IPad iMovie sound edit

I'm trying to use the iMovie app on my iPad2 to spiff up an MP4 video.  I want to filter out the (super loud) noise of my friend moving the camera (& microphone) and increase the volume of the actual event being recorded.  I can't figure out how to edit the existing audio on the video to (greatly) reduce or get rid of the loud.
Any help?

You both may not like the answer, but
If you need to create and edit an audio track, you need to do that is a seperate app, then move it to your I tunes library, and you can add it to the project.  You can turn the sound off on a project, and you can record a voice over onto the clip.   When you add an audio clip you can move it from point a to point b, but that is about it.
I think the reality is that iMovie on the pad is ok for simple projects, but if you want to do much fancy stuff, you need to move the project to a computer and use a higher powered tool.

  • IMovie sound editing

The video I am working with has a poor quality soundtrack with a lot of noise such as wind blowing.  It is a wedding scene and I want to replace the original video soundtrack so that only the music I add will be heard.  I do not want any of the original sound from the video to be heard.  I can't figure out how to do this.  I appreciate any help.  Thanks!

With any of the Video Clips in the project you can do what's called an Detach Audio (under the Clip Menu). That will extract the audio from the video into a seperate sound track. You can select it then hit Delete. It will remove that existing sound. Then you can drag any music clip you want and drop it directly onto the Video clip where you want it to start playing.

  • How can I transfer a project to my iPad to continue editing in the imovie app?

I have created a project on my macbook in imovie and want to transfer it to my ipad to continue editing.  This way, I don't have to travel with my laptop, I can take my ipad instead.  I have tried several methods, but nothing seems to work.  I've published to itunes and synced the ipad with the video.  I can watch the video but when I open imovie and click the "import a project from another iOS device via itunes" button, it tells me there are no projects available to copy from itunes.

You can go the other way if you ever need to.

  • New ipad 3 & transfering & editing HD video in imovie....

I LOVE the new ipad 3 and want one. My question is...with the iPad 3....will you FINALLY be able to transfer HD 1080p video shot with a canon dslr like the T3i to the ipad via the Apple cam kit....and then BE ABLE TO EDIT THAT VIDEO IN IMOVIE?!!!! Lol
Thats all i wanna know. Love my ipad 1st gen....but skipped the ipad 2nd gen cause it couldnt do this. I am a photographer/videographer/blogger who travels alot, and I LOVE the form factor of the ipad and all it does.
But this is the one sticking point for me. I know there will always be things a laptop or desktop can do that an ipad isnt meant for....however...Tim Cook keeps stressing about a "Post PC world"....and this is a real world application. People shoot high quality video with dslrs and would like to edit that video while on the road. It seems like the umbilical cord has been cut btwn the ios devices and computers with the icloud and syncing....but not being able to load and edit video directly onto your ipad keeps the device stuck in the umbilical cord days. I find it very annoying.
The new retina display and faster speed make it the perfect device to edit videos while on the road. I just hope i will be able to upload my 1080p video shot with my canon dslr directly to my ipad and edit it in imovie. I dont want to have to wait to get home to my imac.

iPad only plays AVIs that conform to this spec:
Motion JPEG (M-JPEG) up to 35 Mbps, 1280 by 720 pixels, 30 frames per second, audio in ulaw, PCM stereo audio in .avi file format
I am not sure what iMovie will edit though.
Once you open iMovie and select start project-you should be able to select video from camera roll.

  • Video and Sound Editing

Does a 2.3GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 have enough power for serious video editing with imovie or serious sound editing with garageband?

Hi, depends on how serious I guess...
Note: The Mac App Store lists the system requirements for current versions of iLife applications (iPhoto, iMovie, and GarageBand).
I don't have access to the App Store, so I can't see the details, I'd think for those 2 it'd be acceptable with enough RAM.

  • Re user tip: How can I import a homemade DVD into iMovie for editing? - I've followed instructions so far so good, until I get to "You can then FILE/EXPORT USING QUICKTIME and choose Apple Intermediate Codec as your video codec. "  How do I do that?

Re AppleMan 1958 excellent user tip: How can I import a homemade DVD into iMovie for editing? -
I've followed instructions with success until  "You can then FILE/EXPORT USING QUICKTIME and choose Apple Intermediate Codec as your video codec. "  How do I do that?
I installed MGEG Streamclip 193b8 and used their utility to install quicktimempeg2 and got a message stating it was successfully installed.  (I'm on latest Maverick 10.9.2 on iMac)  Then I dragged the VIDEO_TS file from my home DVD into the streamclip app.  It asked which of 4 files to use, and I selected the first one.  Streamclip played the video with the sound.  so far so good. but now I cannot figure how to use quicktime player 10.3 to export this vob file out of streamclip.

Thank you for your quick reply and for clearing up my confusion.  I'm exporting the first section now.  I choose the smallest size, 3x4 but I'd prefer to go higher as this DVD was originally a VHS home movie.  I'm wondering if after three conversions (VHS,->DVD->MPEG) the resolution will be so poor as to not support a larger size frame?  If it can, what size should I select when I export?

  • Can I import AVCHD to iMovie and edit

Hi - new to this, but have just been bought Panasonic HDC-SD800 HD camcorder.  Before I play with it, the instructions suggest that the only format I can use with imovie11 is 'i frame' which is 960x540/25p.  As I already have a similar 'standard' canon camcorder with similar definition, is there any point in keeping the new Panasonic. Am I missing something here, or is this 'new' Panasonic just not Mac friendly?

If you have the camera, your best bet is to shoot a minute of footage with it and see if it will import to iMovie. I think it will. Check your owners manual for recording mode. You should have several choices, including 50P, 50i, 25P and iFrame. If you choose 50i, 25P, or iFrame, it will work with iMovie. If you choose 50P, it will not be editable in iMovie without some bit twiddling.  I think you will like 25P the best, but if you are shooting sports, you should also try 50i. In fact, try it anyway so you get to see both and choose the one you prefer.
iFrame produces movies that will look almost as good as the AVCHD (you probably will not be able to tell the difference) but the import is much quicker, and the fill sizes are much smaller.
Let me seeif I can decipher the manual for you.
"This unit is based on AVCHD format/MPEG-4 AVC file format.
Video signals for the AVCHD that can be played back with this unit are 1920x1080/50i, 1920x1080/25p and 1440x1080/50i. Video signals for the iFrame that can be played back with this unit are 960x540/25p
Like I said, stick to 50i or 25P if you want to edit in iMovie and/or play back on a TV set. Use 1920x1080 for highest quality (but this will also be the biggest file size. 50i and 25P are about the same in file size. (50P would be 4 times bigger in file size - but do not use 50P mode if you want to edit it.)
When motion picture is recorded in iFrame format
You can play back on Mac (iMovie11)
It is not compatable with motion pictures recorded in AVCHD format."
This means basically that you can edit and play on the Mac. From there you can share to a Blu Ray, DVD, Apple TV, iPod, iPad, iPhone, the Web, etc. etc.   The key message is that you cannot edit the iFrame on a Windows computer.
It is also possible to record in 1920x1080/50p at maximum quality.
    Quote-
"The scenes recorded in 1080/50p can be saved or played back by this unit or the HD writer AE 3.0"
It is possible to record in 50P at maximum quality, but what they are telling you is that you will be limited to playing it back on the camera. Television sets will not play 50P. iMovie will not natively edit 50P. I assume the HD writer AE 3.0 is a proprietary Panasonic disc burning program. It is likely Windows only, so it will not work on your Mac.
If you want to edit 50P on your Mac, here is an excellent blog post on how to do it. You can judge for yourself whether you feel comfortable doing it.
From the above, can I move HD from this unit into iMovie and edit without too much hassle or do I return it and stick with the perfectly decent 5 year old Sony not in HD that just 'works'.  I have happily played with iMovie for 3 years and want to be able to tidy up family videos.
If I were you, I would keep it and shoot at 25P. I think you will really like the HD quality.
Keep in mind that if your final result is DVD, then evertying will be converted back to standard definition anyway. You will need to find new ways to share your results with your family.
The Apple TV is a great way to do this. Also YouTube does a great job these days making it easy to share 1080P video with friends and family. Finally, you can invest in a BluRay device. I don't generally recommend this, because if you want to give copies to family or friends, they would need a BluRay player as well.
There are a lot of nuances to BluRay. Come back and ask if you want to go that route.
    Good luck.

  • IMovie '08 Editing Delay Issues

I truly hope someone out there can help me with this because the solution from the "genius" guys at the Apple Store was that I needed to do my project in Final Cut Pro. I am creating a movie in iMovie '08 using approximately 70 illustrated drawings (jpeg) and recorded about 80 lines using a snowball in iMovie. Each of the lines are separate sound files (7 year olds are good for about 1 line without mistakes) I am now in the process of timing the images to the voiceover and when I click on the voiceover clip to move it the hand moves but not the clip or skim line and then the beach ball comes up for a spin and then the clip moves but not with the hand. So basically its all a guess as to where the voiceover lands. Sometimes it overlaps another one or is not close enough. The delay basically makes it impossible to edit efficiently. The movie file itself is around 89MB. I will tear my hair out if I have to edit in this manner. Any suggestions out there? I have done this process successfully with a shorter 2 minute movie (see sample at YouTube, search for "Little 'O'opu Who Lost His Way") but this one is about 7 minutes. Mahalo!

I wish I had thought about recording in GarageBand as your explanation below would seem to alleviate the issue I'm having, unfortunately that means recording the Grade 1 students all over again which took an entire school day.
How so? If recorded separately and brought into iMovie for editing, then the same files can be brought into GarageBand for editing from the original source location/management application. If the "voiceovers" were made directly to iMovie '08, then they can be exported either as an audio track along with your video or exported separately as an audio only file like AIFF. In either case, the audio track (or tracks) are edited separately from video in GarageBand. E.g., if you need to physically split an audio track in GarageBand, you select the track you wish to edit, move the playhead to the point where you which to split the track, and simply select the "Split" Edit menu option. If you then deselect the track as a whole and re-select one of the split portions, it can then be dragged to a different track, or, if the is space available, moved along the time axis for alignment to the video track. Periods of silence can be delete if present and, as to the actual adjustments to the audio such as fades and setting of volume, each audio segment on any audio track can be manipulated in much the same way you used to do this in the old version of iMovie using the "rubber band" contour/control. In many ways you may find your audio editing more reminiscent of iMovie HD than iMovie '08.
I'd like to be able to salvage what I have if I could. What if I export the existing movie as is, extract the sound files only in QuickTime Pro--maybe I could import and edit in GarageBand and reimport into iMovie?
As indicated above, this is not necessary since you can export/share your project directly from iMovie '08 as a single audio/video file, video only file, and/or audio only file. Best strategy here would be to export/share your iMovie '08 project content to your final target compression format. GarageBand will import and thumbnail the video and convert the audio to AIFF for editing. When finished editing, export the GarageBand project using the "Export to Disk > Full Quality" option. GarageBand will then take your original video and mix it with your edited audio which is then re-converted back to your original audio codec.
I'm not very conversant in GarageBand (or iMovie for that matter) so I could possibly make a mess of everything but I'll give it a try.
GarageBand also has a "Revert to Saved" option which will return you to your last saved version of your project but if you fail to make periodic saves during the work session, you won't get the most out of this option.

  • Sound editing problem

I'm new til iMovie 08.. If I put backgroundmusic on but in sertain places want to reduce the music a little so I can hear the people in the film speaking and after a while turn the music up again - how do I do this?
are you able to lower and higher the background music as in iMovie 06? Can I "divide music" into different clips?
I really would apreciate if someone could help! Thanks!

    Yes this can be done.
First, you need to enable the advanced editing tools if you haven't already. Go to iMovie/Preferences and put a checkmark by "show advanced tools".
Now you should see some editing icons in the middle of your screen between the project pane and the events pane. The 2nd icon from the right is for sound editing. First, select a clip, then press this icon. You will see an audio editing box. If you click "ducking", it will keep your voice track at the same volume, while decreasing the volume of the music tracks to 15%. You can fine tune these levels further with the sliders.
Once you have edited the sound for a clip, you will see a little audio symbol in the thumbnail for the clip. You can click on this little button to bring up the audio editing again.

Change the selection and try again."
Ive even tried opening in itunes and copying from thier but they wont open in Itunes, no message or anything they simple just dont open. its strange because it does open in quicktime player.
please if anyone has any ideas that can help me please let me know XD thanks.

First problem: You're fine. The hotter it gets, the more the fans spin up. The computer is designed so that at max load, at max fan speed, it won't overheat (unless it's obstructed by something, e.g. sitting on your bed swallowed by a comforter). It's not the best thing to keep it that toasty for days at a time, but a couple hours at a time shouldn't be a problem.
Second problem: If something in the trash won't delete, just use Secure Empty Trash and it should be fine. Since .torrent files are quite small, it should only take a couple seconds.

  • Download and import YouTube videos to iMovie for  editing

Download and import YouTube videos to iMovie for editing
YouTube always provides people with raw video materials on all sorts of things happened worldwide in real time. Video lovers are fond of downloading these files as private collection, even using video editors like iMovie to do further editing of their favorite ones, so as to import them to portable devices like iPod, iPhone, PSP, Blackberry, etc. for playback, or upload to their own websites to share with others, or do something else as they like.
However, not all the people have found a proper way to download YouTube videos, not to mention how to add these files to iMovie for editing. YouTube videos are in the format of FLV, which is not a workable format in iMovie, so if you want to import YouTube videos to it without trouble, you should convert FLV files to iMovie compatible formats such as MPEG-4 and MOV in advance. With the special intention of solving these two problems, this guide will show you how to download YouTube videos and import them to iMovie for editing step by step. If you are in need, just feel free to go along with it.
Step 1: Download, install and run Pavtube YouTube Converter for Mac
This converter can process downloading and conversion simultaneously. Once you launch it, the interface below well pop up.
Step 2: Add URL, select output format and set save path
Press tag “Add URL” in the above interface, and then the following window will appear. Just copy and paste the URL of the YouTube video file which you want to download and convert to the text box after “URL”. Then select a supportable format for iMovie by clicking the drop-down list of “Convert To”. Here I choose MOV for example.
Afterwards, you can insert the storage file name in the text box of “Save As”, if not, the program will generate one automatically. Here I save my file as “mycollection”. Meanwhile, you are allowed to hit “Browse” in the opposite side of “Save To” to specify the destination folder. By the way, if you want to save the original FLV files, you are allowed to tick the checkbox “Save FLV File” to achieve this goal.
    Step 3: Custom
This program enables you to adjust video and audio parameters like codec, bit rate, aspect ratio, frame rate, sample rate, and channels, so that you can change them randomly according to your own demands. Generally speaking, the options which refer to values are always in condition of the larger values, the larger file size, but better quality. Do remember click “OK” to save your custom settings.
    Step 4: Download and convert
Once all the settings are done, you can click “OK” button to start. The following window will show you the progress of downloading and conversion.
Step 5: Import the output MOV files to iMovie
As soon as the YouTube video files have been downloaded and converted to MOV or other iMovie workable format, you can click “Open” at lower right corner of the above interface to find out the output files. Afterwards, launch iMovie, and click File > Import to add the output files to iMovie for editing.
    Tips:
    1. This program supports batch tasks so that you can download multiple YouTube video files in batches at a time.
    2. Pavtube YouTube Converter for Mac adopts multi-threading technology, which makes its download speed is faster than any other similar YouTube downloader.
    3. Besides YouTube.com, it can also automatically detect and download online videos in the format of .flv, and f4v from many other video-sharing websites, like Yahoo Video, Myspace, Google Video, Fox and more.
    4. It also provides users with conversion function, with which you can convert any YouTube FLV/F4V files to other formats like MP4, MKA, WAV, AC3, MKV, FLV, MP3, M4A, 3GP, AVI, MOV, MPG, etc. at will.
    5. If you only use it as a YouTube downloader without format conversion, you can take it as a piece of freeware.
All right, this guide is ending up now; hope it will do you a favor while downloading video files from YouTube as well as importing them to iMovie for further editing.

It's a clip from CNN (with all credits etc. added). When one refers to it as a clip posted on "YouTube", then people understand the quality will be poor.
I've watched television go from everything shot on a tripod with clean, meticulous editing rules, to almost anything goes. It has to do with cultural reference.

  • How do I open a Quicktime created wav file in other sound editing software?

A friend sent me three wav files created in QuickTime but they won't open in ANY sound editing software or players I have other than Quicktime. I need to use these for an upcoming podcast but can't do anything with them until I can open them with my editing software (WavPad Sound Editing).
Can someone please tell me how to do this?

On a Windows system you can't. There is a plugin codec for WMV for the Mac version of QuickTime, but not for Windows. You'll need to use other software.

  • Monitor setup for film sound-edit

    Hi freaks,
My monitor setup is 3 Bm5a's and a Bm9 sub. The movie will be mixed LCR, not surround.
In the (Logic 8) prefs/audio/surround i've got it set to 5.1 with the L monitor on output 1, R on out-2 and C on out-8 of the digi 003 in my studio. Output 1-2 run throughthe Bm9. This way when not sound-editing the set functions normally for music.
The style is quite lowkey, intercut with documentary footage so i wont be needing the sub on a seperate channel as it wont be used.
The audio was recorded in M/S which makes things interesting (for me at least) translating this to the 3 channel format.
The M channel is currently set to surround with the front and rear surround channels turned off. If i need to pan it around i can turn on the front surrounds on a channel.
The S channel has a gain mono->stereo plugin with the right channel phase inverted. output set to surround.
Is there a rule for the relative loudness of the center speaker compared to the surrounds? To get them to match i have to drop the center by 20dB!
The mix will be done in a proper facility, but i want to have everything well sorted out. The Pyramix/Protools crowd aren't big Logic fans.

Output 1-2 are connected to the "main-outputs" on the 003 which are thus controlled by the volume knob. The center monitor on output 8 isn't. This is where i was getting the volume difference. I'm presuming they should be the same volume.
