IPad Not Charging w/ 10 watt non-Apple USB charger

Yes, I've read that the iPad requires a 10 watt charger.  I have the original iPad 10W USB charger, and also a high quality 10W USB charger that came with my HP TouchPad. When using the TouchPad charger - which is rated for 5V @ 2A (10W) the iPad says "Not Charging."
Why is that?  The TouchPad charger works perfectly with every other USB-powered device I own: hard drives, cameras, phones, TouchPad, etc. The cable works fine with the Apple OEM iPad charger; but stops working when connected to the non-Apple-OEM 10 watt charger.  Does the OEM charger send a signal  that tells the iPad to charge?  Dell power adapters do this (annoyingly).  Does Apple do it too?  I haven't seen any disclosure of such signals from Apple.
Why does the iPad fail to charge when presented with the proper voltage and current specs?  Does the iPad require only Apple-branded chargers?

Bsanders, I've had the EXACT same experience you describe using as you note a very high quality HP Touchpad 10W, 5V USB charger, whether I use the Apple or a 3rd party cable.  Despite what Nathan says, I have also had the same experience ("Not Charging" message) using other 3rd party, same voltage if lower wattage, USB chargers that Nathan suggests should work.  Only my Apple charger will work and give a prompt charge and there is no specification reason the 10W HP USB charger shouldn't.  I am not cutting a cost corner here, rather, I prefer the HP charger design as superior (smaller, same power, smaller interchangeable/twist-on international supply prongs, packs better, black color).  I strongly suspect there IS some type of proprietary signal or cabling involved to push users to Apple chargers only.  I would ask Nathan to dig a bit deeper for an explanation or workaround.   Thanks

  • Using non-Apple power charger

Hi- my ipod touch arrived this morning and I'm wondering if I can use the same non-Apple power charger to charge it away from my Mac when I'm not at home, as I do for my 2 gen. ipod Nano.
    It's an Artwizz mode
    INPUT: 100-240Vac
    0.15A
    50-60Hz
    OUPUT: 5.0Vdc
    1.0A
Awaiting your replies with interest !
    Thanks. SeaDream

Unfortunatly (see previous threads on this topic), Apple has done something to the multi connector so that some aftermarket chargers no longer work with the newer units. Only way to know is to try. Either it will charge or it won't.

  • Do you need a converter to charge Ipod nano (5th gen) using a non-Apple wall charger/plug adapter in Switzerland?

do you need a converter to charge Ipod Nano (5th gen) using a non-Apple wall charger/adapter plug in Switzerland? or is the Ipod Nano dual-voltage?

None of the iDevices are multi-voltage themselves...the chargers from Apple are all 110-240 volt.  You will have to look at the non-Apple charger you have and see if it says it handles 110-240 volts.  Most made today are capable of that range, or they would have to make a different item for each country.
All you probably need is a plug-pin converter, can find those in the airport, at least in Zurich, don't know about Geneva.

  • Can the Apple USB charger be used to charge other non-Apple USB devices?

Can the Apple USB charger be used to charge other non-Apple USB devices?  I just purchased an electric toothbrush that uses a USB port to charge.  If I'm traveling, I would like to consolidate and take only one charger.  Would it be ok to use the apple charger for both items?

Yes, as long as your toothbrush doesn't require more than 5W power draw.

  • Using an non apple wall charger to charge my ipad

...or whatever its called.  I had one of those nifty white boxes for each my Iphone and my Ipad2  I can find neither, and my computer "won't charge my ipad"  ie after my friend helped me research here I discovered it will but at a snails pace.
I currently did find a DLO DLA96464 usb unit.
The specs on the back are as follows:
    Input- 100-240V~0.2A(max)
    Frequency 50-60 Hz
    Output 1a===== 1A 5W
Will this be safe to charge my Ipad2 with.  I am not OVERLY worried about how FAST it will charge, but I don't want to over charge or burn out the power unit on my Ipad2  I don't want to use this device if it is going to f-up my ipad rather than charge it lol
If anyone can help me that would be great.  If not I guess I'll go out and buy one from the geek squad at best buy but I'd like to save the 30 bucks or whatever it is going to cost if I can....safely.
    Thanks!

    In order you posted
    The input voltage (100-240V)
The input voltage frequency (50-60 Hz)
The Output power in amps (1a) and watts (5w)
The output voltage (which is what you need to know to assess whether the unit is 'safe' to connect to your device) is not included
Buy from Apple if you are unsure of the difference between voltage and power

  • Wireless keyboard (non apple) + usb receiver = wake from sleep?

Does a non apple wireless keyboard with its own usb receiver wake the computer from sleep? if so any other issues / concerns when using one?

With regard to the USB port, I have always had my keyboard plugged directly into an original USB1.1 port. I save the USB2.0 ports (PCI Card) for scanner, hard disks, etc that would actually benefit from the speed increase. I do know that the buttons on my scanner (for instant scan/copy etc) work perfectly if the computer is awake, but will not wake the computer from sleep.
With regard to programming the other keys, my microsoft keyboard has a preference pane that allows you to define different functions for all the keys. This came on a cd with the keyboard, but only windows version. Had to download the mac version from microsoft.com website.
I've never tried a bluetooth keyboard. Perhaps with next computer purchase.
When I was shopping for a keyboard - the one thing that pushed me to the microsoft keyboard was greater flexibility in defining functions for the keys. For instance, The play, fast forward, rewind, volume keys always access itunes regardless of what program is running, except for imovie, where they instead control playback. If I hold down the shift key and push them in imovie, then they again control itunes. Similarly, I set the "my favorites" keys to link to certain websites in safari, certain albums in iphoto, certain playlists in itunes, and certain folders in the finder or otherwise. This control was more robust at the time (5 years ago) and still functions well for me. Not sure if other manufacturers have this now or not.

I've had no problems since doing this. It's not really modem problem but rather a software problem.

  • IPAD NOT STARTING. IT GOES FROM APPLE LOGO TO SEARCH WHEEL AND THEN BACK TO APPLE LOGO AND DOESN'T STOP.

I'VE HAD MY IPAD A LITTLE OVER A YEAR. IT NOW WONT START UP AND IM PAST MY WARRANTY. IT GOES BACK AND FORTH BETWEEN THE APPLE LOGO AND THE WAIT/SEARCH WHEEL. IT  WONT DO ANYTHING ELSE. I CHARGE IT, BUT BECAUSE IT'S TRYING TO DO SOMETHING, IT BURNS OUT THE BATTERY LIFE. WHAT COULD THIS BE? I HAVE TRIED TO RESET TO FACTORY SETTINGS, WITH NO SUCCESS. THIS IS THE THIRD APPLE PRODUCT MY FAMILY HAS PURCHASED, THAT BREAKS OR MALFUNCTIONS RIGHT AFTER THE YEAR WARRANTY. I WILL NEVER BUY AN APPLE PRODUCT AGAIN WITHOUT ADDED WARRANTIES, IF AT ALL. ALL THOUGH THE TECHNOLOGY IS GREAT, LET'S JUST SAY THAT I HAVE MY DOUBTS WHEN IT COMES TO THE QUALITY OF THE PRODUCTS, THE COST OF SERVICE AND THE LENGTH OF THE WARRANTIES.

Hopefully the USB port on your computer will keep the iPad charged until the restore completes. If your computer is relatively new, you should have enough power coming through the USB port to at least keep the power coming in as it is draining. What I mean is it might not be charging, but hopefully it is not draining either. Just keeping the iPad at the status quo with regard to battery power.
You should not be charged if you simply want to make an appointment to bring your iPad into an Apple Store. Was there an option to get past all of that support nonsense and just speak to a human being? Did you try my favorite trick and just dial 0?

  • Can't get mail on my iPad since I got a new non Apple phone

I Got  a new phone ad its not an iPhone. Now my iPad wont recieve any mail

That shouldn't be an issue because you got a new phone.
Go onto the mail settings in the iPad and make sure it is set up correctly. If that issue still persists let me know and I'll look into it.

I found this "recipe" in a another forum and it worked!
    a) Disconnect all your devices from icloud (ipod, iphone, mac, etc.)
    b) Reset and CHANGE your Apple ID password
    c) Reconnect all devices
    and Voila!
    Voila what?
Unless you put the new password in all devices they won't reconnect.

  • Can I charge my satnav with the apple mains charger

I have just bought a TomTom Start 25 and wondered whether I can use my iPad3 mains adapter to charge the satnav using the satnav's supplied USB lead.

Unless Tom Tom make a non compliant device it will be 5V at 2A (10 watts). If it is 12.5V at 2A (25 watts) the device is incompatible with the USB specifiction, but checking won't hurt.
    so I checked ....
There are 2 TomTom chargers, both 5V, both connect via USB but 1 is 2A and the other is 1A, so, to the OP (hope you are still reading) you can use either but the smaller (1A) will take a significantly longer time to charge the iPad than the larger (2A)
Oh, re-read it, the iPad charger will charge the TomTom as well

  • Non Apple USB Keyboard Issue

    Hi All,
I recently purchased an L3 Systems WristPC keyboard to use with my mac mini.
The problem I'm having is that the NumLock key won't toggle and, as the keyboard shares the number keys with the qwerty row, I cannot type any numbers.
I've confirmed the keyboard works by plugging it into a pc where it functions as expected.
I've been all up and down the net and every forum I could find, but have had no luck with a solution.
    Anyone?
    Thanks in advance..

    Hi Sound Speed-
Greetings and welcome to the Apple boards
Is this a USB keyboard or an adapted PC model?
If it isn't USB per se it most likely won't play nice with any Mac. Does it worked on a PC with the USB adapter?
    Luck-
