Ipad Inbox (non-Icloud account) says I have 1,360 messages

I have a non-Icloud email account on my iPad Air.  A couple of weeks ago the inbox for that account said I have 1,360 unread emails.  I have looked in the inbox, the deleted, etc. folders and cannot find the emails.  I can successfully delete any new emails.  I have checked in "Settings" on my iPad.  I do not have this problem with the same account on my MacBook Pro.  I have looked at my account on the email provider's website, nothing.  Does anyone have any ideas?

I think you are misunderstanding or perhaps, I didn't explain clearly enough. I apologize.
I want you to force close the mail app first. This might be more helpful than my explanation.

After you have close the mail app, reset the iPad. See the second part of Apple's support article here.
Turn your iOS device off and on (restart) and reset
I don't know if these steps will work for you, I'm assuming that you are getting an incorrect reading due to an iOS glitch and typically these steps help.
