IPad has locked and is asking for passcode

Hi all
I'm new to this forum so I might be asking questions that are already answered
As the title suggests, my iPad has suddenly decided it needs a passcode.
I have never set up a passcode for this of any other of my Apple products
I have no strange apps running that require a passcode
It is still running IOS6 as the upgrades seemed to have bad feedback and I was cautious about causing problems
I have not backed this iPad up via iTunes or iCloud and there are many, many photos that I wouldn't want to lose
I have trawled the internet for a couple of weeks now, but all resolutions seem to tell me to restore this and lose all my personal content.
I know I can reload apps etc, but I would really like to keep the pictures
If a factory reset is really only the only option, so be it, but what is Apple's stance on this?
I can't find anything that resembles a 'Sorry, we made a bit of a mistake here' or perhaps 'Take it to your local genius bar (100 mile round trip for me) and they have the tech to fix this and save your pictures' but there seems to be nothing of the sort.
My Macbook Pro occasionally asks for a passcode, but as I haven't set one, I can just hit the enter key and it bypasses the need to enter one, but this is not available on the iPad
So am I now on my own, trying to sort this with limited tech knowledge of how iPad, & iTunes works?
I know this is not just me as there are many others out there with similar problems, so how about a bit of help here please Apple?
Thanks for any (nice) advice
Mike

We are fellow users here on these user-to-user forums, you're not talking to iTunes Support nor Apple.
Had you added an Exchange (e.g. a work) email account to the iPad ? If you had then it's possible that the account administrator is forcing a passcode for security reasons (to stop people reading work emails) - if you had then try contacting them for the passcode.
If not then has anybody else used the iPad and possibly added a passcode ? If they haven't then see if you can copy your photos off by connecting it to your Mac and see if they show in Image Capture, iPhoto or Aperture. If not then you could try a search for programs that claim to be able to copy photos off a device (I haven't tried any so I can't suggest one).
To reset the iPad back to factory defaults follow the steps on this page : Forgot passcode for your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, or your device is disabled - Apple Support
As you haven't been backing up (and presumably not copied your purchases over to your Mac's iTunes library), what you can redownload for free will show in the Purchased tabs in the iTunes, App Store and iBooks apps - you won't be able to redownload audiobooks or tones (they are one-time only downloads), nor if an item is no longer in your country's store (or if you've moved countries since buying them).

  • Purchased a new ipad set up a password of 4 digits, screen has locked and now asking for a long password?! please help

why is my new ipad asking for a long password when I set up a 4 digit code??

You will most probably have to force your iPad into Recovery Mode to remove passcode.
    1. Turn off iPad
    2. Turn on computer and launch iTunes (make sure you have the latest version of iTune)
    3. Plug USB cable into computer's USB port
    4. Hold Home button down and plug the other end of cable into docking port.
DO NOT RELEASE BUTTON until you see picture of iTunes and plug
    5. Release Home button.
    ON COMPUTER
    6. iTunes has detected iPad in recovery mode. You must restore this iPad before it can be used with iTunes.
    7. Select "Restore iPad"...
    Note:
    1. Data will be lost if you do not have backup
    2. You must follow step 1 to step 4 VERY CLOSELY.
    3. Repeat the process if necessary.

my ipad went on update and now asking for passcode whcih i don't know what should i do now to start operating

    Hey sunny1008,
Thanks for the question. The following article provides some solutions if you are having issues with passcode lock:
iOS: Forgotten passcode or device disabled after entering wrong passcode
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1212
If you have never synced your device with iTunes, or you do not have access to a computer
If you see one of following alerts, you need to erase the device:
"iTunes could not connect to the [device] because it is locked with a passcode. You must enter your passcode on the [device] before it can be used with iTunes."
"You haven't chosen to have [device] trust this computer"
If you have Find My iPhone enabled, you can use Remote Wipe to erase the contents of your device. If you have been using iCloud to back up, you may be able to restore the most recent backup to reset the passcode after the device has been erased.
Alternatively, place the device in recovery mode and restore it to erase the device:
    1. Disconnect the USB cable from the device, but leave the other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
    2. Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to shut down.
    3. While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the device. The device should turn on.
    4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the Connect to iTunes screen.
    5. iTunes will alert you that it has detected a device in recovery mode. Click OK, and then restore the device.
    Thanks,
    Matt M.

When I downloaded PhotoShop CC to my iMac it was suppose to include Lightroom. Lightroom was already running as a free trial.  Now the trial has expired and PSCC asks for the Lightroom serial number. What to do?

Lets clear a couple of things up first.
1, You have the Photographers CC subscription which gives you access to PSCC and the current version of Lightroom.
    2. PSCC does not include Lightroom.
Now what you will need to do is delete the Lightroom app on your iMac and restart the Mac. Then you can d/load Lightroom from the CC app.

Welcome to the Apple Community Robin.
Contact AppleCare(or Apple ID Support), upon speaking to an operator you should explain that your problem is related to your Apple ID, this way you will not be charged for assistance, even if you don’t have an AppleCare plan.

  • I downloaded the new upgrade and now my ipad is locking me out, asking for a passcode.  I dont remember giving it a passcode, how can I find it or get around it?

I have an ipad 2, just downloaded the new upgrade 7.03, and now it is asking for a passcode.  I do not have a passcode.  Anyone have any idea how I can get around this or is there a default passcode?

I called Apple Support and a supervisor helped resolve this for me on my iPad. I suggest calling them for help as this is obviously an issue with the iOS 7 update - she helped me without charge. I could be missing something in my upcoming description, so do not take this as complete - call them.
I had to update iTunes on my Mac Air to the latest version, and I had an iCloud backup from the day I updated to iOS7. Have iTunes open but do NOT connect your iPad yet. Shut down the iPad. Then press/hold the Home key on the iPad while you connect the USB from the iPad to the computer (an image of the USB cable appeared on the iPad). Follow the prompts in iTunes to restore and then backup using iCloud. When the iPad rebooted again to do the backup install, I got the same pass code issue and iTunes would not recognize the iPad without entering a pass code. I disconnected the iPad, turned it off, pressed the Home key while connecting the USB cable. When I did the restore and backup from iCloud the second time, it worked without the pass code issue occurring.

‘iPad is disabled’ fix without resetting using iTunes
Today I met my match with an iPad that had a passcode entered too many times, resulting in it displaying the message ‘iPad is disabled – Connect to iTunes’. This was a student iPad and since they use Notability for most of their work there was a chance that her files were not all backed up to the cloud. I really wanted to just re-activate the iPad instead of totally resetting it back to our default image.
I reached out to my PLN on Twitter and had some help from a few people through retweets and a couple of clarification tweets. I love that so many are willing to help out so quickly. Through this I also learned that I look like Lt. Riker from Star Trek (thanks @FillineMachine).
Through some trial and error (and a little sheer luck), I was able to reactivate the iPad without loosing any data. Note, this will only work on the computer it last synced with. Here’s how:
    1. Configurator is useless in reactivating a locked iPad. You will only be able to completely reformat the iPad using Configurator. If that’s ok with you, go for it – otherwise don’t waste your time trying to figure it out.
    2. Open iTunes with the iPad disconnected.
    3. Connect the iPad to the computer and wait for it to show up in the devices section in iTunes.
    4. Click on the iPad name when it appears and you will be given the option to restore a backup or setup as a new iPad (since it is locked).
    5. Click ‘Setup as new iPad’ and then click restore.
    6. The iPad will start backing up before it does the full restore and sync. CANCEL THE BACKUP IMMEDIATELY. You do this by clicking the small x in the status window in iTunes.
    7. When the backup cancels, it immediately starts syncing – cancel this as well using the same small x in the iTunes status window.
    8. The first stage in the restore process unlocks the iPad, you are basically just canceling out the restore process as soon as it reactivates the iPad.
If done correctly, you will experience no data loss and the result will be a reactivated iPad. I have now tried this with about 5 iPads that were locked identically by students and each time it worked like a charm.

Try it and good luck. You have nothing more to lose if it doesn't work for you.

  • HT1338 MacMini locked and is asking for six digit password.

I purchased my MacMini six months ago and it was second hand. The seller advertised it woth latest Lion OS. Two daus ago, while my wofe working on it, it seized operation and is now asking for a six digit code. I tried reaching out to the previous owner but cant locate him. Any idea how i can reset this? I troed calling Apple for help but they are asking 50 dollars to do this. It seams unreasonable for something i already paid for to pay again for resetting my unit. I tried reinstalling the OS by restarting the unit and holding the two keys " Command & R"  or other key combinations but i can not get passed the six digit code or the "lock" screen. Any suggestions? Thanks!

    Still having issues...
The keyboard does not respond. First i thought it was due to bluetooth kb not connecting fast enough. So i bought a Macally usb KB. That didnt work either. As i am reading more blogs, how do i verify if i have Intel based or Power PC based machine other than tear it apart? It seems like for Intel you need to remove the Cmos battery to reset the bios. What am i doing wrong? Going through multiple key holding scenarios and ofcourse replacing a ram each time, does not result in 3 chime reset indicator. I even tried left and right keys.....very frustrating! Any thoughts?

  • I pre-ordered and album, it took my money and now the date has come and is asking for the same amount but i dont have it because it already took it... what can i do? or am i just already screwed

i have no clue what to do, i'm thinking i just totally got screwed over with these products again. but i waited so long for this album and not i cant get it. so i'm a little angry. i just would really like to know if i could do anything.. at all. and i physically have a song from the album i bought a long time ago but that doesnt even show in my purchase history...

Check your purchase and bank/credit card history. I preordered the Rival Sons' Great Western Valkyrie a couple of months ago and was charged for three individual songs at £0.79 each as they were released one-by-one and then the balance of £5.62 when the album was finally published last week. You should not have been charged twice.
