Ipad mac mini combo possible?

Hello all
This is my first post
I am itching to buy a mac mini and was about to when the ipad came out. So here I see a beutiful display (with a keyboard dock) that would be perfect for a mac mini.
The mac mini needs a display, keyboard and mouse. ipad has display and keyboard.
The combo reminds me of the powerbook duo i think it was. Go mobile with the ipad and back up stuff on the mac mini. It sounds too good to be true.
But the question is - does this combo have a market of more than me?
Any ideas?

AFAIK, the iPad cannot be used as a "just a monitor and keyboard" for any computer. So your idea would not work, at least not the way I believe you're thinking about it.
The analogy of the Powerbook Duo is more akin to the Macbook Air than the Mini. The Duo included a screen and keyboard like any other notebook, just lighter without the optical drive, etc. The Duo also ran the same MacOS as the desktops and other notebooks, unlike the iPad/iPod Touch/iPhone.
The idea of a "transportable remote screen" was tried in the Windows world several years ago with products like the [Viewsonic Airpanel|http://hk.viewsonic.com/en/products/airpanel/index15.php]. This was a tablet screen that ran a version of Microsoft PocketPC, just like other Windows Mobile PDAs of the time. This is similar to how the iPad is running an OS similar to the iPhone and iPod Touch, but is not exactly the same as the desktop OSX. The Airpanel would connect directly to the PC as a traditional monitor when docked, but when you pulled it from the dock, you would use the Remote Desktop protocol to remote control the Windows PC. (This of course, assumed you has some sort of Wi-Fi connectivity in your house.) It never really took off. On of the issues was that the Airpanels were too expensive. Similar in size and pricing to the iPad, but realize you're getting a only 10" screen for several hundred dollars, where even back then, you could get a 15" screen for around $200. (Nowdays, $200 will get you a 20" or larger screen.)
There are apps to let your iPhone/iPod Touch remote control a Mac, but you still need a screen/keyboard/mouse to do the initial setup of the Mac. (i.e.: VNC, a.k.a. Screen Sharing.) So assuming that you can run those apps on the iPad, you could do similar to the Airpanel. Some exceptions:
- You don't really get a "directly connected" screen when docked.
- And the iPad's directly docking keyboard wouldn't work for the Mini. I thought I heard that there would be a wireless keyboard for the iPad, but I doubt you could use the one keyboard for both the Mini and iPad without having to do some "relinking" of some sort. (IOW, it wouldn't be convinient.)
- Remote control is likely not to be very fast, depending on what app and how it's connecting. This might not be a big deal if you're doing light work like email or web surfing. (But you can do email and web surfing on the iPad directly, so the "need" to remote control the Mac is reduced.)
In general, these apps are a complement to, not a replacement for, the traditional screen/keyboard/mouse. But the advantage that the iPad and this idea has is time. When this was tried in the Windows world, the Pocket PC CPUs were much slower, so the remote experience was really bad. With the fast CPU and screen of the iPad, and faster 802.11n, the experience will likely be much better. But I have my doubts that there is much of a market for this. But who know, maybe this is the "killer app" that will make the iPad the "must have" for 2010.

  • IPad+Mac Mini+iDisplay?

So iDisplay turns iPad a second monitor for a Mac. Would it then possible to use iPad as the PRIMARY monitor for Mac Mini? That would save me a ton of money.

I say probably not because you lose control of the ipad to itunes when you sync.
Also, based on the setup procedures, you'd need another monitor for the setups.
For times other than syncing, I am not sure, but in reading the reviews, it's very slow to respond.
Also it has 412 1-star ratings and only 32 5-star ratings.

  • Factory Defaults in Mac Mini and Possible Trade-Up?

Hi, beforehand, please direct all answers if possible to [email protected] Thanks in advance.
I have questions that have probably been answered or maybe not, so I'm sorry in advance.
I'd like to restore my Mac Mini to its factory defaults. Since I'm a Windows-user-almost-turned-Mac-user, I'm still learning, but it's just difficult for me. The reason I'd like to do this is so that I can hopefully sell it and eventually buy a Macbook with the money I get on it.
That being said, I'd also like to ask if there is possibly a way I can bring my Mac Mini to, say, a local Apple Store and "trade up" to a Macbook--and pay whatever difference with cash. Again, I'm very new to this, so thank you all for your forebearance.
I hope to hear from any of you soon. Have a great day and weekend, and Happy Father's in advance to you fathers.

Easy enough to do, insert the install disc, restart the Mac and hold the C key down. You can select erase and install, which wipes everything out, or archive and install which preserves your home folder.

If you are in the 14 day purchase period then yes you can do a return/purchase. After that no, and in fact I don't know any computer company that will let you trade up to another model after you go beyond the return period.
The mini and Macbook are nearly identical in specs and the speed difference in the mini's clock rate is minimal. If you need a portable solution I suggest you purchase the Macbook as opposed to the mini. I own both and I'm very pleased with both of them and I think either one you buy will be a great computer to work and play with

  • Compatibility iPad - Mac mini?

In mobile use, can we use a new iPad as a screen to a Mac mini?

There are reportedly some apps that allow you to,connect to a computer and control the screen, but as a complete replacement for the monitor on something like a Mini, no, not really.

  • 2 x 1TB hard disk in mac mini server, possible?

    Hi to all of you,
I see the Mac Mini comes with 2x 500GB hard disk. Since you can now find 1TB hard disk on the Internet I was wondering if the mac mini server would support replacing the 2x500GB HDD by 2 x 1TB HDD?
    Anyone has tried it?
    Would it support it?
    Dag

I wonder the same thing. Power isn't the issue, though, all these drives should draw low enough power that the Mac Mini should be able to handle it, neither should cooling be an issue, since the Mac Mini is AFAIK not passively cooled.
However, most laptop 2.5" drives these days are 9.5mm high, the 1TB drives have the older, these days less common 12.5mm high form factor. So the real question is: does the Mac Mini provide the ability to mount 12.5mm high drives.
FW drives are NOT an option: less performance, and external cables are a recipe for disaster, particularly with any sort of server. Lose cables, corroded connectors, pulling on the wrong cable, separate power supplies that can independently fail, etc. etc.
    I'd rather have a 1TB server with a RAID-1 configuration than with a RAID-0 setup...
...and while the thing is open, toss 8GB RAM in...

  • Mac Mini - Toshiba DLP?

Hi, I would like to get rid of Time Warner Cable for good so I am thinking of getting either a Mac Mini or possibly a Macbook to hook up to my Toshiba DLP projection TV. So, my first question is - will this TV be acceptable to use?
My second question is - Mini or Macbook? I need a new laptop so if I could kill two birds with one stone I wouldn't mind. But if the Mini would work better then I'll go with that.

If your point is to use the computer primarily as a media center, a mini would be the better choice than a MacBook. There are however more questions to be answered.
Is your internet connection not via Time Warner Cable?
Are you expecting to use the internet as your source of video?
What connections does your TV offer?
These will all impact your best choices to buy. Depending on your needs, you might be better to get an Apple TV and a MacBook, or to just get a mini (and perhaps an iPhone).

  • Downgrading a 2011 mac mini to Snow Leopard

So here's my situation. I've got a Mac Mini that came loaded with Lion. I bought it to use with software that requires Power PC compatibility. I unfortunately found out about Lion no longer supporting Power PC far too late after purchasing the mini. I've got a copy of Snow Leopard and I'd like to partition the hard drive to have Leopard running on one partition and Lion on the other. The issue I'm running into now is the lack of an external CD drive for the mini. I've got a friend's 2009 Mac Book Pro that I've been using for it's shared CD drive set up. However I keep running into issues actually installing Snow Leopard onto the Mini. Mainly when I try this, it says that the system isn't compatible. I've got a copy of Parallels, but I've yet to open the box since I want to be sure that using that would work.
So the question really boils down to is this even feasible? If so, how do I go about doing it.

It might be possible if you can find a DVD with a version of Snow Leopard that is new enough to boot your Mac Mini. Possible yes but highly unlikely because the vast majority of them are to old of version to do it.
It might be simplier to get older hardware that originally shipped with Snow Leopard instead.
What is this software that requires PowerPC support?

  • Mac mini crashes after inserting CD.

I have a Late 2006 Mac mini (Combo Drive).
A few days ago, I was trying to import a music CD into iTunes. It recognises the CD and its tracks fine, but importing the CD (or even playing it) triggers a system-wide crash, forcing me to turn it off with the power button. Tried another CD, this time it wouldn't even get past recognising the CD before crashing.

You can use iPad as the display for your mac mini. but it will be your secondary display .. i.e. you need to have a primary display other that iPad.
    use teamviwer for that.

  • Why does exchange server work for MSN Mail on iPad and not on Mac Mini?

My MSN Mail works great on my iPad and iPhone but will not work on my Mac Mini? I input the same server address but it will not connect. I've even tried m.hotmail.com, etc. but not joy.
    Any ideas please?

At the moment the only way to do this between a Mac and iPad with Outlook/Hotmail would be if you used webmail on the Mac. Anything you do in webmail would be shown on the iPad and vice versa.
It used to be possible with the free GMail to use IMAP on the Mac and ActiveSync on the iPhone/iPad which would have been the sort of solution you are looking for. Now with the free GMail you have to use IMAP on the iPhone/iPad as well (ActiveSync is no longer available in the free GMail). IMAP would sync the changes still.
Unfortunately as IMAP is not available for Outlook.com/Hotmail you cannot do the samething as a workaround.
You could get a free GMail account and have it collect all your Hotmail messages, then you could use IMAP on both.

  • Questions about mac mini iTunes server, streaming to macbook pro, ipads, etc.

I'm thinking about getting a mac mini to work with my NAS as a iTunes server. I have a bunch of questions about this. I will have two iPhones, a few iPads, and a laptop that will be accessing the files. I have iTunes match. This is basically to keep an always on computer for hosting the music/movies. My questions are as follows . . .
#1 Are there any good, comprehensive guides to show you how to do this?
#2 Can the movies be accessed when not at home on the shared network?
#3 Can the iPads or the macbook pro download the shared movies to be stored locally?
#4 Back to #3, how will it work on my macbook pro with listening to music (I have iTunes match)? Say i go to library and I break out my macbook pro and I don't have internet. What happens if I download music while at home onto my macbook pro to listen to it when I go to the library? Will i start a new library on my macbook pro? How will that mesh with the home server when I come back.
#5 Is there a way to mirror files or folders? So something that I have on my macbook pro will also mirror on the home server.
Thanks for your help on this. I'll post any follow up questions.

    1. I want to replace the Optical drive with a 2TB SATA. can I use this 2.5 inch?
I do not know if it is the same model number, but this one will work in your MBP:

    2. I want to replace the HD with a 128GB SSD 840. When I replace these drives, will my OS still be in tact? I have never done this job before.
No. You will have to format the drives in Disk Utility>Erase to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and then install the OSX by using the original install disks.
3.) I want to replace the ram sticks to max capacity. This is 2 2GB sticks, Correct?
No.  An early 17" 2008 MBP will accept 6GB RAM with the following specifications:  200-pin PC2-5300 (667MHz) DDR2 SO-DIMM.  The best sources of Mac compatible RAM are OWC and Crucial.
    4.) Most difficult...
I want to extend the monitor wirelessly to a projector. I thought about using Apple TV and Airplay. However, support for airplay is for MacBooks 2011 and newer. I thought of using a PS3 and the media server, but I think this brings on a format compatibility issue. (my library is so large I could not afford to convert all my movies to MP4.) So, how would you recommend I put my extended monitor with VLC player onto a projector?
Could I possibly connect the MBP to a Mac Mini as an extension? would this work natively? I would rather use a VGA cord than F with 3rd party app BS.
    Cannot help you there.
5..) I want to Bypass iTunes this time around. I would prefer to use Finder and VLC to manage all of my music. I mostly play all my music on shuffle, so, could I create a playlist on VLC with all of my music and play it randomly? (im sure this is possible but i'd like to organize all my plans with confirmation.)
You are not obligated to use iTunes.
6.) Can i upgrade the keyboard to backlit? i've read that this is possible.
All MBPs have back lighted keyboards.  Your either needs a NVRAM reset or a repair.
    Ciao.

  • Mac Mini and iPad

I am discovering the iPad on internet, as I have not been able to get hold of one yet. It seems to offer a great interface for keyboard, screen and potentially eliminate the necessity of a mouse.
The question I have is: is it possible to use the iPad as the screen, keyboard and mouse of a Mac Mini, allowing different people in the house to use a computer but without the "bulkiness" of a Mac book etc?
Thank you for your help on this

When it's available, the iPad will probably be able to do VNC just like the iPhone can do, which will essentially allow you to do just what you're asking about. It might be a bit slower than sitting in front of the Mini, and only one person at a time will be able to control the screen. Read more about VNC by doing a Google search.
