How do I recover the data on my iPad2? It abruptly quit while I was shutting down and started playing Gaga's Scheibe from "Born this Way" -- it was not coming from My Music or iTunes. I pressed both home key and side button to get it to stop and plugged it in to recharge. The USB connector to iTures screen showed up and that's as far as I can go. You have no choice but to lose your data back to the last backup you made.
Here's how to do the recovery. Note you may have to try to get into recovery mode more than once to succeed:

While downloading software update for Itunes, got message saying detecting Ipad in recovery mode and telling us to restore Ipad to original settings, which we don't want to do. Also cannot turn on Ipad; shows Itunes symbol with connector. Help!
No promises but a System Reset is worth trying:
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo. Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.
A System Reset does not remove any apps, music, movies, etc. nor does it cause any settings to revert back to default.
Also, you might wish to download the iPad-2 User Guide. Pay special attention to page 162. Note that this Guide also applies to the iPad-1 with IOS 4.3 except for those functions that are not supported by the hardware.

Went on a Vegas trip on Sept
11th. My iPad worked fine
before getting on the plane. In the hotel about 48hrs later I opened my iPad it
read the message: “iPad is disabled,
connect to iTunes.”
To my knowledge myself, nor anyone else has tried to access my device or
entered the password incorrectly 3 or more times.
I started by updating my iTunes account on my computer to the latest version.
Then multiple times I attempted
the “Use recovery mode”
steps.
e.g.
1. Turn off your device and leave it off.
2. Plug in your device's USB cable to a computer with iTunes.
3. Hold down the Home button on your device as you connect the USB
cable. Keep holding down the Home button until you see the Connect to iTunes
screen.
I received the message on my computer saying “iTunes has detected an iPad in recovery mode. You must restore this iPad before it can be used with iTunes.”
I click the “Restore iPad” button.
During which time the progress bar on my computer’s iTunes
screen was moving very slowly and other times seemed like it wasn’t moving at
all. I would leave my two devices and attached by the cable and upon returning
I would find that the process would have ended before it had completed.
Initially I thought it was a connections issue because I was in remote
locations with slow internet servers. Since being home I have re-attempted the
process and have been able to fully complete the forced recovery but I will
receive a message saying:
“The iPad could not be restored. The disk you are attempting to use is full.
Removing files and emptying the recycle bin will free up additional space.”
What recycle bin is the message referring to? Obviously I CANNOT access any
data on the iPad itself. Just for the **** of it, I did empty my computers
recycle bin and re-attempted the forced recovery process but as I suspected it
did nothing for the iPad and I still received the same message: “The iPad
could not be restored. The disk you are attempting to …”

Try and turn off iPad/iPod and proceed to step 3 of Recovery Mode.
Recovery Mode
1. Disconnect the USB cable from the device, but leave the other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
2. Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to turn off.
3.While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the device. The device should turn on.
4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen. When this screen appears, release the Home button. iTunes should alert you that it has detected a device in recovery mode. Click OK, and then click Restore to restore the device.
Note: Data will be lost. You may have to repeat the above many times. -
Why is my iPad in recovery mode after update to 7.1.1?
I updated my iPad to 7.1.1 and after restart, the screnn signified connecting to iTunes. When I did that, it says it's in recovery mode and must be restored. Why is it doing this and how can this be corrected?
Something went wrong with the update and you are in Recovery Mode.
1. Turn off iPad
2. Turn on computer and launch iTunes (make sure you have the latest version of iTune)
3. Plug USB cable into computer's USB port
4. Hold Home button down and plug the other end of cable into docking port.
DO NOT RELEASE BUTTON until you see picture of iTunes and plug
5. Release Home button.
ON COMPUTER
6. iTunes has detected iPad in recovery mode. You must restore this iPad before it can be used with iTunes.
7. Select "Restore iPad"...
Note:
1. Data will be lost if you do not have backup
2. You must follow step 1 to step 4 VERY CLOSELY. -
What does this message mean? "itunes has detected an iPad in recovery mode. You must restore this iPad before it can be used with ITnes." How do I restore when every time I connect to my computer I get this message?

Hey, my ipad is disabled and i cant open. i tried connecting it with itunes in recovery mode to restore it but it wont work it doesnt show and options itunes doesnt detect my ipad in recovery mode. what do i do know? please help!!!
If you followed these instructions and you were unable to enter recovery mode, I'm still leaning toward a hardware problem. Also, since you have IOS-7, read this. It might help.

I have windows 8 enterprise OS and iTunes ver. 10.5.0.142. I was upgrading my iPad to IOS 6.1.3. After finishing the upgrade my iPad Reboot and currently stucked-up in a plug-in screen and iTunes Logo. When I try to connect it to the iTunes pop-up message appear saying " iTunes has detected iPad in recovery mode. You must restore this iPad before it can be used with iTunes." In short, I push the restore button then another pop-up message appear saying " The iPad software update server could not be contacted. Make sure your network settings are correct and your network connection is active, or try again later." I tried many ways but still no luck. I try also to uninstall the iTunes and installed the lower version but still the same problem, I even check the firewall if the ITunes was block or My privileges is administrator to run the iTunes or even reset my winsock but the problem still remain. Ipad in recovery mode not recognized by PC or Itunes
Hi All,
I have a Ipad 1 that's stuck in recovery mode ( usb wireplug with itunes logo on top ), the really bad thing is that it's not recognized by and PC or any Itunes I tried, so there is no way to kick it out of the Recovery... When connected to the wallplug to charge it doesn't do anything, screen stays black. I tried all the obvious thins allready, holding down the home and powerbutton for 10 seconds etc etc, tried to find it in the device explorer on the pc ( It doesn't even register as a camera or harddisc in my computer ), It just loops into the recoverymode everytime I try any of the well known methods... Anyone have a better suggestion for me, maybe even the solution? Thanks in advance!!

6. Open iTune (make sure you have the newest version of iTune)
7. You should see "iTunes has detected an iPad in recovery mode"
8. Use iTune to restore iPad

Ipad displays “ipad is disabled connect to itunes”, I have tried putting the ipad into recovery mode and then restoring but that does not work. I have also tried doing a hard reset of the ipad and that does not work either. Any ideas?
My son let one of his friends use his ipad. The next time he tired to use it he could not get it unlocked, I tired to unlock it but it kept telling me that I had the wrong pass code. ‘iPad is disabled’ fix without resetting using iTunes
Today I met my match with an iPad that had a passcode entered too many times, resulting in it displaying the message ‘iPad is disabled – Connect to iTunes’. This was a student iPad and since they use Notability for most of their work there was a chance that her files were not all backed up to the cloud. I really wanted to just re-activate the iPad instead of totally resetting it back to our default image.
I reached out to my PLN on Twitter and had some help from a few people through retweets and a couple of clarification tweets. I love that so many are willing to help out so quickly. Through this I also learned that I look like Lt. Riker from Star Trek (thanks @FillineMachine).
Through some trial and error (and a little sheer luck), I was able to reactivate the iPad without loosing any data. Note, this will only work on the computer it last synced with. Here’s how:
1. Configurator is useless in reactivating a locked iPad. You will only be able to completely reformat the iPad using Configurator. If that’s ok with you, go for it – otherwise don’t waste your time trying to figure it out.
2. Open iTunes with the iPad disconnected.
3. Connect the iPad to the computer and wait for it to show up in the devices section in iTunes.
4. Click on the iPad name when it appears and you will be given the option to restore a backup or setup as a new iPad (since it is locked).
5. Click ‘Setup as new iPad’ and then click restore.
6. The iPad will start backing up before it does the full restore and sync. CANCEL THE BACKUP IMMEDIATELY. You do this by clicking the small x in the status window in iTunes.
7. When the backup cancels, it immediately starts syncing – cancel this as well using the same small x in the iTunes status window.
8. The first stage in the restore process unlocks the iPad, you are basically just canceling out the restore process as soon as it reactivates the iPad.
If done correctly, you will experience no data loss and the result will be a reactivated iPad. I have now tried this with about 5 iPads that were locked identically by students and each time it worked like a charm.

It sounds as if your Windows computer is not detecting the iPad in iTunes. Let's see if we can get that fixed up.

I plugged my iPad into an electrical outlet to charge it. It asked if I wanted to update. I replied yes. Now all that shows up on the screen is the image of the end of a charge cord that plugs into the iPad and an iTunes icon. Thinking that meant I should plug into the computer, I did so and got the message: iTunes has detected an iPad in recovery mode. You must restore this iPad before it can be used with iTunes. I have done the restore, but want to know why this occured.
There's no possible way anyone here could determine why this has happened to your own device as there could be one of of many possibilities.

I try to update IOS 6 to my ipad 2/ wf/3g and after about half of the procedure stopped ... then I try to reconnected to the itunes and say "iTunes has detected an iPad in recovery mode.
