IPad not charging through USB

Just got an iPad. When using USB cord to connect to computer, iPad charging indicator says "not charging". iTunes synchs fine. When I use wall outlet to charge all OK. Any ideas why not charging through ANY USB port on my laptop? Thank you,
Chris

Leave it plugged in after you complete the sync, let it go to sleep (lock) and the charging rate will increase and you'll get a charging indication.
The charger provided with your iPad can put out up to 2A of charging current. The best you're going to see from a USB port is somewhere around 500mA, that only from high-power ports and can be less depending on the computer. Seeing the "Not Charging" while syncing is perfectly normal.

  • Help! iPad 'Not Charging' through AC charger

I have two iPad's, one first generation and one second generation. I also have an iLuv charger/dock which works fine. But when I try to charge them through an AC charger it says 'Not Charging'. I know they're old but help needed please!!

    Hello geraldineoshea,
It sounds like you are getting the message "Not Charging" when using one specific charger.  It sounds like the issue is not with your iPad since it is happening with two different iPads.  I found an article that discusses this message:
Note:Some USB 2.0 ports and accessories do not provide enough power to charge iPad. When this occurs the message "Not Charging" appears in the status bar next to the battery icon.
The article also provides a table to show what adapter is compatible with your device.  For the iPad models you have, you will need a 10W or 12W adapter.  You can find the full article here:
    iPad: Charging the battery

If you are still having the problem after verifying you are using the correct adapter, there may be an issue with that specific adapter you are using.   Thank you for posting in the Apple Support Communities!

  • My Shuffle 2g will not charge through USB on laptop or through wall adapter

    Hi,
I cannot get iTunes or my pc to recognize my iPod, so it obviously won't charge. I tried charging through a wall outlet and that's not working either. I've tried turning it off for 5 seconds and then turning on just as i was directed in troubleshooting with no luck.
Can someone please help me? This is getting very frustrating and turning me off to Apple products.

Ran into this same issue last night with my daughter's shuffle. It worked fine yesterday afternoon, plugged it into the computer to charge, everything seemed normal (ie. orange to green charging light). Then she complained the iPod wouldn't play. Thought she locked it by accident, or had the volume turned down, but I messed with it and couldn't get it to work either. Tried to plug it back in, but now the PC won't reconize the device at all (not in Win Explorer or iTunes so reset utility won't help). Only thing different about my situation from what else I've read is that when I put the iPod in the dock, or charge from the wall, after 2 secs, the green light blinks once...then nothing. When I remove the iPod and turn it on, the orange light comes on but no sound, etc. I've tried docking to six different USB ports on two different computers and tried two different sync cables...no go.
If anyone has any suggestions other than trash the iPod, my daughter would appreciate the help. Thanks.

  • IPad not charging from USB

New iPad owner here. I was wondering if it's normal for the iPad to only charge from the wall charger and not via USB. It syncs up fine but I get the "Not Charging" message as long as its connected to my computer via USB.

I think it is weird that it doesn't charge to any USB-port except the ones on my MacBook Pro. I have USB hubs in my Apple monitor that normally have enough power to supply anything that needs power. I have a standalone powered USB-hub that gives a lot of power. But none of them will charge my iPad.
Other equipment will give you a message that it need more power than the connection has, why doesn't that happen when you connect the iPad to a USB-port that it will not charge from.
My two ports on the MacBook Pro are occupied and it is not an option to connect the iPad there and it is annoying to connect the USB charger and then later connect it to the computers USB-feed.
    Not good!

  • Can't get my Ipad to charge through the PC or wall adapter, it's stuck on the connect to Itunes screen and will not let me reboot it.

My Ipad has been stuck on the connect to Itunes screen now for days, it will not charge through the PC or wall charger.  When plugged into the PC it is not recognized by it.  Itunes doesn't see it and it will not let me reboot the system.  How can I get past this so I can start using it again?

    Hello Aloe_85,
This screen indicates that your device must be restored before it can be used again. The steps detailed in the article below can help get your iPad to reappear in iTunes so that it may be restored.

  • "iPad not charging Connect to a power adapter or a USB port on this mac to charge" Maverick issue!

Ever since we updated to mavericks our deployment of 60 iPad's flashes "iPad not charging Connect to a power adapter or a USB port on this mac to charge" on the screen every time one is plugged in. It is a false alarm because the iPad does in fact trickle charge and it does update the device like it is supposed to. At this point it's more of an annoyance then an actual problem. However I would like it to stop popping up every time one is plugged in.
Does anybody have any ideas to stop it?

Your computer USB port typically provides only 2.5W of power. iPads require 10-12W of charging power. That's why you get the "Not Charging" message. However, the iPad is charging, but much slower. There's no way to stop it.

  • IPad will not charge by USB only by plug

My iPad charges fine whiles plugged into mains, but will not charge by USB. It's says its charging when flat but once on it has a message next to the battery bar saying not charging?

Correct, as most computers do not provide sufficient current to charge the iPad properly. It may charge, but it will be very, very slow.

  • Has anyone ever experienced the situation where plugging in the USB connector to the charging source (high-power USB port or Apple charger) halfway, then pressing it in firmly, results in the iPad not charging?

Has anyone ever experienced the situation where plugging in the USB connector to the charging source (high-power USB port or Apple charger) halfway, then pressing it in firmly, results in the iPad not charging?

It's highly likely that there is a poor connection in the phone - either a pin in the dock connector or internal wiring harness.  No software fixes or "tricks" would work, but I would recommend restoring in iTunes, first using a backup and if needed restore as a new phone.
Otherwise, opening and repairing the phone takes some tech knowledge that can't be relayed here.  Apple doesn't repair phones other than replacing batteries (not inconceivable that you have a bad battery), but offers "out-of-warranty" replacement (refurb) phones for $149 (US).  3rd party iPhone repair centers may be able to fix it for less.  Google to find them,
    Tried soft and hard resets
FYI, there's no such thing as "soft" or "hard" resets in iPhone terminology.  There is only one phone reset. You'll see those terms thrown around by technically ignorant posters, but they mean different things to different people and are actually archaic, 1980s PC terms that have nothing to do with iPhones.

  • Ipad 2 not charging via USB after IOS 7 update

I have recently update my i Pad 2 to IOS 7.
The update has completed sucessfully with no issues but I have now found that the iPad nolonger charges via USB. When plugging in the 30 pin cable the chargin icon flashes and then switches to not charging. If I plug in the AC charger it all works fine.
The cable that I am using is the original cable, I have read in the forums that there is some issues with IOS 7 and uncertified cables. Is the original Apple 30 pin connector uncertified ?
    Thanks in advance.

Normally, they don't. There are some out there that do have enough power to charge a full sized iPad.
It is very possible that whatever they did to the firmware to make it detect different cables could have affected how it charges. I know prior to 2011 the ipad used to send more power to the port which allowed people to plug in keyboards etc, but a 2011 update changed that, so it's not unprecedented.
Have you tried to give your iPad a reset? Sometimes if that port has issues it 'turnes off' and it takes a reset to turn it back on. Hold down the sleep and home keys until it reboots. Try again and see if that helps.
Other than that, if Apple has decided to change the configuration there's not much users can do but alter their behavior to fit in with what the device allows.

  • Uk iPad not charging from computer

    Hi all,
I tried to charge my iPad from my brand new Mac mini (latest one) and whilst the battery icon on the iPad says its charging it in fact does not. If iPad is as 80% charge then it will just stay at 80% never going any higher.
The supplied charger works well and quite quickly, so I am guessing that the Max mini does not supply enough current to the device - can anyone offer any advice ?

The iPad has to be off in order for it to charge through USB. When I connect my iPad to my laptop the charge level stays the same unless I turn it off. I don't remember if the same thing happens when using the wall charger.

  • IPad not charging any more...?

The last two days i notices my iPad not charging any more. Eventhough when pluging it into the A/C outlet it would show on the small top right icon, that it's charging, but the battery status renmained at 10% or so... now the battery seems totally drained and i can even restart it.
I also tried using my iPhone A/C adaptor as well as directly charging it from my notebook USB... nothing...death...
Any one knows what to do?
    thx guyy.

Turn your iPad all the way off. Then plug it into the A/C outlet with the adaptor that came with your iPad. Since your battery level is so low, it may take a while for it to have enough juice to power on. Your notebook USB and iPhone charger probably don't have enough power to charge the iPad. Don't use them in the future for charging.

  • Charging through USB - load on PSU quest

I have never used anything which charges through USB before, and tbh, would not have bought the zen micro had I known it didnt come with an adaptor (i'm very suspicious of the whole charging through USB thing)
So I guess I want some reassurance. I have a 600w PSU, hooked up to a DFI lanParty UltraB, g Ram, 9800PRO gfx card (which has it's own molex connector from the PSU), audigy2, 2 internal HD's, 2 CD/DVD dri'ves and my case is a Lian Li fishtank, with UV spotlights, air pump, blue and UV cold cathodes and I use an air extractor to cool my gfx card.
So - is the Zen in any danger of overloading my PSU and frying my system? Other USB devices I have - Saitek Eclipse KB, Logitech G5 mouse, Wacom Graphire3, Iomega external powered harddisk and Griffin Powermate.
is it a risk or am I being paranoid?

plec: The USB standard allows for a 500mA current (small) to be supplied to any device using a USB port. The Micro or any player that charges via USB will only use that amount to charge as well as sharing with the data connection. You can dedicate all that 500mA to charging the player if you use the latest ..0 or 2.20.05 firmware, then slide the power button to lock the player before connecting to the PC.
Don't panic, it's not going to overload your PC as the current drain is USB standard and small.
