IPad overheating while asleep, battery dying

I have a gen 3 iPad running 7.0.4. Recently (perhaps after the last update) I'll pick it up to use it and find that it is quite warm and the battery has significantly run down. It has a Belkin smart cover which has worked perfectly up to this point. The screen is off, but something is running hard in the backgound. Any thoughts?

Something is definitely running in the background. Try a hard reset first - hold down the Home and Power buttons together until you see the Apple logo (about 10 seconds). That will reset the iPad but will not erase anything.
If that doesn't work, you'll need to restore the iPad. I would recommend not restoring from a backup since whatever is causing the issue might get restored along with everything else.  Backup your iPad in iCloud or iTunes (whichever you use) and then go to Settings>General>Reset and choose "Reset All Settings". This will erase everything on your iPad and restore it to factory settings.  Then you can set it up again. You could try to restore from your backup, and if that doesn't work, then do a complete rebuild.
Good luck!

  • IPad first gen 3g, battery died, wont start

I have been happily using my iPad first gen since i got it when the iPad 3g launched. Every night i would put it on the charger, but recently i went back vacation and didnt charge it for a week. When i got home my iPad was dead, so i placed it on the charger. It shows the charger connecting, the symbol on the face turns to the lightning bolt with a flashing red empty battery. After sitting like this for four hours, it still refuses to boot up. This is the exact same charger i have used for years, and i have tried pressing the home and lock button to force a restart (after about 6 seconds it just turns off). No idea whats wrong, hoping he isnt dead because i cannot afford a new one =(

Check that your cable is in good working order and that you are using the appropriate charger. The iPad required a 10W charger, not the 5W that comes with an iPhone. Most other third-party chargers not SPECIFICALLY stated to be for iPad will charge, but very slowly.
Also, you should;t let the battery drain completely before charging it. You can do that maybe once per month, but repeatedly doing this is not good for Li-ion batteries. Follow Apple's recommendations for battery care and you should be ok. https://www.apple.com/batteries/ipad.html

The only way to get it back is a hard reset or let the battery die and then plug in the charger.  The brightness is up and the power stays on while screen is black.
This is the second macbook pro i have owned in the past two weeks.  I am ready to return it for good if this is a chronic issue. Please help if you have had this same issue.

    Try a SMC reset:

  • Battery died while installing Mavericks. Installation corrupted. Wont boot or resume install.

    Greetings,
A friend just called in a panic. He updated to Mavericks without plugging his MBP in. The battery died while updating and the computer won't boot into OS. It boots back into the installer but won't continue. Disk utility cant repair it. Any idea of how to help him? (he has no backup)
I may have him ship it to me, if it mounts on desktop I'll clone it, reinstal Mavericks, migrate his data.
What generally gets corrupted when a Mavericks installation is abruptly cut short?
Is there anything else to have him try before he ships it?

If his Mac is capable of it, I'd try Internet Recovery.

  • Can I use my iPad Mini while plugged in thus keeping the battery at 100%?

Can I use my iPad Mini while plugged in thus keeping the battery at 100%?
Or must I use it on battery all the time?

Copied from Texas Mac Man ...
The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.
How to Calibrate Your Mac, iPhone, or iPad Battery
    http://www.macblend.com/how-to-calibrate-your-mac-iphone-or-ipad-battery/
At this link http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/galaxy-tab-android-tablet,3014-11.html , tests show that the iPad 2 battery (25 watt-hours) will charge to 90% in 3 hours 1 minute. It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. If you are using your iPad while charging, it will take even longer. It's best to turn your new iPad OFF and charge over night. • Upgarde to 8.1.3, battery died, Ipad 2 dead now

I upgraded to 8.1.3 either on the 5th or 6th of February. As soon as the upgrade was complete and the tablet restarted battery had drained from 70% to 12%. Plugged it in to charge but battery wouldn't charge. By morning, batter had drained to about 5% and then by evening battery died and wouldn't charge. Now I have a dead Ipad. Tried to get it repaired, said it would cost Rs. 17,500 (~USD 300).
Tried using two different cables, chargers, no change.

    Good day kjogani,
Based on the fact that you are still unable to get your iPad to charge, it appears your iPad needs to be serviced. The following link should help you get started with the process and has links with additional information on topics such as warranty and service pricing, battery replacement, and express replacement service.

  • Help, my ipad wont turn off and the screen is blank with the circle that goes around and around. Should i let the battery die? Was I hacked?

Help! My ipad wont turn off and wont open a screen. Just blank with the circle going round and around. was I hacked? Should I let the battery die? I am lame at this stuff.

Have you tried holding down the power and the home buttons until the slider bar shows up to shut down the iPad?

  • IPad won't turn on after battery died

I recently got a second-hand iPad 2 from a family member.  It was working fine until the battery died, and after charging for a moment, it will start turning on, but when it gets to the home screen, it only shows for a second before immediately turning off again.  I'm using a 1A charger and was wondering if that was the issue, or if there is something wrong with my iPad.

Try using the original charger and cable.

  • Battery Draining while asleep mac book air

I own a 2011 11' macbook air which just got its battery replaced. We brought it to the apple store and changed the battery recently. It has been doing things that it has now been doing things I have never seen before: losing a lot a battery when I close the lid, sometimes when I open my computer sometimes a folder with a question mark will show up or it will show my login sign really dimly and I have to restart my computer. I know the battery is not draining for apps and bluetooth because I turn all my unnecessary apps off before I close it. I use this computer for work so this is really a big problem and any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

    1. Check the cycle count of the battery against the limit for your model. The battery may be due for replacement. If the power adapter is connected almost all the time, the battery may need replacing even though the cycle count is not too high.
    2. Follow these instructions, or these for OS X 10.9 or later.
    3. In the Energy Saver preference pane, uncheck the box marked
Enable Power Nap while on battery power
    4. You can also try resetting the SMC.
    5. Make sure your system is up to date in Software Update.
    6. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service center.

  • Battery died while updating to OS X 10.5.2, Now won't boot!

    Dear all,
Last night I went to update my PowerBook from 10.5.1 to 10.5.2, along with a couple of other updates that Software Update had downloaded. Half way through the installation my battery died, and now with the mains plugged in, the computer won't boot at all. I get the initial white screen with they grey apple logo in the middle and a spinning loading icon.
Is there anything I can do to revert it and get it to boot up?
I have a time machine backup from about a week ago, but have some work I did yesterday I would really rather not lose if at all possible!
    Many thanks in advance,
    Jude

Lesson learned: never update on battery.
If you can boot your computer with your OS disc, and if you have enough free hard drive space, you can perform an Archive and Install. This way you lose nothing but the 90-180 minutes it will take for the OS to install.
If it won't boot off the CD or you lack the drive space for an archive and install find another Mac user and mount your computer's drive on their computer using FW target disk mode.

  • Did my battery die?

I bought a new Macbook Pro 15-in. late 2008 model battery on March 26th, 2012, but a month later I was never able to turn on my Mac again while using that battery.
-The battery is unable to charge and my Mac is unable to run without a battery pack inserted.
-The LED light on the charger keeps a constant green light, but the Mac will not turn on. Also, checking the battery, by pressing the silver button, it states that the battery pack only has a few "juice" in it left. ( 1 light )
I'm now currently using my old Battery, and everything seems to be working just fine.
Throughout the time of having the new battery, I always avoided overcharging it. Only 2 times where I fell asleep and it overcharged. I never continuously charged it, I only charged it when it was less than 10% of battery left. Although I wait to charge it only when it reaches below 10%, my mac becomes inactive for a few days.
That's about all the information I can give from what I know. I'm unable to check the specs of the battery because the mac will not start. I'm really worried about what went wrong because it hasn't even been a month yet, and the battery died on me. If there is any more information you need, I'll try to give you it.

It is likely the new battery is defective from what you say.  Read the information in this article from the Battery University, an independent evaluator of battery technology. There you will see that the optimum charge cycle practice seems to be around 50% discharge and recharge.  Deep discharge has a detrimental affect on battery life..
Look at the battery information for the old battery you are now using, Apple menu, About This Mac, More Info, System Report, Hardware, Power and you will see information about the battery condition, capacity, charge remaining, cycles, and voltage.  The Condition should be Normal or there is a problem.
If you can get the computer to start on the new battery, get the same information.

  • My computer's battery died and my grandson had a million apps open.  I've tried rebooting didn't work.   What can I do?

My Grandson was using my ipad2.   He had almost all my apps open when the battery died.   I cannot turn my ipad on now.   There is only 318mg remaining on the drive and when it gets to the home page it shuts off after 2 seconds.  I've tried the reboot (home and wakeup) to no avail.   Can't access through my desktop because the ipad won't stay on.   Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

Have you tried to leave it on the charger for a while? If the battery is totally dead, then it may need to sit for an hour or more before it has enough power to work with.
let it sit over night and then try to access it and see if you can get it to reboot
