IPad mini mysteriously disabled - no one touched it.

The other day I left school and drove home.  I had been using my iPad mini before class, and put it in my purse.  It stayed in my purse the entire classtime.  When I got home and opened my iPad, it was disabled.  Permanently.  I had to restore from iTunes, and lost everything stored in my iPad since my last backup.  I am wondering what could have caused this?  Could a magnet in my purse cause this?  I have a flashlight in my purse which has a magnet on the clip.  To prevent this from happening again, I removed the password protection, but of course I would prefer to leave it password protected. I don't have any pens, pencils, styluses, or paperclips wandering around in my purse.  I did have a small section of newspaper folded inside my iPad cover, which may have kept the cover from closing properly.  Any ideas?

I am wondering how motion of my purse could have also entered random numbers on the touchscreen.  The only thing that might have "touched" the touchscreen is the newspaper, which as far as I know, does not have any electrical impulse in order to be "felt" by the touchscreen.  Any thoughts on this?  THANK YOU!

Does the screen respond properly to your typing?  If it handles other typing correctly, leave the passcode off and see if it wakes and works properly.
If it has problems with recognition of typing, take it to an Apple store genius bar and have the techs check it out.

    Hi yonamadonna,
    Welcome to the Support Communities!
To address this issue, I would suggest you close all open apps, then restart and reset your iPad.  Here's how:
iOS: Force an app to close

iPhone, iPad, iPod touch: Turning off and on (restarting) and resetting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430
Reset iPad settings - iPad User Guide
    http://help.apple.com/ipad/7/#/iPad9a74dc01
Reset iPad settings. Go to Settings > General > Reset, then choose an option:
Reset All Settings:  All your preferences and settings are reset.
Also, check the restrictions settings on your iPad mini to make sure these apps have not been turned off:

  • Is the ipad mini basically a larger ipod touch?

Is the ipad mini basically a larger ipod touch? I've got an iPod touch and I'm wondering if an ipad mini will do anything they iPod touch can't?

Well, not quite. The iPod Touch has a retina display, for example, and the iPad mini does not. There probably are some differences in speed of processor, but you can probably look that up for yourself.
Otherwise, there are specific Apps for the iPad and for the iPhone/iPod, though many are universal and work on both. Some games, for example work on one or another, and some game developers make you purchase separate versions.
Technically, they're close, but it's all about portability I suppose. I think that Apple has an idea that there is a range of portable devices, with some overlap, between the iPod nano up through a MacBook Pro. Each step gives you trade offs in price, usability, upgradeability, etc.

I have just purchased a lightning to 30 pin adaptor to use on an iPad mini and a gen5 iPod touch both devices are running iOS 8.1.3 and come up with The error message "this accessory is not supported by this device "
THis is means they are not charging on a 30 pin cable and the touch won't work in my Apple iPod dock - no audio out or charge. Have re powered both devices to no avail am wondering if the iOS version is the problem
    Help!

If it is a lightning to 30 pin adaptor, and you have a 7th Generation Nano it has to fit the Nano.
This is lightning to 30 pin adapter: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Apple%26%23174%3B---Lightning-to-30-Pin-Adapter/6651 936.p?id=1218803450821&skuId=6651936#tab=overview
    Is this what you bought?
You need to contact Sony and see if they model you have is compatible with the docking adapter. It may not be.

I plugged in my wife's iPad.  Both ipads have the same apple id and password. iTunes synced everything from my iPad to my wife's iPad. Now we have two identical iPads looking like mine. Everything on her ipad seems gone and replaced with mine, all her recent holiday photos, emails, settings, etc etc seem gone.
    I'm toast!
