IPad Grants for Autistic Children
i have a friend who has an autistic child who is using the ipad in school and she is seeing a huge improvemnt since he has started using the ipad. She wants to to get an ipad so her child can also use benefit from the ipad's "uniqueness" at home, but price is concern.
are there grants for special needs children out there that she can take advantage of to help cover the cost or at least help offset the cost of an ipad? also what are the risks of buying a refurbished ipad off the apple store?
Apple does not have any such programs - you might want to contact a local foundation, or an Autism support group, to find someone who might provide such a grant.
The refurbished ones are as good as the ones sold new - some claim better, because they've been more thoroughly gone over as part of the refurbishing process than the mass production in the factories.

However you can purchase an ipad and also a protective cover (this is a necessity as a dropped ipad will damage your ipad without a case) and you can buy aps for autism on the itunes store. (try google to find lists of such aps as some parents put them up to help others - also try the facebook autism support groups also as they too do mention aps that are useful for autistic children). Your State autism group (Victoria?) should also have information on autism aps or even a workshop that may detail such aps.

Android and iOS are two different operating systems. So one app won't work on the other unless the app makers make a version for each operating system.

Getting a IPAD grant for my special needs child
I have a special needs child who has mutliple disabilities. I'm looking to get a grant to purchase an IPAD. She has starting using one at school and it has helped with her reading and math skills. I have applied thru different organazitons and so far have been denied ten times. My county agency has awarded funds for this year. I was curious if Apple provides grants. I am also a paraeducator in a special education department. So maybe there are avenues I could puruse. My her needs we live pay check to pay check so I am looking for any help. Or maybe a apple user may be willing to sell me an IPAD 1 at a cheap price. Any help you guys can give will be most appreciated.

I just bought my 10 year old autistic daughter an IPOD touch that she needs to take to school with just the music (no apps) on it but she also also has an IPAD mini for home that is fullly loaded with apps. The last time I tried to connect 2 devices to Itunes I ended up loosing my own music library so I am a bit hesitant to start setting up this new IPOD touch with outsome help. Anyone have any ideas on how I set up Itunes to make this work and not loose her IPAD apps and media?

Yes, they can play games - there are hundreds if not thousands of games available in the iTunes Store. Beware of the "free" games; many are free for the base game but charge for things like additional levels, "coins" etc. and those paid add-ons can add up quickly, to dozens or even in some cases hundreds of dollars. I'd strongly suggest you set up restrictions on the iPad to prevent your children from making unauthorized purchases. See:

You will need an Internet provider of some sort; Apple is not a provider and so the iPad does not include a data service. You can either use a home Internet connection with a WiFi access point (aka "router") or you can get an iPad with WiFi+Cellular and sign up for a data plan with a cell carrier. WiFi through a home Internet service will probably be cheaper.

If I create separate Apple IDs for my children, will they still be able to access content I have purchased on their iPhones and iPads?
I happened to stop at the Apple store yesterday for a separate issue and had a discussion about iCloud. Seems like this is how iCloud works (also, there's another thread on this forum that explains it well).
Each member of the family can have their own iCloud ID, which will be used for Mail, Calendar, Contacts, Apps, Bookmarks, Media, Photos, etc. and having this content synced automatically with a Mac (computer). The iCloud IDs work in tandem with the associated Apple ID — so while you cannot have multiple Apple IDs, you can certainly have multiple iCloud IDs tagged with a certain Apple ID.
While all this makes sense from the iOS device standpoint, I'm unclear on how things will sync with a Mac computer, especially if the family uses a single iMac with multiple login IDs for various members. For instance, I currently have an iMac and iTunes content resides in my Public folder, which my wife can still access when she logs in with her login ID. I'm guessing that I'll be able to set up her iCloud ID using her login, set up my iCloud ID using my login, while both our iMac logins will retain the same Apple ID. This would take care of syncing Photos, Contacts, Calendars, etc.
Another (not sure if unique) problem I face is our Address Book — right now, we have one GIANT address book with different groups set up. Certain groups sync to her iPhone, while others to mine. Some contacts are common between both of us. I'm hoping that if she/I updates a common contact, then the change will be reflected in both our groups of contacts. I hope this makes sense — for instance, I update a contact named Joe, and he's on my group of contacts in my iPhone. Hope iCloud updates the master contact card for Joe on the iMac, which would then automatically trigger the update on my wife's group of contacts—that Joe also belongs to— leading to an update on her iOS device as well.

Open AirPort Utility, select your AirPort Base Station and click Manual Setup.
Select Access Control Tab.
Pick Timed Access from the list.
Now click on the "+" button, enter the MAC adress of the device you want and decide for the network time limits.
Update your Airport.
You can find the MAC adress of an iOS device by going to Settings/General/About. -
Which Ipad mini for 2 Daughters Help

I'm looking into buying 2 Ipads mini for my 11 and 13 years old daughters for Christmas. I'm familiar with most Apple products but not much when it comes to Ipads.
I came across to the mini ipad 2 retina 32GB on sale for $299 however I'm not sure if the model and size (32GB) are suitable for them. There's the mini 3 which is more expensive.
Thanks in advance.The biggest issue you could face with a 2 instead of a 3 is that MAYBE the 2 will max out on iOS updates sooner than the 3. And it is just a maybe because none of us know when devices max out. The iPad 1 stopped at iOS 5.1.1, the iPad 2 was eligible for the latest iOS update, which is 8.1.2, but did not get all the features, nor did it get all the features of iOS7.
So the 3 offers you the longest compatibility. That said, unless you're continually looking for new apps that won't make much of a difference. For example, when my iPad 2 maxes out then the apps that are on it would continue to work, I just couldn't get any newer versions or may eventually have issues finding compatible new apps.
Given that it's for children, Id' go for the Mini 2. I would also recommend apple care plus, which is an extended warranty. However it covers up to 2 instances of accidental damage repair. Say your daughter drops it. With Apple Care plus you'll pay a $49 fee for a replacement, without it you'll pay 219 for that same replacement. -
The iPad “Grant” cannot be synced because there is not enough free space to hold all of the selected items (additional 5.67 GB required).

According to Apple's customer service line you can return an engraved iPad for an exchange, but it's not clear if it's within 14 or 30 days. If you call they says 30, but their site says 14. I think it has to be purchased straight through Apple though. Contact where you bought it from and tell them you are thinking of buying a iPad and having it engraved, but are concerned about the refund policy. They'll explain it in more detail at that time.

I have GarageBand for iPad 2 and noticed that there are far fewer loops for iPad than for apple laptops. Is there a library available of apple loops? I haven't been able to find any if there are. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Update: An Apple rep called me today to update the status of my return. I was told that the replacements for the BLACK iPad 2's was still another 3 weeks out (at least) so they offered me a brand new WHITE 16GB iPad 2. I could have that or continue waiting. I opted to go ahead and accept the offer of a new white one. Worst case scenario if I don't like the white one I have buddy that just bought a 16GB black one that he would be willing to swap it.

Apps are only tied to one account... You can set up two iTunes accounts on your computer, however, and let his iPad sync to his account. If he has never backed up his apps to a computer, however, he will have to redownload all the apps. Afterwards, he can backup to iCloud instead of your computer.
