IPad in the Enterprise

Hi all,
Do you know if there is a way to limit the enterprise users to download only the applications that are "accepted" by the company? Is there kinda a config profile to set up?
Any help greatly appreciated.
Thanks and cheers,
Pierreg256

Dave, Tom,
What I understand from the discussion I'm having with you both (and correct me if I'm wrong) is that there are two distinct channels to provide users with apps :
- the apple appstore : gives users gazillion applications to download and install
- one's company 'private' appstore : set up using enterprise over the air application distribution.
The two channels can live together on the same device without interfering one with each other.
But, when you want to apply restrictions at the application level, though, the configurations profiles you can apply are far too generic and prevent a company to list a predefined set of "allowed" apple appstore applications the users can download on their own.
Whereas distributing your own applications and provisioning profiles via email or OTA is more fine grained and allows you to deliver only the ones you really want to selected users.
As you stated, i will definitely contact an apple sales rep to see if I can get more info.
I really want to thank you both in helping me find an "acceptable" solution to my current issue. This is the first time I join this discussion forum, and I already get very good answers! Thanks guys! I really appreciate and get back on this forum for my next questions.
Cheers,
Pierre.

  • IPad on the Enterprise network

    Hello All -
I am looking to get some more information on the iPad in the enterprise. We are currently using Cisco wireless running a corporate SSID using WPA+WPA2 with AES and 802.1X.
Is anyone running iPad's in the 802.1X enterprise? We use a Device CA for all of our devices, is it possible to use this on the iPad or do you have to use client CA?
I am using the iPad configuration utility to try and configure my test iPad, but it doesn't seem to work like I need it to. I get to a certain point and it wants username and password. I do not want a user to have to login, so this would lead me to believe client CA needs to be used and not Device CA.
    Can anyone help me out?

First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  It could take well over an hour!  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow the on-screen directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore, go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.  You WILL lose all of your data (game scores, etc,) but, for the most part, you can redownload apps and music without be charged again.  Also, if you have IOS-7, read this.

  • Personal iPads in the enterprise - keeping work/personal apps separate

    Hi All,
I work in IT for a school district.  Recently, we got a grant for iPad training.  As part of that training, every teacher that attended the classes was given an iPad.  The problem is, that because of the way the grant was structured, the iPads ended up belonging to the teachers personally instead of belonging to the school district.  Since all these teachers now own their own iPads, we do not want to spend the money to buy them a second "work" iPad.
I am trying to come up with a solution that allows those teachers to use their own iPads in our school environment.  Specifically, I am looking for a way to be able to purchase needed iPad apps with school funds, install them on the users' personal ipads, but prevent the user from backing up/syncing those apps with their home Mac/PC.
The best idea we have come up with so far is to create a generic Apple ID for each teacher, such as "schoolname-01", "schoolname-02", etc.  The school's IT department would then be the only ones who would have the passwords for those accounts.  The IT department would then download and install the school owned apps on the teachers' personal iPads using one of the generic "schoolname-xx" accounts.  The theory is that the iPad registers and stores the Apple ID used to purchase each app, so we will be able to tell what apps are bought with school money and what apps are bought by the teacher for personal use.
Obviously, this is not an ideal solution, but we haven't been able to come up with a better one.  The biggest question we have is this:  each of these personal iPads is going to be sync'd with the teacher's home Mac/PC.  Since the home Mac/PC will not be authorized for the generic "schoolnamexx" Apple ID that was used to install the school apps,  will that mean that only the teacher's personal apps will be backed up when they sync with iTunes, or will iTunes back up every app, regaurdless of what Apple ID was used to purchase it?
Also, since an iPad can only sync with one Mac/PC, how can we back up the apps purchased with school funds?  Theoretically, we can re-download them from the app store, but only so long as they are still available for sale.
I would appreciate feedback from anyone who has had success integrating personal iPads into a work environment.

    Hi gyrhead,
Thanks for the information.  I understand that the teachers will not be able to transfer app purchases from the school Apple ID to their personal Apple ID.  The concern we have is this:  what do we do when a teacher with a personal iPad with school software on it leaves the district?  I know we can re-download the software purchased with the school Apple ID onto a new iPad, but how do we get the school software off the teachers iPad?
If a teacher leaves under bad circumstances, there is not much hope that we will be able to remove the software from their iPad.  If their is a solution to remotely wipe apps installed under a specific Apple ID I would love to know about it.
However, if a teacher leaves and it is an amicable parting, we are hoping that the teacher will allow us to remove the school software from their iPad.  However, even if we remove the software from the iPad, couldn't the teacher just restore it from their home Mac/PC?  If the teacher syncs his/her iPad to their home computer, will it back up just the apps purchased under their personal Apple ID or will it also back up the apps purchased under the school Apple ID as well?  If it is the latter, then I don't see how we could prevent the teacher from reinstalling the school apps, even after we remove them from the iPad.
As long as the school can still install the apps it purchased on a new iPad, that last issue is not a huge concern for me.  However, the upper management/legal guys want to know the answer to this one.

  • IPad Backups and Enterprise PC Management

In my company, we image Windows PCs as a deployment strategy. In some cases when troubleshooting a problem, it is easier and quicker for our end users to simply reimage the PC rather then spending hours troubleshooting the problem.
As we deploy iPads to the enterprise, we will need to have iTunes added to our image. If someone inserts their iPad into their PC running iTunes, iTunes will backup the unit problem. If say the following week, we need to replace their PC (either with a new one or we reimage their PC), the next time they plug in their iPad into the PC, I believe it will wipe the unit, because when the unit was activated, it was "married" to the original PC it was activated on. Is there a way to prevent iPads from wiping themselves when a new PC is provisioned for an employee or their existing PC is reimaged? If not, am I able to simply copy the iTunes folder from the original PC to the new one to keep the "marriage"?

If you update iTunes to the latest version on the machine you plan to retire or wipe, then copy the itunes folder from the user profile in Windows or Mac. On the new machine or freshly imaged machine, update the iTunes so that it's running the same version. Just copy that itunes folder back to the proper location under the users profile and all should be ok. the kay here is to be sure to run the same version on the old and new, hence why I suggest updating prior to moving so that you have a one to one version. going from an old to a newer version will cause issues. Likely due to the database iTunes uses being a different version.

  • We have the enterprise system on our office computer and I have one iphone and 2 ipads. One iphone and one ipad2 is mine and the other is my wife's.  We share a common password for the ipads. How do I update to ios5?

I think this is rather complicated and I really need some help. I am the pastor of the church and we have the enterprise system.  We use an exchange server if that means anything. I began with an iPhone 4 that connects with our system. And now I have to iPads. One of the iPads is registered in my name and the other in my wife's.
I'm confused as to how to update to IOS 5. Do I keep my password is the same for both my wife's and my iPad?
Also because we are on the enterprise system, my notes from Outlook do not wirelessly connect from my work computer to my iPhone and to my iPad. I have been told that they have not worked this out yet. Will this change with the new operating system?
It all is very confusing to me and I would appreciate some help. Thank you very much

  • IPad Keyboard in the Enterprise

    All,
I have a user that likes to use his bluetooth keyboard with his iPad, but needs a "Page Up" or "Page Down" feature. I reviewed and suggested the information on this page: http://www.apple.com/support/pages/shortcuts/
I suggested the use of Option-Up Arrow and Option-Down Arrow as a substitute, but I am unable to locate the "Option Key", nor can I locate any other substitute. Would someone be able to shed some light on this for me?

Are you talking about the Pages app specifically? If so, best to search/ask here:

The new Business Volume Purchase Program is pretty interesting...it can be used to centrally purchase and distribute paid ( not free) items from the AppStore.  We are getting setup to use it.  You can keep an eye on licenses etc.  You can also use a single centralized form of payment.

  • Airprint in the Enterprise across subnets [Solution]

This is a message to help folks figure out how to setup
Airprint across wired/wireless subnets. Hopefully it will help a few people.
Airprint was designed to work with Bonjour on a local subnet/broadcast domain.
To print in the enterprise where we have wired/wireless infrastructure,
we need to use a DNS server to find the printer resources
    Assumptions:
    Our internal domain is: foocompany.com
We create a new subdomain: bonjour.foocompany.com
Creating a new subdomain allows up to apply DNS views so we can show print/bonjour services in
    close proximity of the user.
You have a CUPS printer server (linux/apple) running at printserver.bonjour.foocompany.com
    1. Setup a DNS server
If you setting up a test domain server, you can setup forwarding to your primary production server.
This way all DNS queries continue to work
In your named.conf file setup forwarding
    options {
    forwarders { YOURTOPNAMESERVER_IPADDR; YOURTOPNAMESERVER_IPADDR2; };
    forward first;
allow-query-cache { any; }; // Allow client queries from other subnet to query from cache
    Create a new zone, "bonjour.foocompany.com"
    zone "bonjour.foocompany.com." { type master; file "/etc/bind/db.home"; };
    zone "foocompany.com" { type forward; forward only; forwarders { YOURTOPNAMESERVER_IPADDR; YOURTOPNAMESERVER_IPADDR2; }; };
Create the following entries to support bonjour browsing
    #=======DNS====Begin======
    lb.dns-sd.udp IN PTR @
    b.dns-sd.udp IN PTR @
    dr.dns-sd.udp IN PTR @

    2. Setup CUPS
Add printers to the CUPS server.
Enable access to the printer queue from remote machines,
GUI: "System->Admin->Printing->Server->Server Setting: Allow printing from the internet"
Also make sure the following lines are present in /etc/cups/cupsd.conf
    # Allow remote access
    Port 631
    Listen /var/run/cups/cups.sock
    AccessLog syslog
    AccessLogLevel all
    LogLevel debug
    MaxLogSize 0

    BrowseAllow all
    BrowseRemoteProtocols CUPS
    BrowseAddress @LOCAL
    BrowseLocalProtocols CUPS dnssd
    BrowseProtocols all
    DefaultAuthType Basic
    3. Change iPAD configs
Add your DNS server as the first DNS server in the network settting page.
Add "bonjour.foocompany.com" to the DNS domains to search
    4. Test printing
    Open up Photos application.
    Select a picture
    Select "Send To->Print"
Select "Printer", now a list of printer names should show up as defined in the DNS server
Select a printer and hit "Print"
Fast task switch to Print Center to verify print job is being sent

    Update for ios 8:
With ios 8 it appears that _printer and _ipp are no longer equivalent. For this to work it looks like you have to use _ipp._tcp
Also - the underscore characters are important and they are missing from the example above.
Last - you can use the "note" field to add a second line that is displayed in smaller text below the printer name in ios 8.
    Here is an updated template:
    ####Printer TEMPLATE
    cups._sub._ipp._tcp IN PTR NAMEX._ipp._tcp
    universal._sub._ipp._tcp IN PTR NAMEX._ipp._tcp
    NAMEX._ipp._tcp IN SRV 0 0 631 PRINTSERVERDNSNAME

  • ICloud Usage In The Enterprise

Forgive me if I've posted this in the wrong location, but it seemed to be the best suited area...
With the announcement of iCloud, I've been trying to find information on how it will be managed on devices that are used in the enterprise? The company I work for has approximately 200 iPad users and 300 iPhone 4 users that sync their corporate mail, calendar and contacts to their devices.
Each of these users has tethered their device to their own personal iTunes account so they can add music, apps, video, etc to the device as they wish. We secure these devices using a MobileIron appliance along with Apple MDM certificates that allow us to implement security policies on the devices.
If these users choose to sign up for iCloud, does anyone yet know if it will only allow your me.com account to sync to the cloud? The last thing we would want is for these users to have their corporate mail/contacts/calendars synched to the devices and then simultaneously synched up to iCloud.
Anyone have any suggestions on how we might combat this? Or if it will even be possible to sync accounts via iCloud for anything other than me.com accounts? Thanks!

    HI All,
Actually I face the same problem, only mine is using Apple MDM on Lion Server. We plan to deploy 2000 or more iphone 3gs on company cost. Currently in progress and already around 900 devices live using inhouse corporate application.
Our challenge is on security administration things. Wondering if there is somekind like iCloud that we can use in corporate to track the location in case of lost. we are now experiencing already two device lost on duty.
Currently all devices that we already deployed are registered to iCloud using one Apple-ID, no problem on registration process. However when I open iCloud, only limited devices was listed, I think just about 90 devices on the list. Unfortunately the two devices that reported lost are not on the list. So I feel hopeless now.
While MDM can only do Wipe and other things, but can not tracking the location.
Appreciate if someone can give me a clue the alternative to overcome those issue. Thanks.
    Regards

  • IPad2 Uses in the Enterprise

What are some of the best uses of ipad2 in the enterprise beyond email?

"Best" is situational, but here are some things I use my iPad for in my company:
    - Note taking
    - Presentations
    - Task management
    - Research on the web (especially to look up points or data during meetings)
    - Keeping my calendar
There will be many more uses depending on the company or organization involved. For instance, many medical organizations are using iPads to replace the traditional patient chart and hand-written doctors' notes. This may provide some additional ideas:

  • ITunes not allowed in the Enterprise!

Ok so I want to sync data but iTunes is forbidden on our machines. I don't think we are the only company with this policy so how then is the iPad ready for enterprise use?

Sure, you could possible pair down iTunes for installation.
My company (having a globally installed base of 35,000+ workstations) will install and support BB software on a specific employee’s assigned desktop/laptop and is willing to do the same for iTunes to support the iPhone.
Our mobile phone users don’t create content on their phones. The BBs and such are generally only used for voice, email, calendars, notes, contacts.
Because of the way these devices are used, we're not required to install and support BB software on every workstation through-out the enterprise that a BB user may come into contact with throughout their business day.
However, the iPad is much more that a Black Berry/Smart Phone/iPhone.
Our employees that are asking for iPads are looking to eliminate the need to carry a laptop to access Intranet web sites, deliver presentations, check and compose email, create simple documents (Word, Excel, PowerPoint compatible).
Any content that is created on the iPad needs to be accessible and shareable via USB and not just over 3G and WiFi. The vast majority of our global operation does not have WiFi coverage (and won’t anytime in the near future). 3G coverage is not always available or may be spotty (many locations only have the Edge network available and or no cell coverage due to the buildings structure).
As such, the inability to mount the iPad as a USB storage device to share content without iTunes severely restricts the device.
Apple, yourself and others chime in and say just install iTunes.
There is a very significant cost in deploying, supporting and maintaining iTunes on all of the workstations that iPad users may (or may not) need to connect to across a large enterprise - security, lifecycle, and deployment planning; QA and Certification the current and future application versions on each of the various workstation models (images) and environments (physical & virtual); deploy the application (tech and push installs); etc.
Is Apple, you or they going to pay for all of this this?
Quite frankly, there is no valid technical reason that the iPad cannot be plugged in and mounted as a generic USB flash drive to enable the sharing or files (other than Apples possible business desire to force us to us iTunes).
Until this is corrected and broad support for SSL VPN is available, we will not seriously consider the iPad for anything but very small well defined installations having a limited business scope.

  • Licensing of apps for multiple iPads in an enterprise environment

I have 21 iPads in an enterprise environment, syncing to one iPad.  Am I violating licensing terms.? These are 21 iPads used by 21 board members on each Friday.  Do I need to purchase this app 21 times?  If so how?

Yes, you may be. The applicable terms of sale are these:
(ii) If you are a commercial enterprise or educational institution, you may download and sync an App Store Product for use by either (a) a single individual on one or more iOS Devices you own or control or (b) multiple individuals, on a single shared iOS Device you own or control. For example, a single employee may use the Product on both the employee's iPhone and iPad, or multiple students may serially use the Product on a single iPad located at a resource center or library.
If these iPads are under your own control and you just loan them out for the board meetings, then that might fall under clause (a), though I'm no lawyer and I don't speak for Apple.
If these iPads are kept by the board members for their use, then your company needs to purchase the app twenty-one times, and the only way at present to do that is through twenty-one different iTunes Store accounts. So each board member should probably buy through his or her own iTunes Store account, and get reimbursed by the company if appropriate. I know this is awkward; perhaps Apple will come up with a better mechanism in the future.
    Regards.

  • Download iOS 8 once and use it to upgrade all iPads in the network

Is it possible to download iOS8 only once and use it to upgrade all iPads in the same LAN?
I tried the following methods and they are just not working:
    1. Connect an iPads Mini with Retina Display to the iTunes on Mac.  I chose Download Only. Once downloaded the iPad Software Upgrade, I upgraded the connected iPad to iOS8.  Then I connect another iPad (used to be on another Mac) to the same iTunes.  I had to download iOS 8 again.  It's not using the same downloaded iOS 8 file.
    2. I turned on the Caching Service (not Software Upgrade Service, i.e. for Mac Software) on the Mac Mini Server from the Server app.  I then repeat step 1 above and got the same result.  It seems that the Caching Service does not cache the iOS 8  Software Upgrade like what it does for other apps.  (I think I may need to use some Apple Scripts but I have no such experience.)

    Ivan H wrote:
It's for the family.  Every member has 2-3 iOS devices to upgrade.
I agree with Csound on that, a family, even with a lot of devices will have to individually update.  There are enough nuances in the iOS for different devices that you need to download for each.  If you had 200 iPad 2's then there might be an enterprise way...but not a family with a mix of devices.
