You will have to force the iPad into recovery mode and data will be lost unless you have a backup.

  • IPad crashed after attempting to install iOS 5.1

I attempted to update my iPad to iOS 5.1.  When I did, I got a blue screen.  I can not start my iPad, and it appears to have crashed.  It won't even start up enough to restore.  Any ideas?

I tried that.  The iPad doesn't boot up enough for iTunes to recognize the iPad.  I get an apple for a few seconds, and then the blue screen (sometimes green). The only way I can get the iPad to start/shutdown is to hard boot it too.  Sometimes I get a line through the screen before it goes blue.  The iPad was working great until I attempted the update.

  • IPhone 4 Stopped Working since attempting to Install iOS 4.2

Hi, I have attempted to install iOS 4.2 tonight and it seems to have stopped my phone from working.. All i have on the screen is the iTunes icon and an image of the USB cable?
If i connect my iphone to my laptop it makes a beep (3 times) and then nothing happpens.
Before i downloaded and tried to install iOS 4.2 my iphone was working as i would expect it to on iTunes 10.
Can anyone please help me get my phone back and get me updated?
    Thanks guys!
    Steven

i would not be that hot on windows platform, but i wonder would a restart of your laptop help ?
did you manage to download the 4.2 file ?
if so was the phone connected when it was downloading ? its possible itunes has indeed downloaded the 4.2 file but the phone is stuck in recovey mode. if so then you can download tinyumbrella and when you run it there will be an option to kick out of recovery mode. might be worth a try.
    NOTE
if you run tinyumbrella it may add the gs.apple.com entry to your hosts file, so
if you use tinyumbrella to boot iphone out of recovery, make sure to disable "edit host file" in advanced options or it'll re-write it each time you launch it and youll have same problem again....
one other thing, you say you " searched " for the gs.apple.com entry....did you actually open the hosts file in notepad and look ?
if possible can you post up a screenshot of your hosts file.
sorry for all the questions but it might give me some clues
    ps
you could try this courtesy of Leonard.dk on another thread...
    1. connect the dead phone to another pc with itunes turned on
    2. follow the notifications on that itunes
    3. restore the phone
    4. disconnect the phone after the restoration without clicking any buttons of that itunes
    5. connect the phone to my own pc
    6. my own pc can recognize the phone and itunes will try to restore the backup of my phone
    7. restore from the backup on my pc
    8. sync everything (tick all the apps in itunes manually since there is no such button to select all) and reorganize all the apps
    9. after ca. 25 min, the phone is back to the previous sw version

Wiped our old iPad 1 clean, now can't install iOS from iTunes using laptop PC (W Vista).  iTunes does not "see" the device.  Tried uninstalling and installing iTunes on laptop.  Also bought new USB cable.  The iPad is charging, but that's all it does.  Just want to get it operating again for browsing and e-reading.

OK.  You merely erased the content and settings.  The IOS is still there.
If it has NEVER been jailbroke, here are some standard repair procedures.  From what you've already stated, my guess is that you'll end up with Recovery Mode described in the last paragraph.
First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  It could take well over an hour!  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow the on-screen directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore (or it doesn't help), go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.  You WILL lose all of your data (game scores, etc,) but, for the most part, you can redownload apps and music without being charged again.  Also, read this.

    4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen. When this screen appears you can release the Home button:
Are you releasing the home button when you see the connect to iTunes screen? Does iTunes start on its own? If it doesn't - start iTunes yourself.
