i have a gen 1 ipad that im trying to update the os on but every time i plug it into the computer to sync it to back it up first the back up progress never moves. the ipad is on ios 3.2.1

Well at least that's some progress. Have you closed all of your apps on the iPad and reset the device? That might be worth a shot.
Tap the home button once. Then tap the home button twice and the recents tray will appear at the bottom of the screen. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the app that you want to close. Close them all. Tap the home button twice.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.
If that still doesn't work, reset all settings on the iPad and try again. I am going from memory here because it has been over two years since I was running iOS 3, so if you don't see this in the settings, you may have to hunt a little bit. Settings>General>Reset>Reset all Settings.
BTW - when you right clicked on the iPad name didn't you get a contextual menu that had Backup in it as an option?

This depends, if the music was purchased on the iTunes store you can transfer purchases. If it was not then you would need a 3rd party program in order to rip these files to the computer.

The Mail.app preference file (which stores all account information and general Mail.app preferences) is located at Home > Library > Preferences > com.apple.mail.plist.
All Mail.app mailboxes and other data is stored in the Mail folder at Home > Library > Mail.
With the Mail.app quit on the new hard drive, place a copy of the Mail folder from the old hard drive at Home > Library on the new drive. If there is an existing Mail folder at Home > Library, this will replace it.
Place a copy of the com.apple.mail.plist file from the old hard drive at Home > Library > Preferences on the new hard drive. If there is an existing com.apple.mail.plist file at Home > Library > Preferences on the new hard drive (and there should be one if you have launched the Mail.app on the new hard drive), this will replace it.
Launch Mail on the new hard drive and the Mail.app should be completely restored or identical to the Mail.app on the old hard drive.

Today. I thought that i should update my iPod as my iPod was beginning to become obsolete.
So, i went to update, agreed to all of the agreements and stuff like that, and then a error message popped up.

Why? It's my iPod?! I should have all of the privileges to it anyway!

Some things to try first:
1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.

4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
5. Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)

    •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

Take it back to Best Buy and talk to the store manager. Possibly they can work something out with Apple.

Try:
- iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
- Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

- If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
- Try another cable
- Try on another computer
- If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

If you can't find it on any of your homescreens or app folders, and you can't find it via the spotlight search screen (swipe your first home screen to the right), then is it hidden by Settings > General > Restrictions > Installing Apps being set 'off' ?
If not then have you tried a reset to see if you can find it after the iPad has restarted ? Press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.
