i already own the high end 21.5 iMac. i am going to be a college student in the fall. will an ipad be sufficent enough for my note taking and other school work or do i need to buy a laptop?

iPads are compatible with all Macs.
iPads are fine for note taking, book reading, word processing/editing, etc. Just don't expect it to be just like Word, Powerpoint, and Excel on the computer. It's useful for lots of things, but you have to keep in mind that it isn't an iMac, so there are some things you cannot do or cannot do as completely as on the computer.
What you should do is go to an Apple Store and try one out. That's the best way for you to see what it can do for you.

All purchases (and their updates) are forever tied to the ID used when they were bought. You cannot erase an ID, you simply stop using it. You will have to allow your son an exclusive account if he wants to use your computer. Can you log in under your ID now ... or do you have to use his? If the latter is the case, he has clearly changed your ID to one that is his.

IPad prevents MBP from sleeping

I recently noticed that my MBP was no longer sleeping. It would get to the almost asleep state - where the light was very dim - but not pulsing - and stay there.
I shut down all programs on the MBP and made sure that the Preference for Waking on Ethernet Access was not checked.
It still would not sleep.
I finally solved the problem by asking what the last thing I did was, before I noticed this issue. I bought my iPad.
I also noticed that the router lights for the MBP were active, occasionally flashing. Normally they go out as the MBP goes into the sleep mode.
Solution:
The iPad is apparently networked with the MBP, either directly via the WiFi or via iCloud.
By turning the Airplane mode ON on the iPad, my MBP quickly went to sleep. The Airplane mode turns the WiFi off and thereby disconnects it from my MBP.
So if you have a problem with your Mac not sleeping properly, try turning the Airplane mode ON on your iPad and see if this does not fix the problem. It works for me...

sudo sysctl -w net.inet.tcp.log_in_vain=1
will give you output like the following in the console log:

In my case it was Synology Surveillance station trying to connect to port 554 on my laptop...
Don't forget to set the variable back to 0 after you found the problem!

Calendar app to sync from input to 1st Gen iTouch to iPad/MB/MBP?

I would like to able to input my work schedule onto my ipod touch 1st gen, iOS 3.1.3 and then have it auto sync to my iPad 2, and my wife's and mine MB and MBP (OS 10.6).
I assume Google's calendar might have to be involved which is fine.

Which mac thould i buy? i will be a college student in the fall living at home for the first 2 years then moving on campus. i cant decide between the MBP or iMac + iPad. help?

Hello and Sorry,
My son has had an Ipad for 12 months, he has music and movies on it from all over. He has just got his own MBP and we have set him up as stand alone now.
Problem is all his music and movies are on the iPad and not the MBP, how do we get it all on the MBP?
Once again, sorry for the novice posting, I am sure there is an easy and simple answer, but with being a few days to Christmas my head is mince.

Problem sync'ing emails made on my iPad with MBP

I have emails on my iPad which do not appear on the MacBookPro, so I seem to be having a problems with emails generated by on my ipad not syncing back to my MacBookPro. I have done all thge usual checks but perhaps I have missed something, can anyone help?

How to avoid having to accept the same outlook invitation in iCal on both my iPad and my MBP?

I manage my agenda on both my MBP that I use at work, as my iPad. On both I sync with the outlook agenda that is used at work.
All fine, except for one annoying thing: when work invitations are send from outlook, they rightfully appear as inviations in both iCal for iPad as MBP.
However, when I accept or decline on one of them, the invitation still is there on the other. So, for example I decline on the iPad, the invitation is cleared, the agenda item is removed, and a message is send to the originator. Fine. BUT, on my MBP, the invitation and temp agenda item remains in iCal. So, in order to remove I have to decline again, hence send that message again to the originator. Not what I want!
Anybody knowing a solution?

works ok on mine - (5, 7.1.1). Try again. with previews set to none, mine shows the sender and the subject line only. (you cannot get rid of the subject) with the other settings, you get the sender, subject line and however many lines you selected.

Sent mail not syncing with MBP Mail from iPad

I just setup one of my email accounts with IMAP on my iPad and MBP to see how they will work together. When i reply to an email from the iPad it will show the little reply arrow in Mail on my MBP but will not show the message anywhere. Not in the top of the conversation or in any sent mail folder.
How can I get it to sync the sent mail?
Any help is appreciated!

Transfer photos from iPad to Macbook Pro??

Hi All,
My daughter has an iPad which I want to download some of the images off to my MBP.
- I have tried turning on Airdrop and can't see the iPad.
- I have tried using 'Image Capture' which sees the iPad but none of the images on it.
(See images attached).
What is the easiest way to transfer photos from an iPad to MBP assuming I don't want to Sync the iPad to the MBP? (Just transfer them).
Macbook Pro 15" - 10.9.5 (Mavericks).
iPad - iPad Air 5th gen 64GB

Dell ST2420L x 2 Plus 13" MBP

Hello everyone,
I'm thinking about buying a couple of the Dell ST2420L monitors and hooking them up to my 13" MBP (Mid-2010) to form a nice desk-top system. I'm fairly new to this type of thing and don't know if I'll need more accessories or drivers to make it work. Can anyone offer some advice? Thank you so much for your assistance.

Please don't say "Just by the Thunderbolt Display" or "Just buy an iMac." Believe me, if I could, I'd do that. But at the moment, Dell is offering two of the 24" HD Displays for $515 USD. For now, that's a better "option" for me. Thank you again for your help.

IMO Ipad and MBP. iMac isn't a portable computer and is more like a desktop. If you are looking for portability then MBP is the way to go.

Everytime i try to set up my ipad i loose my wi-fi connection why is this?

I had an issue where my router was dropping the wifi and the iPad was losing the connection. It was the router's fault. Try rebooting your router first. Otherwise, plug your iPad in with a USB cable for the initial setup.
Persoanlly, I've found the wifi syncing to be particularly flaky; good wifi signal on both the iPad and MBP, but no connection between the two in iTunes.
