IPad goes into a "coma"; hard to wake it up

I have an iPad that was recently replaced by Apple for this very problem. I will have used my iPad and the battery level is very high, it is working fine, I put it away, and when I go back to use it, it has shut itself down completely. Even worse, it will not wake up with just holding the sleep button for 5 seconds. You can hold it for minutes, and nothing will happen. You can push every button. Hold home and sleep, push volume, etc. and NOTHING works, it's just "dead". Then you hold the sleep button down again for an uncertain amount of time, and it will boot up and then work fine. You never can tell when it will pull its shut down routine. It's seemingly random.  And you can never tell what it will take timewise and button wise before it decides it's willing to start back up again. Same problem on two different iPads.
At times it also is now having a problem when the screen will randomly dim and freeze completely. And then no button works properly at all until you hold home and sleep interminably and then it shuts down and reboots.
I've gone in for genius bar appts, and they had me do a complete cloud backup and erase and restore (which took hours, btw) and then the same thing kept happening. Took it in again, and they decided to replace the iPad. Erased my old one, gave me a new one. I put only a few of the apps that I had on there before. I did not do a complete restore, since they thought there might be a bug in the restore, but the iPad is still doing the same thing. This has been happening since I upgraded to iOS7.
I am very frustrated and want to know the next step to having a healthy iPad. I am still within my Apple Care window for support.
Sincerely,
Kim

    I'm using a late 2006 2.33GHz imac.
I clean installed 10.6 from disc then updated to 10.7 from download.
Now every time my computer goes into sleep it won't wake up.
The only way it will restart is to pull the mains lead out of the imac, put it back and try until it will start.
This only happened after reinstalling.  Only Apple OS was on the imac and so it must be an issue with the software I believe.....
Anyone know how to cure this problem please?
    Thanks
    paul

This isn't a fix, more a workaround I used when I had wake from sleep problems that lasted from some point in 10.6.x, through 10.7 and into 10.8 (got fixed for me in 10.8.2). It seems to be connected with Bluetooth failing to wake up properly:
System Preferences>Energy Saver and set 'computer sleep' to 'never'.

  • IPad goes into recovery mode every time I power up

Is this normal?  What could be wrong?

It is by no means normal. When you say that it goes into recovery mode, do you mean that you have to restore the iPad every time that you turn it on?

  • MBA goes into deep sleep on OSX, wakes up and boots Win7??

I recently picked up my new 11" MacBook Air (1.6, 4GB RAM, 128 GB HD) and because I'm graduated student, there are a few programs that I need to run under Windows 7. So I used boot camp to install a legit copy of Windows 7. That all went fine, so now i have a nice dual-boot MBA.
Here's the problem. I know that the new MBA models have a new sleep mode when you close the lid. there's a short-term sleep and a long-term sleep as far as i know. 90% of the time i'm in OSX (10% in Win7). When I close the lid for a short amount of time (up to an hour maybe?) and then open it back up again, it comes right up, no problem. But whenever its been closed for a longer period of time and I open it back up, instead of it OSX popping back up on the screen, it starts booting Windows!! VERY frustrating! What the heck is going on here?? This happens pretty much every time without fail and is very easy to replicate, you just have to wait the requisite hour or so until i know the MBA has gone into the deeper sleep mode.
Anyone else running Boot Camp and running into this problem?

    Hi kdolson,
Interesting issue you're experiencing. I have the new MBA as well, as well as several machines configured for Boot Camp, and none of them experience this issue. I've let my new MBA sleep for 10+ hours undisturbed and OSX fired right up. I'm wonder if something funky is up with the partition map on your HD.
What is set for your default startup volume, Windows or Mac? By default when you Boot Camp the machine and install the drivers/Boot Camp support files it sets the Boot Camp volume to be the default startup volume. I wonder if that's perhaps the issue. Regardless, this shouldn't happen (deep sleep the machine and have it wake to another boot volume)
It's probably worth reaching out to Apple on this.

  • Instead of sleeping, MacMini goes into a coma

This doesn't happen every time, but it does happen; I'd say 50% of the time .
I either put the Mac Mini to sleep myself, or leave it to go to sleep by itself when it reaches the set time limit.
When I wake it, which I usually do by just hitting a key, sometimes it wakes but sometimes it doesn't and there's no response.
When that happens, I have to hit the power button, very lightly so as not to shut down the computer.
When I do that, after a brief delay of a few seconds the computer does wake up, but on the display I see a weird black rectangle at the centre of the screen measuring about an inch across by 1 1/2 inches vertically.  At the bottom of the screen there's also a row of oval slot shapes, similar to the row of oval slot shapes that appear on screen when you're raising or lowering the output volume.
I have to hit another key, whereupon the Finder/Desktop finally appears.
This doesn't seem healthy. What's up with it? Is anyone else experiencing this?
By the way, the Mac Mini is nearly new (I bought it last June).

  • HT4890 How do you retrieve photo's after having to restore when iPad had gone into a 'coma' ?

My PC ' s motherboard has gone and then blow me the next day my iPad goes into a coma . I went to apple store who restored it for free , brilliant service, however my photo's have not come back!! So I need to know if you can retrieve from iCloud without the need for a PCM ?

It is designed to be synced to your computer regularly.
It is not a stand alone device.
You should regularly import any pics and vids to your copputer as you would with any digital camera.
"Shouldn't iPad have an automatic back-up or a recovery mode that will restore its data if gets accidentally lost? "
Yes.  You import/sync everything with your computer and back it up with your regular backup of your computer.
    Your pics/vids are gone.  Sorry.

  • Why iMac goes into coma booted in Ext HD Tiger hot plugging USB cable?

    Folks:
Had this question posted as "iMac goes into deep coma w/hot plugging USB cable??" on the "using your iMac G4" forum, got 63 views but have not received any replies there. Since I was booted up in Tiger 4.11 on my FW Ext HD, thought I'd try to post over here to see if I get some sage advice from this forum.
Was trying to experiment with ways to get my scanner to work if I finally decide to upgrade my iMac to 10.4.11 by booting up Tiger using External HD by firewire and then plugging in the scanner after that. As soon as the USB plug touched the port the computer "went black"--total crash. Took about 5 mins before I was able to resuscitate the machine with the power button. I repeated my experiment in the same manner and down she went again, down and out . . . . Tried to start it for a few minutes, nothing, went to dinner, came back, nothing. Finally, unplugged it for a minute and then she came back to the land of the living . . . .
When I restarted from the 10.1.5 internal HD I plugged the scanner in and opened the scanner app in Classic and all was fine. I like being able to use Classic apps and if it wasn't for the fact that my Camino browser is starting to crash when browsing the newer websites I'd have no reason to upgrade. Even if I get a new Intel computer I won't be able to boot back into the Power PC operating systems, right?
Anyway, would like to know if it is "well known" that you can't hot plug peripherals when booted up in external HD or if this is a "special problem" that only I am experiencing?
    Thanks,
    e.e.p.

Since the issue could be in the peripherals or the computer involved, this could
be a hardware failure of some kind. If you have replaced the USB cable, and all
other variables have been double or triple-checked, even a problem with the
computer's power supply could be at fault. Or there may be a partial short in one
of the electrical circuits involved with this USB cable and whatever it supports.
Please re-explain these other operating systems and their locations, since the
10.1.5 and other stuff seems irrelevant. Unless there is a hardware failure.
    And that is a possibility.
If you got an old early model Intel mac with 10.4.11 running in it, that would not
support Classic OS9 based apps directly. However, there are several sources
for replacement parts and also complete repaired and guaranteed PPC Macs.
There are limits in some, in what OS X versions and practical uses they may
allow now, with less online support & dwindling apps to run on the older OS X.
You may be able to look into the system logs and crash reports, via Console
Utility, to see what kinds of errors reports & crash logs the computer created.
Also, in System Profiler, there should be a Software> Logs section and it may
have some recent activity logs there. You can compare log creation times with
the intervals of these failures and see if a report matches your experience in
a real-time error log or other.
Is this USB port where the failure occurs, located in the external drive enclosure
or in the computer attached to it? What kinds of external FireWire devices and
USB devices are involved? Have you ran just the bare-bones computer & seen if
there are problems in just that, by itself? Troubleshooting invites checking it alone.
If there is an overload of some kind regarding a power supply failure under
only some circumstances, you could try a powered USB hub when using
several items attached to the computer; so it would carry that load.
Anyway, it sounds like a magical mystery tour is in store, in there.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Why do I drop my personal hotspot from my iphone to ipad whenever my ipad goes to sleep?

OK, so I have the new ipad wifi only. Whenever there isn't a wifi signal around, I turn on my Personal hotspot from my iphone and sync internet via Bluetooth. First, the process to recognize pairing always seems to be sporadic. It takes a long time for my ipad to see my iphone's attempt to establish pairing. Most of the time I have to turn both Bluetooth's settings off and then on to establish pairing. Then, once I do gain a connection, if my ipad goes into Auto-Lock after 2 minutes of inactivity, my pairing is lost and I have to start the proess all over again. It's very annoying. Any suggestions would be great appreciated.

  • Toshiba PX1268E - No power going into the drive

There doesn't seem to be any power going into my external hard-drive, although the light is coming on. Could this be a problem with the power supply cable or a more fundamental problem with the actual hard drive?
It doesn't make any sound (no fan whirring as usual) and isn't showing on my pc.
    Anyone have an idea?
    Cheers
    Kev

    Hey kev,
Thats really strange but can you hear if the HDD is spinning up? If yes you should try another cable. Maybe the cable is faulty and should be replaced
If not I would contact the nearest authorized service provider in your case. They can repair the external HDD for you because in this case you can do nothing. This must be checked from professional people.
Here you can search for nearest authorized service provider: http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com > Support & Downloads > Find an ASP

  • Fix for iPad going to sleep?

We're using our iPad in conjunction with AppleTV and we're having an issue with the iPad going into sleep mode in the middle of presentations. I see where the autolock can be set for as high as 15 minutes, wasn't there once a "never" option? We are running 5.0.1 at this time. If not in settings, is there an app or any other fix that anyone knows about that will give me a "never" type option for the device not to go into sleep mode? Thanks.

Be thankful they at least let you have the 15 minute timeout!  My past employer not only enforced the long passcode format, but they only allowed the 1 minute timeout feature - and there was no chance of getting any of their security settings changed (IT was very strict about that).
Also, for those deleting the account, changing things, and re-installing the account - odds are it will revert sometime, as the server is often setup to periodically push out the security certificate and overright the old one.

  • Does anyone else's iMac go into a coma?

When I leave my iMac unattended, it frequently goes into a coma, for lack of a better term. The screen is dark, and nothing I do brings the computer to life again. It isn't really shut down, though. In order to get a usable computer, I have to hold the power button for several seconds to shut down, and then restart. It probably happens ten to fifteen times a week and is a real pain.
Does anyone have any ideas what's going on? I"m running OS version 10.7.3 on a 24" iMac from early 2008.
    Thanks,
    Gary

  • I have the ipad3,and I plug my charger in to charge my ipad and it comes up with the charging battery sign charges for a few minuets and then the white apple sign loads up into the screen then my ipad goes dead again,I hope someone can help:)

I have an ipad 3, when I plug my charger in the ipad comes up with the sign to say it is charging and then the apple sign loads up as if the ipad is about to come on,but then the ipad just goes dead again,I've tried holding both buttons down and I have also tried charging it over night but still nothing is working.
    I hope someone could help:)

When you say you tried holding both buttons, did you mean you held both the power and home buttons until the apple logo appeared, ignoring the red slider if that appears?  If so, exactly what happens?
You may need to take the iPad and charger to an Apple store genius bar to be tested by the techicians.

  • Streaming audio from my IPAD to my Apple TV from Rhapsody application.  when Apple TV go into Screen Saver mode, about 5 minutes after that it stops playing the Audio Stream and goes into Sleep mode.

I am Streaming audio from my IPAD to my Apple TV from Rhapsody application.  when Apple TV go into Screen Saver mode, about 5 minutes after that it stops playing the Audio Stream and goes into Sleep mode.  I am using the Optical Out from the Apple TV to my receiver, the Apple TV is hard Wired to the Network, the IPAD is Wirelessly attached to the network (it continues to play the Audio Stream).  When the Apple TV is turned back on it resumes playing once I manual select it for output from the IPAD.  All device are on current releases of software.  I have no Video hooked up to the Apple TV.  How do I correct this?

Intermittent problems are often a result of interference. Interference can be caused by other networks in the neighbourhood or from household electrical items.
You can download and install iStumbler (NetStumbler for windows users) to help you see which channels are used by neighbouring networks so that you can avoid them, but iStumbler will not see household items.
Refer to your router manual for instructions on changing your wifi channel or adjusting your multicast rate.
There are other types of problems that can affect networks, but this is by far the most common, hence worth mentioning first. Networks that have inherent issues can be seen to work differently with different versions of the same software. You might also try moving the Apple TV away from other electrical equipment.

iPad goes completely black while using it, comes back in a few seconds battery doesn't hold charge either

Try a Reset [Hold the Home and Sleep/Wake buttons down together for 10 seconds or so (until the Apple logo appears) and then release. When the screen goes blank then power ON again in the normal way.] It is 'appsolutely' safe
