IPad: Open AES-encrypted zip files?

Is there an app which allows one to open zip files that were encrypted with AES-128 or AES-256?  There was a discussion last year (https://discussions.apple.com/message/12429143) saying that there were none at the time, but I'm hoping for some progress since then.  GoodReader, Filer LIte, and USB Disk Pro all failed to read files encrypted with either algorithm.  Thanks,
John

I suggest that you run software update, after which you should have Safari 6.0.5 - then check Safari - Preferences - Privacy & see that 'Block cookies' is not set to Always.
Failing that - switch Safari extensions Off via Safari - Preferences - Extensions & test again

  • Sending a 3DES encrypted zip file as one fields in the SOAP request xml.

    Dear All,
    We have a requirement to
    - to create a text file, after mapping and content converisons, out of an IDoc xml file,
    - zip this file
    - encrypt this file using 3DES
    - send this encrypted file as one of the tags of an xml request file to a webservice
Could one of you please help me with any pointers to how we can do this, mainly on how to send the encrypted zip file as one of the tags of an xml file?
Please write back to me if you need more details/clarity on my query.
    Kind Regards,
    Thomas.

    Hi Udo,
    Thank you for the response.
Please let me try this option and get back to you with my findings.

  • Can't open dmg or zip files

I have Yosemite, and recently installed the latest system update for this.
I've noticed today that I can't open dmg or zip files - attempting to do this via the 'open with' command results in the icon for (eg disk utility) appearing in the dock and hanging.
I can mount via Disk Utility - though I'm having issues opening the resulting mounted applications as these then also appear in the dock and hang. Haven't found a way to open zip files yet.
I have tried repairing permissions and disk - with no effect. Restarting the finder also has no effect.
Anybody have any ideas what could cause this (these seem like basic functions) or any troubleshooting steps?
    Many thanks!

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • Can't Open (Decompress) any ZIP files all of a sudden!

    Hi
I've never had problems opening Zip files until a couple of days ago.
All of a sudden I can't open Zip files from 2 different sources.
I've tried downloading them in Safari and Firefox.
I've tried the built in expander and I've tried Stuffit (latest version) and The Unarchiver.
I keep getting error messages, usually saying the data is corrupted or that it was compressed with an unknown method.
I got the original file re-sent to me several times (a purchase from a consumer website) with constantly the same result.
Then today I received a different Zip file from a completely different source with the same result.
My computer is up to date with all the latest Apple software updates.
    I've tried repairing disc permissions.
Anyone know of this issue or have any ideas how to fix it?
    Thanks.

    To The Apple Discussion Boards!
    "I've tried repairing disc permissions."
Did you restart your computer afterwards? If so, download a "zip" file. In the window that pops up, make sure *"Open With"* is selected. Make sure Stuffit Expander is selected or another utility that you want to open all your "zip" files.
Option: Select +"Do this automatically for files like this from now on."+
    Click the "OK" button.

  • I was sent an email which I thought was legit . I opened an attachment (zip file) but nothing in it. I phoned the bank to double check, and of course the email was bogus. How can I tell whether my macbook air version X.9.4 has a virus or not.

I was sent an email which I thought was legit . I opened an attachment (zip file) but nothing in it. I phoned the bank to double check, and of course the email was bogus. How can I tell whether my macbook air version now has a virus?

No Mac viruses are propagated through email.
Be vigilant for suspicious activity as you normally should be, but do not download or install some "anti-virus" utility in an effort to fix a problem that does not exist. That's a well-worn path to certain misery.

  • Can I open an encrypted pdf file from Dropbox with my iPhone, iPad, or iPad Mini?

Mac OS 10.9.3 encrypts a pdf file using Acrobat XI, then sends it to Dropbox.  Mobile device retrieves encrypted file from Dropbox.  Then can mobile device user open (unencrypt) the pdf file?

George, you wrote something that encouraged me to try to encrypt a PDF document again using the security icon on the menu bar of my old Acrobat 8 Professional. It worked this time (it wouldn't encrypt on my first try, and I wrongly assumed that it wasn't compatible with Maverick OS).  I dropped document into Dropbox, retrieved it with mobile devices; and when I tapped on the document, it simply asked for the password and opened perfectly. When moving to a different screen, then back to the secured PDF file, one must re-enter the password again (which is good).
As far as what PDF viewer -- I don't know.  I have the Acrobat Reader APP on my devices, is that the reader the document is using??  I've never figured out which APPs are running at any particular time on these devices.
Many, many thanks for your reply!!

  • Need To Open An Encrypted PDF File That I Created.  No Password.

I have Acrobat 8.  I created a document and then tried to put security on it.  Now I cannot even open the document.  It gives me the message:  "You do not have access rights to the encrypted document."  I never entered a password or anything.  I need to get this document reopened.  Also, I pasted some JPEG signatures into the document.  My reason for security measures was to make sure nobody could edit the document and right click and save as the signature JPEG.  First thing first- getting the document opened.  Then let me know how to just make it so that someone can only read and print the document and not be able to edit any typewriter insertions.  PLEASE HELP!!!!

    Hi Dom,
Let's start with Certificate Security is not the same as Password Security. If you had encrypted the PDF file using Password Security, then whatever password you used to lock the document you would use to unlock the document. It's pretty straight forward, and in the cryptography world it would be know as symmetrical security in that you use the same key (password) to lock and unlock the file. Think of it as using a key to lock your front door to your house when you leave and the exact same key to unlock the door when you return, that's what symmetrical security is.
Certificate security is a totally different beast. Certificate Security uses asymmetrical encryption meaning there are two different keys involved, a public key and its corresponding private key. When these keys are generated there is a voodoo that goes on that gives these two keys a symbiotic relationship in that (and this is the basic tenet of asymmetrical encryption) what one key locks only its corresponding other key can unlock. Either key can lock (really encrypt) something and only its corresponding other key can unlock (decrypt) it once it's been locked. Of these two seemingly magical keys one is designated as a private key that only the key owner has access to, and the other is designated as a public key that the whole world has access to. If you lock something with your private key then only its corresponding public key can unlock it, and yes that means that not even the private key can unlock it. You can also lock something using the public key in which case only the corresponding private key can successfully unlock it.
When you encrypt (think of that as "lock") a PDF file using Certificate Security you are encrypting the file using one or more public keys. That is, you encrypt the file for a list of recipients where each recipient has provided you with their public key and they in turn will decrypt the document using their private key. The number of recipients is theoretically limitless, but practically there is a limit in that each recipient you include will cause the file size to grow a little and at some point you'd make the file size too large for the computer to handle, but for the sake of our discussion think unlimited number of recipients. When you encrypted the file you were asked to select a recipient. If you don't also select yourself as a recipient then you end up locking yourself out of the file, and that's exactly what happened in your case. I see from above that you are using version 8, but I believe it was version 9 where we added the warning to make sure to add yourself as a recipient so as to not lock yourself out of the file (I can't remember if it was version 8 or 9, but since you didn't mention that warning I'll assume that we didn't add the warning until 9).
Unless you added yourself at the time you encrypted the file there is no going back to add yourself later because if you can't open the file you can't edit the file. You are locked out forever. You could ask the person that you included as a recipient to see if they can open the file and remove security, but you would have had to make them a document owner when you encrypted the file. If you restricted their editing capabilities then they won't be able to remove security, but at least you could see the contents of the file.
I know this has all been a bit geeky, and I haven't gone into how to procure a public/private key pair, but I don't want to dump too much data on you in one post. If you need more information let me know and I'll be glad to provide it.

  • How do I open a downloaded Zip file from firefox in android platform

as above . I downloaded a file off the net via a link and its an ebook in ZIP format. The android version of Firefox refuses to allow me to do anything with it

    Hi,
In order to open ZIP files, you have to download an app to enable the opening of the ZIP. Here's one you can use: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.winzip.android
Next, when you install that, open it and go to your Download directory. It should either be in sdcard0, sdcard, or sdcard1, then go to Download.
Once you find it, touch and hold the file, then click '''Unzip here''' and it will extract the files in the ZIP folder.
Let me know if this works!

  • How to prevent automatically opening of downloaded zip-files?

I have a problem to install an extension in Joomla. Joomla asks for a Zip-file. When I download the zip-file from the website, the zip-file is shown in Finder as a folder, i.e. an opened zip-file. Joomla does not see a folder, because it looks for a zip-file. I have a terrible solution, but I am sure others will know a better one. I used my old Windows computer, downloaded the zip-file that in Windows shows the extension .zip. Copy the file to Finder and now it shows in Finder the file as a zip-file. So, I suppose that my OS X (now Yosemite, but it happened already under Maverics) or my Safari changes a zip-file in an opened form. I could not find a way to change this to the state that Safari, Finder or OS X is not automatically opening zip-files.

Choose Preferences from the Safari menu, click on General, and uncheck the box to automatically open safe files.

I have a sudden problem with xls-files that just started to bather me. I have used iWorks and Numbers for 5 years now and this is the first time I have faced problems with xls-files. Let me explain. On my work iMac I try to open a saved xls-file ( that I have received via e-mail and saved on my hard drive ). When opening it, the following text appear: " The file is encrypted and cannot be opened ". This occur with all xls-files - not just one. Have I done something to the preferences or ....

Same problem here, but file author says not encrypted, but does contain locked cells.

  • Opening .RAR  and .ZIP files

Does anyone know of any free programs that open .rar, .zip, etc...?

You don't need anything, you should be able to just double click on the file to open a .rar or .zip. If you want to compress a file(s) or folder, simply right click on it and choose Compress and that will create a .zip file.
