IPad not charging from USB

New iPad owner here. I was wondering if it's normal for the iPad to only charge from the wall charger and not via USB. It syncs up fine but I get the "Not Charging" message as long as its connected to my computer via USB.

I think it is weird that it doesn't charge to any USB-port except the ones on my MacBook Pro. I have USB hubs in my Apple monitor that normally have enough power to supply anything that needs power. I have a standalone powered USB-hub that gives a lot of power. But none of them will charge my iPad.
Other equipment will give you a message that it need more power than the connection has, why doesn't that happen when you connect the iPad to a USB-port that it will not charge from.
My two ports on the MacBook Pro are occupied and it is not an option to connect the iPad there and it is annoying to connect the USB charger and then later connect it to the computers USB-feed.
Not good!

  • IPad not charging through USB

Just got an iPad. When using USB cord to connect to computer, iPad charging indicator says "not charging". iTunes synchs fine. When I use wall outlet to charge all OK. Any ideas why not charging through ANY USB port on my laptop? Thank you,
    Chris

Leave it plugged in after you complete the sync, let it go to sleep (lock) and the charging rate will increase and you'll get a charging indication.
The charger provided with your iPad can put out up to 2A of charging current. The best you're going to see from a USB port is somewhere around 500mA, that only from high-power ports and can be less depending on the computer. Seeing the "Not Charging" while syncing is perfectly normal.

  • Uk iPad not charging from computer

    Hi all,
I tried to charge my iPad from my brand new Mac mini (latest one) and whilst the battery icon on the iPad says its charging it in fact does not. If iPad is as 80% charge then it will just stay at 80% never going any higher.
The supplied charger works well and quite quickly, so I am guessing that the Max mini does not supply enough current to the device - can anyone offer any advice ?

The iPad has to be off in order for it to charge through USB. When I connect my iPad to my laptop the charge level stays the same unless I turn it off. I don't remember if the same thing happens when using the wall charger.

  • My iPod Shuffle is not charging from USB

    Hi,
My iPod Shuffle is perfectly operationnal when connected to my laptop thru a USB port.  I can see it with iTunes et it syncs perfectly.  The only problem, it does not charge.  I see the yellow light flashing for a few seconds, while it syncs and then nothing.
I run Windows 8.1 on an ASUS laptop.  I have disabled the USB suspension.  Driver is not authorized to turn off the port to save energy.
When I connect my iPod Shuffle to a desktop computer (running Windows Vista), everything is fine.
    Any clue?
    Thx

I don't know where "fix" this will be (Microsoft, Asus, or Apple), but this may be what's going on...
When an iPod is NOT set to Enable disk use (or Manually manage music), iTunes only mounts the iPod's disk when syncing.  The rest of the time, the iPod's disk is not mounted.  There may be a "feature" on your laptop, and/or in Windows 8, that attempts to save energy by putting the USB port into a low-power mode, when the connected storage device (the iPod in this case) is not mounted.  When iTunes unmounts the iPod's disk after syncing, it may look like an external storage device that no longer needs full power, even though an iPod needs full power to charge its battery.
When an iPod IS set to Enable disk use (or Manually manage music), iTunes keeps the iPod's disk mounted continuously.  Therefore, the USB port stays at full-power mode and the iPod's battery is able to charge.
    I know you said
I have disabled the USB suspension.  Driver is not authorized to turn off the port to save energy.
but maybe that setting is not working properly (as it relates to iTunes/iPod), and that's the cause.
A desktop computer does not run on battery power, so it may not have this feature; saving energy is not a high priority when the power source is the wall outlet, not a battery.  Or, Windows Vista may not have this feature.  Therefore, the USB port gets full power whether the connected storage device is mounted or not.
One additional test you can try is to see if it makes a difference if the laptop's power adapter is connected or disconnected.  When the power adapter is connected, the laptop has "unlimited" access to energy from the wall outlet (like the desktop), so maybe the USB ports stay at full power all the time.

  • IPhone 3GS will not charge from USB or charger

My iPhone 3GS will not charge at all - have tried different cables, USBs, wall chargers and still no success

Take it to the Apple store let the "Genius" run some diagnostics on it.

  • Not charging from USB

Since a few weeks ago, my iPhone 4 wont charge from the USB cable plugged into various computers. I bought another plug and tried with the USB cable in the same PC's. This worked for 4 days and now doesn't work again.
    Any idea's ?

You may of damaged one of your pins in your docking port. Each pin does something different so some things may work (like computer sees phone and you can sync) but pin(s) for charging are damaged (or dirty).
Try cleaning your docking port of any debris or lint.

  • My ipod will not charge from a wall socket but will charge using the same cable if the usb end is plugged into a computer or an airport power source. My iphone and ipad charge fine on the same cable usin ghte same wall plug in the same wall socket?

My ipod will not charge from a wall socket but will charge using the same cable if the usb end is plugged into a computer or directly into an airport power source. My iphone and ipad charge fine on the same cable using the same wall plug in the same wall socket. This makes no sense but I see that it has been posted as a problem elsewhere. This must be due to some kind of degredation of the Ipod. . It is not fixed by IOS resets as others have noted.
Has anyone asked Apple directly about this?

    Hi there Apples or Pears,
I would recommend taking a look at the troubleshooting steps found in the articles below.

  • My iPad will not charge from the wall outlet or the USB.  I also used three different chargers, as well as rebooting my iPad several times.

My iPad will not charge from the wall outlet or the USB.  I also used three different chargers, as well as rebooting my iPad several times.

Then it's time to make an appointment at your Apple Genius Bar at your Apple Store.  Apple will check it out and if it's defective and still in waranty (you don't say which model you have), it will be replaced.

  • New iPad 3 will not charge from a mac. need help on that

my new ipad 3 will not charge from a mac. need help why if any one knows? thk

The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.
At this link http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/galaxy-tab-android-tablet,3014-11.html , tests show that the iPad 2 battery (25 watt-hours) will charge to 90% in 3 hours 1 minute. It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. If you are using your iPad while charging, it will take even longer. It's best to turn your new iPad OFF and charge over night. • Ipad 2 won't charge from ipad charger, but will sync and charge from USB!

    Hi
I have been having some issues with charging my Ipad 2 and have searched the internet but can't find a solution.
I can charge and sync my ipad from my computer but it will not charge from the mains charger (2 amp) provided with the ipad. - Therefore there is no problem with either the lead or the pins on the ipad
I know the cable works as it is the one i am using to sync to the PC. The charger also works to charge my iphone. - Therefore no issues with the charger.
    I have rebooted the ipad.
I have also restored the ipad back to its orignal settings and restored a back up from Itunes.
All so far have had no effect on using the charger to charge the ipad.
Perhaps a trip to the Istore is the only option?
    thanks

Take your iPad, cable & charger to the Apple Store.

  • My iPad is not charging from my laptop

Hi after I update my iPad to 6.1 it's not charging from my laptop

iPads want 10W of power, most USB ports put out 5W. Technically, your iPad will charge off USB, but since hte power is below its minimum requirement, it says 'not charging', and it will take a long time. SUch as leaving your iPad connected to your computer over night and getting up in the morning and it's still not charged.
Using the power brick plugged into the wall is the most reliable and efficient way of charging it.

  • "iPad not charging Connect to a power adapter or a USB port on this mac to charge" Maverick issue!

Ever since we updated to mavericks our deployment of 60 iPad's flashes "iPad not charging Connect to a power adapter or a USB port on this mac to charge" on the screen every time one is plugged in. It is a false alarm because the iPad does in fact trickle charge and it does update the device like it is supposed to. At this point it's more of an annoyance then an actual problem. However I would like it to stop popping up every time one is plugged in.
Does anybody have any ideas to stop it?

Your computer USB port typically provides only 2.5W of power. iPads require 10-12W of charging power. That's why you get the "Not Charging" message. However, the iPad is charging, but much slower. There's no way to stop it.
