IPad full - storing raw video files...?

Guys,
I have an 64Gb iPad which I like to take away with me on snowboarding holidays (in place of my 15" MBP3,1), which I copy video files onto from my GoPro Hero2 video camera’s SD memory card via the camera connection kit. After a little editing down in iMovie I'll upload the movie to Facebook or YouTube.
My unedited video files can be a few gig in size (if I leave the camera on for a whole run down the mountain (35 minutes is about 3.9Gb)), so the problem I'm having is that a few days or a weeks worth of video files can easily fill the iPad's 64Gb memory - if I'm away for longer this becomes a problem as I soon max out the iPads storage.
Uploading unedited files to Dropbox for future editing isn't really an option (as it takes hours and hours to upload even a single 3.9GB file over a typical chalet’s wifi connection, and file size limits aren’t great either), so I was wondering what other options people might suggest?
I have an iCloud account, but that possibly has the same transfer time/storage limitations as Dropbox?
Is there any way of copying files off of the iPad onto an external hard drive for storage? Would this require jail breaking the iPad? Any apps available?
Anyone have any other suggestions?
I know Apple want to push cloud services, but I’m surprised Apple haven’t provided a solution for this gigabyte storage problem for movie editing when wifi isn’t great…
Cheers,
  Martin

when you did copy the whole file structure, you have to chose 'import from camera/open archive' …
I'm following the same workflow as you do:
• in Finder, without FCPX, on my extHDD I create a folder 'backup Zoo Day May' (or any other descriptive title)
• drag the whole file structure into it from SDcard to folder
• when finally finding the time for editing, in FCPX, import from camera, then open archive, then digging thru my drives to that folder
• FCPX notices this folder as a 'cam' and offers the usual import options, no need for that old (sorry, mish ) trick with dmgs

  • Raw video files

where are the raw video files stored for Imovie and how do I delete the raw files from the HDD that I capture into Imovie? (looking for folder path is it in the Imovie Cache?) I need to clear out the old stuff to make room for new stuff. Once I find them I drag them to the trash and empty the trash right?

Open iMovie. Attach your camera via USB. The iMovie Import Screen will come up. Do NOT click Import All. But at the bottom of the import screen, you will see a button that says ARCHIVE ALL. Push this button with your mouse and select a folder on your external drive to store the Archive. (and give it a name). [See here for a picture from Ken Stone's Tutorial|http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/imovie_09stone.html#acquiring]
Later on, when you want to edit your movie, you can open iMovie and select FILE/IMPORT...FROM ARCHIVE, and import this into iMovie just as if your camera is attached.
The first time you do it, I would recommend going through the whole procedure and importing a least some of the archive into an iMovie Event. Once you are sure it is working for you, you can delete the files on the camera.

  • How do I archive the raw video files from my camcorder to ext hd?

I have a couple hours of video sitting on my Canon Vixia HF S10 HD camcorder. I don't need to edit them in iMovie (at least for now) but I would like to keep those raw video files for use at a later date and get them off my camcorder. I want to put them on my external HD if that's the best thing to do. Does anybody know the best way forward with this task?
    Many thanks.

  • How my clients can upload  raw video files to my linux server

Any ideas or thoughts really welcome:
I need to figure out a way or process for my clients to upload their raw video source files ( any known usual video formats and extensions) from their video cameras or devices or storage source  that is tied into or thru their computer with a firewire or USB 2+ connection    and then uploaded directly into my remote linux server.   my linux server hard drve space is not a problem..
Once client has finished uploading,  I would then download the resulting saved files to my computer for video/audio editing using Premiere 11
I know that one restriction or problem would be their connection and ISP issues (throttling etc.) ,  My server permits basically unlimited up/download traffic,  so this should not be a problem and server has balancing.
Do they need to use a typical ftp account and something like cuteftp???   however my understanding of FTP clients do not do streaming from a device????  yes or No??   I always thought just static files.....   aam I correct?
how might my clients stream into my server.   i am wanting to set up an online video/audio editing website
once i finish editing I would upload file probably as a zip file for them to unzip.  I can also build and send (mail)  out a DVD-CD or Blu-ray.  any other thoughts welcome on returning the finished edit.
My tech people say that i cannot effectively load and operate Premiere onto my server to do the editing.
I would appreciate any feedback and ideas
    thanks

How people upload files to your server is really a question for your server company... you need to find out from your server company how they handle permissions and uploads
Yes, no current version of Premiere Pro or Elements is written to EITHER install on, or directly use files resident on a server
No current version of Premiere works properly over a network
-you may NOT "map" your My Documents folder to a network drive
-you MUST give all users administrator accounts to use Premiere
-you MAY also need to... http://forums.adobe.com/thread/969395
    -http://forums.adobe.com/thread/771151
    -http://forums.adobe.com/thread/851602
-a work around, of sorts http://forums.adobe.com/thread/957523
-and not on a "domain" http://forums.adobe.com/thread/858977
    -also PreEl see #5 http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1017199
    -more PreEl problem http://forums.adobe.com/thread/975117
    Adobe Anywhere http://forums.adobe.com/message/4682127
-Announced September 2012 for "future versions" of Premiere Pro
-NO information on pricing or availability date
Once you and your server company figure out permissions and the software your clients need to use for uploads, you will then need to download the files to your video data hard drive to edit

  • RAW Video & File Corruption

I am a photographer and filmmaker having serious corruptions issue with RAW photo and video files on Areca RAID arrays. RAW files (.CR2, .NEF, .DNG, etc...) are particularly affected but DSLR .MOV and Cinema DNG files are being corrupted as well.
This is happening on two systems that are identical except for the Areca controllers and drives (ARC-1880, & ARC-1882) and different drives. Originally these arrays were both RAID-3 but I converted on to RAID5 to see if the problem was corrected. The issue still persists.
I've contacted Areca for support but have not received a response.
Any advice or help would be deeply appreciated. See system specs below:

    Tony,
I do have another theory, but before I begin, I'll say Eric Bowen from ADK is an absolute uber-tech and he knows a LOT more than I ever will .
    Here goes...
What you are seeing is absolutely bizarre!
Areca cards are awesome, but their support is not that great. You might want to pose this same question on the Areca's Owners Forum on hardforum.com. There are some really experienced Areca users that frequent that forum that may recognize this particular failure mode.
Your firmware is pretty old; I updated all of my Areca's (1880 and 1882 series cards) to v1.52 a long time ago. I would suggest you do the same. Areca does not share all the "fixes" that they may do in firmware and in general newer is better.
I read a long, long time ago about some subtle incompatibilities with some drives and Areca controller cards specifically dealing with SATA NCQ support. My number one guess, and hope for you, is that you have this turned on and that by turning it off you may resolve this crazy issue.
Finally, I don't agree with Eric about only using non-Enterprise drives with Areca parity RAIDS. I've been violating that rule for too many years using WD and Hitachi drives to feel that is your only problem here. Before I ran Areca's with non-enterprise drives I did a lot of www research regarding users building 48 drive arrays using non-Enterprise drives and Areca controllers (for them Enterprise was way more expensive with that many drives in play). And personally, I've had probably a dozen Areca cards, used probably around 60 various drives in them over the years and never, never, ever lost any data. My use has been 100% RAID 5 (and some RAID 0) and while I have had varied hardware failures (5 bad drives - 3 were Enterprise and 2 were non-Enterprise), a bad RAM stick (Areca replaced on wtty. - never had any file errors at all, but the Areca error log showed about 6 events where memory ECC had to kick in to prevent a loss), a bad Areca CPU (totally cratered, but when then sent me a RMA card the drives picked right up and again, no data loss whatsoever).
Yes, Enterprise drives are recommended, but Areca's newer firmware bios settings allow you to even disable TLER completely which can result is REALLY slow array performance but NO data loss under any circumstance.
Best of luck! What you are dealing with sounds VERY frustrating!

  • Storing raw video

Suppose you (or me in this case) capture raw video miniDV tape, edit the project, run the end result off onto DVDs and everyone is happy. No, really, they are.
What do you do with the raw video? Do you delete it off of your hard drive? Is the original tape the archive? Do you save it on a DVD as an archive?
    Noel

I put the tapes on a shelf and delete the media.
For a business, I make sure the approval is signed and dated first.

  • Storing a video file on my tunsten T5 produces very short battery life

I recently stored 2 videos on my internal drive of my T5. I have lots of room .. over 50% free.
I noticed battery went from 100% charged to dead in less than 1 hour.
I had done 2 things .. 1. changed preferences on pictures to slide show and 2. stored 2 videos.
I have now taken slide show off the preferences options and deleted the videos.
    Battery now staying charged.
Has anyone else had this experience?

    Hi Chandra ,
SQL Server is providing a really useful architecture, called file
stream. It is a combination of the database and the file system, thus you have the advantages of both. This tutorial has it flaws, but it is a good

My iPad will only recognise photos when I connect an Sd card with the camera connection kit. It doesn't recognise video clips from the same card?!

Most probably because your camera records videos into MTS files, which aren't cmpatible with iOS. Read http://www.iphonelife.com/blog/87/playing-back-1080p60i60p-non-mov-videos-right- your-camera for more info and the alternatives (preprocessing ("remuxing") on a desktop etc); don't forget to follow the iVI review link at the bottom if you have a Mac.

  • Why won't ipad play music or video files?!

This started suddenly. Music and videos will load but not move at all (jumps right back to pause as soon as I hit play.) I know they are loaded because I can jump to different frames of video but neither will move at all. Other apps are also snarled (This American Life keeps quitting as soon as I go to certain screens.)
Have I mentioned that I wish I just bought another PC? Same BS, twice the cost...

Try this and see if it helps.
Quit all apps in the recents tray completely and reboot the iPad. Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Double tap the home button and the recents tray will appear with all of your recent apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the app that you want to close. Tap the home button or anywhere above the task bar.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

  • IPad as Container for Video-Files?

I want to save my AVCHD and Quicktime Movies of my Nikon D7000 on my iPad 2 during my holidays. And I want to hav a look on the videos. Is it possible? Is thera a special App for this?

    Hi Mattia 13,
I understand what you're asking for but unfortunately the answer is no, Premiere Pro does not have an easy tool to do what you're asking for, which is a real shame since it's a very common editing situation.
I've requested such a tool years ago but most requests for intelligent additions to Premiere seem to fall on deaf ears at Adobe.
What I requested was this: an intrinsic 'Crop' tool that appears above the intrinsic Motion settings in the Effect Controls Window.  This would give users an intelligent and easy way of cropping the dimentions of the 'window' or 'frame' through which the  clip could be freely positioned, resized, rotated, etc.  You can achieve the same result by using the Track Matte effect, but it's far far more work than the solution I suggested to Adobe, since years later, the Track Matte effect remains broken, and thus requires nested sequences to get it to work the way you suggest.
The best thing to do is send you Feature Request here: http://www.adobe.com/go/wish and pray that Adobe will listen.

  • Raw video file( Or loss less file ) from I Phone and I Pad ?

How can we bypass the compression of video shot through I phone and I Pad?

    No.
Think of this way - the original material is like making tortilla chips. The H.264 compression is like stepping on a bowl of chips. All the material is there but it takes MUCH less space and something is lost in the crushing.
Converting from H.264 to ProRes will give you a more easily editable format, but is not the same as completely reconsituting the chips. What is lost in the original compression can not be regained.
Still, having said all that, the situation is not totally dire. H.264 is an amazing compression codec. If you start with adequate light, a steady camera mount and controlled movement in the frame, the original images can be quite good. Low light, unsteady camera and fast action are the enemy of quality images.

  • Renaming Video Files with Adobe Premire

I am running Adobe Premiere  Pro CS4.
I have 4 16GB cards full of Raw Data that I have been playing around with to get the hang of editing, thats going well but now I'd like to store my RAW video files (the ones I plan to keep for later) on my storage drive and back up drives. I want to rename all my video files from the standard 00001.MTS that my camera stores them as. The only thumbnail I have to go by in Adobe Bridge is the grey EN symbol. The only way it seems I can see a preview of the file to figure out what 00004.MTS contain to rename it is to open it in Premiere, however when I rename it in the project pannel it is just a program specific rename and does not actually rename it on my hard drive.
What is the best method for seeing what is on a file and renaming it. I thought Bridge would be useful for this, but I can't seem to get a video preview or a thumb nail to go off of.

    Stuart,
That would be an excellent feature request.  Right now, what you describe is true to the best of my knowledge.  Sorry I don't have a better answer for you.

  • (un)rendered video files...

I am a fairly new to Final Cut Express. I have edited videos in the application before without any problems, however I have been running into some trouble with the last couple projects I have attempted to work on...
My problem is when I drop a .MOV or .AVI file into my timeline, it tells me I need to render the file before it can play back. I understand that most effects need to be rendered before you can view them in playback, but these are raw video files. What makes these different from video files I have used in the past?
If anyone can shed some light on this for me, I would appreciate it.

Look in item properties for the clips. WHat exactly does it say? FCE only works natively with QuickTime files in DV for standard definition and the Apple Intermediate Codec for HD. If it isn't one of these the material needs to be converted.
