IPad is locked with a pass ode

I have bought a iPad air for my grandmother and went to set up Internet connection for her today. It's now locked with a security pass code that was never set. I have tried all suggestions on here to reset but can't connect to the Internet or unlock. Please help!

Hello Lissm,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
From your post I understand that you have been locked out from the iPad due to a forgotten passcode.  Please take a look at the support article below to learn more about passcodes, and what to do in the case of a forgotton passcode.

I have a 16GM Mini IPad.  The screen won't swipe.  I tried resetting it but that didn't work.  I attempted to connect to ITunes to try a restore but I can't do that.  This is because the IPad is locked with a pass code which I can't enter because I can't swipe.  Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this?

If Ralph's suggestion doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  It could take well over an hour!  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow the on-screen directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore (or it doesn't help), go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.  You WILL lose all of your data (game scores, etc,) but, for the most part, you can redownload apps and music without being charged again.  Also, if you have IOS-7, read this.

If the screen is completely shattered why bother to try and restore the phone?

Oh - I see that you have that article linked to your post above. Read the entire paragraph in item #1. It tells you what to do if it is asking for a passcode.

my IPad is locked with a passcode. how should I solve that problem?

If you don't have the passcode to get into your iPad you will need to restore it to factory settings

  • HT4061 Forget  iPhone password, when connect to computer "iTunes could not connect to the iPhone because it is locked with a pass code. You must enter pass code on the iPhone before it can be used with iTunes."

Forget  iPhone password, when connect to computer "iTunes could not connect to the iPhone because it is locked with a pass code. You must enter pass code on the iPhone before it can be used with iTunes."

You have to restore it using a computer with iTunes per the knowledge base article above.
With iOS 7, if you have Find My Phone turned on you can login to iCloud from a computer and send an erase signal to the iPhone to clear it...that will erase all content and settings.

  • HT1212 iPad still locked with password even after erasing the device, please help!

My iPad was locked because I forgot my password; I followed the step by step instructions to recover my iPad but it still asks me for a password to access the device even though the device should have been erased. Please help!?!

Is this how you do it?
    1. Turn off iPad
    2. Turn on computer and launch iTunes (make sure you have the latest version of iTune)
    3. Plug USB cable into computer's USB port
    4. Hold Home button down and plug the other end of cable into docking port. Do not release button until you see picture of iTunes and plug (very important)
    5. Release Home button.
    ON COMPUTER
    6. iTunes has detected iPad in recovery mode. You must restore this iPad before it can be used with iTunes.
    7. Select "Restore iPad"...
    Note: Data will be lost

  • My Ipad has locked with Itunes logo and cable displayed on a black screen.    Cant do anything

My Ipad has locked on a black screen with only the Itunes music logo together  with an arrow and a cable white photo display.    Turning it on and off achieves nothing, only the Itunes circle and cable appear each time.     What can I do to rectify?

I uploaded iOS 7 and the ipad came up with a black screen with pictures of iTunes logo and power cord.  It wouldn't turn off or respond to any actions.  A terrifying moment.  I followed some suggestions from these discussions, connected iPad to Macbook with iTunes open and prayed.  It took 3 separate times to completely reset the iPad, because of several "errors" that would occur throughout the lengthy process.  This necessity to completely reset my iPad (and it is very shakily alive now, I fear) was a direct result of uploading the new OS.  I am furious.  What is going on with Apple?  I see this has happened to people for quite a while now.  Good Lord.

  • HT201263 my daughters ipod is disabled and says connect to itunes, but iTunes says it can't connect to the ipod because it is locked with a pass code what do i do???

My daughters ipod is disabled and says 'connect to iTunes' but when we connect to iTunes it says ' cannot connect to the ipod because it is locked with a passcode ' but we can't unlock it because it is disabled, how do we fix this???

Place the iOS device in Recovery Mode and then connect to your computer and restore via iTunes. The iPod will be erased.
iOS: Wrong passcode results in red disabled screen
If recovery mode does not work try DFU mode.

  • IPad Activation Lock with Mystery Email?

    Hello all,
I have been searching online now for 2 days trying to find an answer to this question but haven't yet had any luck.
My father bought an iPad, brand new from Best Buy in January of 2013. I was with him. He has loved it and used it almost every day. Recently, he upgraded to iOS 8. About 5 days ago, my father decided to update to iOS 8.1. When he did, the "Plug into iTunes logo" showed up and he did as instructed: plugged it into the computer/iTunes. When he did, iTunes told him he needed to restore it, which would erase everything on his iPad. Not wanting to do that, he ejected it from the computer.
This is the part where it gets a bit confusing. The iPad then told him that the current iPad was registered to someone, and if that someone was him, he would need to put in his iCloud information. Not a problem, as he put in iTunes account username and password that he would frequently use to buy apps, movies, or songs on his iPad since January of 2013. But the iPad informed him that the information was incorrect. So he changed his password, doing the password email reset link on the computer, thinking he may have put it in wrong. Still no access. In fact, the iPad said that the iPad was already registered to another account. His iTunes login that he had used for all the purchases was [email protected], but the iPad said it was registered to [email protected]. The security questions, which he was sure about, also provided us with no luck, as they said the information was incorrect. It also said his birthday was incorrect.
Once we called AppleCare, they said the iPad was registered to [email protected], NOT [email protected] (wasn't on the phone with them at this point, otherwise I would have pointed out that the iPad says "[email protected]".) They asked my dad another security question, one he is certain he has never answered before. "The first celebrity you have ever met." My dad hasn't met any celebrities, so he has no idea what that could be. And, they said, no back up email was listed on the account, so the email reset wouldn't work. Even though he has reset his iTunes password several times, using the email method.
The AppleCare technician basically said, "You need a receipt to prove it's yours." The iPad was purchased, new (I was there) from Best Buy 2 years ago. He has been using it for 2 years, with no problems, buying many things with the email address that he assumed was his iTunes/iCloud account. Now he has a locked iPad with no way of knowing how to get it unlocked.
tl;dr My dad had an iPad for 2 years, no problems. Updates to iOS 8.1, says it's locked under a different email than his iTunes email, one with @icloud.com at the end of it. AppleCare says it's registered to his iTunes account email, iPad says otherwise. No receipt, but bought brand new from Best Buy (with cash however) in January of 2012. Security question's answer to reset password is unknown, and "no email is listed" to reset the password (even if he has reset his iTunes password many times).

People often use different Apple and iCloud IDs.  Never understood why, but they do.
I get that this situation *****.  But from Apple's perspective (and I'm not accusing here) anyone can come into possession of a device and create a scenario as you've described.  Apple can't waver on their rules on resetting devices.  They could be helping a thief, well, get away with stealing.  So Apple is for the right reasons not flexible on this at all.
