all the albums I had created before. Any way to prevent this? I can't keep creating albums everytime I want to add a few photos from my computer.  Thanks!

i will try the second level folders again. Last time i tried, they didn't show up either, but I only tried two photos in one folder. The photos I'm using originated on my computer, not the ipad, so it is just a copy of a folder that I upload through itunes, then sort the images into albums. Those are the albums that disappeared....well, the album itself didn't disappear, but everything in it did, even though I didn't remove those images from the initial sync folder.
