IPad for college use.

Would an iPad be good for college use?

You will be surprised just how much you use the iPad...goes every where...so go for the largest storage you can afford.  You will need it with text books.

  • Macbook Air and iPad for College/ General Use?

Hi all, I've recently gotten a tax rebate to the tune of £1500 pounds and since I'm returning to college in September I'd like to purchase a MacBook Air in order to have a way to take down notes in a far more efficient form. I currently own a 2010 iMac so I can used that for storage and entertainment meaning the MacBook doesn't need to be anything special in terms of performance.
I currently have two options that I'm interested in, buy an 11 inch MacBook Air (Don't need the 13 if I'm honest) and I'll have enough money to buy an iPad (for use as a Filofax/ E-Reader/ something to prat about on).
OR I could sink the money into a MacBook Pro (putting extra to it of course) and get more performance.
Or maybe there's a third option that I've missed? Any help would be appreciated and thank you in advance.

Seriously, look at the specs and price...
    http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shopmac/family/macbookair?afid=p219%7CGOUS&cid=OAS-US-KWG-CPUMacBookAir-US
    Then compare... for example...
    http://www.shopping.hp.com/notebooks
    Or try dell.
    http://www.dell.com/us/p/popular-laptop-deals?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&ST=cheap%20l aptop&dgc=ST&cid=35911&lid=894403&acd=52183,8,0,100035970,763349761,1296893920,, 11758726,5701123461&redirect=1
Then ask yourself that question again.
You should be able to get a 6-9 cell quad core with 4-8gigs ram and a 64 bit OS for 1/3 the price of the core duo 2gig air. 9 cell battery is where your cost goes up, it's the difference between 9 hours (6 cell) and 13 hours (9 cell) of battery life.
But a quad core 4 gig 6 cell 64bit OS laptop will run you about $499 -$699. And it will bury the $1600 air 500 feet in the ground without breaking a sweat, all while watching p0rn, playing call of duty and streaming netflix as it digs the hole.
I guess the real question is, do you want to buy a computer to make a fashion statement, or do you want to buy a computer to use as a computer?

There is no bookmarks tab, expect you are referring to the bookmarks menu on the menu bar ("File, Edit, View, History, Bookmarks, Tools, Help") on your XP system.
Once your restore your menus on you Window 7 system, you can get rid of the bookmarks button. After going through the 10 steps below your toolbars on your Windows 7 system will be more usable again and like your XP system, none of which has anything to do with Sync.

  • HT3819 I am a teacher. I have an iPhone and iPad for personal use.  I also have an iPod and now an iPad for school use.  Would it be best for me to use home sharing on all 4 devices, or should I split my account and have separate accounts for home & schoo

My first i device was an iPod touch that I was given for use in my classroom.  Then I got an iPhone for personal use.  Both items are listed under the same username and account.  Since then I now have 2 iPads, one for home and one for work.  I have many apps that are only for work like Math Zombie and Science Facts, and many that are for personal use, like Facebook and YouVersion.  I know that I can synch each device and tell iTunes which apps go on which device.  However at home I use a Mac, and my school computer is a PC.  I am wondering if I should split my account and keep personal separate from work.  Then I can synch all school related devices on the PC and home devices on the Mac.  I realize that there maybe the rare occaision that I might want one app for both accounts.  That's the chance I take on splitting my account.  Are there ay benefits one way or the other?

Will you be the person paying for apps on both accounts?
Are you the only person that will use both of the iPads?
Is there a chance students will be using the work iPad and if so, do you want personal data stored on it?
If you're the only one using it I'd keep the same account just to have the flexibility of having access to everything on all devices. If your students will be using it or if the school is paying for the school apps I'd keep separate accounts. It all depends on how often you will use school apps from home, and home apps at school. Just some things to consider...

  • HT1495 I work at a school. I have setup up Ipads for student use. I do not want them to have password because in the past, they have added emails to the account. I want them to be able to create an itune account on ipad so they can download free apps

I need student to be able to download free apps on ipad without compromising the account that I have created. In the past students added usernames and emails to the account when they forgot the password. I do not want them to have password so I need them to creat their own accounts to use besides the school account created. Can this be done on ipad?

Thank you for trying the new Firefox. I'm sorry that you’re unhappy with the new design.
I understand your frustration and surprise at the removal of these features but I can't undo these changes. I'm just a support volunteer and I do not work for Mozilla. But you can send any feedback about these changes to http://input.mozilla.org/feedback. Firefox developers collect data submitted through there then present it at the weekly Firefox meeting
I recommend you try to adjust to 29 and see if you can't make it work for you before you downgrade to a less secure and soon outdated version of Firefox.
Here are a few suggestions for restoring the old design. I hope you’ll find one that works for you:
*Use the [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/classicthemerestorer/ Classic Theme Restorer] to bring back the old design. Learn more here: [[How to make the new Firefox look like the old Firefox]]

  • How do I set up a set of 8 iPads for school use?

I am setting up 8 iPads for a school using a Macbook to manage them. I have been advised that the bet way to do this is to use Configurator for settings etc and iTunes for managing apps. Could anyone provide a walkthrough guide as to how to use these two programs together successfully. Can it be done or am I better to stick to iTunes only? I am happy for the same content to be replicated on each iPad.
Many thanks to anyone who can provide a solution.

  • How do i restrict access on ipad for public use?

My employer would like to set up Ipads in each office to display our advertizements and products as well as play informative videos.
Eventually we would also like to be able to set up access on the ipads for the clients to type in their personal info and submit quote requests electronically.
However, we want to be able to restrict the access so that the public are only able to view and access specific apps or websites that we have chosen.
also if anyone has a recommendation on an app that provides a pausable slideshow for displaying documents that would be helpful as well.

One option would be to investigate an MDM such as AirWatch.  Devices can be placed in Single App Mode, or setup with a restricted browser.  You can also display business content on your devices.

  • How do I lock down the new iPAD for enterprise use?

We are planning to purchase iPADs for Enterprise and give it to a certain department. I would like to know if there is a way to lock it down the iPADs so that individual users can not download any apps on it other than what the IT team puts on the iPADs.
Thank you for your help and for our time,
    Adana01

You will have to go to settings - restrictions - on each iPad and disable app installation.
They will not be able to install apps unless they know the restrictions access password.

  • IPad for college advice

I have to gift an iPad to a college student. My question is: get the new iPad or wait for a new model? I understand that every year will be the same question but I looked at A6 processor benchmarks (iPhone 5) and it's stunning. I believe they will do an iPad with A6 in the future so, talking about longevity, I don't know if it's wise to get one today.
    Thank you

Whatever you decide, get as much memory as you can. One of my sons is a junior in college and went back to school this year with a refurbished ipad2 with 64 gb. He loves it and loves that he has so much memory. Almost immediately, he used up about 22 gb when he added in his itunes music, some movies, tv shows, etc. He will add books for school, apps to transfer word/excel documents, pdfs, games, etc., He has to have The Financial Times, Wall Street Journal, and NY Times on his ipad, so it will all add up.
We are tech saavy enough, not advanced in any way, and are not a family that always wants/needs the newest and the best. We're happy with what works for us. However, many love the idea of being the early adopters. It's Tuesday, and as we speak people are lined up outside some Apple stores waiting for Friday's roll out of the iphone 5! Good for them and I hope their wait gets them the new phone.
Our intro to ipads started when my husband wanted a reader of any sort. I suggested an ipad, and that we wait until the new ipad came out. I got on this support forum to learn about issues that might have come with the new ipad. Given our concerns about possible overheating and some other issues, we decided to get an ipad 2 32gb. However, we waited too long and couldn't find any. So we went refurb through the Apple Store. We don't get Siri and the retina display, and that's okay with us. But because the price was great, we went to 64gb. And my son decided he wanted the same.
If you're not going to surprise the college student, and if money's not an issue, you might offer him the option
of getting one now or waiting for the new one. My guess is the college student might want one now instead of doing without one for who knows how long.
Also, when a new ipad is launched, whatever ipad you buy now can be sold or traded in. The Apple refurb store is still selling the original ipad and sometimes they sell out.
And I still think, at least for a college student, memory is most important.
All the best as you make your decision.

  • How to lock down the ipad for employee use

I would like to know if they is any app or something that I can use to lock the ipad down for small business use.
The last thing I want is my employees checking their facebook on my ipads.

What's the need for a business plan thousands of people buyt touch pads and computers every day and don't know how to use them. More or less they end up being paper weights. Beside the restrictions are instented to stop misuse. And who said he didn't have a business plan. the ipads replace pen and paper and so employee enter information directly into the server. This lets the employee be mobile and still do their work. It's being done in places all around the world.  Ipad is an computer for the most part.
U going to tell me he should not use computers next?  Maybe he should enter track important information at all?
it's funny how one question of how do I restrict access on an ipad turns into an inquisition.
Name any major corporation that let's their employee do whatever they want on their computers?  Name a College?
That's why these companies build in this security stuff any way. You are protecting your investment by taking the proper steps to make sure that the equiptment is not misused. Where do you work where your Boss let's you do whatever you want on his or her computer. Play games? Get viruses?
You seem to making some kind of special assumptions because it's a ipad.
Same this goes for printers, copying machines, and coffee machines. You never give people unlimited access to any thing unless you wan to call the service man 20 times a week.

  • Is it possible to use my phone sim in my ipad, for the use of my data?

I am aware that iPad's are not phones and therefore cannot make calls, but I wondered if I put my sim in an iPad, could I still use it for internet data?
I hoped I would be able to use my phone sim so that I don't have to take out a separate plan for the ipad and pay for two data allowances?

I would not be sure, however I am curious as to what would the difference between getting a BB SIM and a data plan with unlimited email and web access? (Virgin does not exist in my country)
This is because if there is no inherent difference, then just get a data plan sim.

  • How many ipads for business use can be connected to one itunes account

I have nine ipads that i want our service techs to use. How many ipads can i connect to one itunes account to restrict access or is there another way to limit the personal use?

However, I'm not aware of any way to limit access - aside from Parental Controls.

  • How is iPad for outdoor use?

The sun glare, and also how easy or hard it is to keep clean. The iPad I've played with looks like it would fit best for library/office/ living room/bedroom usage and in the evening. In public it's a little awkward holding it in front of your face with both hands, and flat on a table it's liable to pick up dust and debris on a park table/coffee shop/restaraunt/bar type of setting. I'm asking this because it seems to me that the main reason I'd get one is to have something a little easier than a laptop to throw under my arm or slip in a bag to take to a place where I might need it. If I know I need something, I'd bring the laptop.

The only screens that do well in bright sunlight are eInk screens. Screens like iPads, iPhones and laptops have do not do well in bright sunlight. It also rains outside.
I don't know why you'd need to hold an iPad up in front of your face but I agree, it might get tiring. I take mine regularly to coffee shops and restaurants. I brush the table off first. I don't generally lay it flat though as that would be hard to read. I usually rest the edge on the table and prop it up or hold it up, dependint on what's available. I don't take it to bars.
Generally, I find my iPad to be a great portable option. It fits in my messenger bag, goes everywhere with me.
